■ 창세기 16장
1. 아브람의 아내 사래는 생산치 못하였고 그에게 한 여종이 있으니 애굽 사람이요 이름은 하갈이라
Now Sarai Abram’s wife bare him no children : and she had an handmaid , an Egyptian , whose name was Hagar .
2. 사래가 아브람에게 이르되 여호와께서 나의 생산을 허락지 아니하셨으니 원컨대 나의 여종과 동침하라 내가 혹 그로 말미암아 자녀를 얻을까 하노라 하매 아브람이 사래의 말을 들으니라
And Sarai said unto Abram , Behold now, the Lord hath restrained me from bearing : I pray thee, go in unto my maid ; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai .
3. 아브람의 아내 사래가 그 여종 애굽 사람 하갈을 가져 그 남편 아브람에게 첩으로 준 때는 아브람이 가나안 땅에 거한지 십 년 후이었더라
And Sarai Abram’s wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian , after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan , and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife .
4. 아브람이 하갈과 동침하였더니 하갈이 잉태하매 그가 자기의 잉태함을 깨닫고 그 여주인을 멸시한지라
And he went in unto Hagar , and she conceived : and when she saw that she had conceived , her mistress was despised in her eyes .
5. 사래가 아브람에게 이르되 나의 받는 욕은 당신이 받아야 옳도다 내가 나의 여종을 당신의 품에 두었거늘 그가 자기의 잉태함을 깨닫고 나를 멸시하니 당신과 나 사이에 여호와께서 판단하시기를 원하노라
And Sarai said unto Abram , My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom ; and when she saw that she had conceived , I was despised in her eyes : the Lord judge between me and thee.
6. 아브람이 사래에게 이르되 그대의 여종은 그대의 수중에 있으니 그대의 눈에 좋은 대로 그에게 행하라 하매 사래가 하갈을 학대하였더니 하갈이 사래의 앞에서 도망하였더라
But Abram said unto Sarai , Behold, thy maid is in thy hand ; do to her as it pleaseth thee . And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face .
7. 여호와의 사자가 광야의 샘 곁 곧 술 길 샘물 곁에서 그를 만나
And the angel of the Lord found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness , by the fountain in the way to Shur .
8. 가로되 사래의 여종 하갈아 네가 어디서 왔으며 어디로 가느냐 그가 가로되 나는 나의 여주인 사래를 피하여 도망하나이다
And he said , Hagar , Sarai’s maid , whence camest thou ? and whither wilt thou go ? And she said , I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai .
9. 여호와의 사자가 그에게 이르되 네 여주인에게로 돌아가서 그 수하에 복종하라
And the angel of the Lord said unto her, Return to thy mistress , and submit thyself under her hands .
10. 여호와의 사자가 또 그에게 이르되 내가 네 자손으로 크게 번성하여 그 수가 많아 셀 수 없게 하리라
And the angel of the Lord said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly , that it shall not be numbered for multitude .
11. 여호와의 사자가 또 그에게 이르되 네가 잉태하였은즉 아들을 낳으리니 그 이름을 이스마엘이라 하라 이는 여호와께서 네 고통을 들으셨음이니라
And the angel of the Lord said unto her, Behold , thou art with child , and shalt bear a son , and shalt call his name Ishmael ; because the Lord hath heard thy affliction .
12. 그가 사람 중에 들나귀 같이 되리니 그 손이 모든 사람을 치겠고 모든 사람의 손이 그를 칠지며 그가 모든 형제의 동방에서 살리라 하니라
And he will be a wild man ; his hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren .
13. 하갈이 자기에게 이르신 여호와의 이름을 감찰하시는 하나님이라 하였으니 이는 내가 어떻게 여기서 나를 감찰하시는 하나님을 뵈었는고 함이라
And she called the name of the Lord that spake unto her, Thou God seest me : for she said , Have I also here looked after him that seeth me ?
14. 이러므로 그 샘을 브엘라해로이라 불렀으며 그것이 가데스와 베렛 사이에 있더라
Wherefore the well was called Beer–lahai–roi ; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered .
15. 하갈이 아브람의 아들을 낳으매 아브람이 하갈의 낳은 그 아들을 이름하여 이스마엘이라 하였더라
And Hagar bare Abram a son : and Abram called his son’s name , which Hagar bare , Ishmael .
16. 하갈이 아브람에게 이스마엘을 낳을 때에 아브람이 팔십육 세이었더라
And Abram was fourscore and six years old , when Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram .

【창16:1 JFB】창16:1-16. Bestowment of Hagar.
1. Now, Sarai … had a handmaid—a female slave—one of those obtained in Egypt.
【창16:1 MHCC】Sarai, no longer expecting to have children herself, proposed to Abram to take another wife, whose children she might; her slave, whose children would be her property. This was done without asking counsel of the Lord. Unbelief worked, God's almighty power was forgotten. It was a bad example, and a source of manifold uneasiness. In every relation and situation in life there is some cross for us to bear: much of the exercise of faith consists in patiently submitting, in waiting the Lord's time, and using only those means which he appoints for the removal of the cross. Foul temptations may have very fair pretences, and be coloured with that which is very plausible. Fleshly wisdom puts us out of God's way. This would not be the case, if we would ask counsel of God by his word and by prayer, before we attempt that which is doubtful.
【창16:3 JFB】3. Sarai … gave her to … Abram to be his wife—"Wife" is here used to describe an inferior, though not degrading, relation, in countries where polygamy prevails. In the case of these female slaves, who are the personal property of his lady, being purchased before her marriage or given as a special present to her, no one can become the husband's secondary wife without her mistress consent or permission. This usage seems to have prevailed in patriarchal times; and Hagar, Sarai's slave, of whom she had the entire right of disposing, was given by her mistress' spontaneous offer, to be the secondary wife of Abram, in the hope of obtaining the long-looked-for heir. It was a wrong step—indicating a want of simple reliance on God—and Sarai was the first to reap the bitter fruits of her device.
【창16:4 MHCC】Abram's unhappy marriage to Hagar very soon made a great deal of mischief. We may thank ourselves for the guilt and grief that follow us, when we go out of the way of our duty. See it in this case, Passionate people often quarrel with others, for things of which they themselves must bear the blame. Sarai had given her maid to Abram, yet she cries out, My wrong be upon thee. That is never said wisely, which pride and anger put into our mouths. Those are not always in the right, who are most loud and forward in appealing to God: such rash and bold imprecations commonly speak guilt and a bad cause. Hagar forgot that she herself had first given the provocation, by despising her mistress. Those that suffer for their faults, ought to bear it patiently, 벧전2:20.

And Sarai said … My wrong be upon thee—Bursts of temper, or blows, as the original may bear, took place till at length Hagar, perceiving the hopelessness of maintaining the unequal strife, resolved to escape from what had become to her in reality, as well as in name, a house of bondage.
【창16:7 JFB】7. And the angel of the Lord found her by a fountain—This well, pointed out by tradition, lay on the side of the caravan road, in the midst of Shur, a sandy desert on the west of Arabia-Petræa, to the extent of a hundred fifty miles, between Palestine and Egypt. By taking that direction, she seems to have intended to return to her relatives in that country. Nothing but pride, passion, and sullen obstinacy, could have driven any solitary person to brave the dangers of such an inhospitable wild; and she would have died, had not the timely appearance and words of the angel recalled her to reflection and duty.
【창16:7 MHCC】Hagar was out of her place, and out of the way of her duty, and going further astray, when the Angel found her. It is a great mercy to be stopped in a sinful way, either by conscience or by providence. Whence comest thou? Consider that thou art running from duty, and the privileges thou wast blest with in Abram's tent. It is good to live in a religious family, which those ought to consider who have this advantage. Whither wilt thou go? Thou art running into sin; if Hagar return to Egypt, she will return to idol gods, and into danger in the wilderness through which she must travel. Recollecting who we are, would often teach us our duty. Inquiring whence we came, would show us our sin and folly. Considering whither we shall go, discovers our danger and misery. And those who leave their space and duty, must hasten their return, how mortifying soever it be. The declaration of the Angel, “I will,” shows this Angel was the eternal Word and Son of God. Hagar could not but admire the Lord's mercy, and feel, Have I, who am so unworthy, been favoured with a gracious visit from the Lord? She was brought to a better temper, returned, and by her behaviour softened Sarai, and received more gentle treatment. Would that we were always suitably impressed with this thought, Thou God seest me!
【창16:11 JFB】11. Ishmael—Like other Hebrew names, this had a signification, and it is made up of two words—"God hears." The reason is explained.
【창16:12 JFB】12. he will be a wild man—literally, "a wild ass man," expressing how the wildness of Ishmael and his descendants resembles that of the wild ass.
his hand will be against every man—descriptive of the rude, turbulent, and plundering character of the Arabs.
dwell in the presence of all his brethren—dwell, that is, pitch tents; and the meaning is that they maintain their independence in spite of all attempts to extirpate or subdue them.
【창16:13 JFB】13. called the name—common in ancient times to name places from circumstances; and the name given to this well was a grateful recognition of God's gracious appearance in the hour of Hagar's distress.
