■ 창세기 50장
1. 요셉이 아비 얼굴에 구푸려 울며 입맞추고
And Joseph fell upon his father’s face , and wept upon him, and kissed him.

And when the days of his mourning were past , Joseph spake unto the house of Pharaoh , saying , If now I have found grace in your eyes , speak , I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh , saying ,

My father made me swear , saying , Lo , I die : in my grave which I have digged for me in the land of Canaan , there shalt thou bury me . Now therefore let me go up , I pray thee, and bury my father , and I will come again .

And Pharaoh said , Go up , and bury thy father , according as he made thee swear .

And all the house of Joseph , and his brethren , and his father’s house : only their little ones , and their flocks , and their herds , they left in the land of Goshen .
9. 병거와 기병이 요셉을 따라 올라가니 그 떼가 심히 컸더라
And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen : and it was a very great company .
10. 그들이 요단 강 건너편 아닷 타작마당에 이르러 거기서 크게 호곡하고 애통하며 요셉이 아비를 위하여 칠 일 동안 애곡하였더니
And they came to the threshingfloor of Atad , which is beyond Jordan , and there they mourned with a great and very sore lamentation : and he made a mourning for his father seven days .
11. 그 땅 거민 가나안 백성들이 아닷 마당의 애통을 보고 가로되 이는 애굽 사람의 큰 애통이라 하였으므로 그 땅 이름을 아벨미스라임이라 하였으니 곧 요단 강 건너편이더라
And when the inhabitants of the land , the Canaanites , saw the mourning in the floor of Atad , they said , This is a grievous mourning to the Egyptians : wherefore the name of it was called Abel–mizraim , which is beyond Jordan .

And his sons did unto him according as he commanded them:

For his sons carried him into the land of Canaan , and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah , which Abraham bought with the field for a possession of a buryingplace of Ephron the Hittite , before Mamre .
14. 요셉이 아비를 장사한 후에 자기 형제와 호상군과 함께 애굽으로 돌아왔더라
And Joseph returned into Egypt , he, and his brethren , and all that went up with him to bury his father , after he had buried his father .
15. 요셉의 형제들이 그 아비가 죽었음을 보고 말하되 요셉이 혹시 우리를 미워하여 우리가 그에게 행한 모든 악을 다 갚지나 아니할까 하고
And when Joseph’s brethren saw that their father was dead , they said , Joseph will peradventure hate us , and will certainly requite us all the evil which we did unto him.

And they sent a messenger unto Joseph , saying , Thy father did command before he died , saying ,

So shall ye say unto Joseph , Forgive , I pray thee now, the trespass of thy brethren , and their sin ; for they did unto thee evil : and now, we pray thee, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of thy father . And Joseph wept when they spake unto him.
18. 그 형들이 또 친히 와서 요셉의 앞에 엎드려 가로되 우리는 당신의 종이니이다
And his brethren also went and fell down before his face ; and they said , Behold, we be thy servants .
19. 요셉이 그들에게 이르되 두려워 마소서 내가 하나님을 대신하리이까
And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the place of God ?
20. 당신들은 나를 해하려 하였으나 하나님은 그것을 선으로 바꾸사 오늘과 같이 만민의 생명을 구원하게 하시려 하셨나니
But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good , to bring to pass , as it is this day , to save much people alive .
21. 당신들은 두려워 마소서 내가 당신들과 당신들의 자녀를 기르리이다 하고 그들을 간곡한 말로 위로하였더라
Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, and your little ones . And he comforted them, and spake kindly unto them.
22. 요셉이 그 아비의 가족과 함께 애굽에 거하여 일백십 세를 살며
And Joseph dwelt in Egypt , he, and his father’s house : and Joseph lived an hundred and ten years .
23. 에브라임의 자손 삼대를 보았으며 므낫세의 아들 마길의 아들들도 요셉의 슬하에서 양육되었더라
And Joseph saw Ephraim’s children of the third generation: the children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were brought up upon Joseph’s knees .
24. 요셉이 그 형제에게 이르되 나는 죽으나 하나님이 너희를 권고하시고 너희를 이 땅에서 인도하여 내사 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱에게 맹세하신 땅에 이르게 하시리라 하고
And Joseph said unto his brethren , I die : and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham , to Isaac , and to Jacob .
25. 요셉이 또 이스라엘 자손에게 맹세시켜 이르기를 하나님이 정녕 너희를 권고하시리니 너희는 여기서 내 해골을 메고 올라가겠다 하라 하였더라
And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel , saying , God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence .

So Joseph died , being an hundred and ten years old : and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt .

【창50:1 JFB】창50:1-26. Mourning for Jacob.
1. Joseph fell upon his father's face, &c.—On him, as the principal member of the family, devolved the duty of closing the eyes of his venerable parent (compare 창46:4) and imprinting the farewell kiss.

With the history of Joseph, Genesis concludes what is called the patriarchal age. Yet there are two or three facts for consideration before passing to the next book.
1. The Life of Judah.
For example, Joseph's history was interrupted almost at the beginning by that of his brother Judah (c. 38). A shameful history is that of Judah, but recorded because of its bearing upon the genealogy of Jesus, since Tamar, prostitute though she were, became an ancestress of our blessed Lord (마1:3).
2. Jacob Blessing Joseph's Sons, 48.
Note the past and the future of Jacob's faith as enunciated in vv. 3 and 4: his adoption of the two sons of Joseph, and how in some sense they were to receive the blessing forfeited by Reuben and Simeon (see the following chapter, and compare 대상5:1, 2). By the adoption of these two sons the tribes of Israel were enlarged to thirteen, but by a special divine arrangement, as we shall see subsequently, that of Levi had no part in the division of the land of Canaan, and the nation was thus able to always preserve the original number, twelve.
Of the two sons of Joseph Jacob gave the pre-eminence to one contrary to the law of primogeniture and evidently by divine guidance, though for reasons we do not know. By and by we shall see a fulfillment of this predictive blessing in the pre-eminence of the tribe of Ephraim. Notice the form of blessing on these sons, a kind of credal expression of Jacob (vv. 15, 16). This is the earliest creed of the true faith on record, and suggests an example to us in these days when all sorts of people say they believe in God, meaning so many different things thereby. We should be careful that it be known in what God we believe, namely, "the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ," with all that the term implies. When in this blessing Jacob speaks of "the Angel" who redeemed him, he means Jehovah Himself, since (as we have learned) He is identical with the second Person of the Trinity. "Angel" means "the sent One," in which connection read 갈4:4, 5.
Note the triumphant faith of Jacob through this closing transaction of his career. His assurance of the fulfillment of God's promises to His people takes away the fear of death from him and leads him to regard those promises greater than all the worldly glories enjoyed by Joseph and his sons as princes of Egypt. Observe also that he disposes of that which God has promised him for his descendants with as much confidence, as he would dispose of an earthly estate.
3. Jacob's Prophecy of the Twelve Tribes, 49.
In accordance with the curse on Reuben (3, 4), his tribe never attained distinction in Israel. Simeon and Levi for the same reason were both divided and scattered in the later allotment of the land (5-7): see for the former, 수19:9; 대하15:9 and 34:6, and for the latter 민35:7, 8 and 수21:1-42, Levi's curse was turned into a blessing, doubtless because of their righteous conduct, as will be seen later. Compare 출32:25 and 신33:8-11.
The reason Judah obtained the preeminence (8-12) was not for his superior moral character (as we have seen) but for reasons known only to God. "Judah" means "praise," and as Grant says, it is striking to see in the history of Israel how when Judah came to power in the time of David, the worship of Jehovah revived. David who came to Judah was himself the sweet psalmist of Israel who has given to the saints of every generation songs of praise that never grow old.
It is in connection with Judah (10) that we have the clearest prophecy of the Redeemer since that of Eden (창3:15). His was to be the royal tribe, and the scepter should not depart from him nor the lawgiver (or the rulers' staff) from between his feet until Shiloh should come. Both Jews and Christians agree that Shiloh, "peace-maker," applies to Christ, in which regard it is noticeable that the tribe of Judah maintained at least the semblance of government in Israel until after the crucifixion, while since that time she has had no national existence. All agree in regarding this one of the strong evidences of the Messiahship of Jesus.
Zebulon, in fulfillment of the prediction in v. 13, dwelt on the Sea of Galilee, his border running back on the west and north to Sidon. Naphtali being contiguous. Their occupations and dangers as seamen made them courageous, and "they jeoparded their lives" in the battles of the Kingdom
(대상12:33-34). The territory of Issachar was one of the most fertile in Canaan, explaining their pacific and industrious life as predicted in vv. 14, 15. The language concerning Dan is difficult to understand (v. 16, 17), but Asher's territory like that of the two other tribes mentioned was one of the best in Israel and corresponded with the meaning of his name, "happy" or
"fortunate." Of Naphtali we have spoken in connection with Zebulon. The tribe of Benjamin seems to have been always warlike and cruel in character.
The death of Jacob calls attention to the fact that his last days were not only his most tranquil but those in which we see the work of his conversion and sanctification carried to its culminating point.
4. The Burial of Jacob and the Death of Joseph, 50.
What period of time was devoted to the ceremonial worship for the grandees of Egypt (v. 3)? During this period Joseph was isolated from the court of Pharaoh, which accounts for his request of others (v. 4, 5).
How did Joseph's brethren exhibit needless fear on their return (15, 16)? Do you think they spoke the truth in alluding to their father, or was it a ruse on their part? How does the circumstance illustrate the power of a guilty conscience? How does Joseph's reply illustrate the kindness of God to us in Christ (21)? In what way does the circumstance suggest the ground of assurance for them who put their trust in Christ?
In what way did Joseph exhibit his faith in God's promise concerning Israel (24, 25)? Compare 히11:22.
【창50:1 MHCC】Though pious relatives and friends have lived to a good old age, and we are confident they are gone to glory, yet we may regret our own loss, and pay respect to their memory by lamenting them. Grace does not destroy, but it purifies, moderates, and regulates natural affection. The departed soul is out of the reach of any tokens of our affection; but it is proper to show respect to the body, of which we look for a glorious and joyful resurrection, whatever may become of its remains in this world. Thus Joseph showed his faith in God, and love to his father. He ordered the body to be embalmed, or wrapped up with spices, to preserve it. See how vile our bodies are, when the soul has forsaken them; they will in a very little time become noisome, and offensive.
【창50:2 JFB】2. Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father, &c.—In ancient Egypt the embalmers were a class by themselves. The process of embalmment consisted in infusing a great quantity of resinous substances into the cavities of the body, after the intestines had been removed, and then a regulated degree of heat was applied to dry up the humors, as well as decompose the tarry materials which had been previously introduced. Thirty days were alloted for the completion of this process; forty more were spent in anointing it with spices; the body, tanned from this operation, being then washed, was wrapped in numerous folds of linen cloth—the joinings of which were fastened with gum, and then it was deposited in a wooden chest made in the form of a human figure.

Joseph spake unto the house of Pharaoh, &c.—Care was taken to let it be known that the family sepulchre was provided before leaving Canaan and that an oath bound his family to convey the remains thither. Besides, Joseph deemed it right to apply for a special leave of absence; and being unfit, as a mourner, to appear in the royal presence, he made the request through the medium of others.
【창50:7 JFB】7-9. Joseph went up to bury his father—a journey of three hundred miles. The funeral cavalcade, composed of the nobility and military, with their equipages, would exhibit an imposing appearance.
【창50:7 MHCC】Jacob's body was attended, not only by his own family, but by the great men of Egypt. Now that they were better acquainted with the Hebrews, they began to respect them. Professors of religion should endeavour by wisdom and love to remove the prejudices many have against them. Standers-by took notice of it as a grievous mourning. The death of good men is a loss to any place, and ought to be greatly lamented.
【창50:10 JFB】10. they came to the threshing-floor of Atad, &c.—"Atad" may be taken as a common noun, signifying "the plain of the thorn bushes." It was on the border between Egypt and Canaan; and as the last opportunity of indulging grief was always the most violent, the Egyptians made a prolonged halt at this spot, while the family of Jacob probably proceeded by themselves to the place of sepulture.
【창50:15 JFB】15-21. When Joseph's brethren saw that their father was dead, they said, Joseph will peradventure hate us, &c.—Joseph was deeply affected by this communication. He gave them the strongest assurances of his forgiveness and thereby gave both a beautiful trait of his own pious character, as well as appeared an eminent type of the Saviour.
【창50:15 MHCC】Various motives might cause the sons of Jacob to continue in Egypt, notwithstanding the prophetic vision Abraham had of their bondage there. Judging of Joseph from the general temper of human nature, they thought he would now avenge himself on those who hated and injured him without cause. Not being able to resist, or to flee away, they attempted to soften him by humbling themselves. They pleaded with him as the servants of Jacob's God. Joseph was much affected at seeing this complete fulfilment of his dreams. He directs them not to fear him, but to fear God; to humble themselves before the Lord, and to seek the Divine forgiveness. He assures them of his own kindness to them. See what an excellent spirit Joseph was of, and learn of him to render good for evil. He comforted them, and, to banish all their fears, he spake kindly to them. Broken spirits must be bound up and encouraged. Those we love and forgive, we must not only do well for, but speak kindly to.
【창50:22 JFB】22, 23. Joseph dwelt in Egypt—He lived eighty years after his elevation to the chief power [see on 창41:46] witnessing a great increase in the prosperity of the kingdom, and also of his own family and kindred—the infant Church of God.
【창50:22 MHCC】Joseph having honoured his father, his days were long in the land, which, for the present, God had given him. When he saw his death approaching, he comforted his brethren with the assurance of their return to Canaan in due time. We must comfort others with the same comforts with which we have been comforted of God, and encourage them to rest on the promises which are our support. For a confession of his own faith, and a confirmation of theirs, he charges them to keep his remains unburied till that glorious day, when they should be settled in the land of promise. Thus Joseph, by faith in the doctrine of the resurrection, and the promise of Canaan, gave commandment concerning his bones. This would keep up their expectation of a speedy departure from Egypt, and keep Canaan continually in their minds. This would also attach Joseph's posterity to their brethren. The death, as well as the life of this eminent saint, was truly excellent; both furnish us with strong encouragement to persevere in the service of God. How happy to set our early in the heavenly race, to continue stedfastly, and to finish the course with joy! This Joseph did, this we also may do. Even when the pains of death are upon us, if we have trusted in Him upon whom the patriarchs, prophets, and apostles depended, we need not fear to say, “My flesh and my heart faileth, but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.”
【창50:24 JFB】24. Joseph said unto his brethren, I die—The national feelings of the Egyptians would have been opposed to his burial in Canaan; but he gave the strongest proof of the strength of his faith and full assurance of the promises, by "the commandment concerning his bones" [히11:22].
