창세기 43

1. 그 땅에 기근이 심하고
  Now the famine was still severe in the land.

2. 그들이 애굽에서 가져온 곡식을 다 먹으매 그 아비가 그들에게 이르되 다시 가서 우리를 위하여 양식을 조금 사라
  So when they had eaten all the grain they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, "Go back and buy us a little more food."

3. 유다가 아비에게 말하여 가로되 그 사람이 엄히 우리에게 경계하여 가로되 너희 아우가 너희와 함께 하지 아니하면 너희가 내 얼굴을 보지 못하리라 하였으니
  But Judah said to him, "The man warned us solemnly, 'You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you.'

4. 아버지께서 우리 아우를 우리와 함께 보내시면 우리가 내려가서 아버지를 위하여 양식을 사려니와
  If you will send our brother along with us, we will go down and buy food for you.

5. 아버지께서 만일 그를 보내지 않으시면 우리는 내려가지 아니하리니 그 사람이 우리에게 말하기를 너희 아우가 너희와 함께 하지 아니하면 너희가 내 얼굴을 보지 못하리라 하였음이니이다
  But if you will not send him, we will not go down, because the man said to us, 'You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you.'"

6. 이스라엘이 가로되 너희가 어찌하여 너희에게 오히려 아우가 있다고 그 사람에게 고하여 나를 해롭게 하였느냐
  Israel asked, "Why did you bring this trouble on me by telling the man you had another brother?"

7. 그들이 가로되 그 사람이 우리와 우리의 친족에 대하여 자세히 힐문하여 이르기를 너희 아버지가 그저 살았느냐 너희에게 아우가 있느냐 하기로 그 말을 조조이 그에게 대답한 것이라 그가 너희 아우를 데리고 내려오라 할 줄을 우리가 어찌 알았으리이까
  They replied, "The man questioned us closely about ourselves and our family. 'Is your father still living?' he asked us. 'Do you have another brother?' We simply answered his questions. How were we to know he would say, 'Bring your brother down here'?"

8. 유다가 아비 이스라엘에게 이르되 저 아이를 나와 함께 보내시면 우리가 곧 가리니 그러면 우리와 아버지와 우리 어린것들이 다 살고 죽지 아니하리이다
  Then Judah said to Israel his father, "Send the boy along with me and we will go at once, so that we and you and our children may live and not die.

9. 내가 그의 몸을 담보하오리니 아버지께서 내 손에 그를 물으소서 내가 만일 그를 아버지께 데려다가 아버지 앞에 두지 아니하면 내가 영원히 죄를 지리이다
  I myself will guarantee his safety; you can hold me personally responsible for him. If I do not bring him back to you and set him here before you, I will bear the blame before you all my life.

10. 우리가 지체하지 아니하였더면 벌써 두번 갔다 왔으리이다
  As it is, if we had not delayed, we could have gone and returned twice."

11. 그들의 아비 이스라엘이 그들에게 이르되 그러할찐대 이렇게 하라 너희는 이 땅의 아름다운 소산을 그릇에 담아가지고 내려가서 그 사람에게 예물을 삼을찌니 곧 유향 조금과 꿀 조금과 향품과 몰약과 비자와 파단행이니라
  Then their father Israel said to them, "If it must be, then do this: Put some of the best products of the land in your bags and take them down to the man as a gift--a little balm and a little honey, some spices and myrrh, some pistachio nuts and almonds.

12. 너희 손에 돈을 배나 가지고 너희 자루 아구에 도로 넣여 온 그 돈을 다시 가지고 가라 혹 차착이 있었을까 두렵도다
  Take double the amount of silver with you, for you must return the silver that was put back into the mouths of your sacks. Perhaps it was a mistake.

13. 네 아우도 데리고 떠나 다시 그 사람에게로 가라
  Take your brother also and go back to the man at once.

14. 전능하신 하나님께서 그 사람 앞에서 너희에게 은혜를 베푸사 그 사람으로 너희 다른 형제와 베냐민을 돌려 보내게 하시기를 원하노라 내가 자식을 잃게 되면 잃으리로다
  And may God Almighty grant you mercy before the man so that he will let your other brother and Benjamin come back with you. As for me, if I am bereaved, I am bereaved."

15. 그 사람들이 그 예물을 취하고 갑절 돈을 자기들의 손에 가지고 베냐민을 데리고 애굽에 내려가서 요셉의 앞에 서니라
  So the men took the gifts and double the amount of silver, and Benjamin also. They hurried down to Egypt and presented themselves to Joseph.

16. 요셉이 베냐민이 그들과 함께 있음을 보고 그 청지기에게 이르되 이 사람들을 집으로 인도해 들이고 짐승을 잡고 준비하라 이 사람들이 오정에 나와 함께 먹을 것이니라
  When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, "Take these men to my house, slaughter an animal and prepare dinner; they are to eat with me at noon."

17. 그 사람이 요셉의 명대로 하여 그 사람들을 요셉의 집으로 인도하니
  The man did as Joseph told him and took the men to Joseph's house.

18. 그 사람들이 요셉의 집으로 인도되매 두려워하여 이르되 전일 우리 자루에 넣여 있던 돈의 일로 우리가 끌려드도다 이는 우리를 억류하고 달려들어 우리를 잡아 노예를 삼고 우리의 나귀를 빼앗으려 함이로다 하고
  Now the men were frightened when they were taken to his house. They thought, "We were brought here because of the silver that was put back into our sacks the first time. He wants to attack us and overpower us and seize us as slaves and take our donkeys."

19. 그들이 요셉의 청지기에게 가까이 나아가 그 집 문 앞에서 그에게 고하여
  So they went up to Joseph's steward and spoke to him at the entrance to the house.

20. 가로되 내 주여 우리가 전일에 내려와서 양식을 사가지고
  "Please, sir," they said, "we came down here the first time to buy food.

21. 객점에 이르러 자루를 풀어본즉 각인의 돈이 본수대로 자루 아구에 있기로 우리가 도로 가져왔고
  But at the place where we stopped for the night we opened our sacks and each of us found his silver--the exact weight--in the mouth of his sack. So we have brought it back with us.

22. 양식 살 다른 돈도 우리가 가지고 내려왔나이다 우리의 돈을 우리 자루에 넣은 자는 누구인지 우리가 알지 못하나이다
  We have also brought additional silver with us to buy food. We don't know who put our silver in our sacks."

23. 그가 이르되 너희는 안심하라 두려워 말라 너희 하나님 너희 아버지의 하나님이 재물을 너희 자루에 넣어 너희에게 주신 것이니라 너희 돈은 내가 이미 받았느니라 하고 시므온을 그들에게로 이끌어내고
  "It's all right," he said. "Don't be afraid. Your God, the God of your father, has given you treasure in your sacks; I received your silver." Then he brought Simeon out to them.

24. 그들을 요셉의 집으로 인도하고 물을 주어 발을 씻게 하며 그 나귀에게 먹이를 주더라
  The steward took the men into Joseph's house, gave them water to wash their feet and provided fodder for their donkeys.

25. 그들이 여기서 먹겠다 함을 들으므로 예물을 정돈하고 요셉이 오정에 오기를 기다리더니
  They prepared their gifts for Joseph's arrival at noon, because they had heard that they were to eat there.

26. 요셉이 집으로 오매 그들이 그 집으로 들어가서 그 예물을 그에게 드리고 땅에 엎드리어 절하니
  When Joseph came home, they presented to him the gifts they had brought into the house, and they bowed down before him to the ground.

27. 요셉이 그들의 안부를 물으며 가로되 너희 아버지 너희가 말하던 그 노인이 안녕하시냐 지금까지 생존하셨느냐
  He asked them how they were, and then he said, "How is your aged father you told me about? Is he still living?"

28. 그들이 대답하되 주의 종 우리 아비가 평안하고 지금까지 생존하였나이다 하고 머리 숙여 절하더라
  They replied, "Your servant our father is still alive and well." And they bowed low to pay him honor.

29. 요셉이 눈을 들어 자기 어머니의 아들 자기 동생 베냐민을 보고 가로되 너희가 내게 말하던 너희 작은 동생이 이냐 그가 또 가로되 소자여 하나님이 네게 은혜 베푸시기를 원하노라
  As he looked about and saw his brother Benjamin, his own mother's son, he asked, "Is this your youngest brother, the one you told me about?" And he said, "God be gracious to you, my son."

30. 요셉이 아우를 인하여 마음이 타는 듯하므로 급히 울 곳을 찾아 안방으로 들어가서 울고
  Deeply moved at the sight of his brother, Joseph hurried out and looked for a place to weep. He went into his private room and wept there.

31. 얼굴을 씻고 나와서 그 정을 억제하고 음식을 차리라 하매
  After he had washed his face, he came out and, controlling himself, said, "Serve the food."

32. 그들이 요셉에게 따로 하고 그 형제들에게 따로 하고 배식하는 애굽 사람에게도 따로 하니 애굽 사람은 히브리 사람과 같이 먹으면 부정을 입음이었더라
  They served him by himself, the brothers by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves, because Egyptians could not eat with Hebrews, for that is detestable to Egyptians.

33. 그들이 요셉의 앞에 앉되 그 장유의 차서대로 앉히운 바 되니 그들이 서로 이상히 여겼더라
  The men had been seated before him in the order of their ages, from the firstborn to the youngest; and they looked at each other in astonishment.

34. 요셉이 자기 식물로 그들에게 주되 베냐민에게는 다른 사람보다 오 배나 주매 그들이 마시며 요셉과 함께 즐거워하였더라
  When portions were served to them from Joseph's table, Benjamin's portion was five times as much as anyone else's. So they feasted and drank freely with him.

마가복음 13

1. 예수께서 성전에서 나가실 때에 제자 중 하나가 가로되 선생님이여 보소서 이 돌들이 어떠하며 이 건물들이 어떠하니이까
  As he was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, "Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!"

2. 예수께서 이르시되 네가 이 큰 건물들을 보느냐 돌 하나도 돌 위에 남지 않고 다 무너뜨려지리라 하시니라
  "Do you see all these great buildings?" replied Jesus. "Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down."

3. 예수께서 감람 산에서 성전을 마주 대하여 앉으셨을 때에 베드로와 야고보와 요한과 안드레가 종용히 묻자오되
  As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John and Andrew asked him privately,

4. 우리에게 이르소서 어느 때에 이런 일이 있겠사오며 이 모든 일이 이루려 할 때에 무슨 징조가 있사오리이까
  "Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?"

5. 예수께서 이르시되 너희가 사람의 미혹을 받지 않도록 주의하라
  Jesus said to them: "Watch out that no one deceives you.

6. 많은 사람이 내 이름으로 와서 이르되 내가 그로라 하여 많은 사람을 미혹케 하리라
  Many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am he,' and will deceive many.

7. 난리와 난리 소문을 들을 때에 두려워 말라 이런 일이 있어야 하되 끝은 아직 아니니라
  When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.

8. 민족이 민족을, 나라가 나라를 대적하여 일어나겠고 처처에 지진이 있으며 기근이 있으리니 이는 재난의 시작이니라
  Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains.

9. 너희는 스스로 조심하라 사람들이 너희를 공회에 넘겨 주겠고 너희를 회당에서 매질하겠으며 나를 인하여 너희가 관장들과 임금들 앞에 서리니 이는 저희에게 증거되려 함이라
  "You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues. On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them.

10. 또 복음이 먼저 만국에 전파되어야 할 것이니라
  And the gospel must first be preached to all nations.

11. 사람들이 너희를 끌어다가 넘겨 줄 때에 무슨 말을 할까 미리 염려치 말고 무엇이든지 그 시에 너희에게 주시는 그 말을 하라 말하는 이는 너희가 아니요 성령이시니라
  Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.

12. 형제가 형제를, 아비가 자식을 죽는 데 내어 주며 자식들이 부모를 대적하여 죽게 하리라
  "Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death.

13. 또 너희가 내 이름을 인하여 모든 사람에게 미움을 받을 것이나 나중까지 견디는 자는 구원을 얻으리라
  All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.

14. 멸망의 가증한 것이 서지 못할 곳에 선것을 보거든 (읽는 자는 깨달을찐저) 그 때에 유대에있는 자들은 산으로 도망할찌어다
  "When you see 'the abomination that causes desolation' standing where it does not belong--let the reader understand--then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.

15. 지붕 위에 있는 자는 내려가지도 말고 집에 있는 무엇을 가지러 들어가지도 말며
  Let no one on the roof of his house go down or enter the house to take anything out.

16. 밭에 있는 자는 겉옷을 가지러 뒤로 돌이키지 말찌어다
  Let no one in the field go back to get his cloak.

17. 그 날에는 아이 밴 자들과 젖 먹이는 자들에게 화가 있으리로다
  How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers!

18. 이 일이 겨울에 나지 않도록 기도하라
  Pray that this will not take place in winter,

19. 이는 그날들은 환난의 날이 되겠음이라 하나님의 창조하신 창초부터 지금까지 이런 환난이없었고 후에도 없으리라
  because those will be days of distress unequaled from the beginning, when God created the world, until now--and never to be equaled again.

20. 만일 주께서 그 날들을 감하지 아니하셨더면 모든 육체가 구원을 얻지 못할 것이어늘 자기의 택하신 백성을 위하여 그 날들을 감하셨느니라
  If the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened them.

21. 그 때에 사람이 너희에게 말하되 보라 그리스도가 여기 있다 보라 저기 있다 하여도 믿지 말라
  At that time if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or, 'Look, there he is!' do not believe it.

22. 거짓 그리스도들과 거짓 선지자들이 일어나서 이적과 기사를 행하여 할 수만 있으면 택하신 백성을 미혹케 하려 하리라
  For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and miracles to deceive the elect--if that were possible.

23. 너희는 삼가라 내가 모든 일을 너희에게 미리 말하였노라
  So be on your guard; I have told you everything ahead of time.

24. 그 때에 그 환난 후 해가 어두워지며 달이 빛을 내지 아니하며
  "But in those days, following that distress, "'the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light;

25. 별들이 하늘에서 떨어지며 하늘에 있는 권능들이 흔들리리라
  the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.'

26. 그 때에 인자가 구름을 타고 큰 권능과 영광으로 오는 것을 사람들이 보리라
  "At that time men will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory.

27. 또 그 때에 저가 천사들을 보내어 자기 택하신 자들을 땅 끝으로부터 하늘 끝까지 사방에서 모으리라
  And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens.

28. 무화과나무의 비유를 배우라 그 가지가 연하여지고 잎사귀를 내면 여름이 가까운 줄을 아나니
  "Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near.

29. 이와 같이 너희가 이런 일이 나는 것을 보거든 인자가 가까이 곧 문 앞에 이른 줄을 알라
  Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it is near, right at the door.

30. 내가 진실로 너희에게 말하노니 이 세대가 지나가기 전에 이 일이 다 이루리라
  I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.

31. 천지는 없어지겠으나 내 말은 없어지지 아니하리라
  Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

32. 그러나 그 날과 그 때는 아무도 모르나니 하늘에 있는 천사들도, 아들도 모르고 아버지만 아시느니라
  "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.

33. 주의하라 깨어 있으라 그 때가 언제인지 알지 못함이니라
  Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come.

34. 가령 사람이 집을 떠나 타국으로 갈 때에 그 종들에게 권한을 주어 각각 사무를 맡기며 문지기에게 깨어 있으라 명함과 같으니
  It's like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with his assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch.

35. 그러므로 깨어 있으라 집주인이 언제 올는지 혹 저물 때엘는지, 밤중엘는지, 닭 울 때엘는지, 새벽엘는지 너희가 알지 못함이라
  "Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back--whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn.

36. 그가 홀연히 와서 너희의 자는 것을 보지 않도록 하라
  If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping.

37. 깨어 있으라 내가 너희에게 하는 이 말이 모든 사람에게 하는 말이니라 하시니라
  What I say to you, I say to everyone: 'Watch!'"

■ 혼자 읽기

욥기 9

1. 욥이 대답하여 가로되
  Then Job replied:

2. 내가 진실로 그 일이 그런 줄을 알거니와 인생이 어찌 하나님 앞에 의로우랴
  "Indeed, I know that this is true. But how can a mortal be righteous before God?

3. 사람이 하나님과 쟁변하려 할찌라도 천 마디에 한 마디도 대답하지 못하리라
  Though one wished to dispute with him, he could not answer him one time out of a thousand.

4. 하나님은 마음이 지혜로우시고 힘이 강하시니 스스로 강퍅히 하여 그를 거역하고 형통한 자가 누구이랴
  His wisdom is profound, his power is vast. Who has resisted him and come out unscathed?

5. 그가 진노하심으로 산을 무너뜨리시며 옮기실찌라도 산이 깨닫지 못하며
  He moves mountains without their knowing it and overturns them in his anger.

6. 그가 땅을 움직여 그 자리에서 미신즉 그 기둥이 흔들리며
  He shakes the earth from its place and makes its pillars tremble.

7. 그가 해를 명하여 뜨지 못하게 하시며 별들을 봉하시며
  He speaks to the sun and it does not shine; he seals off the light of the stars.

8. 그가 홀로 하늘을 펴시며 바다 물결을 밟으시며
  He alone stretches out the heavens and treads on the waves of the sea.

9. 북두성과 삼성과 묘성과 남방의 밀실을 만드셨으며
  He is the Maker of the Bear and Orion, the Pleiades and the constellations of the south.

10. 측량할 수 없는 큰 일을, 셀 수 없는 기이한 일을 행하시느니라
  He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be counted.

11. 그가 내 앞으로 지나시나 내가 보지 못하며 그가 내 앞에서 나아가시나 내가 깨닫지 못하느니라
  When he passes me, I cannot see him; when he goes by, I cannot perceive him.

12. 하나님이 빼앗으시면 누가 막을 수 있으며 무엇을 하시나이까 누가 물을 수 있으랴
  If he snatches away, who can stop him? Who can say to him, 'What are you doing?'

13. 하나님이 진노를 돌이키지 아니하시나니 라합을 돕는 자들이 그 아래 굴복하겠거든
  God does not restrain his anger; even the cohorts of Rahab cowered at his feet.

14. 하물며 내가 감히 대답하겠으며 무슨 말을 택하여 더불어 변론하랴
  "How then can I dispute with him? How can I find words to argue with him?

15. 가령 내가 의로울찌라도 감히 대답하지 못하고 나를 심판하실 그 에게 간구하였을 뿐이며
  Though I were innocent, I could not answer him; I could only plead with my Judge for mercy.

16. 가령 내가 그를 부르므로 그가 내게 대답하셨을찌라도 내 음성을 들으셨다고는 내가 믿지 아니하리라
  Even if I summoned him and he responded, I do not believe he would give me a hearing.

17. 그가 폭풍으로 나를 꺾으시고 까닭없이 내 상처를 많게 하시며
  He would crush me with a storm and multiply my wounds for no reason.

18. 나로 숨을 쉬지 못하게 하시며 괴로움으로 내게 채우시는구나
  He would not let me regain my breath but would overwhelm me with misery.

19. 힘으로 말하면 그가 강하시고 심판으로 말하면 누가 그를 호출하겠느냐
  If it is a matter of strength, he is mighty! And if it is a matter of justice, who will summon him?

20. 가령 내가 의로울찌라도 내 입이 나를 정죄하리니 가령 내가 순전할찌라도 나의 패괴함을 증거하리라
  Even if I were innocent, my mouth would condemn me; if I were blameless, it would pronounce me guilty.

21. 나는 순전하다마는 내가 나를 돌아보지 아니하고 내 생명을 천히 여기는구나
  "Although I am blameless, I have no concern for myself; I despise my own life.

22. 일이 다 일반이라 그러므로 나는 말하기를 하나님이 순전한 자나 악한 자나 멸망시키신다 하나니
  It is all the same; that is why I say, 'He destroys both the blameless and the wicked.'

23. 홀연히 재앙이 내려 도륙될 때에 무죄한 자의 고난을 그가 비웃으시리라
  When a scourge brings sudden death, he mocks the despair of the innocent.

24. 세상이 악인의 손에 붙이웠고 재판관의 얼굴도 가리워졌나니 그렇게 되게 한 이가 그가 아니시면 누구이뇨
  When a land falls into the hands of the wicked, he blindfolds its judges. If it is not he, then who is it?

25. 나의 날이 체부보다 빠르니 달려가므로 복을 볼 수 없구나
  "My days are swifter than a runner; they fly away without a glimpse of joy.

26. 그 지나가는 것이 빠른 배 같고 움킬 것에 날아 내리는 독수리와도 같구나
  They skim past like boats of papyrus, like eagles swooping down on their prey.

27. 가령 내가 말하기를 내 원통함을 잊고 얼굴 빛을 고쳐 즐거운 모양을 하자 할찌라도
  If I say, 'I will forget my complaint, I will change my expression, and smile,'

28. 오히려 내 모든 고통을 두려워하오니 주께서 나를 무죄히 여기지 않으실 줄을 아나이다
  I still dread all my sufferings, for I know you will not hold me innocent.

29. 내가 정죄하심을 입을찐대 어찌 헛되이 수고하리이까
  Since I am already found guilty, why should I struggle in vain?

30. 내가 눈 녹은 물로 몸을 씻고 잿물로 손을 깨끗이 할찌라도
  Even if I washed myself with soap and my hands with washing soda,

31. 주께서 나를 개천에 빠지게 하시리니 내 옷이라도 나를 싫어하리이다
  you would plunge me into a slime pit so that even my clothes would detest me.

32. 하나님은 나처럼 사람이 아니신즉 내가 그에게 대답함도 불가하고 대질하여 재판할 수도 없고
  "He is not a man like me that I might answer him, that we might confront each other in court.

33. 양척 사이에 손을 얹을 판결자도 없구나
  If only there were someone to arbitrate between us, to lay his hand upon us both,

34. 주께서 그 막대기를 내게서 떠나게 하시고 그 위엄으로 나를 두렵게 하지 아니하시기를 원하노라
  someone to remove God's rod from me, so that his terror would frighten me no more.

35. 그리하시면 내가 두려움 없이 말하리라 나는 본래 그런 자가 아니니라
  Then I would speak up without fear of him, but as it now stands with me, I cannot.

로마서 13

1. 각 사람은 위에 있는 권세들에게 굴복하라 권세는 하나님께로 나지 않음이 없나니 모든 권세는 다 하나님의 정하신 바라
  Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.

2. 그러므로 권세를 거스리는 자는 하나님의 명을 거스림이니 거스리는 자들은 심판을 자취하리라
  Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.

3. 관원들은 선한 일에 대하여 두려움이 되지 않고 악한 일에 대하여 되나니 네가 권세를 두려워하지 아니하려느냐 선을 행하라 그리하면 그에게 칭찬을 받으리라
  For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you.

4. 그는 하나님의 사자가 되어 네게 선을 이루는 자니라 그러나 네가 악을 행하거든 두려워하라 그가 공연히 칼을 가지지 아니하였으니 곧 하나님의 사자가 되어 악을 행하는 자에게 진노하심을 위하여 보응하는 자니라
  For he is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.

5. 그러므로 굴복하지 아니할 수 없으니 노를 인하여만 할 것이 아니요 또한 양심을 인하여 할 것이라
  Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience.

6. 너희가 공세를 바치는 것도 이를 인함이라 저희가 하나님의 일군이 되어 바로 이 일에 항상 힘쓰느니라
  This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God's servants, who give their full time to governing.

7. 모든 자에게 줄 것을 주되 공세를 받을 자에게 공세를 바치고 국세받을 자에게 국세를 바치고 두려워할 자를 두려워하며 존경할 자를 존경하라
  Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

8. 피차 사랑의 빚 외에는 아무에게든지 아무 빚도 지지 말라 남을 사랑하는 자는 율법을 다 이루었느니라
  Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law.

9. 간음하지 말라, 살인하지 말라, 도적질 하지 말라, 탐내지 말라 한 것과 그 외에 다른 계명이 있을찌라도 네 이웃을 네 자신과 같이 사랑하라 하신 그 말씀 가운데 다 들었느니라
  The commandments, "Do not commit adultery," "Do not murder," "Do not steal," "Do not covet," and whatever other commandment there may be, are summed up in this one rule: "Love your neighbor as yourself."

10. 사랑은 이웃에게 악을 행치 아니하나니 그러므로 사랑은 율법의 완성이니라
  Love does no harm to its neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

11. 또한 너희가 이 시기를 알거니와 자다가 깰 때가 벌써 되었으니 이는 이제 우리의 구원이 처음 믿을 때보다 가까왔음이니라
  And do this, understanding the present time. The hour has come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.

12. 밤이 깊고 낮이 가까왔으니 그러므로 우리가 어두움의 일을 벗고 빛의 갑옷을 입자
  The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.

13. 낮에와 같이 단정히 행하고 방탕과 술 취하지 말며 음란과 호색하지 말며 쟁투와 시기하지 말고
  Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.

14. 오직 주 예수 그리스도로 옷 입고 정욕을 위하여 육신의 일을 도모하지 말라
  Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature.
