■ 사도행전 22장

1. 부형들아 내가 지금 너희 앞에서 변명하는 말을 들으라 하더라

  Men , brethren , and fathers , hear ye my defence which I make now unto you .

 

2. 저희가 그 히브리 방언으로 말함을 듣고 더욱 종용한지라 이어 가로되

  (And when they heard that he spake in the Hebrew tongue to them , they kept the more silence : and he saith ,)

 

3. 나는 유대인으로 길리기아 다소에서 났고 이 성에서 자라 가말리엘의 문하에서 우리 조상들의 율법의 엄한 교훈을 받았고 오늘 너희 모든 사람처럼 하나님께 대하여 열심하는 자라

  I am verily a man which am a Jew , born in Tarsus , a city in Cilicia , yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel , and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers , and was zealous toward God , as ye all are this day .

 

4. 내가 이 도를 핍박하여 사람을 죽이기까지 하고 남녀를 결박하여 옥에 넘겼노니

  And I persecuted this way unto the death , binding and delivering into prisons both men and women .

 

5. 이에 대제사장과 모든 장로들이 내 증인이라 또 내가 저희에게서 다메섹 형제들에게 가는 공문을 받아 가지고 거기 있는 자들도 결박하여 예루살렘으로 끌어다가 형벌 받게 하려고 가더니

  As also the high priest doth bear me witness , and all the estate of the elders : from whom also I received letters unto the brethren , and went to Damascus , to bring them which were there bound unto Jerusalem , for to be punished .

 

6. 가는데 다메섹에 가까웠을 때에 오정쯤 되어 홀연히 하늘로서 큰 빛이 나를 둘러 비취매

  And it came to pass, that , as I made my journey , and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon , suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me .

 

7. 내가 땅에 엎드러져 들으니 소리 있어 가로되 사울아 사울아 네가 왜 나를 핍박하느냐 하시거늘

  And I fell unto the ground , and heard a voice saying unto me , Saul , Saul , why persecutest thou me ?

 

8. 내가 대답하되 주여 뉘시니이까 하니 가라사대 나는 네가 핍박하는 나사렛 예수라 하시더라

  And I answered , Who art thou , Lord ? And he said unto me , I am Jesus of Nazareth , whom thou persecutest .

 

9. 나와 함께 있는 사람들이 빛은 보면서도 나더러 말하시는 이의 소리는 듣지 못하더라

  And they that were with me saw indeed the light , and were afraid ; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me .

 

10. 내가 가로되 주여 무엇을 하리이까 주께서 가라사대 일어나 다메섹으로 들어가라 정한 바 너희 모든 행할 것을 거기서 누가 이르리라 하시거늘

  And I said , What shall I do , Lord ? And the Lord said unto me , Arise , and go into Damascus ; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do .

 

11. 나는 그 빛의 광채를 인하여 볼 수 없게 되었으므로 나와 함께 있는 사람들의 손에 끌려 다메섹에 들어갔노라

  And when I could not see for the glory of that light , being led by the hand of them that were with me , I came into Damascus .

 

12. 율법에 의하면 경건한 사람으로 거기 사는 모든 유대인들에게 칭찬을 듣는 아나니아라 하는 이가

  And one Ananias , a devout man according to the law , having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there,

 

13. 내게 와 곁에 서서 말하되 형제 사울아 다시 보라 하거늘 즉시 그를 쳐다보았노라

  Came unto me , and stood , and said unto me , Brother Saul , receive thy sight . And the same hour I looked up upon him .

 

14. 그가 또 가로되 우리 조상들의 하나님이 너를 택하여 너로 하여금 자기 뜻을 알게 하시며 저 의인을 보게 하시고 그 입에서 나오는 음성을 듣게 하셨으니

  And he said , The God of our fathers hath chosen thee , that thou shouldest know his will , and see that Just One , and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth .

 

15. 네가 그를 위하여 모든 사람 앞에서 너의 보고 들은 것에 증인이 되리라

  For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard .

 

16. 이제는 왜 주저하느뇨 일어나 주의 이름을 불러 침례를 받고 너의 죄를 씻으라 하더라

  And now why tarriest thou ? arise , and be baptized , and wash away thy sins , calling on the name of the Lord .

 

17. 후에 내가 예루살렘으로 돌아와서 성전에서 기도할 때에 비몽사몽간에

  And it came to pass, that , when I was come again to Jerusalem , even while I prayed in the temple , I was in a trance ;

 

18. 보매 주께서 내게 말씀하시되 속히 예루살렘에서 나가라 저희는 네가 내게 대하여 증거하는 말을 듣지 아니하리라 하시거늘

  And saw him saying unto me , Make haste , and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem : for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me .

 

19. 내가 말하기를 주여 내가 주 믿는 사람들을 가두고 또 각 회당에서 때리고

  And I said , Lord , they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee :

 

20. 또 주의 증인 스데반의 피를 흘릴 적에 내가 곁에 서서 찬성하고 그 죽이는 사람들의 옷을 지킨 줄 저희도 아나이다

  And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed , I also was standing by , and consenting unto his death , and kept the raiment of them that slew him .

 

21. 나더러 또 이르시되 떠나가라 내가 너를 멀리 이방인에게로 보내리라 하셨느니라

  And he said unto me , Depart : for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles .

 

22. 이 말 하는 것까지 저희가 듣다가 소리질러 가로되 이러한 놈은 세상에서 없이 하자 살려둘 자가 아니라 하여

  And they gave him audience unto this word , and then lifted up their voices , and said , Away with such a fellow from the earth : for it is not fit that he should live .

 

23. 떠들며 옷을 벗어 던지고 티끌을 공중에 날리니

  And as they cried out , and cast off their clothes , and threw dust into the air ,

 

24. 천부장이 바울을 영문 안으로 데려가라 명하고 저희가 무슨 일로 그를 대하여 떠드나 알고자 하여 채찍질하며 신문하라 한대

  The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle , and bade that he should be examined by scourging ; that he might know wherefore they cried so against him .

 

25. 가죽줄로 바울을 매니 바울이 곁에 섰는 백부장더러 이르되 너희가 로마 사람 된 자를 죄도 정치 아니하고 채찍질할 수 있느냐 하니

  And as they bound him with thongs , Paul said unto the centurion that stood by , Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman , and uncondemned ?

 

26. 백부장이 듣고 가서 천부장에게 전하여 가로되 어찌하려 하느뇨 이는 로마 사람이라 하니

  When the centurion heard that, he went and told the chief captain , saying , Take heed what thou doest : for this man is a Roman .

 

27. 천부장이 와서 바울에게 말하되 네가 로마 사람이냐 내게 말하라 가로되 그러하다

  Then the chief captain came , and said unto him , Tell me , art thou a Roman ? He said , Yea .

 

28. 천부장이 대답하되 나는 돈을 많이 들여 이 시민권을 얻었노라 바울이 가로되 나는 나면서부터로라 하니

  And the chief captain answered , With a great sum obtained I this freedom . And Paul said , But I was free born .

 

29. 신문하려던 사람들이 곧 그에게서 물러가고 천부장도 그가 로마 사람인 줄 알고 또는 그 결박한 것을 인하여 두려워하니라

  Then straightway they departed from him which should have examined him : and the chief captain also was afraid , after he knew that he was a Roman , and because he had bound him .

 

30. 이튿날 천부장이 무슨 일로 유대인들이 그를 송사하는지 실상을 알고자 하여 그 결박을 풀고 명하여 제사장들과 온 공회를 모으고 바울을 데리고 내려가서 저희 앞에 세우니라

  On the morrow , because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews , he loosed him from his bands , and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear , and brought Paul down , and set him before them .

【행22:1 JFB】행22:1-30. Paul's Defense from the Stairs of the Fortress—The Rage of the Audience Bursting Forth, the Commandant Has Him Brought into the Fort to Be Examined by Scourging, but Learning that He Is aRoman, He Orders His Release and Commands the Sanhedrin to Try Him.

 

【행22:1 MHCC】The apostle addressed the enraged multitude, in the customary style of respect and good-will. Paul relates the history of his early life very particularly; he notices that his conversion was wholly the act of God. Condemned sinners are struck blind by the power of darkness, and it is a lasting blindness, like that of the unbelieving Jews. Convinced sinners are struck blind as Paul was, not by darkness, but by light. They are for a time brought to be at a loss within themselves, but it is in order to their being enlightened. A simple relation of the Lord's dealings with us, in bringing us, from opposing, to profess and promote his gospel, when delivered in a right spirit and manner, will sometimes make more impression that laboured speeches, even though it amounts not to the full proof of the truth, such as was shown in the change wrought in the apostle.

they kept the more silence—They could have understood him in Greek, and doubtless fully expected the renegade to address them in that language, but the sound of their holy mother tongue awed them into deeper silence.

of Gamaliel—(See on 행5:34); a fact of great importance in the apostle's history, standing in the same relation to his future career as Moses' education in the Egyptian court to the work for which he was destined.

toward God as ye all are this day—his own former murderous zeal against the disciples of the Lord Jesus being merely reflected in their present treatment of himself.

【행22:12 JFB】12. Ananias, a devout man, according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there—One would not know from this description of Ananias that he was a Christian at all, the apostles object being to hold him up as unexceptionable, even to the most rigid Jews.

 

【행22:12 MHCC】The apostle goes on to relate how he was confirmed in the change he had made. The Lord having chosen the sinner, that he should know his will, he is humbled, enlightened, and brought to the knowledge of Christ and his blessed gospel. Christ is here called that Just One; for he is Jesus Christ the righteous. Those whom God has chosen to know his will, must look to Jesus, for by him God has made known his good-will to us. The great gospel privilege, sealed to us by baptism, is the pardon of sins. Be baptized, and wash away thy sins; that is, receive the comfort of the pardon of thy sins in and through Jesus Christ, and lay hold on his righteousness for that purpose; and receive power against sin, for the mortifying of thy corruptions. Be baptized, and rest not in the sign, but make sure of the thing signified, the putting away of the filth of sin. The great gospel duty, to which by our baptism we are bound, is, to seek for the pardon of our sins in Christ's name, and in dependence on him and his righteousness. God appoints his labourers their day and their place, and it is fit they should follow his appointment, though it may cross their own will. Providence contrives better for us than we do for ourselves; we must refer ourselves to God's guidance. If Christ send any one, his Spirit shall go along with him, and give him to see the fruit of his labours. But nothing can reconcile man's heart to the gospel, except the special grace of God.

when I was come again to Jerusalem—on the occasion mentioned in 행9:26-29.
while I prayed in the temple—He thus calls their attention to the fact that after his conversion he kept up his connection with the temple as before.

【행22:21 JFB】21. depart for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles—that is, "Enough; thy testimony is not to be thrown away upon Jerusalem; the Gentiles, afar off, are thy peculiar sphere."

 

【행22:22 JFB】22, 23. gave him audience to this word … then … Away with such a fellow from the earth, &c.—Their national prejudices lashed into fury at the mention of a mission to the Gentiles, they would speedily have done to him as they did to Stephen, but for the presence and protection of the Roman officer.

 

【행22:22 MHCC】The Jews listened to Paul's account of his conversion, but the mention of his being sent to the Gentiles, was so contrary to all their national prejudices, that they would hear no more. Their frantic conduct astonished the Roman officer, who supposed that Paul must have committed some great crime. Paul pleaded his privilege as a Roman citizen, by which he was exempted from all trials and punishments which might force him to confess himself guilty. The manner of his speaking plainly shows what holy security and serenity of mind he enjoyed. As Paul was a Jew, in low circumstances, the Roman officer questioned how he obtained so valuable a distinction; but the apostle told him he was free born. Let us value that freedom to which all the children of God are born; which no sum of money, however large, can purchase for those who remain unregenerate. This at once put a stop to his trouble. Thus many are kept from evil practices by the fear of man, who would not be held back from them by the fear of God. The apostle asks, simply, Is it lawful? He knew that the God whom he served would support him under all sufferings for his name's sake. But if it were not lawful, the apostle's religion directed him, if possible, to avoid it. He never shrunk from a cross which his Divine Master laid upon his onward road; and he never stept aside out of that road to take one up.

that he might know wherefore they cried so—Paul's speech being to him in an unknown tongue, he concluded from the horror which it kindled in the vast audience that he must have been guilty of some crime.

【행22:27 JFB】27-29. art thou a Roman?—showing that this being of Tarsus, which he had told him before (행21:39) did not necessarily imply that he was a Roman citizen.

 

【행22:28 JFB】28. With a great sum obtained I this freedom—Roman citizenship was bought and sold in the reign of Claudius, we know, at a high price: at a subsequent date, for next to nothing. But to put in a false claim to this privilege was a capital crime.
I was free born—born to it, by purchase, or in reward of services, on the part of his father or some ancestor.
