■ 창세기 24장
1. 아브라함이 나이 많아 늙었고 여호와께서 그의 범사에 복을 주셨더라
And Abraham was old , and well stricken in age : and the Lord had blessed Abraham in all things.
2. 아브라함이 자기 집 모든 소유를 맡은 늙은 종에게 이르되 청컨대 네 손을 내 환도뼈 밑에 넣으라
And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house , that ruled over all that he had, Put , I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh :
3. 내가 너로 하늘의 하나님, 땅의 하나님이신 여호와를 가리켜 맹세하게 하노니 너는 나의 거하는 이 지방 가나안 족속의 딸 중에서 내 아들을 위하여 아내를 택하지 말고
And I will make thee swear by the Lord , the God of heaven , and the God of the earth , that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites , among whom I dwell :
4. 내 고향 내 족속에게로 가서 내 아들 이삭을 위하여 아내를 택하라
But thou shalt go unto my country , and to my kindred , and take a wife unto my son Isaac .
5. 종이 가로되 여자가 나를 좇아 이 땅으로 오고자 아니하거든 내가 주인의 아들을 주인의 나오신 땅으로 인도하여 돌아가리이까
And the servant said unto him, Peradventure the woman will not be willing to follow me unto this land : must I needs bring thy son again unto the land from whence thou camest ?
6. 아브라함이 그에게 이르되 삼가 내 아들을 그리로 데리고 돌아가지 말라
And Abraham said unto him, Beware thou that thou bring not my son thither again .
7. 하늘의 하나님 여호와께서 나를 내 아버지의 집과 내 본토에서 떠나게 하시고 내게 말씀하시며 내게 맹세하여 이르시기를 이 땅을 네 씨에게 주리라 하셨으니 그가 그 사자를 네 앞서 보내실지라 네가 거기서 내 아들을 위하여 아내를 택할지니라
The Lord God of heaven , which took me from my father’s house , and from the land of my kindred , and which spake unto me, and that sware unto me, saying , Unto thy seed will I give this land ; he shall send his angel before thee , and thou shalt take a wife unto my son from thence.
8. 만일 여자가 너를 좇아 오고자 아니하면 나의 이 맹세가 너와 상관이 없나니 오직 내 아들을 데리고 그리로 가지 말지니라
And if the woman will not be willing to follow thee , then thou shalt be clear from this my oath : only bring not my son thither again .
9. 종이 이에 주인 아브라함의 환도뼈 아래 손을 넣고 이 일에 대하여 그에게 맹세하였더라
And the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master , and sware to him concerning that matter .
10. 이에 종이 그 주인의 약대 중 열 필을 취하고 떠났는데 곧 그 주인의 모든 좋은 것을 가지고 떠나 메소보다미아로 가서 나홀의 성에 이르러
And the servant took ten camels of the camels of his master , and departed ; for all the goods of his master were in his hand : and he arose , and went to Mesopotamia , unto the city of Nahor .
11. 그 약대를 성 밖 우물 곁에 꿇렸으니 저녁때라 여인들이 물을 길러 나올 때이었더라
And he made his camels to kneel down without the city by a well of water at the time of the evening , even the time that women go out to draw water.
12. 그가 가로되 우리 주인 아브라함의 하나님 여호와여 원컨대 오늘날 나로 순적히 만나게 하사 나의 주인 아브라함에게 은혜를 베푸시옵소서
And he said , O Lord God of my master Abraham , I pray thee, send me good speed this day , and shew kindness unto my master Abraham .
13. 성 중 사람의 딸들이 물 길러 나오겠사오니 내가 우물 곁에 섰다가
Behold, I stand here by the well of water ; and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water :
14. 한 소녀에게 이르기를 청컨대 너는 물 항아리를 기울여 나로 마시게 하라 하리니 그의 대답이 마시라 내가 당신의 약대에게도 마시우리라 하면 그는 주께서 주의 종 이삭을 위하여 정하신 자라 이로 인하여 주께서 나의 주인에게 은혜 베푸심을 내가 알겠나이다
And let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say , Let down thy pitcher , I pray thee, that I may drink ; and she shall say , Drink , and I will give thy camels drink also: let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac ; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master .
15. 말을 마치지 못하여서 리브가가 물 항아리를 어깨에 메고 나오니 그는 아브라함의 동생 나홀의 아내 밀가의 아들 브두엘의 소생이라
And it came to pass, before he had done speaking , that, behold, Rebekah came out , who was born to Bethuel , son of Milcah , the wife of Nahor , Abraham’s brother , with her pitcher upon her shoulder .
16. 그 소녀는 보기에 심히 아리땁고 지금까지 남자가 가까이 하지아니한 처녀더라 그가 우물에 내려가서 물을 그 물 항아리에 채워 가지고 올라오는지라
And the damsel was very fair to look upon , a virgin , neither had any man known her: and she went down to the well , and filled her pitcher , and came up .
17. 종이 마주 달려가서 가로되 청컨대 네 물 항아리의 물을 내게 조금 마시우라
And the servant ran to meet her , and said , Let me, I pray thee, drink a little water of thy pitcher .
18. 그가 가로되 주여 마시소서 하며 급히 그 물 항아리를 손에 내려 마시게 하고
And she said , Drink , my lord : and she hasted , and let down her pitcher upon her hand , and gave him drink .
19. 마시우기를 다하고 가로되 당신의 약대도 위하여 물을 길어 그것들로 배불리 마시게 하리이다 하고
And when she had done giving him drink , she said , I will draw water for thy camels also, until they have done drinking .
20. 급히 물 항아리의 물을 구유에 붓고 다시 길으려고 우물로 달려가서 모든 약대를 위하여 긷는지라
And she hasted , and emptied her pitcher into the trough , and ran again unto the well to draw water, and drew for all his camels .
21. 그 사람이 그를 묵묵히 주목하며 여호와께서 과연 평탄한 길을 주신 여부를 알고자 하더니
And the man wondering at her held his peace , to wit whether the Lord had made his journey prosperous or not.
22. 약대가 마시기를 다하매 그가 반 세겔중 금고리 한개와 열 세겔 중 금 손목고리 한 쌍을 그에게 주며
And it came to pass, as the camels had done drinking , that the man took a golden earring of half a shekel weight , and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold ;
23. 가로되 네가 뉘 딸이냐 청컨대 내게 고하라 네 부친의 집에 우리 유숙할 곳이 있느냐
And said , Whose daughter art thou ? tell me, I pray thee: is there room in thy father’s house for us to lodge in ?
24. 그 여자가 그에게 이르되 나는 밀가가 나홀에게 낳은 아들 브두엘의 딸이니이다
And she said unto him, I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah , which she bare unto Nahor .
25. 또 가로되 우리에게 짚과 보리가 족하며 유숙할 곳도 있나이다
She said moreover unto him, We have both straw and provender enough , and room to lodge in .
26. 이에 그 사람이 머리를 숙여 여호와께 경배하고
And the man bowed down his head , and worshipped the Lord .
27. 가로되 나의 주인 아브라함의 하나님 여호와를 찬송하나이다 나의 주인에게 주의 인자와 성실을 끊이지 아니하셨사오며 여호와께서 길에서 나를 인도하사 내 주인의 동생집에 이르게 하셨나이다 하니라
And he said , Blessed be the Lord God of my master Abraham , who hath not left destitute my master of his mercy and his truth : I being in the way , the Lord led me to the house of my master’s brethren .
28. 소녀가 달려가서 이 일을 어미 집에 고하였더니
And the damsel ran , and told them of her mother’s house these things .
29. 리브가에게 오라비가 있어 이름은 라반이라 그가 우물로 달려가 그 사람에게 이르니
And Rebekah had a brother , and his name was Laban : and Laban ran out unto the man , unto the well .
30. 그가 그 누이의 고리와 그 손의 손목고리를 보고 또 그 누이 리브가가 그 사람이 자기에게 이같이 말하더라 함을 듣고 그 사람에게로 나아감이라 때에 그가 우물가 약대 곁에 섰더라
And it came to pass, when he saw the earring and bracelets upon his sister’s hands , and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister , saying , Thus spake the man unto me; that he came unto the man ; and, behold, he stood by the camels at the well .
31. 라반이 가로되 여호와께 복을 받은 자여 들어오소서 어찌 밖에 섰나이까 내가 방과 약대의 처소를 예비하였나이다
And he said , Come in , thou blessed of the Lord ; wherefore standest thou without ? for I have prepared the house , and room for the camels .
32. 그 사람이 집으로 들어가매 라반이 약대의 짐을 부리고 짚과 보리를 약대에게 주고 그 사람의 발과 그 종자의 발 씻을 물을 주고
And the man came into the house : and he ungirded his camels , and gave straw and provender for the camels , and water to wash his feet , and the men’s feet that were with him.
33. 그 앞에 식물을 베푸니 그 사람이 가로되 내가 내 일을 진술하기 전에는 먹지 아니하겠나이다 라반이 가로되 말하소서
And there was set meat before him to eat : but he said , I will not eat , until I have told mine errand . And he said , Speak on .
34. 그가 가로되 나는 아브라함의 종이니이다
And he said , I am Abraham’s servant .
35. 여호와께서 나의 주인에게 크게 복을 주어 창성케 하시되 우양과 은금과 노비와 약대와 나귀를 그에게 주셨고
And the Lord hath blessed my master greatly ; and he is become great : and he hath given him flocks , and herds , and silver , and gold , and menservants , and maidservants , and camels , and asses .
36. 나의 주인의 부인 사라가 노년에 나의 주인에게 아들을 낳으매 주인이 그 모든 소유를 그 아들에게 주었나이다
And Sarah my master’s wife bare a son to my master when she was old : and unto him hath he given all that he hath.
37. 나의 주인이 나로 맹세하게 하여 가로되 너는 내 아들을 위하여 나사는 땅 가나안 족속의 딸 중에서 아내를 택하지 말고
And my master made me swear , saying , Thou shalt not take a wife to my son of the daughters of the Canaanites , in whose land I dwell :
38. 내 아비 집 내 족속에게로 가서 내 아들을 위하여 아내를 택하라 하시기로
But thou shalt go unto my father’s house , and to my kindred , and take a wife unto my son .
39. 내가 내 주인에게 말씀하되 혹 여자가 나를 좇지 아니하면 어찌하리이까 한즉
And I said unto my master , Peradventure the woman will not follow me.
40. 주인이 내게 이르되 나의 섬기는 여호와께서 그 사자를 너와 함께 보내어 네게 평탄한 길을 주시리니 너는 내 족속 중 내 아비 집에서 내 아들을 위하여 아내를 택할 것이니라
And he said unto me, The Lord , before whom I walk , will send his angel with thee, and prosper thy way ; and thou shalt take a wife for my son of my kindred , and of my father’s house :
41. 네가 내 족속에게 이를 때에는 네가 내 맹세와 상관이 없으리라 설혹 그들이 네게 주지 아니할지라도 네가 내 맹세와 상관이 없으리라 하시기로
Then shalt thou be clear from this my oath , when thou comest to my kindred ; and if they give not thee one, thou shalt be clear from my oath .
42. 내가 오늘 우물에 이르러 말씀하기를 나의 주인 아브라함의 하나님 여호와여 만일 나의 행하는 길에 형통함을 주실진대
And I came this day unto the well , and said , O Lord God of my master Abraham , if now thou do prosper my way which I go :
43. 내가 이 우물 곁에 섰다가 청년 여자가 물을 길러 오거든 내가 그에게 청하기를 너는 물 항아리의 물을 내게 조금 마시우라 하여
Behold, I stand by the well of water ; and it shall come to pass, that when the virgin cometh forth to draw water, and I say to her, Give me , I pray thee, a little water of thy pitcher to drink ;
44. 그의 대답이 당신은 마시라 내가 또 당신의 약대를 위하여도 길으리라 하면 그 여자는 여호와께서 나의 주인의 아들을 위하여 정하여 주신 자가 되리이다 하며
And she say to me, Both drink thou, and I will also draw for thy camels : let the same be the woman whom the Lord hath appointed out for my master’s son .
45. 내가 묵도하기를 마치지 못하여 리브가가 물 항아리를 어깨에 메고 나와서 우물로 내려와 긷기로 내가 그에게 이르기를 청컨대 내게 마시우라 한즉
And before I had done speaking in mine heart , behold, Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder ; and she went down unto the well , and drew water: and I said unto her, Let me drink , I pray thee.
46. 그가 급히 물 항아리를 어깨에서 내리며 가로되 마시라 내가 당신의 약대에게도 마시우리라 하기로 내가 마시매 그가 또 약대에게도 마시운지라
And she made haste , and let down her pitcher from her shoulder, and said , Drink , and I will give thy camels drink also: so I drank , and she made the camels drink also.
47. 내가 그에게 묻기를 네가 뉘 딸이뇨 한즉 가로되 밀가가 나홀에게 낳은 브두엘의 딸이라 하기로 내가 고리를 그 코에 꿰고 손목고리를 그 손에 끼우고
And I asked her, and said , Whose daughter art thou? And she said , The daughter of Bethuel , Nahor’s son , whom Milcah bare unto him: and I put the earring upon her face , and the bracelets upon her hands .
48. 나의 주인 아브라함의 하나님 여호와께서 나를 바른 길로 인도하사 나의 주인의 동생의 딸을 그 아들을 위하여 택하게 하셨으므로 내가 머리를 숙여 그에게 경배하고 찬송하였나이다
And I bowed down my head , and worshipped the Lord , and blessed the Lord God of my master Abraham , which had led me in the right way to take my master’s brother’s daughter unto his son .
49. 이제 당신들이 인자와 진실로 나의 주인을 대접하려거든 내게 고하시고 그렇지 않을지라도 내게 고하여 나로 좌우간 행하게 하소서
And now if ye will deal kindly and truly with my master , tell me: and if not, tell me; that I may turn to the right hand , or to the left .
50. 라반과 브두엘이 대답하여 가로되 이 일이 여호와께로 말미암았으니 우리는 가부를 말할 수 없노라
Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said , The thing proceedeth from the Lord : we cannot speak unto thee bad or good .
51. 리브가가 그대 앞에 있으니 데리고 가서 여호와의 명대로 그로 그대의 주인의 아들의 아내가 되게 하라
Behold, Rebekah is before thee , take her, and go , and let her be thy master’s son’s wife , as the Lord hath spoken .
52. 아브라함의 종이 그들의 말을 듣고 땅에 엎드리어 여호와께 절하고
And it came to pass, that, when Abraham’s servant heard their words , he worshipped the Lord , bowing himself to the earth .
53. 은금 패물과 의복을 꺼내어 리브가에게 주고 그 오라비와 어미에게도 보물을 주니라
And the servant brought forth jewels of silver , and jewels of gold , and raiment , and gave them to Rebekah : he gave also to her brother and to her mother precious things .
54. 이에 그들 곧 종과 종자들이 먹고 마시고 유숙하고 아침에 일어나서 그가 가로되 나를 보내어 내 주인에게로 돌아가게 하소서
And they did eat and drink , he and the men that were with him, and tarried all night ; and they rose up in the morning , and he said , Send me away unto my master .
55. 리브가의 오라비와 그 어미가 가로되 소녀로 며칠을 적어도 열흘을 우리와 함께 있게 하라 그 후에 그가 갈 것이니라
And her brother and her mother said , Let the damsel abide with us a few days , at the least ten ; after that she shall go .
56. 그 사람이 그들에게 이르되 나를 만류치 마소서 여호와께서 내게 형통한 길을 주셨으니 나를 보내어 내 주인에게로 돌아가게 하소서
And he said unto them, Hinder me not, seeing the Lord hath prospered my way ; send me away that I may go to my master .
57. 그들이 가로되 우리가 소녀를 불러 그에게 물으리라 하고
And they said , We will call the damsel , and enquire at her mouth .
58. 리브가를 불러 그에게 이르되 네가 이 사람과 함께 가려느냐 그가 대답하되 가겠나이다
And they called Rebekah , and said unto her, Wilt thou go with this man ? And she said , I will go .
59. 그들이 그 누이 리브가와 그의 유모와 아브라함의 종과 종자들을 보내며
And they sent away Rebekah their sister , and her nurse , and Abraham’s servant , and his men .
60. 리브가에게 축복하여 가로되 우리 누이여 너는 천만인의 어미가 될지어다 네 씨로 그 원수의 성문을 얻게 할지어다
And they blessed Rebekah , and said unto her, Thou art our sister , be thou the mother of thousands of millions , and let thy seed possess the gate of those which hate them.
61. 리브가가 일어나 비자와 함께 약대를 타고 그 사람을 따라가니 종이 리브가를 데리고 가니라
And Rebekah arose , and her damsels , and they rode upon the camels , and followed the man : and the servant took Rebekah , and went his way .
62. 때에 이삭이 브엘라해로이에서 왔으니 그가 남방에 거하였었음이라
And Isaac came from the way of the well Lahai–roi ; for he dwelt in the south country .
63. 이삭이 저물 때에 들에 나가 묵상하다가 눈을 들어 보매 약대들이 오더라
And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide : and he lifted up his eyes , and saw , and, behold, the camels were coming .
64. 리브가가 눈을 들어 이삭을 바라보고 약대에서 내려
And Rebekah lifted up her eyes , and when she saw Isaac , she lighted off the camel .
65. 종에게 말하되 들에서 배회하다가 우리에게로 마주 오는 자가 누구뇨 종이 가로되 이는 내 주인이니이다 리브가가 면박을 취하여 스스로 가리우더라
For she had said unto the servant , What man is this that walketh in the field to meet us ? And the servant had said , It is my master : therefore she took a vail , and covered herself .
66. 종이 그 행한 일을 다 이삭에게 고하매
And the servant told Isaac all things that he had done .
67. 이삭이 리브가를 인도하여 모친 사라의 장막으로 들이고 그를 취하여 아내를 삼고 사랑하였으니 이삭이 모친 상사 후에 위로를 얻었더라
And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent , and took Rebekah , and she became his wife ; and he loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.

【창24:1 JFB】창24:1-9. A Marriage Commission.
1. And Abraham was old … take a wife—His anxiety to see his son married was natural to his position as a pastoral chief interested in preserving the honor of his tribe, and still more as a patriarch who had regard to the divine promise of a numerous posterity.

Traveling facilities were limited in Abraham's time, so that communications between families separated by long distances were few and far between. But he seems to have gotten news from his brother's home sometime after the birth of Isaac, as recorded at the close of c. 22, a circumstance linking that chapter to the one we are now considering.
1. Selecting the Bride, 24:1-52.
Notice the preparation made by Abraham for Isaac's marriage (1-9), the oath he administers to his servant, the condition he exacts, the prohibition he places upon him, the assurances he gives him, the exemption he grants. It may not at first appear why Abraham is so solicitous that Isaac's wife shall be taken from his own people rather than the Canaanites, since both were idolaters. But the evil traits of the Canaanites, which afterwards caused them to be driven out of the land, must have been apparent to Abraham even then; moreover there may have been something in his people on the other side of the Euphrates making them more amenable to the purposes of God with reference to the coming Seed, in whom all the families of the earth should be blessed. But it is always to be kept in mind that Abraham was under the guidance of God, and that there was more than man's wisdom or foresight in this transaction.
Notice the preparation made by the servant for his journey (10-14), and observe that the gifts were a dowry for the expected bride, to be paid, however, in accordance with oriental custom, not to her but to her father. How does the servant show his knowledge of the true God? How does his prayer illustrate 잠3:5, 6? And yet there is another side to the matter, for it is ill-advised to leave the decisions of life to the arbitrament of signs, and grievous errors have arisen from accrediting God with the outcome of them. "When we have the Word of God, the Spirit of God and the providences of God for our guides, and the throne of grace open to our appeals, it is expected and doubtless salutary that we bear the responsibility of our own decisions in difficult places." Indeed, we are likely to show more reverence for and confidence in God's guidance in this way than in the other.
Notice the facts about Rebekah in vv, 15-28.
Notice the servant's faithfulness in vv. 29-52. Do we get a touch of Laban's character in vv. 30, 31? How does it impress you? How does the servant testify to Abraham and his son in vv. 35, 36? What is the result of the embassy so far as the father and brother of Rebekah are concerned? Which of the two seems to assume the more importance?
2. Accepting the Husband, 24:53-61.
Notice the additional gifts now presented to Rebekah. But who else are also remembered? What objection is interposed, by whom, and why? Who settles the question, and how? What blessing is pronounced upon her? Do you think it has been, or will be, fulfilled?
3. The Marriage Rite, 24:62-67.
Notice how Isaac is represented in v. 63. Was he thinking about his bride? Notice the action of Rebekah, which was an indication of the inferiority to men with which women were then regarded. It would have been improper for Rebekah to have approached her future husband either unveiled or riding, instead of walking. What title did the servant give to Isaac, and what report did he make to him? In what did the wedding ceremony consist? What must have been the significance to the whole camp in this act of Isaac in bringing Rebekah "into his mother Sarah's tent"? Did it not show that she had now come into that place of importance and authority theretofore occupied by Sarah, and belonging by right to her, who was the recognized wife of the head of the clan?
4. The Symbolism of the Transaction.
We have, in this beautiful story, a striking type of the union between Christ and His bride, the Church;
(1) Abraham arranged the marriage for Isaac, and so the Father has made the marriage for Christ (마22:1, 2);
(2) The servant selected the bride, and so the Holy Spirit calls out the Church (고전6:11; 12:3, 13);
(3) The plan of the servant was simply to tell who his master was, and how he had honored his son, and so the Holy Spirit takes the things of Christ and shows them unto us (요15:26; 16:13-15).
See further the free agency of the bride in accepting Isaac, and the expression of her purpose in the words "I will go"; also, the separation from loved ones, but the compensation for all in anticipation.
Observe, as well, Isaac's coming out to meet her in the eventide, with its suggestion of Christ's return for His Church at the close of the present age (요14:1-3); and even his leading Rebekah into his mother's tent, how it foreshadows the place of authority and glory the Church shall have when she reigns with Christ over the millennial earth. (마19:28; 고전6:2; 골3:4; 계20:4-6.)
5. The Death of Abraham, 25:1-10.
It is presumable that Abraham's relationship to Keturah was entered into sometime before the marriage of Isaac, and indeed it may have been before his birth. This seems probable, since v. 6, as well as 대상1:32, speaks of her as his concubine, and not his wife. The occasion for the allusion to the matter is suggested by the servant's remark in the preceding chapter concerning the possessions of Isaac (compa계24:36 with 25:5). In other words, the gifts to the offspring of Keturah and the settlement of the latter in the east were matters that had been attended to before the marriage of Isaac and Rebekah.
Note the age of Abraham (7), and the way in which his departure from this life is designated (8). affording an intimation of the conscious and sentient condition of the dead while awaiting the resurrection of their bodies.
【창24:1 MHCC】The effect of good example, good teaching, and the worship of God in a family, will generally appear in the piety, faithfulness, prudence, and affection of the servants. To live in such families, or to have such servants, both are blessings from God which should be highly valued, and thankfully acknowledged. But no concern in life is of greater importance to ourselves, to others, or to the church of God, than marriage. It therefore ought always to be undertaken with much care and prudence, especially with reference to the will of God, and with prayer for his direction and blessing. Where good parents are not consulted and regarded, the blessing of God cannot be expected. Parents, in disposing of their children, should carefully consult the welfare of their souls, and their furtherance in the way to heaven. Observe the charge Abraham gave to a good servant, one whose conduct, faithfulness, and affection, to him and his family, he had long known. Observe also, that Abraham remembers that God had wonderfully brought him out of the land of his birth, by the call of his grace; and therefore doubts not but He will prosper his care, not to bring his son thither again. God will cause that to end in our comfort, in which we sincerely aim at his glory.
【창24:2 JFB】2. said unto his eldest servant—Abraham being too old, and as the heir of the promise not being at liberty to make even a temporary visit to his native land, was obliged to intrust this delicate mission to Eliezer, whom, although putting entire confidence in him, he on this occasion bound by a solemn oath. A pastoral chief in the present day would follow the same course if he could not go himself.
【창24:3 JFB】3. thou shalt not take a wife, &c.—Among pastoral tribes the matrimonial arrangements are made by the parents, and a youth must marry, not among strangers, but in his own tribe—custom giving him a claim, which is seldom or never resisted, to the hand of his first cousin. But Abraham had a far higher motive—a fear lest, if his son married into a Canaanitish family, he might be gradually led away from the true God.
【창24:10 JFB】창24:10-67. The Journey.
10. the servant took ten camels, &c.—So great an equipage was to give the embassy an appearance worthy of the rank and wealth of Abraham; to carry provisions; to bear the marriage presents, which as usual would be distributed over several beasts; besides one or two spare camels in case of emergency.
went to Mesopotamia, &c.—A stranger in those regions, who wishes to obtain information, stations himself at one of the wells in the neighborhood of a town, and he is sure to learn all the news of the place from the women who frequent them every morning and evening. Eliezer followed this course, and letting his camels rest, he waited till the evening time of water drawing.
【창24:10 MHCC】Abraham's servant devoutly acknowledged God. We have leave to be particular in recommending our affairs to the care of Divine providence. He proposes a sign, not that he intended to proceed no further, if not gratified in it; but it is a prayer that God would provide a good wife for his young master; and that was a good prayer. She should be simple, industrious, humble, cheerful, serviceable, and hospitable. Whatever may be the fashion, common sense, as well as piety, tells us, these are the proper qualifications for a wife and mother; for one who is to be a companion to her husband, the manager of domestic concerns, and trusted to form the minds of children. When the steward came to seek a wife for his master, he did not go to places of amusement and sinful pleasure, and pray that he might meet one there, but to the well of water, expecting to find one there employed aright. He prayed that God would please to make his way in this matter plain and clear before him. Our times are in God's hand; not only events themselves, but the times of them. We must take heed of being over-bold in urging what God should do, lest the event should weaken our faith, rather than strengthen it. But God owned him by making his way clear. Rebekah, in all respects, answered the characters he sought for in the woman that was to be his master's wife. When she came to the well, she went down and filled her pitcher, and came up to go home with it. She did not stand to gaze upon the strange man his camels, but minded her business, and would not have been diverted from it but by an opportunity of doing good. She did not curiously or confidently enter into discourse with him, but answered him modestly. Being satisfied that the Lord had heard his prayer, he gave the damsel some ornaments worn in eastern countries; asking at the same time respecting her kindred. On learning that she was of his master's relations, he bowed down his head and worshipped, blessing God. His words were addressed to the Lord, but being spoken in the hearing of Rebekah, she could perceive who he was, and whence he came.
【창24:12 JFB】12. And he said, O Lord God of my master—The servant appears worthy of the master he served. He resolves to follow the leading of Providence; and while he shows good sense in the tokens he fixes upon of ascertaining the temper and character of the future bride, he never doubts but that in such a case God will direct him.
【창24:15 JFB】15-21. before he had done speaking … behold, Rebekah came out—As he anticipated, a young woman unveiled, as in pastoral regions, appeared with her pitcher on her shoulder. Her comely appearance, her affable manners, her obliging courtesy in going down the steps to fetch water not only to him but to pour it into the trough for his camels, afforded him the most agreeable surprise. She was the very person his imagination had pictured, and he proceeded to reward her civility.
【창24:22 JFB】22. the man took a golden earring, &c.—The ring was not for the ear, but the nose; the armlets, such as young women in Syria and Arabia still appear daily at wells decked in. They are worn from the elbow to the wrist, commonly made of silver, copper, brass, or horn.
【창24:23 JFB】23-27. And said, Whose daughter art thou?—After telling her name and family, the kind-hearted damsel hastened home to give notice of a stranger's arrival.
【창24:28 JFB】28. and told them of her mother's house these things—the female apartments. This family was in an advanced stage of pastoral life, dwelling in a settled place and a fixed habitation.
【창24:29 JFB】29-31. Rebekah had a brother … Laban ran out—From what we know of his character, there is reason to believe that the sight of the dazzling presents increased both his haste and his invitation.
【창24:29 MHCC】The making up of the marriage between Isaac and Rebekah is told very particularly. We are to notice God's providence in the common events of human life, and in them to exercise prudence and other graces. Laban went to ask Abraham's servant in, but not till he saw the ear-ring, and bracelet upon his sister's hands. We know Laban's character, by his conduct afterwards, and may think that he would not have been so free to entertain him, if he had not hoped to be well rewarded for it. The servant was intent upon his business. Though he was come off a journey, and come to a good house, he would not eat till he had told his errand. The doing our work, and the fulfilling our trusts, either for God or man, should be preferred by us before our food: it was our Saviour's meat and drink, 요4:34. He tells them the charge his master had given him, with the reason of it. He relates what had happened at the well, to further the proposal, plainly showing the finger of God in it. Those events which to us seem the effect of choice, contrivance, or chance, are “appointed out” of God. This hinders not, but rather encourages the use of all proper means. They freely and cheerfully close with the proposal; and any matter is likely to be comfortable, when it proceeds from the Lord. Abraham's servant thankfully acknowledges the good success he had met with. He was a humble man, and humble men are not ashamed to own their situation in life, whatever it may be. All our temporal concerns are sweet if intermixed with godliness.
【창24:32 JFB】32-49. the man came into the house, &c.—What a beautiful picture of piety, fidelity, and disinterestedness in a servant! He declined all attention to his own comforts till he had told his name and his errand.
【창24:50 JFB】50. Then Laban and Bethuel answered—The brothers conduct all the marriage negotiations, their father being probably dead, and without consulting their sister. Their language seems to indicate they were worshippers of the true God.
【창24:53 JFB】53. And the servant brought forth jewels of silver, and … gold—These are the usual articles, with money, that form a woman's dowry among the pastoral tribes. Rebekah was betrothed and accompanied the servant to Canaan.
【창24:54 MHCC】Abraham's servant, as one that chose his work before his pleasure, was for hastening home. Lingering and loitering no way become a wise and good man who is faithful to his duty. As children ought not to marry without their parents' consent, so parents ought not to marry them without their own. Rebekah consented, not only to go, but to go at once. The goodness of Rebekah's character shows there was nothing wrong in her answer, though it be not agreeable to modern customs among us. We may hope that she had such an idea of the religion and godliness in the family she was to go to, as made her willing to forget her own people and her father's house. Her friends dismiss her with suitable attendants, and with hearty good wishes. They blessed Rebekah. When our relations are entering into a new condition, we ought by prayer to commend them to the blessing and grace of God. Isaac was well employed when he met Rebekah. He went out to take the advantage of a silent evening, and a solitary place, for meditation and prayer; those divine exercises by which we converse with God and our own hearts. Holy souls love retirement; it will do us good to be often alone, if rightly employed; and we are never less alone than when alone. Observe what an affectionate son Isaac was: it was about three years since his mother died, and yet he was not, till now, comforted. See also what an affectionate husband he was to his wife. Dutiful sons promise fair to be affectionate husbands; he that fills up his first station in life with honour, is likely to do the same in those that follow.
【창24:64 JFB】64. she lighted off the camel—If Isaac were walking, it would have been most unmannerly for her to have continued seated; an inferior, if riding, always alights in presence of a person of rank, no exception being made for women.
【창24:65 JFB】65. she took a veil, and covered herself—The veil is an essential part of female dress. In country places it is often thrown aside, but on the appearance of a stranger, it is drawn over the face, as to conceal all but the eyes. In a bride it was a token of her reverence and subjection to her husband.
