■ 출애굽기 40장
1. 여호와께서 모세에게 일러 가라사대
And the Lord spake unto Moses , saying ,
2. 너는 정월 초일일에 성막 곧 회막을 세우고
On the first day of the first month shalt thou set up the tabernacle of the tent of the congregation .
3. 또 증거궤를 들여 놓고 또 장으로 그 궤를 가리우고
And thou shalt put therein the ark of the testimony , and cover the ark with the vail .
4. 또 상을 들여 놓고 그 위에 물품을 진설하고 등대를 들여 놓고 불을 켜고
And thou shalt bring in the table , and set in order the things that are to be set in order upon it; and thou shalt bring in the candlestick , and light the lamps thereof.
5. 또 금 향단을 증거궤 앞에 두고 성막 문에 장을 달고
And thou shalt set the altar of gold for the incense before the ark of the testimony , and put the hanging of the door to the tabernacle .
6. 또 번제단을 회막의 성막 문 앞에 놓고
And thou shalt set the altar of the burnt offering before the door of the tabernacle of the tent of the congregation .
7. 또 물두멍을 회막과 단 사이에 놓고 그 속에 물을 담고
And thou shalt set the laver between the tent of the congregation and the altar , and shalt put water therein.
8. 또 뜰 주위에 포장을 치고 뜰 문에 장을 달고
And thou shalt set up the court round about , and hang up the hanging at the court gate .
9. 또 관유를 취하여 성막과 그 안에 있는 모든 것에 발라 그것과 그 모든 기구를 거룩하게 하라 그것이 거룩하리라
And thou shalt take the anointing oil , and anoint the tabernacle , and all that is therein, and shalt hallow it, and all the vessels thereof: and it shall be holy .
10. 너는 또 번제단과 그 모든 기구에 발라 그 안을 거룩하게 하라 그 단이 지극히 거룩하리라
And thou shalt anoint the altar of the burnt offering , and all his vessels , and sanctify the altar : and it shall be an altar most holy .
11. 너는 또 물두멍과 그 받침에 발라 거룩하게 하고
And thou shalt anoint the laver and his foot , and sanctify it.
12. 또 아론과 그 아들들을 회막문으로 데려다가 물로 씻기고
And thou shalt bring Aaron and his sons unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation , and wash them with water .
13. 아론에게 거룩한 옷을 입히고 그에게 기름을 부어 거룩하게 하여 그로 내게 제사장의 직분을 행하게 하라
And thou shalt put upon Aaron the holy garments , and anoint him, and sanctify him; that he may minister unto me in the priest’s office .
14. 너는 또 그 아들들을 데려다가 그들에게 겉옷을 입히고
And thou shalt bring his sons , and clothe them with coats :
15. 그 아비에게 기름을 부음 같이 그들에게도 부어서 그들로 내게 제사장 직분을 행하게 하라 그들이 기름 부음을 받았은즉 대대로 영영히 제사장이 되리라 하시매
And thou shalt anoint them, as thou didst anoint their father , that they may minister unto me in the priest’s office : for their anointing shall surely be an everlasting priesthood throughout their generations .
16. 모세가 그같이 행하되 곧 여호와께서 자기에게 명하신 대로 다 행하였더라
Thus did Moses : according to all that the Lord commanded him, so did he.
17. 제 이년 정월 곧 그 달 초일일에 성막을 세우니라
And it came to pass in the first month in the second year , on the first day of the month , that the tabernacle was reared up .
18. 모세가 성막을 세우되 그 받침들을 놓고 그 널판들을 세우고 그 띠를 띠우고 그 기둥들을 세우고
And Moses reared up the tabernacle , and fastened his sockets , and set up the boards thereof, and put in the bars thereof, and reared up his pillars .
19. 또 성막 위에 막을 펴고 그 위에 덮개를 덮으니 여호와께서 모세에게 명하신 대로 되니라
And he spread abroad the tent over the tabernacle , and put the covering of the tent above upon it; as the Lord commanded Moses .
20. 그가 또 증거판을 궤 속에 넣고 채를 궤에 꿰고 속죄소를 궤 위에 두고
And he took and put the testimony into the ark , and set the staves on the ark , and put the mercy seat above upon the ark :
21. 또 그 궤를 성막에 들여 놓고 장을 드리워서 그 증거궤를 가리우니 여호와께서 모세에게 명하신 대로 되니라
And he brought the ark into the tabernacle , and set up the vail of the covering , and covered the ark of the testimony ; as the Lord commanded Moses .
22. 그가 또 회막 안 곧 성막 북편으로 장 밖에 상을 놓고
And he put the table in the tent of the congregation , upon the side of the tabernacle northward , without the vail .
23. 또 여호와 앞 그 상 위에 떡을 진설하니 여호와께서 모세에게 명하신 대로 되니라
And he set the bread in order upon it before the Lord ; as the Lord had commanded Moses .
24. 그가 또 회막 안 곧 성막 남편에 등대를 놓아 상과 대하게 하고
And he put the candlestick in the tent of the congregation , over against the table , on the side of the tabernacle southward .
25. 또 여호와 앞에 등잔에 불을 켜니 여호와께서 모세에게 명하신 대로 되니라
And he lighted the lamps before the Lord ; as the Lord commanded Moses .
26. 그가 또 금 향단을 회막 안 장 앞에 두고
And he put the golden altar in the tent of the congregation before the vail :
27. 그 위에 향기로운 향을 사르니 여호와께서 모세에게 명하신 대로 되니라
And he burnt sweet incense thereon; as the Lord commanded Moses .
28. 그가 또 성막 문에 장을 달고
And he set up the hanging at the door of the tabernacle .
29. 또 회막의 성막 문 앞에 번제단을 두고 번제와 소제를 그 위에 드리니 여호와께서 모세에게 명하신 대로 되니라
And he put the altar of burnt offering by the door of the tabernacle of the tent of the congregation , and offered upon it the burnt offering and the meat offering ; as the Lord commanded Moses .
30. 그가 또 물두멍을 회막과 단 사이에 두고 거기 씻을 물을 담고
And he set the laver between the tent of the congregation and the altar , and put water there, to wash withal.
31. 자기와 아론과 그 아들들이 거기서 수족을 씻되
And Moses and Aaron and his sons washed their hands and their feet thereat:
32. 그들이 회막에 들어갈 때와 단에 가까이 갈 때에 씻었으니 여호와께서 모세에게 명하신 대로 되니라
When they went into the tent of the congregation , and when they came near unto the altar , they washed ; as the Lord commanded Moses .
33. 그가 또 성막과 단 사면 뜰에 포장을 치고 뜰문의 장을 다니라 모세가 이같이 역사를 필하였더라
And he reared up the court round about the tabernacle and the altar , and set up the hanging of the court gate . So Moses finished the work .
34. 그 후에 구름이 회막에 덮이고 여호와의 영광이 성막에 충만하매
Then a cloud covered the tent of the congregation , and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle .
35. 모세가 회막에 들어갈 수 없었으니 이는 구름이 회막 위에 덮이고 여호와의 영광이 성막에 충만함이었으며
And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of the congregation , because the cloud abode thereon, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle .
36. 구름이 성막 위에서 떠오를 때에는 이스라엘 자손이 그 모든 행하는 길에 앞으로 발행하였고
And when the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle , the children of Israel went onward in all their journeys :
37. 구름이 떠오르지 않을 때에는 떠오르는 날까지 발행하지 아니하였으며
But if the cloud were not taken up , then they journeyed not till the day that it was taken up .
38. 낮에는 여호와의 구름이 성막 위에 있고 밤에는 불이 그 구름 가운데 있음을 이스라엘의 온 족속이 그 모든 행하는 길에서 친히 보았더라
For the cloud of the Lord was upon the tabernacle by day , and fire was on it by night , in the sight of all the house of Israel , throughout all their journeys .

【출40:1 JFB】출40:1-38. The Tabernacle Reared and Anointed.
【출40:1 CWC】The closing chapters of this book give in detail the execution of the plan of the Tabernacle previously revealed. In the first we are told of the offerings the people made for the work, in the next four the progress of the building is recorded, and in the last we have the completion and acceptance of the whole on God's part.
Note (1) that an important principle in the gifts was the willingness of those who gave (35:5); (2) the women contributed as well as the men (35:22); (3) their liberality exceeded the necessity (36:5, 6); (4) the sum total was very large (38:24-29), so large, that although the people were laborers in Egypt for the most part, yet they must have had much wealth. We should remember, too, the contribution the Egyptians made to them as they departed.
When was the Tabernacle to be set up (40:1, 2)? How long was this after they had left Egypt (5:17)? in what manner did God set His seal of approval on the work (40:34)? What indicates that the cloud now rested permanently on the Tabernacle (40:36)?
【출40:1 MHCC】When a new year begins, we should seek to serve God better than the year before. In half a year the tabernacle was completed. When the hearts of numbers are earnest in a good cause, much may be done in a short time; and when the commandments of God are continually attended to, as the rule of working, all will be done well. The high-priesthood was in the family of Aaron till Christ came, and in Him, the substance of all these shadows, it continues for ever.

On the first day of the first month—From a careful consideration of the incidents recorded to have happened after the exodus (출12:2; 13:4; 19:1; 20:18; 34:28, &c.), it has been computed that the work of the tabernacle was commenced within six months after that emigration; and consequently, that other six months had been occupied in building it. So long a period spent in preparing the materials of a movable pavilion, it would be difficult to understand, were it not for what we are told of the vast dimensions of the tabernacle, as well as the immense variety of curious and elaborate workmanship which its different articles of furniture required.

【출40:15 JFB】15. anoint them, as thou didst anoint their fathers—The sacred oil was used, but it does not appear that the ceremony was performed exactly in the same manner; for although the anointing oil was sprinkled over the garments both of Aaron and his sons (출29:21; 레8:30), it was not poured over the heads of the latter. This distinction was reserved for the high priest (출29:7; 레8:12; 시133:2).
【출40:16 JFB】16. Thus did Moses: according to all that the Lord commanded him—On his part, the same scrupulous fidelity was shown in conforming to the "pattern" in the disposition of the furniture, as had been displayed by the workmen in the erection of the edifice.
【출40:16 MHCC】When the tabernacle and the furniture of it were prepared, they did not put off rearing it till they came to Canaan; but, in obedience to the will of God, they set it up in the midst of their camp. Those who are unsettled in the world, must not think that this will excuse want of religion; as if it were enough to begin to serve God when they begin to be settled in the world. No; a tabernacle for God is very needful, even in a wilderness, especially as we may be in another world before we come to fix in this. And we may justly fear lest we should deceive ourselves with a form of godliness. The thought that so few entered Canaan, should warn young persons especially, not to put off the care of their souls.

So Moses finished the work—Though it is not expressly recorded in this passage, yet, from what took place on all similar occasions, there is reason to believe that on the inauguration day the people were summoned from their tents—were all drawn up as a vast assemblage, yet in calm and orderly arrangement, around the newly erected tabernacle.
【출40:34 JFB】34. a cloud—literally, "The cloud," the mystic cloud which was the well-known symbol of the Divine Presence. After remaining at a great distance from them on the summit of the mount, it appeared to be in motion; and if many among them had a secret misgiving about the issue, how the fainting heart would revive, the interest of the moment intensely increase, and the tide of joy swell in every bosom, when that symbolic cloud was seen slowly and majestically descending towards the plain below and covering the tabernacle. The entire and universal concealment of the tabernacle within the folds of an impervious cloud was not without a deep and instructive meaning; it was a protection to the sacred edifice from the burning heats of the Arabian climate; it was a token of the Divine Presence; and it was also an emblem of the Mosaic dispensation, which, though it was a revelation from heaven, yet left many things hid in obscurity; for it was a dark cloud compared with the bright cloud, which betokened the clearer and fuller discoveries of the divine character and glory in the gospel (마17:5).
the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle—that is, light and fire, a created splendor, which was the peculiar symbol of God (요일1:5). Whether this light was inherent in the cloud or not, it emanated from it on this occasion, and making its entry, not with the speed of a lightning flash as if it were merely an electric spark, but in majestic splendor, it passed through the outer porch into the interior of the most holy place (왕상8:10; 요1:14). Its miraculous character is shown by the fact, that, though "it filled the tabernacle," not a curtain or any article of furniture was so much as singed.
【출40:34 MHCC】The cloud covered the tabernacle even in the clearest day; it was not a cloud which the sun scatters. This cloud was a token of God's presence to be seen day and night, by all Israel, that they might never again question, Is the Lord among us, or is he not? It guided the camp of Israel through the wilderness. While the cloud rested on the tabernacle, they rested; when it removed, they followed it. The glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. In light and fire the Shechinah made itself visible: God is Light; our God is a consuming Fire. Yet so dazzling was the light, and so dreadful the fire, that Moses was not able to enter into the tent of the congregation, till the splendour was abated. But what Moses could not do, our Lord Jesus has done, whom God caused to draw near; and who has invited us to come boldly, even to the mercy-seat. Being taught by the Holy Spirit to follow the example of Christ, as well as to depend upon him, to attend his ordinances, and obey his precepts, we shall be kept from losing our way, and be led in the midst of the paths of judgment, till we come to heaven, the habitation of his holiness. Moses was not able to enter into the tent of the congregation—How does this circumstance show the incapacity of man, in his present state, to look upon the unveiled perfections of the Godhead! Moses could not endure the unclouded effulgence, nor the sublimest of the prophets (사6:5). But what neither Moses nor the most eminent of God's messengers to the ancient church through the weakness of nature could endure, we can all now do by an exercise of faith; looking unto Jesus, who reflected with chastened radiance the brightness of the Father's glory; and who, having as the Forerunner for us, entered within the veil, has invited us to come boldly to the mercy seat. While Moses was compelled, through the influence of overwhelming awe, to stand aloof and could not enter the tabernacle, Christ entered into the holy place not made with hands; nay, He is Himself the true tabernacle, filled with the glory of God, ever with the grace and truth which the Shekinah typified. What great reason we have to thank God for Jesus Christ, who, while He Himself was the brightness of the Father's glory, yet exhibited that glory in so mild and attractive a manner, as to allure us to draw near with confidence and love into the Divine Presence!
【출40:36 JFB】36. when the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle—In journeying through the sandy, trackless deserts of the East, the use of torches, exhibiting a cloud of smoke by day and of fire by night, has been resorted to from time immemorial. The armies of Darius and Alexander were conducted on their marches in this manner [Faber]. The Arab caravans in the present day observe the same custom; and materials for these torches are stored up among other necessary preparations for a journey. Live fuel, hoisted in chafing dishes at the end of long poles, and being seen at a great distance, serves, by the smoke in the daytime and the light at night, as a better signal for march than the sound of a trumpet, which is not heard at the extremities of a large camp [Laborde]. This usage, and the miracle related by Moses, mutually illustrate each other. The usage leads us to think that the miracle was necessary, and worthy of God to perform; and, on the other hand, the miracle of the cloudy pillar, affording double benefit of shade by day and light at night, implies not only that the usage was not unknown to the Hebrews, but supplied all the wants which they felt in common with other travellers through those dreary regions [Faber, Hess, Grandpierre]. But its peculiar appearance, unvarying character, and regular movements, distinguished it from all the common atmospheric phenomena. It was an invaluable boon to the Israelites, and being recognized by all classes among that people as the symbol of the Divine Presence, it guided their journeys and regulated their encampments (compare 시29:1-11; 105:1-45).
