And it came to pass, when the Lord would take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind , that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal .

And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went , and stood to view afar off : and they two stood by Jordan .

And Elijah took his mantle , and wrapped it together , and smote the waters , and they were divided hither and thither, so that they two went over on dry ground.
9. 건너매 엘리야가 엘리사에게 이르되 나를 네게서 취하시기 전에 내가 네게 어떻게 할 것을 구하라 엘리사가 가로되 당신의 영감이 갑절이나 내게 있기를 구하나이다
And it came to pass, when they were gone over , that Elijah said unto Elisha , Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said , I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.
10. 가로되 네가 어려운 일을 구하는도다 그러나 나를 네게서 취하시는 것을 네가 보면 그 일이 네게 이루려니와 그렇지 않으면 이루지 아니하리라 하고
And he said , Thou hast asked a hard thing : nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.
11. 두 사람이 행하며 말하더니 홀연히 불수레와 불말들이 두 사람을 격하고 엘리야가 회리바람을 타고 승천하더라
And it came to pass, as they still went on , and talked , that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire , and horses of fire , and parted them both asunder ; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven .
12. 엘리사가 보고 소리 지르되 내 아버지여 내 아버지여 이스라엘의 병거와 그 마병이여 하더니 다시 보이지 아니하는지라 이에 엘리사가 자기의 옷을 잡아 둘에 찢고
And Elisha saw it, and he cried , My father , my father , the chariot of Israel , and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes , and rent them in two pieces .
13. 엘리야의 몸에서 떨어진 겉옷을 주워가지고 돌아와서 요단 언덕에 서서
He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back , and stood by the bank of Jordan ;
14. 엘리야의 몸에서 떨어진 그 겉옷을 가지고 물을 치며 가로되 엘리야의 하나님 여호와는 어디 계시니이까 하고 저도 물을 치매 물이 이리 저리 갈라지고 엘리사가 건너니라
And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters , and said , Where is the Lord God of Elijah ? and when he also had smitten the waters , they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over .
15. 맞은편 여리고에 있는 선지자의 생도들이 저를 보며 말하기를 엘리야의 영감이 엘리사의 위에 머물렀다 하고 가서 저를 영접하여 그 앞에서 땅에 엎드리고
And when the sons of the prophets which were to view at Jericho saw him, they said , The spirit of Elijah doth rest on Elisha . And they came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him.
16. 가로되 당신의 종들에게 용사 오십 인이 있으니 청컨대 저희로 가서 당신의 주를 찾게 하소서 염려컨대 여호와의 신이 저를 들어 가다가 어느 산에나 어느 골짜기에 던지셨을까 하나이다 엘리사가 가로되 보내지 말라 하나
And they said unto him, Behold now, there be with thy servants fifty strong men ; let them go , we pray thee, and seek thy master : lest peradventure the Spirit of the Lord hath taken him up , and cast him upon some mountain , or into some valley . And he said , Ye shall not send .
17. 무리가 저로 부끄러워 하도록 강청하매 보내라 한지라 저희가 오십 인을 보내었더니 사흘을 찾되 발견하지 못하고
And when they urged him till he was ashamed , he said , Send . They sent therefore fifty men ; and they sought three days , but found him not.
18. 엘리사가 여리고에 머무는 중에 무리가 저에게 돌아오니 엘리사가 저희에게 이르되 내가 가지 말라고 너희에게 이르지 아니하였느냐 하였더라
And when they came again to him, (for he tarried at Jericho ,) he said unto them, Did I not say unto you, Go not?
19. 그 성 사람들이 엘리사에게 고하되 우리 주께서 보시는 바와 같이 이 성읍의 터는 아름다우나 물이 좋지 못하므로 토산이 익지 못하고 떨어지나이다
And the men of the city said unto Elisha , Behold, I pray thee, the situation of this city is pleasant , as my lord seeth : but the water is naught , and the ground barren .
20. 엘리사가 가로되 새 그릇에 소금을 담아 내게로 가져오라 하매 곧 가져온지라
And he said , Bring me a new cruse , and put salt therein. And they brought it to him.
21. 엘리사가 물 근원으로 나아가서 소금을 그 가운데 던지며 가로되 여호와의 말씀이 내가 이 물을 고쳤으니 이로 좇아 다시는 죽음이나 토산이 익지 못하고 떨어짐이 없을지니라 하셨느니라 하니
And he went forth unto the spring of the waters , and cast the salt in there, and said , Thus saith the Lord , I have healed these waters ; there shall not be from thence any more death or barren land.
22. 그 물이 엘리사의 말과 같이 고쳐져서 오늘날에 이르렀더라
So the waters were healed unto this day , according to the saying of Elisha which he spake .
23. 엘리사가 거기서 벧엘로 올라가더니 길에 행할 때에 젊은 아이들이 성에서 나와서 저를 조롱하여 가로되 대머리여 올라가라 대머리여 올라가라 하는지라
And he went up from thence unto Beth–el : and as he was going up by the way , there came forth little children out of the city , and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up , thou bald head ; go up , thou bald head .

And he turned back , and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the Lord . And there came forth two she bears out of the wood , and tare forty and two children of them.

And he went from thence to mount Carmel , and from thence he returned to Samaria .

【왕하2:1 JFB】왕하2:1-10. Elijah Divines Jordan.
1-7. when the Lord would take up Elijah—A revelation of this event had been made to the prophet; but, unknown to him, it had also been revealed to his disciples, and to Elisha in particular, who kept constantly beside him.
Gilgal—This Gilgal (Jiljil) was near Ebal and Gerizim; a school of the prophets was established there. At Beth-el there was also a school of the prophets, which Elijah had founded, notwithstanding that place was the headquarters of the calf-worship; and at Jericho there was another [왕하2:4]. In travelling to these places, which he had done through the impulse of the Spirit (왕하2:2, 4-6), Elijah wished to pay a farewell visit to these several institutions, which lay on his way to the place of ascension and, at the same time, from a feeling of humility and modesty, to be in solitude, where there would be no eye-witnesses of his glorification. All his efforts, however, to prevail on his attendant to remain behind, were fruitless. Elisha knew that the time was at hand, and at every place the sons of the prophets spoke to him of the approaching removal of his master. Their last stage was at the Jordan. They were followed at a distance by fifty scholars of the prophets, from Jericho, who were desirous, in honor of the great occasion, to witness the miraculous translation of the prophet. The revelation of this striking event to so many was a necessary part of the dispensation; for it was designed to be under the law, like that of Enoch in the patriarchal age, a visible proof of another state, and a type of the resurrection of Christ.

1. His Last Commission, c. 1.
The story of Ahaziah's reign in the last chapter of First Kings, and he first verse of this lesson is a close link between the two books. It indicates that the death of Ahab and the accession of his son gave occasion to the Moabites for this uprising, the first since their conquest by David (삼하8:2).
"Baalzebub" (v. 2) "the lord of the fly" was the name under which the sun-god Baal was worshipped at Ekron, the city of the Philistines lying nearest to Ahaziah's capitol, Samaria. Probably the name comes from the supposition that he produced the flies and was consequently able to protect against them as a pest. The name is not to be confounded with "Beelzebub" of Matthew 10, although there may be a relation between the two. Observe the phrase at the beginning of verse 3, and recall what we have learnt about the Christophanies of the Old Testament.
In verses 9-12 Elijah, as the representative of God, is speaking in judgment against malefactors, for such the soldiers and the king behind them must be regarded. Had Elijah been apprehended of them it would have meant his death and a victory of the kingdom of darkness over the kingdom of light. How the fire came down and consumed the soldiers is not stated.
2. His Last Journey, 2:1-11.
The localities in the first five verses -- Gilgal, Bethel, Jericho, were doubtless where schools of the prophets had been established, as far back as Samuel's time, (삼상7:15-17.) These schools were for the training of godly youth in the law of God and the experience of a holy life. Elisha seems to have been among them while Elijah was their head at this period (v. 3). The awesome event about to transpire seems to have been revealed to them to some extent, explaining their communications to Elisha as well as his determination not to separate from Elijah till the end. The latter's indisposition to have himself accompanied is difficult to explain, some attributing it to his purpose of testing the fidelity of Elisha as qualifying him for his succession.
Of what earlier events does verse 8 remind you? How would you interpret Elisha's request in verse 9? Shall we say that it refers to 신21:17, where the law of the first-born is recorded? Elisha would have Elijah regard him as a first-born son, and give him, as compared with the other sons of the prophets, a richer measure of his prophetic spirit. He did not ask twice as much of the Holy Spirit as Elijah had which even on natural grounds Elijah could not have granted him. It is as a prophet that Elijah replies in verse 10. The translation in verse 11 suggests that of Enoch, that of Christ Himself, and that of the Church yet to occur. (창6:24; 히11:5; 행1:9; 살전4:17.)
3. His Last Token, vv. 12-18.
Elisha's expression (v. 12) means that Elijah had been the true defense of Israel rather than its military strength in chariots and horsemen. That defense was seen in his combating of idolatry which was Israel's real and only enemy. How otherwise does Elisha express his grief in this verse?
Compare the reference to Elijah's mantle (v. 13) 왕상19:19, and observe that its possession by Elisha is a token that his petition is answered and he has been endued for the prophetic office.
Is his question (v. 14) an expression of doubt or a prayer of faith? What does the result show (v. 15)?
The desire of the sons of the prophets (v. 16) is difficult to explain on the supposition that they had any clear idea that Elijah had gone into heaven. "Into heaven," might be rendered "toward heaven," and it may be questioned whether the prophet really went into heaven. "In My Father's house are many mansions," and Elijah, for the time being, may have been located at some other happy stopping place.
4. His Successor's Inaugural, vv. 19-25.
The concluding verses furnish two other tokens of Elisha's official character and power which may be considered in this lesson.
Of course it was neither the new cruse nor the salt that healed the water and made it usable and fructifying to the ground (vv. 19-21), but the power of God. They were symbols. The new cruse was necessary because every vessel used for a religious act in the service of Jehovah must be as yet unused, i. e. uncontaminated. The salt was a type of the purifying and restoring power which God would put forth on the spring.
The second evidence of Elisha's power (vv. 23-24), has its difficulties. "Little children" in the margin of the Revised Version is "young lads," and there is good authority for so considering it.
In Lange it is suggested that the young people recognized him as a prophet and opponent of the popular idolatrous worship whose principal seat was at Bethel. Therefore they called to him in mockery, "What dost thou want here among us?"
The epithet "bald head" was a standing insult for old or reverend people whether they were bald or not. It was not so much scorn of Elisha as of Jehovah Himself. (Compare 출16:8, 행5:4, etc.)
She-bears are ravenous, but how two could tear forty-two young people must remain a mystery for the present.
【왕하2:1 MHCC】The Lord had let Elijah know that his time was at hand. He therefore went to the different schools of the prophets to give them his last exhortations and blessing. The removal of Elijah was a type and figure of the ascension of Christ, and the opening of the kingdom of heaven to all believers. Elisha had long followed Elijah, and he would not leave him now when he hoped for the parting blessing. Let not those who follow Christ come short by tiring at last. The waters of Jordan, of old, yielded to the ark; now, to the prophet's mantle, as a token of God's presence. When God will take up his faithful ones to heaven, death is the Jordan which they must pass through, and they find a way through it. The death of Christ has divided those waters, that the ransomed of the Lord may pass over. O death, where is thy sting, thy hurt, thy terror!

let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me—This request was not, as is commonly supposed, for the power of working miracles exceeding the magnitude and number of his master's, nor does it mean a higher endowment of the prophetic spirit; for Elisha was neither superior to, nor perhaps equally great with, his predecessor. But the phrase, "a double portion," was applied to the first-born [신21:17], and therefore Elisha's request was, simply, to be heir to the prophetic office and gifts of his master.
【왕하2:9 MHCC】That fulness, from whence prophets and apostles had all their supply, still exists as of old, and we are told to ask large supplies from it. Diligent attendance upon Elijah, particularly in his last hours, would be proper means for Elisha to obtain much of his spirit. The comforts of departing saints, and their experiences, help both to gild our comforts and to strengthen our resolutions. Elijah is carried to heaven in a fiery chariot. Many questions might be asked about this, which could not be answered. Let it suffice that we are told, what his Lord, when he came, found him doing. He was engaged in serious discourse, encouraging and directing Elisha about the kingdom of God among men. We mistake, if we think preparation for heaven is carried on only by contemplation and acts of devotion. The chariot and horses appeared like fire, something very glorious, not for burning, but brightness. By the manner in which Elijah and Enoch were taken from this world, God gave a glimpse of the eternal life brought to light by the gospel, of the glory reserved for the bodies of the saints, and of the opening of the kingdom of heaven to all believers. It was also a figure of Christ's ascension. Though Elijah was gone triumphantly to heaven, yet this world could ill spare him. Surely their hearts are hard, who feel not, when God, by taking away faithful, useful men, calls for weeping and mourning. Elijah was to Israel, by his counsels, reproofs, and prayers, better than the strongest force of chariot and horse, and kept off the judgments of God. Christ bequeathed to his disciples his precious gospel, like Elijah's mantle; the token of the Divine power being exerted to overturn the empire of Satan, and to set up the kingdom of God in the world. The same gospel remains with us, though the miraculous powers are withdrawn, and it has Divine strength for the conversion and salvation of sinners.

Nevertheless he, doubtless by the secret directions of the Spirit, proposed to Elisha a sign, the observation of which would keep him in the attitude of an anxious waiter, as well as suppliant for the favor.

Elisha took it up, not as a sacred relic to be worshipped, but as a significant garment to be worn. Now that Elijah was taken to heaven, Elisha inquired, 1. After God; when our creature-comforts are removed, we have a God to go to, who lives for ever. 2. After the God that Elijah served, and honoured, and pleaded for. The Lord God of the holy prophets is the same yesterday, to-day, and for ever; but what will it avail us to have the mantles of those that are gone, their places, their books, if we have not their spirit, their God? See Elisha's dividing the river; God's people need not fear at last passing through the Jordan of death as on dry ground. The sons of the prophets made a needless search for Elijah. Wise men may yield to that, for the sake of peace, and the good opinion of others, which yet their judgment is against, as needless and fruitless. Traversing hills and valleys will never bring us to Elijah, but following the example of his holy faith and zeal will, in due time.
【왕하2:14 JFB】14-18. smote the waters—The waving of the mantle on the river, and the miraculous division of the waters consequent upon it, was an evidence that the Lord God of Elijah was with him, and as this miracle was witnessed by the scholars of the prophets from Jericho, they forthwith recognized the pre-eminence of Elisha, as now the prophet of Israel.
【왕하2:16 JFB】16-18. fifty strong men, let them go, we pray thee, and seek thy master—Though the young prophets from Jericho had seen Elijah's miraculous passage of the Jordan, they had not witnessed the ascension. They imagined that he might have been cast by the whirlwind on some mountain or valley; or, if he had actually been admitted into heaven, they expected that his body would still be remaining somewhere on earth. In compliance with their importunity, he gave them permission, but told them what the result would be.

【왕하2:19 MHCC】Observe the miracle of healing the waters. Prophets should make every place to which they come better for them, endeavouring to sweeten bitter spirits, and to make barren souls fruitful, by the word of God, which is like the salt cast into the water by Elisha. It was an apt emblem of the effect produced by the grace of God on the sinful heart of man. Whole families, towns, and cities, sometimes have a new appearance through the preaching of the gospel; wickedness and evil have been changed into fruitfulness in the works of righteousness, which are, through Christ, to the praise and glory of God. Here is a curse on the youths of Bethel, enough to destroy them; it was not a curse causeless, for it was Elisha's character, as God's prophet, that they abused. They bade him “go up,” reflecting on the taking up of Elijah into heaven. The prophet acted by Divine impulse. If the Holy Spirit had not directed Elisha's solemn curse, the providence of God would not have followed it with judgment. The Lord must be glorified as a righteous God who hates sin, and will reckon for it. Let young persons be afraid of speaking wicked words, for God notices what they say. Let them not mock at any for defects in mind or body; especially it is at their peril, if they scoff at any for well doing. Let parents that would have comfort in their children, train them up well, and do their utmost betimes to drive out the foolishness that is bound up in their hearts. And what will be the anguish of those parents, at the day of judgment, who witness the everlasting condemnation of their offspring, occasioned by their own bad example, carelessness, or wicked teaching!

Bring me a new cruse, and put salt therein—The noxious qualities of the water could not be corrected by the infusion of salt—for, supposing the salt was possessed of such a property, a whole spring could not be purified by a dishful for a day, much less in all future time. The pouring in of the salt was a symbolic act with which Elisha accompanied the word of the Lord, by which the spring was healed [Keil].
【왕하2:23 JFB】23, 24. there came forth little children out of the city—that is, the idolatrous, or infidel young men of the place, who affecting to disbelieve the report of his master's translation, sarcastically urged him to follow in the glorious career.
bald head—an epithet of contempt in the East, applied to a person even with a bushy head of hair. The appalling judgment that befell them was God's interference to uphold his newly invested prophet.
