■ 이사야 64장

1. 원컨대 주는 하늘을 가르고 강림하시고 주의 앞에서 산들로 진동하기를

  Oh that thou wouldest rend the heavens , that thou wouldest come down , that the mountains might flow down at thy presence ,

 

2. 불이 섶을 사르며 불이 물을 끓임 같게 하사 주의 대적으로 주의 이름을 알게 하시며 열방으로 주의 앞에서 떨게 하옵소서

  As when the melting fire burneth , the fire causeth the waters to boil , to make thy name known to thine adversaries , that the nations may tremble at thy presence !

 

3. 주께서 강림하사 우리의 생각 밖에 두려운 일을 행하시던 그 때에 산들이 주의 앞에서 진동하였사오니

  When thou didst terrible things which we looked not for, thou camest down , the mountains flowed down at thy presence .

 

4. 주 외에는 자기를 앙망하는 자를 위하여 이런 일을 행한 신을 예로부터 들은 자도 없고 귀로 깨달은 자도 없고 눈으로 본 자도 없었나이다

  For since the beginning of the world men have not heard , nor perceived by the ear , neither hath the eye seen , O God , beside thee, what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him.

 

5. 주께서 기쁘게 의를 행하는 자와 주의 길에서 주를 기억하는 자를 선대하시거늘 우리가 범죄하므로 주께서 진노하셨사오며 이 현상이 이미 오랬사오니 우리가 어찌 구원을 얻을 수 있으리이까

  Thou meetest him that rejoiceth and worketh righteousness , those that remember thee in thy ways : behold, thou art wroth ; for we have sinned : in those is continuance , and we shall be saved .

 

6. 대저 우리는 다 부정한 자 같아서 우리의 의는 다 더러운 옷 같으며 우리는 다 쇠패함이 잎사귀 같으므로 우리의 죄악이 바람 같이 우리를 몰아 가나이다

  But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags ; and we all do fade as a leaf ; and our iniquities , like the wind , have taken us away .

 

7. 주의 이름을 부르는 자가 없으며 스스로 분발하여 주를 붙잡는 자가 없사오니 이는 주께서 우리에게 얼굴을 숨기시며 우리의 죄악을 인하여 우리로 소멸되게 하셨음이니라

  And there is none that calleth upon thy name , that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities .

 

8. 그러나 여호와여 주는 우리 아버지시니이다 우리는 진흙이요 주는 토기장이시니 우리는 다 주의 손으로 지으신 것이라

  But now, O Lord , thou art our father ; we are the clay , and thou our potter ; and we all are the work of thy hand .

 

9. 여호와여 과히 분노하지 마옵시며 죄악을 영영히 기억하지 마옵소서 구하오니 보시옵소서 보시옵소서 우리는 다 주의 백성이니이다

  Be not wroth very sore , O Lord , neither remember iniquity for ever : behold, see , we beseech thee, we are all thy people .

 

10. 주의 거룩한 성읍들이 광야가 되었으며 시온이 광야가 되었으며 예루살렘이 황폐하였나이다

  Thy holy cities are a wilderness , Zion is a wilderness , Jerusalem a desolation .

 

11. 우리 열조가 주를 찬송하던 우리의 거룩하고 아름다운 전이 불에 탔으며 우리의 즐거워하던 곳이 다 황무하였나이다

  Our holy and our beautiful house , where our fathers praised thee, is burned up with fire : and all our pleasant things are laid waste .

 

12. 여호와여 일이 이러하거늘 주께서 오히려 스스로 억제하시리이까 주께서 오히려 잠잠하시고 우리로 심한 괴로움을 받게 하시리이까

  Wilt thou refrain thyself for these things, O Lord ? wilt thou hold thy peace , and afflict us very sore ?

【사64:1 JFB】사64:1-12. Transition from Complaint to Prayer.
1. rend … heavens—bursting forth to execute vengeance, suddenly descending on Thy people's foe (시18:9; 144:5; 합3:5, 6).
flow down—(유5:5; 미1:4).

 

【사64:1 CWC】[MEETING OF THE AGES]
We are drawing to the end of the present, and the opening of the Millennial age. The prophet's eye rests on the time when Israel is back in her land, the majority still unconverted to Christ and worshiping in a restored temple. There is a faithful remnant waiting for Him, though enduring the persecution of the false christ. This persecution may often be felt at the hands of their own brethren after the flesh. These facts must be assumed in the interpretation of these chanters, though they will not appear strange to any who have studied the preceding books in this commentary.
Chapter 58 opens with a renewal of the prophetic commission, suggesting that at the time of the end there will be a special heralding of the Lord's Coming as there was at His first coming (말4:5-6). Indeed the whole chapter suggests the preaching of John the Baptist. Their complaint in verse 3 is answered in the verses that follow (vv. 4-7). Their blessing depends on obedience (vv. 8-14).
Chapter 59 continues the thought, leading into a revelation of the divine purpose to interpose on their behalf in the person of the Redeemer. This interposition is for judgment (vv. 15-19), but to the penitent and believing it means forgiveness, sanctification and blessing forever (vv. 20-21).
Chapter 60 carries on the description of the blessing. It has actually come. The rest of the world may yet be in darkness, but not Israel (vv. 1, 2). Moreover, the latter has become light for all the rest. Millennial blessing pervades the whole earth (vv. 3-11). Israel is the arbiter of the Gentile nations (v. 12), and the latter are contributing to her greatness and benefit (vv. 14-16). Now the whole of Israel is converted and she has become great (vv. 21-22).
Chapter 61 shows the cause of the foregoing to be the work of the Messiah on Israel's behalf (vv. 1-3). The first part of this prediction was fulfilled at the first coming of Christ (see 눅4:16-20). The first part ended at the proclamation of "the acceptable year of the Lord" (v. 3), but the second part begins "at the day of vengeance of our God." This is the second coming. The rest of the chanter repeats what was said of the future blessings in the preceding one.
Chapter 62 carries on the thought of 61. Help will be found by reading the Revised Version side by side with the King James, and especially by observing the marginal readings.
Chapter 63 begins with the picture of judgment. The day of vengeance is ushered in by the coming of the Avenger, Christ, on behalf of His people against the oppressing Gentiles (vv. 1-6). The remainder of the chapter is identified with the following one, the two composing the intercessory prayer of penitent Israel in that day. Read and compare it with Nehemiah's prayer in the first chapter of his book and with that of Daniel 9. It also suggests many of the psalms. The closing two chapters are the answer to this prayer, and require no comment in the light of the principles of interpretation illustrated before.

사64:1-5 They desire that God would manifest himself to them and for them, so that all may see it. This is applicable to the second coming of Christ, when the Lord himself shall descend from heaven. They plead what God had used to do, and had declared his gracious purpose to do, for his people. They need not fear being disappointed of it, for it is sure; or disappointed in it, for it is sufficient. The happiness of his people is bound up in what God has designed for them, and is preparing for them, and preparing them for; what he has done or will do. Can we believe this, and then think any thing too great to expect from his truth, power, and love? It is spiritual and cannot be comprehended by human understanding. It is ever ready. See what communion there is between a gracious God and a gracious soul. We must make conscience of doing our duty in every thing the Lord our God requires. Thou meetest him; this speaks his freeness and forwardness in doing them good. Though God has been angry with us for our sins, and justly, yet his anger has soon ended; but in his favour is life, which goes on and continues, and on that we depend for our salvation.
 
사64:6-12 The people of God, in affliction, confess and bewail their sins, owning themselves unworthy of his mercy. Sin is that abominable thing which the Lord hates. Our deeds, whatever they may seem to be, if we think to merit by them at God's hand, are as rags, and will not cover us; filthy rags, and will but defile us. Even our few good works in which there is real excellence, as fruits of the Spirit, are so defective and defiled as done by us, that they need to be washed in the fountain open for sin and uncleanness. It bodes ill when prayer is kept back. To pray, is by faith to take hold of the promises the Lord has made of his good-will to us, and to plead them; to take hold of him, earnestly begging him not to leave us; or soliciting his return. They brought their troubles upon themselves by their own folly. Sinners are blasted, and then carried away, by the wind of their own iniquity; it withers and then ruins them. When they made themselves as an unclean thing, no wonder that God loathed them. Foolish and careless as we are, poor and despised, yet still Thou art our Father. It is the wrath of a Father we are under, who will be reconciled; and the relief our case requires is expected only from him. They refer themselves to God. They do not say, 'Lord, rebuke us not,' for that may be necessary; but, 'Not in thy displeasure.' They state their lamentable condition. See what ruin sin brings upon a people; and an outward profession of holiness will be no defence against it. God's people presume not to tell him what he shall say, but their prayer is, Speak for the comfort and relief of thy people. How few call upon the Lord with their whole hearts, or stir themselves to lay hold upon him! God may delay for a time to answer our prayers, but he will, in the end, answer those who call on his name and hope in his mercy.

terrible things—(시65:5).
we looked not for—far exceeding the expectation of any of our nation; unparalleled before (출34:10; 시68:8).
camest down—on Mount Sinai.
mountains flowed—Repeated from 사64:1; they pray God to do the very same things for Israel now as in former ages. Gesenius, instead of "flowed" here, and "flow" in 사64:1, translates from a different Hebrew root, "quake … quaked"; but "fire" melts and causes to flow, rather than to quake (사64:2).

 

【사64:4 JFB】4. perceived by the ear—Paul (고전2:9) has for this, "nor have entered into the heart of man"; the virtual sense, sanctioned by his inspired authority; men might hear with the outward ear, but they could only by the Spirit "perceive" with the "heart" the spiritual significancy of God's acts, both those in relation to Israel, primarily referred to here, and those relating to the Gospel secondarily, which Paul refers to.
O God … what he … prepared—rather, "nor hath eye seen a god beside thee who doeth such things." They refer to God's past marvellous acts in behalf of Israel as a plea for His now interposing for His people; but the Spirit, as Paul by inspiration shows, contemplated further God's revelation in the Gospel, which abounds in marvellous paradoxes never before heard of by carnal ear, not to be understood by mere human sagacity, and when foretold by the prophets not fully perceived or credited; and even after the manifestation of Christ not to be understood save through the inward teaching of the Holy Ghost. These are partly past and present, and partly future; therefore Paul substitutes "prepared" for "doeth," though his context shows he includes all three. For "waiteth" he has "love Him"; godly waiting on Him must flow from love, and not mere fear.

rejoiceth and worketh—that is, who with joyful willingness worketh [Gesenius] (행10:35; 요7:17).
those—Thou meetest "those," in apposition to "him" who represents a class whose characteristics "those that," &c., more fully describes.
remember thee in thy ways—(사26:8).
sinned—literally, "tripped," carrying on the figure in "ways."
in those is continuance—a plea to deprecate the continuance of God's wrath; it is not in Thy wrath that there is continuance (사54:7, 8; 시30:5; 103:9), but in Thy ways ("those"), namely, of covenant mercy to Thy people (미7:18-20; 말3:6); on the strength of the everlasting continuance of His covenant they infer by faith, "we shall be saved." God "remembered" for them His covenant (시106:45), though they often "remembered not" Him (시78:42). Castellio translates, "we have sinned for long in them ('thy ways'), and could we then be saved?" But they hardly would use such a plea when their very object was to be saved.

 

【사64:6 JFB】6. unclean thing—legally unclean, as a leper. True of Israel, everywhere now cut off by unbelief and by God's judgments from the congregation of the saints.
righteousness—plural, "uncleanness" extended to every particular act of theirs, even to their prayers and praises. True of the best doings of the unregenerate (빌3:6-8; 딛1:15; 히11:6).
filthy rags—literally, a "menstruous rag" (레15:33; 20:18; 애1:17).
fade … leaf—(시90:5, 6).

 

【사64:7 JFB】7. stirreth—rouseth himself from spiritual drowsiness.
take hold—(사27:5).

 

【사64:8 JFB】8. father—(사63:16).
clay … potter—(사29:16; 45:9). Unable to mould themselves aright, they beg the sovereign will of God to mould them unto salvation, even as He made them at the first, and is their "Father."

we are … thy people—(렘14:9, 21).

 

【사64:10 JFB】10. holy cities—No city but Jerusalem is called "the holy city" (사48:2; 52:1); the plural, therefore, refers to the upper and the lower parts of the same city Jerusalem [Vitringa]; or all Judea was holy to God, so its cities were deemed "holy" [Maurer]. But the parallelism favors Vitringa. Zion and Jerusalem (the one city) answering to "holy cities."

beautiful—includes the idea of glorious (막13:1; 행3:2).
burned—(시74:7; 애2:7; 대하36:19). Its destruction under Nebuchadnezzar prefigured that under Titus.
pleasant things—Hebrew, "objects of desire"; our homes, our city, and all its dear associations.
