■ 창세기 20장
1. 아브라함이 거기서 남방으로 이사하여 가데스와 술 사이 그랄에 우거하며
And Abraham journeyed from thence toward the south country , and dwelled between Kadesh and Shur , and sojourned in Gerar .
2. 그 아내 사라를 자기 누이라 하였으므로 그랄 왕 아비멜렉이 보내어 사라를 취하였더니
And Abraham said of Sarah his wife , She is my sister : and Abimelech king of Gerar sent , and took Sarah .
3. 그 밤에 하나님이 아비멜렉에게 현몽하시고 그에게 이르시되 네가 취한 이 여인을 인하여 네가 죽으리니 그가 남의 아내임이니라
But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night , and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man , for the woman which thou hast taken ; for she is a man’s wife .
4. 아비멜렉이 그 여인을 가까이 아니한 고로 그가 대답하되 주여 주께서 의로운 백성도 멸하시나이까
But Abimelech had not come near her: and he said , Lord , wilt thou slay also a righteous nation ?
5. 그가 나더러 이는 내 누이라고 하지 아니하였나이까 그 여인도 그는 내 오라비라 하였사오니 나는 온전한 마음과 깨끗한 손으로 이렇게 하였나이다
Said he not unto me, She is my sister ? and she , even she herself said , He is my brother : in the integrity of my heart and innocency of my hands have I done this.
6. 하나님이 꿈에 또 그에게 이르시되 네가 온전한 마음으로 이렇게 한 줄을 나도 알았으므로 너를 막아 내게 범죄하지 않게 하였나니 여인에게 가까이 못하게 함이 이 까닭이니라
And God said unto him in a dream , Yea , I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart ; for I also withheld thee from sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her.
7. 이제 그 사람의 아내를 돌려 보내라 그는 선지자라 그가 너를 위하여 기도하리니 네가 살려니와 네가 돌려 보내지 않으면 너와 네게 속한 자가 다 정녕 죽을 줄 알지니라
Now therefore restore the man his wife ; for he is a prophet , and he shall pray for thee , and thou shalt live : and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die , thou, and all that are thine.
8. 아비멜렉이 그 아침에 일찍이 일어나 모든 신복을 불러 그 일을 다 말하여 들리매 그 사람들이 심히 두려워하였더라
Therefore Abimelech rose early in the morning , and called all his servants , and told all these things in their ears : and the men were sore afraid .
9. 아비멜렉이 아브라함을 불러서 그에게 이르되 네가 어찌하여 우리에게 이리 하느냐 내가 무슨 죄를 네게 범하였관대 네가 나와 내 나라로 큰 죄에 빠질 뻔하게 하였느냐 네가 합당치 않은 일을 내게 행하였도다 하고
Then Abimelech called Abraham , and said unto him, What hast thou done unto us? and what have I offended thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin ? thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done .
10. 아비멜렉이 또 아브라함에게 이르되 네가 무슨 의견으로 이렇게 하였느냐
And Abimelech said unto Abraham , What sawest thou , that thou hast done this thing ?
11. 아브라함이 가로되 이곳에서는 하나님을 두려워함이 없으니 내 아내를 인하여 사람이 나를 죽일까 생각하였음이요
And Abraham said , Because I thought , Surely the fear of God is not in this place ; and they will slay me for my wife’s sake .
12. 또 그는 실로 나의 이복 누이로서 내 처가 되었음이니라
And yet indeed she is my sister ; she is the daughter of my father , but not the daughter of my mother ; and she became my wife .
13. 하나님이 나로 내 아비 집을 떠나 두루 다니게 하실 때에 내가 아내에게 말하기를 이후로 우리의 가는 곳마다 그대는 나를 그대의 오라비라 하라 이것이 그대가 내게 베풀 은혜라 하였었노라
And it came to pass, when God caused me to wander from my father’s house , that I said unto her, This is thy kindness which thou shalt shew unto me; at every place whither we shall come , say of me, He is my brother .
14. 아비멜렉이 양과 소와 노비를 취하여 아브라함에게 주고 그 아내 사라도 그에게 돌려보내고
And Abimelech took sheep , and oxen , and menservants , and womenservants , and gave them unto Abraham , and restored him Sarah his wife .
15. 아브라함에게 이르되 내 땅이 네 앞에 있으니 너 보기에 좋은 대로 거하라 하고
And Abimelech said , Behold, my land is before thee : dwell where it pleaseth thee.
16. 사라에게 이르되 내가 은 천개를 네 오라비에게 주어서 그것으로 너와 함께 한 여러 사람 앞에서 네 수치를 풀게 하였노니 네 일이 다 선히 해결되었느니라
And unto Sarah he said , Behold, I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver : behold, he is to thee a covering of the eyes , unto all that are with thee, and with all other: thus she was reproved .
17. 아브라함이 하나님께 기도하매 하나님이 아비멜렉과 그 아내와 여종을 치료하사 생산케 하셨으니
So Abraham prayed unto God : and God healed Abimelech , and his wife , and his maidservants ; and they bare children.
18. 여호와께서 이왕에 아브라함의 아내 사라의 연고로 아비멜렉의 집 모든 태를 닫히셨음이더라
For the Lord had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech , because of Sarah Abraham’s wife .

【창20:1 JFB】창20:1-18. Abraham's Denial of His Wife.
1. Abraham journeyed from thence … and dwelled between Kadesh and Shur—Leaving the encampment, he migrated to the southern border of Canaan. In the neighborhood of Gerar was a very rich and well-watered pasture land.
【창20:1 MHCC】Crooked policy will not prosper: it brings ourselves and others into danger. God gives Abimelech notice of his danger of sin, and his danger of death for his sin. Every wilful sinner is a dead man, but Abimelech pleads ignorance. If our consciences witness, that, however we may have been cheated into a snare, we have not knowingly sinned against God, it will be our rejoicing in the day of evil. It is matter of comfort to those who are honest, that God knows their honesty, and will acknowledge it. It is a great mercy to be hindered from committing sin; of this God must have the glory. But if we have ignorantly done wrong, that will not excuse us, if we knowingly persist in it. He that does wrong, whoever he is, prince or peasant, shall certainly receive for the wrong which he has done, unless he repent, and, if possible, make restitution.
【창20:2 JFB】2. Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister—Fear of the people among whom he was, tempted him to equivocate. His conduct was highly culpable. It was deceit, deliberate and premeditated—there was no sudden pressure upon him—it was the second offense of the kind [see on 창12:13]—it was a distrust of God every way surprising, and it was calculated to produce injurious effects on the heathen around. Its mischievous tendency was not long in being developed.
Abimelech (father-king) … sent and took Sarah—to be one of his wives, in the exercise of a privilege claimed by Eastern sovereigns, already explained (see on 창12:15).
【창20:3 JFB】3. But God came to Abimelech in a dream—In early times a dream was often made the medium of communicating important truths; and this method was adopted for the preservation of Sarah.
【창20:9 JFB】9. Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said … What hast thou done?—In what a humiliating plight does the patriarch now appear—he, a servant of the true God, rebuked by a heathen prince. Who would not rather be in the place of Abimelech than of the honored but sadly offending patriarch! What a dignified attitude is that of the king—calmly and justly reproving the sin of the patriarch, but respecting his person and heaping coals of fire on his head by the liberal presents made to him.
【창20:9 MHCC】See here much to blame, even in the father of the faithful. Mark his distrust of God, his undue care about life, his intent to deceive. He also threw temptation in the way of others, caused affliction to them, exposed himself and Sarah to just rebukes, and yet attempted an excuse. These things are written for our warning, not for us to imitate. Even Abraham hath not whereof to glory. He cannot be justified by his works, but must be indebted for justification, to that righteousness which is upon all and unto all them that believe. We must not condemn all as hypocrites who fall into sin, if they do not continue in it. But let the unhumbled and impenitent take heed that they do not sin on, thinking that grace may abound. Abimelech, being warned of God, takes the warning; and being truly afraid of sin and its consequences, he rose early to pursue the directions given him.
【창20:11 JFB】11. And Abraham said … I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place—From the horrible vices of Sodom he seems to have taken up the impression that all other cities of Canaan were equally corrupt. There might have been few or none who feared God, but what a sad thing when men of the world show a higher sense of honor and a greater abhorrence of crimes than a true worshipper!
【창20:12 JFB】12. yet indeed she is my sister—(See on 창11:31). What a poor defense Abraham made. The statement absolved him from the charge of direct and absolute falsehood, but he had told a moral untruth because there was an intention to deceive (compare 창12:11-13). "Honesty is always the best policy." Abraham's life would have been as well protected without the fraud as with it: and what shame to himself, what distrust to God, what dishonor to religion might have been prevented! "Let us speak truth every man to his neighbor" [Z전8:16; 엡4:25].
【창20:14 MHCC】We often trouble ourselves, and even are led into temptation and sin, by groundless suspicions; and find the fear of God where we expected it not. Agreements to deceive generally end in shame and sorrow; and restraints from sin, though by suffering, should be thankfully acknowledged. Though the Lord rebuke, yet he will pardon and deliver his people, and he will give them favour in the sight of those with whom they sojourn; and overrule their infirmities, when they are humbled for them, so that they shall prove useful to themselves and others.
