A Song of degrees . Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth , may Israel now say :
Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth : yet they have not prevailed against me.
The plowers plowed upon my back : they made long their furrows .
The Lord is righteous : he hath cut asunder the cords of the wicked .
Let them all be confounded and turned back that hate Zion .
Let them be as the grass upon the housetops , which withereth afore it groweth up :
Wherewith the mower filleth not his hand ; nor he that bindeth sheaves his bosom .
Neither do they which go by say , The blessing of the Lord be upon you: we bless you in the name of the Lord .

【시129:1 JFB】시129:1-8. The people of God, often delivered from enemies, are confident of His favor, by their overthrow in the future.
1, 2. may Israel now say—or, "oh! let Israel say" (시124:1). Israel's youth was the sojourn in Egypt (렘2:2; 호2:15).
【시129:1 CWC】This group is differentiated by the title attached to each, "A Song of Degrees," or "A Song of Ascents." The title seems derived from the going up of the people to Jerusalem at the great festivals which came three times a year. (Compare 신16:16; 왕상12:27, 28, etc.); the thought being that they chanted the psalms at different stages in their journey.
The pertinency of this application of these psalms is more apparent in some than others. For example. Psalm 121 represents the pilgrim looking towards the goal of his journey, and inspired by its contemplation to apply the thought of the strength of its hills to the care of God for His people, and especially His care for them on their journey, by night or day (vv. 3-6). The spiritual application is easily suggestive. Psalms 124, 126, 129 and 130, suggest the Babylonian captivity. Psalm 134 represents the companies arriving at the sanctuary and calling on the priests to unite in praising God on their behalf, to which the priests reply in the language of the Mosaic blessing which they only could pronounce (v. 3).
Of the whole group Psalm 132 is the most important in some respects. May Solomon have been its author? It opens with a declaration of his father David's zeal for the building of the temple (vv. 1-7). "Ephratah" (v. 6) is another name for Bethlehem (창48:7). "The fields of the wood" stands for "Jair" or "Kirjath-jearim" whence the ark was brought up by David to Jerusalem. The psalm next pleads with God for fulfillment of His promises to David concerning the temple (vv. 8-18). The Solomonic application is clear in verses 10-12, and yet, it has a typical reference to the Kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ.
【시129:1 MHCC】The enemies of God's people have very barbarously endeavoured to wear out the saints of the Most High. But the church has been always graciously delivered. Christ has built his church upon a rock. And the Lord has many ways of disabling wicked men from doing the mischief they design against his church. The Lord is righteous in not suffering Israel to be ruined; he has promised to preserve a people to himself.
【시129:2 JFB】2. prevailed—literally, "been able," that is, to accomplish their purpose against me (시13:4).
【시129:3 JFB】3, 4. The ploughing is a figure of scourging, which most severe physical infliction aptly represents all kinds.
【시129:4 JFB】4. the cords—that is, which fasten the plough to the ox; and cutting denotes God's arresting the persecution;
【시129:5 JFB】5, 6. The ill-rooted roof grass, which withers before it grows up and procures for those gathering it no harvest blessing (룻2:4), sets forth the utter uselessness and the rejection of the wicked.
【시129:5 MHCC】While God's people shall flourish as the loaded palm-tree, or the green and fruitful olive, their enemies shall wither as the grass upon the house-tops, which in eastern countries are flat, and what grows there never ripens; so it is with the designs of God's enemies. No wise man will pray the Lord to bless these mowers or reapers. And when we remember how Jesus arose and reigns; how his people have been supported, like the burning but unconsumed bush, we shall not fear.
