Then Moab rebelled against Israel after the death of Ahab .

And Ahaziah fell down through a lattice in his upper chamber that was in Samaria , and was sick : and he sent messengers , and said unto them, Go , enquire of Baal–zebub the god of Ekron whether I shall recover of this disease .

But the angel of the Lord said to Elijah the Tishbite , Arise , go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria , and say unto them, Is it not because there is not a God in Israel , that ye go to enquire of Baal–zebub the god of Ekron ?
4. 그러므로 여호와의 말씀이 네가 올라간 침상에서 내려오지 못할지라 네가 반드시 죽으리라 하셨다 하라 엘리야가 이에 가니라
Now therefore thus saith the Lord , Thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up , but shalt surely die . And Elijah departed .
5. 사자들이 왕에게 돌아오니 왕이 이르되 너희는 어찌하여 돌아왔느냐
And when the messengers turned back unto him, he said unto them, Why are ye now turned back ?
6. 저희가 고하되 한 사람이 올라와서 우리를 만나 이르되 너희는 너희를 보낸 왕에게로 돌아가서 저에게 고하기를 여호와의 말씀이 이스라엘에 하나님이 없어서 네가 에그론의 신 바알세붑에게 물으려고 보내느냐 그러므로 네가 올라간 침상에서 내려오지 못할지라 네가 반드시 죽으리라 하셨다 하라 하더이다
And they said unto him, There came a man up to meet us, and said unto us, Go , turn again unto the king that sent you, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord , Is it not because there is not a God in Israel , that thou sendest to enquire of Baal–zebub the god of Ekron ? therefore thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up , but shalt surely die .
7. 왕이 저희에게 이르되 올라와서 너희를 만나 이 말을 너희에게 고한 그 사람의 모양이 어떠하더냐
And he said unto them, What manner of man was he which came up to meet you, and told you these words ?

And they answered him, He was an hairy man , and girt with a girdle of leather about his loins . And he said , It is Elijah the Tishbite .
9. 이에 오십부장과 그 오십 인을 엘리야에게로 보내매 저가 엘리야에게로 올라가서 본즉 산 꼭대기에 앉았는지라 저가 엘리야에게 이르되 하나님의 사람이여 왕의 말씀이 내려오라 하셨나이다
Then the king sent unto him a captain of fifty with his fifty . And he went up to him: and, behold, he sat on the top of an hill . And he spake unto him, Thou man of God , the king hath said , Come down .
10. 엘리야가 오십부장에게 대답하여 가로되 내가 만일 하나님의 사람이면 불이 하늘에서 내려와서 너와 너의 오십 인을 사를지로다 하매 불이 곧 하늘에서 내려와서 저와 그 오십 인을 살랐더라
And Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty , If I be a man of God , then let fire come down from heaven , and consume thee and thy fifty . And there came down fire from heaven , and consumed him and his fifty .
11. 왕이 다시 다른 오십부장과 그 오십 인을 엘리야에게로 보내니 저가 엘리야에게 일러 가로되 하나님의 사람이여 왕의 말씀이 속히 내려 오라 하셨나이다
Again also he sent unto him another captain of fifty with his fifty . And he answered and said unto him, O man of God , thus hath the king said , Come down quickly .
12. 엘리야가 저희에게 대답하여 가로되 내가 만일 하나님의 사람이면 불이 하늘에서 내려와서 너와 너의 오십 인을 사를지로다 하매 하나님의 불이 곧 하늘에서 내려와서 저와 그 오십 인을 살랐더라
And Elijah answered and said unto them, If I be a man of God , let fire come down from heaven , and consume thee and thy fifty . And the fire of God came down from heaven , and consumed him and his fifty .
13. 왕이 세번째 오십부장과 그 오십 인을 보낸지라 셋째 오십부장이 올라가서 엘리야의 앞에 이르러 꿇어 엎드려 간구하여 가로되 하나님의 사람이여 원컨대 나의 생명과 당신의 종인 이 오십 인의 생명을 당신은 귀히 보소서
And he sent again a captain of the third fifty with his fifty . And the third captain of fifty went up , and came and fell on his knees before Elijah , and besought him, and said unto him, O man of God , I pray thee, let my life , and the life of these fifty thy servants , be precious in thy sight .
14. 불이 하늘에서 내려와서 전번의 오십부장 둘과 그 오십 인들을 살랐거니와 나의 생명을 당신은 귀히 보소서 하매
Behold, there came fire down from heaven , and burnt up the two captains of the former fifties with their fifties : therefore let my life now be precious in thy sight .
15. 여호와의 사자가 엘리야에게 이르되 너는 저를 두려워 말고 함께 내려가라 하신지라 엘리야가 곧 일어나 저와 함께 내려와서 왕에게 이르러
And the angel of the Lord said unto Elijah , Go down with him: be not afraid of him . And he arose , and went down with him unto the king .
16. 고하되 여호와의 말씀이 네가 사자를 보내어 에그론의 신 바알세붑에게 물으려 하니 이스라엘에 그 말을 물을만한 하나님이 없음이냐 그러므로 네가 그 올라간 침상에서 내려오지 못할지라 네가 반드시 죽으리라 하셨다 하니라
And he said unto him, Thus saith the Lord , Forasmuch as thou hast sent messengers to enquire of Baal–zebub the god of Ekron , is it not because there is no God in Israel to enquire of his word ? therefore thou shalt not come down off that bed on which thou art gone up , but shalt surely die .
17. 왕이 엘리야의 전한 여호와의 말씀대로 죽고 저가 아들이 없으므로 여호람이 대신하여 왕이 되니 유다 왕 여호사밧의 아들 여호람의 제이년이었더라
So he died according to the word of the Lord which Elijah had spoken . And Jehoram reigned in his stead in the second year of Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah ; because he had no son .

Now the rest of the acts of Ahaziah which he did , are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel ?

【왕하1:1 JFB】왕하1:1. Moab Rebels.
1. Then Moab rebelled—Subdued by David (삼하8:2), they had, in the partition of Israel and Judah, fallen to the share of the former kingdom. But they took advantage of the death of Ahab to shake off the yoke (see on 왕하3:6). The casualty that befell Ahaziah [왕하1:2] prevented his taking active measures for suppressing this revolt, which was accomplished as a providential judgment on the house of Ahab for all these crimes.

1. His Last Commission, c. 1.
The story of Ahaziah's reign in the last chapter of First Kings, and he first verse of this lesson is a close link between the two books. It indicates that the death of Ahab and the accession of his son gave occasion to the Moabites for this uprising, the first since their conquest by David (삼하8:2).
"Baalzebub" (v. 2) "the lord of the fly" was the name under which the sun-god Baal was worshipped at Ekron, the city of the Philistines lying nearest to Ahaziah's capitol, Samaria. Probably the name comes from the supposition that he produced the flies and was consequently able to protect against them as a pest. The name is not to be confounded with "Beelzebub" of Matthew 10, although there may be a relation between the two. Observe the phrase at the beginning of verse 3, and recall what we have learnt about the Christophanies of the Old Testament.
In verses 9-12 Elijah, as the representative of God, is speaking in judgment against malefactors, for such the soldiers and the king behind them must be regarded. Had Elijah been apprehended of them it would have meant his death and a victory of the kingdom of darkness over the kingdom of light. How the fire came down and consumed the soldiers is not stated.
2. His Last Journey, 2:1-11.
The localities in the first five verses -- Gilgal, Bethel, Jericho, were doubtless where schools of the prophets had been established, as far back as Samuel's time, (삼상7:15-17.) These schools were for the training of godly youth in the law of God and the experience of a holy life. Elisha seems to have been among them while Elijah was their head at this period (v. 3). The awesome event about to transpire seems to have been revealed to them to some extent, explaining their communications to Elisha as well as his determination not to separate from Elijah till the end. The latter's indisposition to have himself accompanied is difficult to explain, some attributing it to his purpose of testing the fidelity of Elisha as qualifying him for his succession.
Of what earlier events does verse 8 remind you? How would you interpret Elisha's request in verse 9? Shall we say that it refers to 신21:17, where the law of the first-born is recorded? Elisha would have Elijah regard him as a first-born son, and give him, as compared with the other sons of the prophets, a richer measure of his prophetic spirit. He did not ask twice as much of the Holy Spirit as Elijah had which even on natural grounds Elijah could not have granted him. It is as a prophet that Elijah replies in verse 10. The translation in verse 11 suggests that of Enoch, that of Christ Himself, and that of the Church yet to occur. (창6:24; 히11:5; 행1:9; 살전4:17.)
3. His Last Token, vv. 12-18.
Elisha's expression (v. 12) means that Elijah had been the true defense of Israel rather than its military strength in chariots and horsemen. That defense was seen in his combating of idolatry which was Israel's real and only enemy. How otherwise does Elisha express his grief in this verse?
Compare the reference to Elijah's mantle (v. 13) 왕상19:19, and observe that its possession by Elisha is a token that his petition is answered and he has been endued for the prophetic office.
Is his question (v. 14) an expression of doubt or a prayer of faith? What does the result show (v. 15)?
The desire of the sons of the prophets (v. 16) is difficult to explain on the supposition that they had any clear idea that Elijah had gone into heaven. "Into heaven," might be rendered "toward heaven," and it may be questioned whether the prophet really went into heaven. "In My Father's house are many mansions," and Elijah, for the time being, may have been located at some other happy stopping place.
4. His Successor's Inaugural, vv. 19-25.
The concluding verses furnish two other tokens of Elisha's official character and power which may be considered in this lesson.
Of course it was neither the new cruse nor the salt that healed the water and made it usable and fructifying to the ground (vv. 19-21), but the power of God. They were symbols. The new cruse was necessary because every vessel used for a religious act in the service of Jehovah must be as yet unused, i. e. uncontaminated. The salt was a type of the purifying and restoring power which God would put forth on the spring.
The second evidence of Elisha's power (vv. 23-24), has its difficulties. "Little children" in the margin of the Revised Version is "young lads," and there is good authority for so considering it.
In Lange it is suggested that the young people recognized him as a prophet and opponent of the popular idolatrous worship whose principal seat was at Bethel. Therefore they called to him in mockery, "What dost thou want here among us?"
The epithet "bald head" was a standing insult for old or reverend people whether they were bald or not. It was not so much scorn of Elisha as of Jehovah Himself. (Compare 출16:8, 행5:4, etc.)
She-bears are ravenous, but how two could tear forty-two young people must remain a mystery for the present.
【왕하1:2 JFB】왕하1:2-8. Ahaziah's Judgment by Elijah.
2-8. Ahaziah fell down through a lattice in his upper chamber—This lattice was either a part of the wooden parapet, or fence, which surrounds the flat roofs of houses, and over which the king was carelessly leaning when it gave way; or it might be an opening like a skylight in the roof itself, done over with lattice-work, which, being slender or rotten, the king stepped on and slipped through. This latter supposition is most probably the true one, as Ahaziah did not fall either into the street or the court, but "in his upper chamber."
inquire of Baalzebub—Anxious to learn whether he should recover from the effects of this severe fall, he sent to consult Baalzebub, that is, the god of flies, who was considered the patron deity of medicine. A temple to that idol was erected at Ekron, which was resorted to far and wide, though it afterwards led to the destruction of the place (Z전9:5; 암1:8; 습2:4). "After visiting Ekron, 'the god of flies' is a name that gives me no surprise. The flies there swarmed, in fact so innumerably, that I could hardly get any food without these troublesome insects getting into it" [Van De Velde].
【왕하1:3 JFB】3. the angel of the Lord—not an angel, but the angel, who carried on all communications between the invisible God and His chosen people [Hengstenberg]. This angel commissioned Elijah to meet the king's messengers, to stop them peremptorily on the idolatrous errand, and convey by them to the king information of his approaching death. This consultation of an idol, being a breach of the fundamental law of the kingdom (출20:3; 신5:7), was a daring and deliberate rejection of the national religion. The Lord, in making this announcement of his death, designed that he should see in that event a judgment for his idolatry.

Thou shalt not come down from that bed—On being taken up, he had probably been laid on the divan—a raised frame, about three feet broad, extended along the sides of a room, covered with cushions and mattresses—serving, in short, as a sofa by day and a bed by night, and ascended by steps.
Elijah departed—to his ordinary abode, which was then at Mount Carmel (왕하2:25; 왕상18:42).

【왕하1:8 JFB】8. an hairy man—This was the description not of his person, as in the case of Esau, but of his dress, which consisted either of unwrought sheep or goatskins (히11:37), or of camel's haircloth—the coarser manufacture of this material like our rough haircloth. The Dervishes and Bedouins are attired in this wild, uncouth manner, while their hair flows loose on the head, their shaggy cloak is thrown over their shoulders and tied in front on the breast, naked, except at the waist, round which is a skin girdle—a broad, rough leathern belt. Similar to this was the girdle of the prophets, as in keeping with their coarse garments and their stern, uncompromising office.

9. Then the king sent unto him a captain of fifty—Any appearance of cruelty that there is in the fate of the two captains and their men will be removed, on a full consideration of the circumstances. God being the King of Israel, Ahaziah was bound to govern the kingdom according to the divine law; to apprehend the Lord's prophet, for discharging a commanded duty, was that of an impious and notorious rebel. The captains abetted the king in his rebellion; and they exceeded their military duty by contemptuous insults.
man of God—In using this term, they either spoke derisively, believing him to be no true prophet; or, if they regarded him as a true prophet, the summons to him to surrender himself bound to the king was a still more flagrant insult; the language of the second captain being worse than that of the first.
【왕하1:10 JFB】10. let fire come down—rather, "fire shall come down." Not to avenge a personal insult of Elijah, but an insult upon God in the person of His prophet; and the punishment was inflicted, not by the prophet, but by the direct hand of God.

Though he well knew how obnoxious his presence was to the king, yet, on receiving God's command, he goes unhesitatingly, and repeats, with his own lips, the unwelcome tidings conveyed by the messengers.
