■ 예레미야 6장

1. 베냐민 자손들아 예루살렘 중에서 피난하라 드고아에서 나팔을 불고 벧학게렘에서 기호를 들라 재앙과 큰 파멸이 북방에서 엿보아 옴이니라

  O ye children of Benjamin , gather yourselves to flee out of the midst of Jerusalem , and blow the trumpet in Tekoa , and set up a sign of fire in Beth–haccerem : for evil appeareth out of the north , and great destruction .

  I have likened the daughter of Zion to a comely and delicate woman.

  The shepherds with their flocks shall come unto her; they shall pitch their tents against her round about ; they shall feed every one in his place .

 

4. 너희는 그를 치기를 준비하라 일어나라 우리가 정오에 올라가자 아하 아깝다 날이 기울어 저녁볕 그늘이 길었구나

  Prepare ye war against her; arise , and let us go up at noon . Woe unto us! for the day goeth away , for the shadows of the evening are stretched out .

 

5. 일어나라 우리가 밤으로 올라가서 그 전각들을 헐자 하도다

  Arise , and let us go by night , and let us destroy her palaces .

 

6. 나 만군의 여호와가 이같이 말하노라 너희는 나무를 베어서 예루살렘을 향하여 흉벽을 쌓으라 이는 벌 받을 성이라 그 중에는 오직 포학한 것뿐이니라

  For thus hath the Lord of hosts said , Hew ye down trees , and cast a mount against Jerusalem : this is the city to be visited ; she is wholly oppression in the midst of her.

 

7. 샘이 그 물을 솟쳐냄 같이 그가 그 악을 발하니 강포와 탈취가 거기서 들리며 질병과 창상이 내 앞에 계속하느니라

  As a fountain casteth out her waters , so she casteth out her wickedness : violence and spoil is heard in her; before me continually is grief and wounds .

 

8. 예루살렘아 너는 훈계를 받으라 그리하지 아니하면 내 마음이 너를 싫어하고 너로 황무케 하여 거민이 없는 땅을 만들리라

  Be thou instructed , O Jerusalem , lest my soul depart from thee; lest I make thee desolate , a land not inhabited .

 

9. 만군의 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하시되 포도를 땀 같이 그들이 이스라엘의 남은 자를 말갛게 주우리라 너는 포도 따는 자처럼 네 손을 광주리에 자주자주 놀리라 하시나니

  Thus saith the Lord of hosts , They shall throughly glean the remnant of Israel as a vine : turn back thine hand as a grapegatherer into the baskets .

 

10. 내가 누구에게 말하며 누구에게 경책하여 듣게 할꼬 보라 그 귀가 할례를 받지 못하였으므로 듣지 못하는도다 보라 여호와의 말씀을 그들이 자기에게 욕으로 여기고 이를 즐겨 아니하니

  To whom shall I speak , and give warning , that they may hear ? behold, their ear is uncircumcised , and they cannot hearken : behold, the word of the Lord is unto them a reproach ; they have no delight in it.

 

11. 그러므로 여호와의 분노가 내게 가득하여 참기 어렵도다 그것을 거리에 있는 아이들과 모인 청년들에게 부으리니 지아비와 지어미와 노인과 늙은이가 다 잡히리로다

  Therefore I am full of the fury of the Lord ; I am weary with holding in : I will pour it out upon the children abroad , and upon the assembly of young men together : for even the husband with the wife shall be taken , the aged with him that is full of days .

 

12. 여호와께서 말씀하시되 내가 그 땅 거민에게 내 손을 펼 것인즉 그들의 집과 전지와 아내가 타인의 소유로 이전되리니

  And their houses shall be turned unto others , with their fields and wives together : for I will stretch out my hand upon the inhabitants of the land , saith the Lord .

 

13. 이는 그들이 가장 작은 자로부터 큰 자까지 다 탐남하며 선지자로부터 제사장까지 다 거짓을 행함이라

  For from the least of them even unto the greatest of them every one is given to covetousness ; and from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely .

 

14. 그들이 내 백성의 상처를 심상히 고쳐 주며 말하기를 평강하다 평강하다 하나 평강이 없도다

  They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly , saying , Peace , peace ; when there is no peace .

 

15. 그들이 가증한 일을 행할 때에 부끄러워하였느냐 아니라 조금도 부끄러워 아니할뿐 아니라 얼굴도 붉어지지 않았느니라 그러므로 그들이 엎드러지는 자와 함께 엎드러질 것이라 내가 그들을 벌하리니 그 때에 그들이 거꾸러지리라 여호와의 말이니라

  Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination ? nay , they were not at all ashamed , neither could they blush : therefore they shall fall among them that fall : at the time that I visit them they shall be cast down , saith the Lord .

 

16. 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하시되 너희는 길에 서서 보며 옛적 길 곧 선한 길이 어디인지 알아보고 그리로 행하라 너희 심령이 평강을 얻으리라 하나 그들의 대답이 우리는 그리로 행치 않겠노라 하였으며

  Thus saith the Lord , Stand ye in the ways , and see , and ask for the old paths , where is the good way , and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls . But they said , We will not walk therein.

 

17. 내가 또 너희 위에 파수꾼을 세웠으니 나팔소리를 들으라 하나 그들의 대답이 우리는 듣지 않겠노라 하였도다

  Also I set watchmen over you, saying, Hearken to the sound of the trumpet . But they said , We will not hearken .

 

18. 그러므로 너희 열방아 들으라 회중아 그들의 당할 일을 알라

  Therefore hear , ye nations , and know , O congregation , what is among them.

 

19. 땅이여 들으라 내가 이 백성에게 재앙을 내리리니 이것이 그들의 생각의 결과라 그들이 내 말을 듣지 아니하며 내 법을 버렸음이니라

  Hear , O earth : behold, I will bring evil upon this people , even the fruit of their thoughts , because they have not hearkened unto my words , nor to my law , but rejected it.

 

20. 시바에서 유향과 원방에서 향품을 내게로 가져옴은 어찜이뇨 나는 그들의 번제를 받지 아니하며 그들의 희생을 달게 여기지 않노라

  To what purpose cometh there to me incense from Sheba , and the sweet cane from a far country ? your burnt offerings are not acceptable , nor your sacrifices sweet unto me.

 

21. 그러므로 나 여호와가 이같이 말하노라 보라 내가 이 백성 앞에 거침을 두리니 아비와 아들들이 한 가지로 거기 거치며 이웃과 그 친구가 함께 멸망하리라

  Therefore thus saith the Lord , Behold, I will lay stumblingblocks before this people , and the fathers and the sons together shall fall upon them; the neighbour and his friend shall perish .

 

22. 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하시되 보라 한 민족이 북방에서 오며 큰 나라가 땅 끝에서부터 떨쳐 일어나나니

  Thus saith the Lord , Behold, a people cometh from the north country , and a great nation shall be raised from the sides of the earth .

 

23. 그들은 활과 창을 잡았고 잔인하여 자비가 없으며 그 목소리는 바다가 흉용함 같은 자라 그들이 말을 타고 전사 같이 다 항오를 벌이고 딸 시온 너를 치려하느니라 하시도다

  They shall lay hold on bow and spear ; they are cruel , and have no mercy ; their voice roareth like the sea ; and they ride upon horses , set in array as men for war against thee, O daughter of Zion .

 

24. 우리가 그 소문을 들었으므로 손이 약하여졌고 고통이 우리를 잡았으므로 아픔이 해산하는 여인 같도다

  We have heard the fame thereof: our hands wax feeble : anguish hath taken hold of us, and pain , as of a woman in travail .

 

25. 너희는 밭에도 나가지 말라 길로도 행치 말라 대적의 칼이 있고 사방에 두려움이 있음이니라

  Go not forth into the field , nor walk by the way ; for the sword of the enemy and fear is on every side .

 

26. 딸 내 백성이 굵은 베를 두르고 재에서 굴며 독자를 잃음 같이 슬퍼하며 통곡할지어다 멸망시킬 자가 홀연히 우리에게 올 것임이니라

  O daughter of my people , gird thee with sackcloth , and wallow thyself in ashes : make thee mourning , as for an only son , most bitter lamentation : for the spoiler shall suddenly come upon us.

 

27. 주께서 가라사대 내가 이미 너로 내 백성 중에 살피는 자와 요새를 삼아 그들의 길을 알고 살피게 하였노라

  I have set thee for a tower and a fortress among my people , that thou mayest know and try their way .

 

28. 그들은 다 심히 패역한 자며 다니며 비방하는 자며 그들은 놋과 철이며 다 사악한 자라

  They are all grievous revolters , walking with slanders : they are brass and iron ; they are all corrupters .

 

29. 풀무를 맹렬히 불면 그 불에 납이 살라져서 단련하는 자의 일이 헛되게 되느니라 이와 같이 악한 자가 제하여지지 아니하나니

  The bellows are burned , the lead is consumed of the fire ; the founder melteth in vain : for the wicked are not plucked away .

 

30. 사람들이 그들을 내어버린 은이라 칭하게 될 것은 나 여호와가 그들을 버렸음이니라

  Reprobate silver shall men call them, because the Lord hath rejected them.

【렘6:1 JFB】렘6:1-30. Zion's Foes Prepare War against Her: Her Sins Are the Cause.
1. Benjamin—Jerusalem was situated in the tribe of Benjamin, which was here separated from that of Judah by the valley of Hinnom. Though it was inhabited partly by Benjamites, partly by men of Judah, he addresses the former as being his own countrymen.
blow … trumpet … Tekoa—Tikehu, Tekoa form a play on sounds. The birthplace of Amos.
Beth-haccerem—meaning in Hebrew, "vineyard-house." It and Tekoa were a few miles south of Jerusalem. As the enemy came from the north, the inhabitants of the surrounding country would naturally flee southwards. The fire-signal on the hills gave warning of danger approaching.

 

【렘6:1 CWC】[PERSECUTED IN HIS HOME TOWN]
The length of this lesson may alarm, but preparation for it only requires the reading of the chapters two or three times. One who has gone through Isaiah will soon catch the drift of the Spirit's teaching and be able to break up the chapters into separate discourses and the discourses into their various themes. The main object of the lesson is to dwell on the prophet's personal experience in his home town which is reached in the closing chapters.
It is thought that the discourses in this section were delivered prior to the finding of the law-book in 2 Kings, which explains their more moderate tone as compared with the later ones, but this is a feature not relevant to this work.
Note in chapter 2 the divine expostulation (vv. 1-13); the reminder of the divine goodness (vv. 14-22); the vain excuses made by the nation (vv. 23-28); and the lamentation of the Lord over its condition (v. 29-3:5).
In chapter 3, beginning afresh at verse 6, we have God's complaint against Judah for learning nothing from "her treacherous sister," i. e., from Israel's experience (vv. 6-11); this is followed by a plea to that same Israel (now scattered through the north country by Assyria), to return if she would, and mercy would be shown her. In this connection the promise for the future is set before her (vv. 12-17); Judah and Israel will be re-united then, and so on to chapter 4:1-2.
Chapter 4 and the following, indicate that a mere outward reformation is not sufficient to bring divine blessing. Judgment is coming from the north! "A lion out of his thicket!" "A stormwind!" The prophet laments.
In chapter 7 there is a call to repentance and a spiritual religion. In chapters 8 and 9 coming judgment is again announced.
The Treachery of Friends.
Coming to chapter 11:18, we see the beginnings of the persecution that farther on became so bitter against the prophet as to make him a striking type of the suffering Saviour. It takes its rise among his neighbors and kinfolk in Anathoth. At first he is unsuspicious, but God reveals the plot to him. They would kill him, destroying the tree to be rid of the fruit. He appeals to God, whose answer is in the closing verses of the chapter. Anathoth was to suffer, but not immediately.
In chapter 12 the prophet expresses his surprise at this in the spirit of Job, and that of Psalms 37 and 73. The divine comfort he receives is to be told that worse things will follow. His friend Josiah is now on the throne, but wait till he is gone and Jehoiakim and Zedekiah reign! Tie is now like a man running a race with men, but then it will be like running a race with horses! He is dwelling in a land of comparative peace now, but then he will be in "the swellings of Jordan."
To understand this keep the politics of the period in mind. Judah is turning to Egypt for help against Babylon, the Gentile nation now in great power. But the divine purpose is that she shall submit herself to the yoke of Babylon. The prophet is proclaiming this against a strong party in the nation that will not have it so. They consider him a pessimist, a traitor to his country who must be silenced. And silenced he would have been if it were not for God.

렘6:1-8 Whatever methods are used, it is vain to contend with God's judgments. The more we indulge in the pleasures of this life, the more we unfit ourselves for the troubles of this life. The Chaldean army shall break in upon the land of Judah, and in a little time devour all. The day is coming, when those careless and secure in sinful ways will be visited. It is folly to trifle when we have eternal salvation to work out, and the enemies of that salvation to fight against. But they were thus eager, not that they might fulfil God's counsels, but that they might fill their own treasures; yet God thereby served his own purposes. The corrupt heart of man, in its natural state, casts out evil thoughts, just as a fountain casts out her waters. It is always flowing, yet always full. The God of mercy is loth to depart even from a provoking people, and is earnest with them, that by repentance and reformation, they may prevent things from coming to extremity.
 
렘6:9-17 When the Lord arises to take vengeance, no sinners of any age or rank, or of either sex escape. They were set upon the world, and wholly carried away by the love of it. If we judge of this sin by God's word, we find multitudes in every station and rank given up to it. Those are to be reckoned our worst and most dangerous enemies, who flatter us in a sinful way. Oh that men would be wise for their souls! Ask for the old paths; the way of godliness and righteousness has always been the way God has owned and blessed. Ask for the old paths set forth by the written word of God. When you have found the good way, go on in it, you will find abundant recompence at your journey's end. But if men will not obey the voice of God and flee to his appointed Refuge, it will plainly appear at the day of judgment, that they are ruined because they reject God's word.
 
렘6:18-30 God rejects their outward services, as worthless to atone for their sins. Sacrifice and incense were to direct them to a Mediator; but when offered to purchase a license to go on in sin, they provoke God. The sins of God's professing people make them an easy prey to their enemies. They dare not show themselves. Saints may rejoice in hope of God's mercies, though they see them only in the promise: sinners must mourn for fear of God's judgments, though they see them only in the threatenings. They are the worst of revolters, and are all corrupters. Sinners soon become tempters. They are compared to ore supposed to have good metal in it, but which proves all dross. Nothing will prevail to part between them and their sins. Reprobate silver shall they be called, useless and worthless. When warnings, corrections, rebukes, and all means of grace, leave men unrenewed, they will be left, as rejected of God, to everlasting misery. Let us pray, then, that we may be refined by the Lord, as silver is refined.

feed—They shall consume each one all that is near him; literally, "his hand," that is, the place which he occupies (민2:17; see on 사56:5).

 

【렘6:4 JFB】4, 5. The invading soldiers encourage one another to the attack on Jerusalem.
Prepare—literally, "Sanctify" war, that is, Proclaim it formally with solemn rites; the invasion was solemnly ordered by God (compare 사13:3).
at noon—the hottest part of the day when attacks were rarely made (렘15:8; 20:16). Even at this time they wished to attack, such is their eagerness.
Woe unto us—The words of the invaders, mourning the approach of night which would suspend their hostile operations; still, even in spite of the darkness, at night they renew the attack (렘6:5).

 

【렘6:6 JFB】6. cast—Hebrew, "pour out"; referring to the emptying of the baskets of earth to make the mound, formed of "trees" and earthwork, to overtop the city walls. The "trees" were also used to make warlike engines.
this—pointing the invaders to Jerusalem.
visited—that is, punished.
wholly oppression—or join "wholly" with "visited," that is, she is altogether (in her whole extent) to be punished [Maurer].

casteth out—causeth to flow; literally, "causeth to dig," the cause being put for the effect (왕하21:16, 24; 사57:20).

depart—Hebrew, "be torn away"; Jehovah's affection making Him unwilling to depart; His attachment to Jerusalem was such that an effort was needed to tear Himself from it (겔23:18; 호9:12; 11:8).

 

【렘6:9 JFB】9. The Jews are the grapes, their enemies the unsparing gleaners.
turn back … hand—again and again bring freshly gathered handfuls to the baskets; referring to the repeated carrying away of captives to Babylon (렘52:28-30; 왕하24:14; 25:11).

Maurer translates, "They shall be put to shame, for they commit abomination; nay (the prophet correcting himself), there is no shame in them" (렘3:3; 8:12; 겔3:7; 습3:5).
them that fall—They shall fall with the rest of their people who are doomed to fall, that is, I will now cease from words; I will execute vengeance [Calvin].

 

【렘6:16 JFB】16. Image from travellers who have lost their road, stopping and inquiring which is the right way on which they once had been, but from which they have wandered.
old paths—Idolatry and apostasy are the modern way; the worship of God the old way. Evil is not coeval with good, but a modern degeneracy from good. The forsaking of God is not, in a true sense, a "way cast up" at all (렘18:15; 시139:24; 말4:4).
rest—(사28:12; 마11:29).

 

【렘6:17 JFB】17. watchmen—prophets, whose duty it was to announce impending calamities, so as to lead the people to repentance (사21:11; 58:1; 겔3:17; 합2:1).

 

【렘6:18 JFB】18. congregation—parallel to "nations"; it therefore means the gathered peoples who are invited to be witnesses as to how great is the perversity of the Israelites (렘6:16, 17), and that they deserve the severe punishment about to be inflicted on them (렘6:19).
what is among them—what deeds are committed by the Israelites (렘6:16, 17) [Maurer]. Or, "what punishments are about to be inflicted on them" [Calvin].

 

【렘6:20 JFB】20. Literally, "To what purpose is this to Me, that incense cometh to Me?"
incense … cane—(사43:24; 60:6). No external services are accepted by God without obedience of the heart and life (렘7:21; 시50:7-9; 사1:11; 미6:6, &c.).
sweet … sweet—antithesis. Your sweet cane is not sweet to Me. The calamus.

 

【렘6:21 JFB】21. stumbling-blocks—instruments of the Jews' ruin (compare 마21:44; 사8:14; 벧전2:8). God Himself ("I") lays them before the reprobate (시69:22; 롬1:28; 11:9).
fathers … sons … neighbour … friend—indiscriminate ruin.

 

【렘6:22 JFB】22. north … sides of the earth—The ancients were little acquainted with the north; therefore it is called the remotest regions (as the Hebrew for "sides" ought to be translated, see on 사14:13) of the earth. The Chaldees are meant (렘1:15; 5:15). It is striking that the very same calamities which the Chaldeans had inflicted on Zion are threatened as the retribution to be dealt in turn to themselves by Jehovah (렘50:41-43).

 

【렘6:23 JFB】23. like the sea—(사5:30).
as men for war—not that they were like warriors, for they were warriors; but "arrayed most perfectly as warriors" [Maurer].

 

【렘6:24 JFB】24. fame thereof—the report of them.

 

【렘6:25 JFB】25. He addresses "the daughter of Zion" (렘6:23); caution to the citizens of Jerusalem not to expose themselves to the enemy by going outside of the city walls.
sword of the enemy—literally, "there is a sword to the enemy"; the enemy hath a sword.

 

【렘6:26 JFB】26. wallow … in ashes—(렘25:34; 미1:10). As they usually in mourning only "cast ashes on the head," wallowing in them means something more, namely, so entirely to cover one's self with ashes as to be like one who had rolled in them (겔27:30).
as for an only son—(암8:10; Z전12:10).
lamentation—literally, "lamentation expressed by beating the breast."

 

【렘6:27 JFB】27. tower … fortress—(렘1:18), rather, "an assayer (and) explorer." By a metaphor from metallurgy in 렘6:27-30, Jehovah, in conclusion, confirms the prophet in his office, and the latter sums up the description of the reprobate people on whom he had to work. The Hebrew for "assayer" (English Version, "tower") is from a root "to try" metals. "Explorer" (English Version, "fortress") is from an Arabic root, "keen-sighted"; or a Hebrew root, "cutting," that is, separating the metal from the dross [Ewald]. Gesenius translates as English Version, "fortress," which does not accord with the previous "assayer."

 

【렘6:28 JFB】28. grievous revolters—literally, "contumacious of the contumacious," that is, most contumacious, the Hebrew mode of expressing a superlative. So "the strong among the mighty," that is, the strongest (겔32:21). See 렘5:23; 호4:16.
walking with slanders—(렘9:4). "Going about for the purpose of slandering" [Maurer].
brass, &c.—that is, copper. It and "iron" being the baser and harder metals express the debased and obdurate character of the Jews (사48:4; 60:17).

 

【렘6:29 JFB】29. bellows … burned—So intense a heat is made that the very bellows are almost set on fire. Rosenmuller translates not so well from a Hebrew root, "pant" or "snort," referring to the sound of the bellows blown hard.
lead—employed to separate the baser metal from the silver, as quicksilver is now used. In other words, the utmost pains have been used to purify Israel in the furnace of affliction, but in vain (렘5:3; 벧전1:7).
consumed of the fire—In the Chetib, or Hebrew text, the "consumed" is supplied out of the previous "burned." Translating as Rosenmuller, "pant," this will be inadmissible; and the Keri (Hebrew Margin) division of the Hebrew words will have to be read, to get "is consumed of the fire." This is an argument for the translation, "are burned."
founder—the refiner.
wicked … not plucked away—answering to the dross which has no good metal to be separated, the mass being all dross.
