【잠19:1 JFB】잠19:1-29.
1. (Compare 잠28:6). "Rich" for fool here. Integrity is better than riches (잠15:16, 17; 16:8).
【잠19:1 CWC】In these chapters we have a series of exhortations to a life of godliness expressed in general terms about as follows:
(1) Confidence in God as a wise ruler, chapter 16.
(2) A disposition of peacefulness and contentment, chapter 17.
(3) The virtues of affability, fidelity, and others of a social nature, chapter 18.
(4) Humility and meekness, chapter 19.
(5) Sobriety, diligence and kindness, chapter 21.
(6) Justice, patience, submission, chapter 21.
(7) The attainment and preservation of a good name, chapter 22.
(8) Warnings against avarice, licentiousness, and similar vices, chapter 23.
(9) Warnings against ungodly companionship, chapter 24.
【잠19:1 MHCC】A poor man who fears God, is more honourable and happy, than a man without wisdom and grace, however rich or advanced in rank.
【잠19:2 JFB】2. The last illustrates the first clause. Rashness, the result of ignorance, brings trouble.
【잠19:2 MHCC】What good can the soul do, if without knowledge? And he sins who will not take time to ponder the path of his feet.
【잠19:3 JFB】3. perverteth … way—turns him back from right (잠13:6; 약1:13); and he blames God for his failures.
【잠19:3 MHCC】Men run into troubles by their own folly, and then fret at the appointments of God.
【잠19:4 JFB】4. (Compare 잠14:20). Such facts are often adduced with implied disapprobation.
【잠19:4 MHCC】Here we may see how strong is men's love of money.
【잠19:5 JFB】5. Compare 잠19:9, where perish explains not escape here (compare 시88:9, 10).
【잠19:5 MHCC】Those that tell lies in discourse, are in a fair way to be guilty of bearing false-witness.
【잠19:6 MHCC】We are without excuse if we do not love God with all our hearts. His gifts to us are past number, and all the gifts of men to us are fruits of his bounty.
【잠19:7 MHCC】Christ was left by all his disciples; but the Father was with him. It encourages our faith that he had so large an experience of the sorrows of poverty.
【잠19:8 JFB】8. (Compare Margin;잠15:32).
loveth … soul—or, "himself," which he evinces by regarding his best interests.
keepeth—or, "regards."
【잠19:8 MHCC】Those only love their souls aright that get true wisdom.
【잠19:9 MHCC】Lying is a damning, destroying sin.
【잠19:10 JFB】10. (Compare 잠17:7). The fool is incapable of properly using pleasure as knowledge, yet for him to have it is less incongruous than the undue elevation of servants. Let each abide in his calling (고전7:20).
【잠19:10 MHCC】A man that has not wisdom and grace, has no right or title to true joy. It is very unseemly for one who is a servant to sin, to oppress God's free-men.
【잠19:11 JFB】11. (Compare 잠14:29; 16:32). This inculcation of a forgiving spirit shows that true religion is always the same (마5:22-24).
【잠19:11 MHCC】He attains the most true glory who endeavours most steadily to overcome evil with good.
【잠19:12 JFB】12. (Compare 잠16:14, 15; 20:2). A motive to submission to lawful authority.
【잠19:12 MHCC】Christ is a King, whose wrath against his enemies will be as the roaring of a lion, and his favour to his people as the refreshing dew.
【잠19:13 JFB】13. calamity—literally, "calamities," varied and many.
continual dropping—a perpetual annoyance, wearing out patience.
【잠19:13 MHCC】It shows the vanity of the world, that we are liable to the greatest griefs where we promise ourselves the greatest comfort.
【잠19:14 JFB】14. A contrast of men's gifts and God's, who, though author of both blessings, confers the latter by His more special providence.
and—or, "but," implying that the evils of 잠19:13 are only avoided by His care.
【잠19:14 MHCC】A discreet and virtuous wife is more valuable than house and riches.
【잠19:15 JFB】15. a deep sleep—a state of utter indifference.
idle soul—or, "person" (compare 잠10:4; 12:24).
【잠19:15 MHCC】A sluggish, slothful disposition makes men poor; it brings them to want. And this applies both to the present life and that which is to come.
【잠19:16 JFB】16. (Compare 잠10:17; 13:13).
despiseth … ways—opposed to keeping or observing, neglects (잠16:17) (as unworthy of regard) his moral conduct.
【잠19:16 MHCC】If we keep God's word, God's word will keep us from every thing really hurtful. We abuse the doctrine of free grace, if we think that it does away the necessity and advantage of obedience. Those that live at random must die. This truth is clearly taught in words enough to alarm the stoutest sinner.
【잠19:17 JFB】17. (Compare 잠14:21; 시37:26).
hath pity—shown by acts (compare Margin).
【잠19:17 MHCC】God has chosen the poor of this world, to be rich in faith, and heirs of his kingdom.
【잠19:18 JFB】18. (Compare 잠13:24; 23:13).
let not … spare—literally, "do not lift up thy soul" (시24:4; 25:1), that is, do not desire to his death; a caution to passionate parents against angry chastisement.
【잠19:18 MHCC】When parents keep under foolish tenderness, they do their best to render children a comfort to them, and happy in themselves.
【잠19:19 JFB】19. Repeated efforts of kindness are lost on ill-natured persons.
【잠19:19 MHCC】The spared and spoiled child is likely to become a man of great wrath.
【잠19:20 JFB】20. (Compare 잠13:18-20).
latter end—(잠5:11). In youth prepare for age.
【잠19:20 MHCC】Those that would be wise in their latter end, must be taught and ruled when young.
【잠19:21 JFB】21. (Compare 잠16:1, 9; 시33:10, 11). The failure of man's devices is implied.
【잠19:21 MHCC】What should we desire, but that all our purposes may agree with God's holy will?
【잠19:22 JFB】22. desire—that is, to do good, indicates a kind disposition (잠11:23); and the poor thus affected are better than liars, who say and do not.
【잠19:22 MHCC】It is far better to have a heart to do good, and want ability for it, than to have ability for it, and want a heart to it.
【잠19:23 JFB】23. The fear … life—(Compare 잠3:2).
abide—or, "remain contented" (딤전4:8).
not visited with evil—(잠10:3; 시37:25), as a judgment, in which sense visit is often used (시89:32; 렘6:15).
【잠19:23 MHCC】Those that live in the fear of God, shall get safety, satisfaction, and true and complete happiness.
【잠19:24 JFB】24. bosom—literally, a wide dish in which the hand was plunged in eating (마26:23). Compare 잠26:15, the sentiment expressed with equal irony and less exaggeration.
【잠19:24 MHCC】Indolence, when indulged, so grows upon people, that they have no heart to do the most needful things for themselves.
【잠19:25 JFB】25. Such is the benefit of reproof; even the simple profit, much more the wise.
【잠19:25 MHCC】A gentle rebuke goes farthest with a man of understanding.
【잠19:26 JFB】26. Unfilial conduct often condemned (잠17:21-25; 20:20; 신21:18, 21).
【잠19:26 MHCC】The young man who wastes his father's substance, or makes his aged mother destitute, is hateful, and will come to disgrace.
【잠19:27 JFB】27. Avoid whatever leads from truth.
【잠19:27 MHCC】It is the wisdom of young men to dread hearing such talk as puts loose and evil principles into the mind.
【잠19:28 JFB】28. ungodly witness—(Compare Margin), one false by bad principles (compare 잠6:12).
scorneth judgment—sets at naught the dictates of justice.
devoureth—literally, "swalloweth," as something delightful.
【잠19:28 MHCC】Those are the worst of sinners, who are glad of an opportunity to sin.
【잠19:29 MHCC】The unbelief of man shall not make God's threatenings of no effect. Christ himself, when bearing sins not his own, was not spared. Justice and judgment took hold of our blessed Surety; and will God spare obstinate sinners?
