1. 내 아들아 네가 만일 이웃을 위하여 담보하며 타인을 위하여 보증하였으면

  My son , if thou be surety for thy friend , if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger ,

 

2. 네 입의 말로 네가 얽혔으며 네 입의 말로 인하여 잡히게 되었느니라

  Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth , thou art taken with the words of thy mouth .

 

3. 내 아들아 네가 네 이웃의 손에 빠졌은즉 이같이 하라 너는 곧 가서 겸손히 네 이웃에게 간구하여 스스로 구원하되

  Do this now , my son , and deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend ; go , humble thyself, and make sure thy friend .

 

4. 네 눈으로 잠들게 하지 말며 눈꺼풀로 감기게 하지 말고

  Give not sleep to thine eyes , nor slumber to thine eyelids .

 

5. 노루가 사냥꾼의 손에서 벗어나는 것 같이 새가 그물 치는 자의 손에서 벗어나는 것 같이 스스로 구원하라

  Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler .

 

6. 게으른 자여 개미에게로 가서 그 하는 것을 보고 지혜를 얻으라

  Go to the ant , thou sluggard ; consider her ways , and be wise :

 

7. 개미는 두령도 없고 간역자도 없고 주권자도 없으되

  Which having no guide , overseer , or ruler ,

 

8. 먹을 것을 여름 동안에 예비하며 추수 때에 양식을 모으느니라

  Provideth her meat in the summer , and gathereth her food in the harvest .

 

9. 게으른 자여 네가 어느 때까지 눕겠느냐 네가 어느 때에 잠이 깨어 일어나겠느나

  How long wilt thou sleep , O sluggard ? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep ?

 

10. 좀더 자자, 좀더 졸자, 손을 모으고 좀더 눕자 하면

  Yet a little sleep , a little slumber , a little folding of the hands to sleep :

 

11. 네 빈궁이 강도 같이 오며 네 곤핍이 군사 같이 이르리라

  So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth , and thy want as an armed man .

 

12. 불량하고 악한 자는 그 행동에 궤휼한 입을 벌리며

  A naughty person , a wicked man , walketh with a froward mouth .

 

13. 눈짓을 하며 발로 뜻을 보이며 손가락질로 알게 하며

  He winketh with his eyes , he speaketh with his feet , he teacheth with his fingers ;

 

14. 그 마음에 패역을 품으며 항상 악을 꾀하여 다툼을 일으키는 자라

  Frowardness is in his heart , he deviseth mischief continually ; he soweth discord .

 

15. 그러므로 그 재앙이 갑자기 임한즉 도움을 얻지 못하고 당장에 패망하리라

  Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly ; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy .

 

16. 여호와의 미워하시는 것 곧 그 마음에 싫어하시는 것이 육 칠 가지니

  These six things doth the Lord hate : yea, seven are an abomination unto him :

 

17. 곧 교만한 눈과 거짓된 혀와 무죄한 자의 피를 흘리는 손과

  A proud look , a lying tongue , and hands that shed innocent blood ,

 

18. 악한 계교를 꾀하는 마음과 빨리 악으로 달려가는 발과

  An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations , feet that be swift in running to mischief ,

 

19. 거짓을 말하는 망령된 증인과 및 형제 사이를 이간하는 자니라

  A false witness that speaketh lies , and he that soweth discord among brethren .

 

20. 내 아들아 네 아비의 명령을 지키며 네 어미의 법을 떠나지 말고

  My son , keep thy father’s commandment , and forsake not the law of thy mother :

 

21. 그것을 항상 네 마음에 새기며 네 목에 매라

  Bind them continually upon thine heart , and tie them about thy neck .

 

22. 그것이 너의 다닐 때에 너를 인도하며 너의 잘 때에 너를 보호하며 너의 깰 때에 너로 더불어 말하리니

  When thou goest , it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest , it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest , it shall talk with thee.

 

23. 대저 명령은 등불이요 법은 빛이요 훈계의 책망은 곧 생명의 길이라

  For the commandment is a lamp ; and the law is light ; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life :

 

24. 이것이 너를 지켜서 악한 계집에게, 이방 계집의 혀로 호리는 말에 빠지지 않게 하리라

  To keep thee from the evil woman , from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman .

 

25. 네 마음에 그 아름다운 색을 탐하지 말며 그 눈꺼풀에 홀리지 말라

  Lust not after her beauty in thine heart ; neither let her take thee with her eyelids .

 

26. 음녀로 인하여 사람이 한조각 떡만 남게 됨이며 음란한 계집은 귀한 생명을 사냥함이니라

  For by means of a whorish woman a man is brought to a piece of bread : and the adulteress will hunt for the precious life .

 

27. 사람이 불을 품에 품고야 어찌 그 옷이 타지 아니하겠으며

  Can a man take fire in his bosom , and his clothes not be burned ?

 

28. 사람이 숯불을 밟고야 어찌 그 발이 데지 아니하겠느냐

  Can one go upon hot coals , and his feet not be burned ?

 

29. 남의 아내와 통간하는 자도 이와 같을 것이라 무릇 그를 만지기만 하는 자도 죄 없게 되지 아니하리라

  So he that goeth in to his neighbour’s wife ; whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent .

 

30. 도적이 만일 주릴 때에 배를 채우려고 도적질하면 사람이 그를 멸시치는 아니하려니와

  Men do not despise a thief , if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry ;

 

31. 들키면 칠 배를 갚아야 하리니 심지어 자기 집에 있는 것을 다 내어 주게 되리라

  But if he be found , he shall restore sevenfold ; he shall give all the substance of his house .

 

32. 부녀와 간음하는 자는 무지한 자라 이것을 행하는 자는 자기의 영혼을 망하게 하며

  But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding : he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul .

 

33. 상함과 능욕을 받고 부끄러움을 씻을 수 없게 되나니

  A wound and dishonour shall he get ; and his reproach shall not be wiped away .

 

34. 그 남편이 투기함으로 분노하여 원수를 갚는 날에 용서하지 아니하고

  For jealousy is the rage of a man : therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance .

 

35. 아무 벌금도 돌아 보지 아니하며 많은 선물을 줄지라도 듣지 아니하리라

  He will not regard any ransom ; neither will he rest content , though thou givest many gifts .

【잠6:1 JFB】잠6:1-35. After admonitions against suretyship and sloth (compare 잠6:6-8), the character and fate of the wicked generally are set forth, and the writer (잠6:20-35) resumes the warnings against incontinence, pointing out its certain and terrible results. This train of thought seems to intimate the kindred of these vices.

【잠6:1 CWC】These chapters begin with reminiscence. A father is reciting to a son the precepts taught him by his father in his youth, and which cover chapter four. Chapter five is a warning against the evil woman. Chapter six deals with suretyship, indolence, malice and violence, while chapter seven returns to the theme of chapter five.
In the first-named chapter occurs the beautiful illustration of Hebrew rhythm to which attention was called in Lesson 1; and following it we find in verses 18 and 23, two of as oft-quoted texts as are in the whole book.
The "just" man, as usual in the Bible, is he who is justified by faith and walks with God in a holy obedience. On him the Sun of Righteousness shines. His new life is at first like the morning light, a struggle between the darkness and the dawn. Ere long the doubt vanishes, and morning is unequivocally declared. The counterpart is fitted to overawe the boldest heart, "The way of the wicked is as darkness, they know not at what they stumble." The thought is that the darkness is in them and they carry it, an evil heart of unbelief, wherever they go.
As to the other text, notice the fountain -- the heart (v. 23), and then the stream -- the mouth, the eyes, the feet (vv. 24-27). The heart is kept by prayer and the Word of God, and then the life issuing from it is what it ought to be. The speech is pure, and true and potent. There are no secret longings and side glances after forbidden things, and the steps in matters of business, society, and the home are all ordered of the Lord. (Compare Christ's words. 마15:18-20).
Family Joys.
We have spoken of chapter five as a warning against the evil woman, which is true of its first half; but the reader will observe how the warning is accentuated by the contrast of the pure and happy home life in the second half, beginning at verse 15. The former is a dark back ground to bring out the latter's beauty. The keynote of the first half is "remove far from her." She is deceitful (vv. 3, 4), unstable (v. 6) and cruel (v. 9). To associate with her means waste of property and health (vv. 8, 9), and at the last remorse (vv. 12-14).
The home in comparison is a pure and well-guarded well (v. 15). Read verses 16 and 17 in the Revised Version, and observe a husband's duty toward his wife (v. 18). Let him avoid biting words, neglect, unnecessary absences and the like. And as Paul says (엡5:33), let "the wife see that she reverence her husband."
The suretyship against which we are warned (6:1-5) is of the inconsiderate kind. "That imprudent assumption of such obligations leaving out of account the moral unreliableness of the man involved." The advice is to get the quickest release possible (vv. 3-5). It does not mean that we should not kindly and prudently help a neighbor in financial need, if we can.
The "mother" of verses 20-24 must be one who knows God, for it is the instilling of His Word only in the heart of her child that can produce the results indicated. Observe it is a grown son here referred to as keeping his mother's law.

 

【잠6:1 MHCC】If we live as directed by the word of God, we shall find it profitable even in this present world. We are stewards of our worldly substance, and have to answer to the Lord for our disposal of it; to waste it in rash schemes, or such plans as may entangle us in difficulties and temptations, is wrong. A man ought never to be surety for more than he is able and willing to pay, and can afford to pay, without wronging his family; he ought to look upon every sum he is engaged for, as his own debt. If we must take all this care to get our debts to men forgiven, much more to obtain forgiveness with God. Humble thyself to him, make sure of Christ as thy Friend, to plead for thee; pray earnestly that thy sins may be pardoned, and that thou mayest be kept from going down to the pit.

【잠6:6 MHCC】Diligence in business is every man's wisdom and duty; not so much that he may attain worldly wealth, as that he may not be a burden to others, or a scandal to the church. The ants are more diligent than slothful men. We may learn wisdom from the meanest insects, and be shamed by them. Habits of indolence and indulgence grow upon people. Thus life runs to waste; and poverty, though at first at a distance, gradually draws near, like a traveller; and when it arrives, is like an armed man, too strong to be resisted. All this may be applied to the concerns of our souls. How many love their sleep of sin, and their dreams of worldly happiness! Shall we not seek to awaken such? Shall we not give diligence to secure our own salvation?

【잠6:12 JFB】12. A naughty person—literally, "A man of Belial," or of worthlessness, that is, for good, and so depraved, or wicked (compare 삼상25:25; 30:22, &c.). Idleness and vice are allied. Though indolent in acts, he actively and habitually (walketh) is ill-natured in speech (잠4:24).

 

【잠6:12 MHCC】If the slothful are to be condemned, who do nothing, much more those that do all the ill they can. Observe how such a man is described. He says and does every thing artfully, and with design. His ruin shall come without warning, and without relief. Here is a list of things hateful to God. Those sins are in a special manner provoking to God, which are hurtful to the comfort of human life. These things which God hates, we must hate in ourselves; it is nothing to hate them in others. Let us shun all such practices, and watch and pray against them; and avoid, with marked disapproval, all who are guilty of them, whatever may be their rank.

 

【잠6:13 JFB】13, 14. If, for fear of detection, he does not speak, he uses signs to carry on his intrigues. These signs are still so used in the East.

【잠6:20 MHCC】The word of God has something to say to us upon all occasions. Let not faithful reproofs ever make us uneasy. When we consider how much this sin abounds, how heinous adultery is in its own nature, of what evil consequence it is, and how certainly it destroys the spiritual life in the soul, we shall not wonder that the cautions against it are so often repeated. Let us notice the subjects of this chapter. Let us remember Him who willingly became our Surety, when we were strangers and enemies. And shall Christians, who have such prospects, motives, and examples, be slothful and careless? Shall we neglect what is pleasing to God, and what he will graciously reward? May we closely watch every sense by which poison can enter our minds or affections.
