창세기 17

1. 아브람의 구십구 세 때에 여호와께서 아브람에게 나타나서 그에게 이르시되 나는 전능한 하나님이라 너는 내 앞에서 행하여 완전하라
  When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, "I am God Almighty; walk before me and be blameless.

2. 내가 내 언약을 나와 너 사이에 세워 너로 심히 번성케 하리라 하시니
  I will confirm my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers."

3. 아브람이 엎드린대 하나님이 또 그에게 일러 가라사대
  Abram fell facedown, and God said to him,

4. 내가 너와 내 언약을 세우니 너는 열국의 아비가 될찌라
  "As for me, this is my covenant with you: You will be the father of many nations.

5. 이제 후로는 네 이름을 아브람이라 하지 아니하고 아브라함이라 하리니 이는 내가 너로 열국의 아비가 되게 함이니라
  No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations.

6. 내가 너로 심히 번성케 하리니 나라들이 네게로 좇아 일어나며 열왕이 네게로 좇아 나리라
  I will make you very fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you.

7. 내가 내 언약을 나와 너와 네 대대 후손의 사이에 세워서 영원한 언약을 삼고 너와 네 후손의 하나님이 되리라
  I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.

8. 내가 너와 네 후손에게 너의 우거하는 이 땅 곧 가나안 일경으로 주어 영원한 기업이 되게 하고 나는 그들의 하나님이 되리라
  The whole land of Canaan, where you are now an alien, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God."

9. 하나님이 또 아브라함에게 이르시되 그런즉 너는 내 언약을 지키고 네 후손도 대대로 지키라
  Then God said to Abraham, "As for you, you must keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you for the generations to come.

10. 너희 중 남자는 다 할례를 받으라 이것이 나와 너희와 너희 후손 사이에 지킬 내 언약이니라
  This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: Every male among you shall be circumcised.

11. 너희는 양피를 베어라 이것이 나와 너희 사이의 언약의 표징이니라
  You are to undergo circumcision, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and you.

12. 대대로 남자는 집에서 난 자나 혹 너희 자손이 아니요 이방 사람에게서 돈으로 산 자를 무론하고 난 지 팔 일 만에 할례를 받을 것이라
  For the generations to come every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised, including those born in your household or bought with money from a foreigner--those who are not your offspring.

13. 너희 집에서 난 자든지 너희 돈으로 산 자든지 할례를 받아야 하리니 이에 내 언약이 너희 살에 있어 영원한 언약이 되려니와
  Whether born in your household or bought with your money, they must be circumcised. My covenant in your flesh is to be an everlasting covenant.

14. 할례를 받지 아니한 남자 곧 그 양피를 베지 아니한 자는 백성 중에서 끊어지리니 그가 내 언약을 배반하였음이니라
  Any uncircumcised male, who has not been circumcised in the flesh, will be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant."

15. 하나님이 또 아브라함에게 이르시되 네 아내 사래는 이름을 사래라 하지 말고 그 이름을 사라라 하라
  God also said to Abraham, "As for Sarai your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah.

16. 내가 그에게 복을 주어 그로 네게 아들을 낳아주게 하며 내가 그에게 복을 주어 그로 열국의 어미가 되게 하리니 민족의 열왕이 그에게서 나리라
  I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her."

17. 아브라함이 엎드리어 웃으며 심중에 이르되 백 세 된 사람이 어찌 자식을 낳을까 사라는 구십 세니 어찌 생산하리요 하고
  Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, "Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?"

18. 아브라함이 이에 하나님께 고하되 이스마엘이나 하나님 앞에 살기를 원하나이다
  And Abraham said to God, "If only Ishmael might live under your blessing!"

19. 하나님이 가라사대 아니라 네 아내 사라가 정녕 네게 아들을 낳으리니 너는 그 이름을 이삭이라 하라 내가 그와 내 언약을 세우리니 그의 후손에게 영원한 언약이 되리라
  Then God said, "Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him.

20. 이스마엘에게 이르러는 내가 네 말을 들었나니 내가 그에게 복을 주어 생육이 중다하여 그로 크게 번성케 할찌라 그가 열 두 방백을 낳으리니 내가 그로 큰 나라가 되게 하려니와
  And as for Ishmael, I have heard you: I will surely bless him; I will make him fruitful and will greatly increase his numbers. He will be the father of twelve rulers, and I will make him into a great nation.

21. 내 언약은 내가 명년 이 기한에 사라가 네게 낳을 이삭과 세우리라
  But my covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you by this time next year."

22. 하나님이 아브라함과 말씀을 마치시고 그를 떠나 올라가셨더라
  When he had finished speaking with Abraham, God went up from him.

23. 이에 아브라함이 하나님이 자기에게 말씀하신 대로 이 날에 그 아들 이스마엘과 집에서 생장한 모든 자와 돈으로 산 모든 자 곧 아브라함의 집 사람 중 모든 남자를 데려다가 그 양피를 베었으니
  On that very day Abraham took his son Ishmael and all those born in his household or bought with his money, every male in his household, and circumcised them, as God told him.

24. 아브라함이 그 양피를 벤 때는 구십구 세이었고
  Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised,

25. 그 아들 이스마엘이 그 양피를 벤 때는 십삼 세이었더라
  and his son Ishmael was thirteen;

26. 당일에 아브라함과 그 아들 이스마엘이 할례를 받았고
  Abraham and his son Ishmael were both circumcised on that same day.

27. 그 집의 모든 남자 곧 집에서 생장한 자와 돈으로 이방 사람에게서 사온 자가 다 그와 함께 할례를 받았더라
  And every male in Abraham's household, including those born in his household or bought from a foreigner, was circumcised with him.

마태복음 16

1. 바리새인과 사두개인들이 와서 예수를 시험하여 하늘로서 오는 표적 보이기를 청하니
  The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.

2. 예수께서 대답하여 가라사대 너희가 저녁에 하늘이 붉으면 날이 좋겠다 하고
  He replied, "When evening comes, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,'

3. 아침에 하늘이 붉고 흐리면 오늘은 날이 궂겠다 하나니 너희가 천기는 분별할 줄 알면서 시대의 표적은 분별할 수 없느냐
  and in the morning, 'Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.' You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.

4. 악하고 음란한 세대가 표적을 구하나 요나의 표적밖에는 보여 줄 표적이 없느니라 하시고 저희를 떠나가시다
  A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a miraculous sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah." Jesus then left them and went away.

5. 제자들이 건너편으로 갈쌔 떡 가져가기를 잊었더니
  When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread.

6. 예수께서 이르시되 삼가 바리새인과 사두개인들의 누룩을 주의하라 하신대
  "Be careful," Jesus said to them. "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."

7. 제자들이 서로 의논하여 가로되 우리가 떡을 가져오지 아니하였도다 하거늘
  They discussed this among themselves and said, "It is because we didn't bring any bread."

8. 예수께서 아시고 가라사대 믿음이 적은 자들아 어찌 떡이 없음으로 서로 의논하느냐
  Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, "You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread?

9. 너희가 아직도 깨닫지 못하느냐 떡 다섯 개로 오천 명을 먹이고 주운 것이 몇 바구니며
  Do you still not understand? Don't you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?

10. 떡 일곱 개로 사천 명을 먹이고 주운 것이 몇 광주리이던 것을 기억지 못하느냐
  Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?

11. 어찌 내 말한 것이 떡에 관함이 아닌 줄을 깨닫지 못하느냐 오직 바리새인과 사두개인들의 누룩을 주의하라 하시니
  How is it you don't understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."

12. 그제야 제자들이 떡의 누룩이 아니요 바리새인과 사두개인들의 교훈을 삼가라고 말씀하신 줄을 깨달으니라
  Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

13. 예수께서 가이사랴 빌립보 지방에 이르러 제자들에게 물어 가라사대 사람들이 인자를 누구라 하느냐
  When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?"

14. 가로되 더러는 세례 요한, 더러는 엘리야, 어떤 이는 예레미야나 선지자 중의 하나라 하나이다
  They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets."

15. 가라사대 너희는 나를 누구라 하느냐
  "But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?"

16. 시몬 베드로가 대답하여 가로되 주는 그리스도시요 살아 계신 하나님의 아들이시니이다
  Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

17. 예수께서 대답하여 가라사대 바요나 시몬아 네가 복이 있도다 이를 네게 알게 한 이는 혈육이 아니요 하늘에 계신 내 아버지시니라
  Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven.

18. 또 내가 네게 이르노니 너는 베드로라 내가 이 반석 위에 내 교회를 세우리니 음부의 권세가 이기지 못하리라
  And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.

19. 내가 천국 열쇠를 네게 주리니 네가 땅에서 무엇이든지 매면 하늘에서도 매일 것이요 네가 땅에서 무엇이든지 풀면 하늘에서도 풀리리라 하시고
  I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."

20. 이에 제자들을 경계하사 자기가 그리스도인 것을 아무에게도 이르지 말라 하시니라
  Then he warned his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Christ.

21. 이 때로부터 예수 그리스도께서 자기가 예루살렘에 올라가 장로들과 대제사장들과 서기관들에게 많은 고난을 받고 죽임을 당하고 제 삼 일에 살아나야 할 것을 제자들에게 비로소 가르치시니
  From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.

22. 베드로가 예수를 붙들고 간하여 가로되 주여 그리 마옵소서 이 일이 결코 주에게 미치지 아니하리이다
  Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. "Never, Lord!" he said. "This shall never happen to you!"

23. 예수께서 돌이키시며 베드로에게 이르시되 사단아 내 뒤로 물러가라 너는 나를 넘어지게 하는 자로다 네가 하나님의 일을 생각지 아니하고 도리어 사람의 일을 생각하는도다 하시고
  Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men."

24. 이에 예수께서 제자들에게 이르시되 아무든지 나를 따라오려거든 자기를 부인하고 자기 십자가를 지고 나를 좇을 것이니라
  Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

25. 누구든지 제 목숨을 구원코자 하면 잃을 것이요 누구든지 나를 위하여 제 목숨을 잃으면 찾으리라
  For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it.

26. 사람이 만일 온 천하를 얻고도 제 목숨을 잃으면 무엇이 유익하리요 사람이 무엇을 주고 제 목숨을 바꾸겠느냐
  What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?

27. 인자가 아버지의 영광으로 그 천사들과 함께 오리니 그 때에 각 사람의 행한 대로 갚으리라
  For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done.

28. 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 여기 섰는 사람 중에 죽기 전에 인자가 그 왕권을 가지고 오는 것을 볼 자들도 있느니라
  I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."

느헤미야 6

1. 산발랏과 도비야와 아라비아 사람 게셈과 그 나머지 우리의 대적이 내가 성을 건축하여 그 퇴락한 곳을 남기지 아니하였다 함을 들었는데 내가 아직 성문에 문짝을 달지 못한 때라
  When word came to Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab and the rest of our enemies that I had rebuilt the wall and not a gap was left in it--though up to that time I had not set the doors in the gates--

2. 산발랏과 게셈이 내게 보내어 이르기를 오라 우리가 오노 평지 한 촌에서 서로 만나자 하니 실상은 나를 해코자 함이라
  Sanballat and Geshem sent me this message: "Come, let us meet together in one of the villages on the plain of Ono." But they were scheming to harm me;

3. 내가 곧 저희에게 사자들을 보내어 이르기를 내가 이제 큰 역사를 하니 내려가지 못하겠노라 어찌하여 역사를 떠나 정지하게 하고 너희에게로 내려가겠느냐 하매
  so I sent messengers to them with this reply: "I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and go down to you?"

4. 저희가 네 번이나 이같이 내게 보내되 나는 여전히 대답하였더니
  Four times they sent me the same message, and each time I gave them the same answer.

5. 산발랏이 다섯 번째는 그 종자의 손에 봉하지 않은 편지를 들려 내게 보내었는데
  Then, the fifth time, Sanballat sent his aide to me with the same message, and in his hand was an unsealed letter

6. 그 글에 이르기를 이방 중에도 소문이 있고 가스무도 말하기를 네가 유다 사람들로 더불어 모반하려 하여 성을 건축한다 하나니 네가 그 말과 같이 왕이 되려 하는도다
  in which was written: "It is reported among the nations--and Geshem says it is true--that you and the Jews are plotting to revolt, and therefore you are building the wall. Moreover, according to these reports you are about to become their king

7. 또 네가 선지자를 세워 예루살렘에서 너를 들어 선전하기를 유다에 왕이 있다 하게 하였으니 이 말이 왕에게 들릴찌라 그런즉 너는 이제 오라 함께 의논하자 하였기로
  and have even appointed prophets to make this proclamation about you in Jerusalem: 'There is a king in Judah!' Now this report will get back to the king; so come, let us confer together."

8. 내가 보내어 저에게 이르기를 너의 말한 바 이런 일은 없는 일이요 네 마음에서 지어낸 것이라 하였나니
  I sent him this reply: "Nothing like what you are saying is happening; you are just making it up out of your head."

9. 이는 저희가 다 우리를 두렵게 하고자 하여 말하기를 저희 손이 피곤하여 역사를 정지하고 이루지 못하리라 함이라 이제 내 손을 힘있게 하옵소서 하였노라
  They were all trying to frighten us, thinking, "Their hands will get too weak for the work, and it will not be completed." But I prayed,"Now strengthen my hands."

10. 이 후에 므헤다벨의 손자 들라야의 아들 스마야가 두문불출하기로 내가 그 집에 가니 저가 이르기를 저희가 너를 죽이러 올 터이니 우리가 하나님의 전으로 가서 외소 안에 있고 그 문을 닫자 저희가 필연 밤에 와서 너를 죽이리라 하기로
  One day I went to the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, who was shut in at his home. He said, "Let us meet in the house of God, inside the temple, and let us close the temple doors, because men are coming to kill you--by night they are coming to kill you."

11. 내가 이르기를 나 같은 자가 어찌 도망하며 나 같은 몸이면 누가 외소에 들어가서 생명을 보존하겠느냐 나는 들어가지 않겠노라 하고
  But I said, "Should a man like me run away? Or should one like me go into the temple to save his life? I will not go!"

12. 깨달은즉 저는 하나님의 보내신 바가 아니라 도비야와 산발랏에게 뇌물을 받고 내게 이런 예언을 함이라
  I realized that God had not sent him, but that he had prophesied against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.

13. 저희가 뇌물을 준 까닭은 나를 두렵게 하고 이렇게 함으로 범죄하게 하고 악한 말을 지어 나를 비방하려 함이었느니라
  He had been hired to intimidate me so that I would commit a sin by doing this, and then they would give me a bad name to discredit me.

14. 내 하나님이여 도비야와 산발랏과 여선지 노아댜와 그 남은 선지자들 무릇 나를 두렵게 하고자 한 자의 소위를 기억하옵소서 하였노라
  Remember Tobiah and Sanballat, O my God, because of what they have done; remember also the prophetess Noadiah and the rest of the prophets who have been trying to intimidate me.

15. 성 역사가 오십이 일 만에 엘룰월 이십오일에 끝나매
  So the wall was completed on the twenty-fifth of Elul, in fifty-two days.

16. 우리 모든 대적과 사면 이방 사람들이 이를 듣고 다 두려워하여 스스로 낙담하였으니 이는 이 역사를 우리 하나님이 이루신 것을 앎이니라
  When all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid and lost their self-confidence, because they realized that this work had been done with the help of our God.

17. 그 때에 유다의 귀인들이 여러 번 도비야에게 편지하였고 도비야의 편지도 저희에게 이르렀으니
  Also, in those days the nobles of Judah were sending many letters to Tobiah, and replies from Tobiah kept coming to them.

18. 도비야는 아라의 아들 스가냐의 사위가 되었고 도비야의 아들 여호하난도 베레갸의 아들 므술람의 딸을 취하였으므로 유다에서 저와 동맹한 자가 많음이라
  For many in Judah were under oath to him, since he was son-in-law to Shecaniah son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam son of Berekiah.

19. 저희들이 도비야의 선행을 내 앞에 말하고 또 나의 말도 저에게 전하매 도비야가 항상 내게 편지하여 나를 두렵게 하고자 하였느니라
  Moreover, they kept reporting to me his good deeds and then telling him what I said. And Tobiah sent letters to intimidate me.

사도행전 16

1. 바울이 더베와 루스드라에도 이르매 거기 디모데라 하는 제자가 있으니 그 모친은 믿는 유대 여자요 부친은 헬라인이라
  He came to Derbe and then to Lystra, where a disciple named Timothy lived, whose mother was a Jewess and a believer, but whose father was a Greek.

2. 디모데는 루스드라와 이고니온에 있는 형제들에게 칭찬받는 자니
  The brothers at Lystra and Iconium spoke well of him.

3. 바울이 그를 데리고 떠나고자 할쌔 그 지경에 있는 유대인을 인하여 그를 데려다가 할례를 행하니 이는 그 사람들이 그의 부친은 헬라인인줄 다 앎이러라
  Paul wanted to take him along on the journey, so he circumcised him because of the Jews who lived in that area, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.

4. 여러 성으로 다녀갈 때에 예루살렘에 있는 사도와 장로들의 작정한 규례를 저희에게 주어 지키게 하니
  As they traveled from town to town, they delivered the decisions reached by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem for the people to obey.

5. 이에 여러 교회가 믿음이 더 굳어지고 수가 날마다 더하니라
  So the churches were strengthened in the faith and grew daily in numbers.

6. 성령이 아시아에서 말씀을 전하지 못하게 하시거늘 브루기아와 갈라디아 땅으로 다녀가
  Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia.

7. 무시아 앞에 이르러 비두니아로 가고자 애쓰되 예수의 영이 허락지 아니하시는지라
  When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to.

8. 무시아를 지나 드로아로 내려갔는데
  So they passed by Mysia and went down to Troas.

9. 밤에 환상이 바울에게 보이니 마게도냐 사람 하나가 서서 그에게 청하여 가로되 마게도냐로 건너와서 우리를 도우라 하거늘
  During the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him, "Come over to Macedonia and help us."

10. 바울이 이 환상을 본 후에 우리가 곧 마게도냐로 떠나기를 힘쓰니 이는 하나님이 저 사람들에게 복음을 전하라고 우리를 부르신 줄로 인정함이러라
  After Paul had seen the vision, we got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

11. 드로아에서 배로 떠나 사모드라게로 직행하여 이튿날 네압볼리로 가고
  From Troas we put out to sea and sailed straight for Samothrace, and the next day on to Neapolis.

12. 거기서 빌립보에 이르니 이는 마게도냐 지경 첫성이요 또 로마의 식민지라 이 성에서 수일을 유하다가
  From there we traveled to Philippi, a Roman colony and the leading city of that district of Macedonia. And we stayed there several days.

13. 안식일에 우리가 기도처가 있는가 하여 문 밖 강가에 나가 거기 앉아서 모인 여자들에게 말하더니
  On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there.

14. 두아디라 성의 자주 장사로서 하나님을 공경하는 루디아라 하는 한 여자가 들었는데 주께서 그 마음을 열어 바울의 말을 청종하게 하신지라
  One of those listening was a woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul's message.

15. 저와 그 집이 다 세례를 받고 우리에게 청하여 가로되 만일 나를 주 믿는 자로 알거든 내 집에 들어와 유하라 하고 강권하여 있게 하니라
  When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. "If you consider me a believer in the Lord," she said, "come and stay at my house." And she persuaded us.

16. 우리가 기도하는 곳에 가다가 점하는 귀신들린 여종 하나를 만나니 점으로 그 주인들을 크게 이하게 하는 자라
  Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling.

17. 바울과 우리를 좇아와서 소리질러 가로되 이 사람들은 지극히 높은 하나님의 종으로 구원의 길을 너희에게 전하는 자라 하며
  This girl followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, "These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved."

18. 이같이 여러 날을 하는지라 바울이 심히 괴로와하여 돌이켜 그 귀신에게 이르되 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 내가 네게 명하노니 그에게서 나오라 하니 귀신이 즉시 나오니라
  She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so troubled that he turned around and said to the spirit, "In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!" At that moment the spirit left her.

19. 종의 주인들은 자기 이익의 소망이 끊어진 것을 보고 바울과 실라를 잡아가지고 저자로 관원들에게 끌어갔다가
  When the owners of the slave girl realized that their hope of making money was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to face the authorities.

20. 상관들 앞에 데리고 가서 말하되 이 사람들이 유대인인데 우리 성을 심히 요란케 하여
  They brought them before the magistrates and said, "These men are Jews, and are throwing our city into an uproar

21. 로마 사람인 우리가 받지도 못하고 행치도 못할 풍속을 전한다 하거늘
  by advocating customs unlawful for us Romans to accept or practice."

22. 무리가 일제히 일어나 송사하니 상관들이 옷을 찢어 벗기고 매로 치라 하여
  The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas, and the magistrates ordered them to be stripped and beaten.

23. 많이 친 후에 옥에 가두고 간수에게 분부하여 든든히 지키라 하니
  After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully.

24. 그가 이러한 영을 받아 저희를 깊은 옥에 가두고 그 발을 착고에 든든히 채웠더니
  Upon receiving such orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks.

25. 밤중쯤 되어 바울과 실라가 기도하고 하나님을 찬미하매 죄수들이 듣더라
  About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.

26. 이에 홀연히 큰 지진이 나서 옥터가 움직이고 문이 곧 다 열리며 모든 사람의 매인 것이 다 벗어진지라
  Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everybody's chains came loose.

27. 간수가 자다가 깨어 옥문들이 열린 것을 보고 죄수들이 도망한 줄 생각하고 검을 빼어 자결하려 하거늘
  The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped.

28. 바울이 크게 소리질러 가로되 네 몸을 상하지 말라 우리가 다 여기 있노라 하니
  But Paul shouted, "Don't harm yourself! We are all here!"

29. 간수가 등불을 달라고 하며 뛰어들어가 무서워 떨며 바울과 실라 앞에 부복하고
  The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas.

30. 저희를 데리고 나가 가로되 선생들아 내가 어떻게 하여야 구원을 얻으리이까 하거늘
  He then brought them out and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"

31. 가로되 주 예수를 믿으라 그리하면 너와 네 집이 구원을 얻으리라 하고
  They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved--you and your household."

32. 주의 말씀을 그 사람과 그 집에 있는 모든 사람에게 전하더라
  Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house.

33. 밤 그 시에 간수가 저희를 데려다가 그 맞은 자리를 씻기고 자기와 그 권속이 다 세례를 받은 후
  At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his family were baptized.

34. 저희를 데리고 자기 집에 올라가서 음식을 차려 주고 저와 온 집이 하나님을 믿었으므로 크게 기뻐하니라
  The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God--he and his whole family.

35. 날이 새매 상관들이 아전을 보내어 이 사람들을 놓으라 하니
  When it was daylight, the magistrates sent their officers to the jailer with the order: "Release those men."

36. 간수가 이 말대로 바울에게 고하되 상관들이 사람을 보내어 너희를 놓으라 하였으니 이제는 나가서 평안히 가라 하거늘
  The jailer told Paul, "The magistrates have ordered that you and Silas be released. Now you can leave. Go in peace."

37. 바울이 이르되 로마 사람인 우리를 죄도 정치 아니하고 공중 앞에서 때리고 옥에 가두었다가 이제는 가만히 우리를 내어 보내고자 하느냐 아니라 저희가 친히 와서 우리를 데리고 나가야 하리라 한대
  But Paul said to the officers: "They beat us publicly without a trial, even though we are Roman citizens, and threw us into prison. And now do they want to get rid of us quietly? No! Let them come themselves and escort us out."

38. 아전들이 이 말로 상관들에게 고하니 저희가 로마 사람이라 하는 말을 듣고 두려워하여
  The officers reported this to the magistrates, and when they heard that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens, they were alarmed.

39. 와서 권하여 데리고 나가 성에서 떠나기를 청하니
  They came to appease them and escorted them from the prison, requesting them to leave the city.

40. 두 사람이 옥에서 나가 루디아의 집에 들어가서 형제들을 만나 보고 위로하고 가니라
  After Paul and Silas came out of the prison, they went to Lydia's house, where they met with the brothers and encouraged them. Then they left.
