■ 잠언 4장
1. 아들들아 아비의 훈계를 들으며 명철을 얻기에 주의하라
Hear , ye children , the instruction of a father , and attend to know understanding .
2. 내가 선한 도리를 너희에게 전하노니 내 법을 떠나지 말라
For I give you good doctrine , forsake ye not my law .
3. 나도 내 아버지에게 아들이었었으며 내 어머니 보기에 유약한 외아들이었었노라
For I was my father’s son , tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother .
4. 아버지가 내게 가르쳐 이르기를 내 말을 네 마음에 두라 내 명령을 지키라 그리하면 살리라
He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words : keep my commandments , and live .
5. 지혜를 얻으며 명철을 얻으라 내 입의 말을 잊지 말며 어기지 말라
Get wisdom , get understanding : forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth .
6. 지혜를 버리지 말라 그가 너를 보호하리라 그를 사랑하라 그가 너를 지키리라
Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee.
7. 지혜가 제일이니 지혜를 얻으라 무릇 너의 얻은 것을 가져 명철을 얻을지니라
Wisdom is the principal thing ; therefore get wisdom : and with all thy getting get understanding .
8. 그를 높이라 그리하면 그가 너를 높이 들리라 만일 그를 품으면 그가 너를 영화롭게 하리라
Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour , when thou dost embrace her.
9. 그가 아름다운 관을 네 머리에 두겠고 영화로운 면류관을 네게 주리라 하였느니라
She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace : a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.
10. 내 아들아 들으라 내 말을 받으라 그리하면 네 생명의 해가 길리라
Hear , O my son , and receive my sayings ; and the years of thy life shall be many .
11. 내가 지혜로운 길로 네게 가르쳤으며 정직한 첩경으로 너를 인도하였은즉
I have taught thee in the way of wisdom ; I have led thee in right paths .
12. 다닐 때에 네 걸음이 곤란하지 아니하겠고 달려갈 때에 실족하지 아니하리라
When thou goest , thy steps shall not be straitened ; and when thou runnest , thou shalt not stumble .
13. 훈계를 굳게 잡아 놓치지 말고 지키라 이것이 네 생명이니라
Take fast hold of instruction ; let her not go : keep her; for she is thy life .
14. 사특한 자의 첩경에 들어가지 말며 악인의 길로 다니지 말지어다
Enter not into the path of the wicked , and go not in the way of evil men.
15. 그 길을 피하고 지나가지 말며 돌이켜 떠나갈지어다
Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away .
16. 그들은 악을 행하지 못하면 자지 못하며 사람을 넘어뜨리지 못하면 잠이 오지 아니하며
For they sleep not, except they have done mischief ; and their sleep is taken away , unless they cause some to fall .
17. 불의의 떡을 먹으며 강포의 술을 마심이니라
For they eat the bread of wickedness , and drink the wine of violence .
18. 의인의 길은 돋는 햇볕 같아서 점점 빛나서 원만한 광명에 이르거니와
But the path of the just is as the shining light , that shineth more and more unto the perfect day .
19. 악인의 길은 어둠 같아서 그가 거쳐 넘어져도 그것이 무엇인지 깨닫지 못하느니라
The way of the wicked is as darkness : they know not at what they stumble .
20. 내 아들아 내 말에 주의하며 나의 이르는 것에 네 귀를 기울이라
My son , attend to my words ; incline thine ear unto my sayings .
21. 그것을 네 눈에서 떠나게 말며 네 마음 속에 지키라
Let them not depart from thine eyes ; keep them in the midst of thine heart .
22. 그것은 얻는 자에게 생명이 되며 그 온 육체의 건강이 됨이니라
For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh .
23. 무릇 지킬만한 것보다 더욱 네 마음을 지키라 생명의 근원이 이에서 남이니라
Keep thy heart with all diligence ; for out of it are the issues of life .
24. 궤휼을 네 입에서 버리며 사곡을 네 입술에서 멀리하라
Put away from thee a froward mouth , and perverse lips put far from thee.
25. 네 눈은 바로 보며 네 눈꺼풀은 네 앞을 곧게 살펴
Let thine eyes look right on , and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.
26. 네 발의 행할 첩경을 평탄케 하며 네 모든 길을 든든히 하라
Ponder the path of thy feet , and let all thy ways be established .
27. 우편으로나 좌편으로나 치우치지 말고 네 발을 악에서 떠나게 하라
Turn not to the right hand nor to the left : remove thy foot from evil .

【잠4:1 JFB】잠4:1-27. To an earnest call for attention to his teachings, the writer adds a commendation of wisdom, preceded and enforced by the counsels of his father and teacher. To this he adds a caution (against the devices of the wicked), and a series of exhortations to docility, integrity, and uprightness.

【잠4:1 CWC】These chapters begin with reminiscence. A father is reciting to a son the precepts taught him by his father in his youth, and which cover chapter four. Chapter five is a warning against the evil woman. Chapter six deals with suretyship, indolence, malice and violence, while chapter seven returns to the theme of chapter five.
In the first-named chapter occurs the beautiful illustration of Hebrew rhythm to which attention was called in Lesson 1; and following it we find in verses 18 and 23, two of as oft-quoted texts as are in the whole book.
The "just" man, as usual in the Bible, is he who is justified by faith and walks with God in a holy obedience. On him the Sun of Righteousness shines. His new life is at first like the morning light, a struggle between the darkness and the dawn. Ere long the doubt vanishes, and morning is unequivocally declared. The counterpart is fitted to overawe the boldest heart, "The way of the wicked is as darkness, they know not at what they stumble." The thought is that the darkness is in them and they carry it, an evil heart of unbelief, wherever they go.
As to the other text, notice the fountain -- the heart (v. 23), and then the stream -- the mouth, the eyes, the feet (vv. 24-27). The heart is kept by prayer and the Word of God, and then the life issuing from it is what it ought to be. The speech is pure, and true and potent. There are no secret longings and side glances after forbidden things, and the steps in matters of business, society, and the home are all ordered of the Lord. (Compare Christ's words. 마15:18-20).
Family Joys.
We have spoken of chapter five as a warning against the evil woman, which is true of its first half; but the reader will observe how the warning is accentuated by the contrast of the pure and happy home life in the second half, beginning at verse 15. The former is a dark back ground to bring out the latter's beauty. The keynote of the first half is "remove far from her." She is deceitful (vv. 3, 4), unstable (v. 6) and cruel (v. 9). To associate with her means waste of property and health (vv. 8, 9), and at the last remorse (vv. 12-14).
The home in comparison is a pure and well-guarded well (v. 15). Read verses 16 and 17 in the Revised Version, and observe a husband's duty toward his wife (v. 18). Let him avoid biting words, neglect, unnecessary absences and the like. And as Paul says (엡5:33), let "the wife see that she reverence her husband."
The suretyship against which we are warned (6:1-5) is of the inconsiderate kind. "That imprudent assumption of such obligations leaving out of account the moral unreliableness of the man involved." The advice is to get the quickest release possible (vv. 3-5). It does not mean that we should not kindly and prudently help a neighbor in financial need, if we can.
The "mother" of verses 20-24 must be one who knows God, for it is the instilling of His Word only in the heart of her child that can produce the results indicated. Observe it is a grown son here referred to as keeping his mother's law.
【잠4:1 MHCC】We must look upon our teachers as our fathers: though instruction carry in it reproof and correction, bid it welcome. Solomon's parents loved him, therefore taught him. Wise and godly men, in every age of the world, and rank in society, agree that true wisdom consists in obedience, and is united to happiness. Get wisdom, take pains for it. Get the rule over thy corruptions; take more pains to get this than the wealth of this world. An interest in Christ's salvation is necessary. This wisdom is the one thing needful. A soul without true wisdom and grace is a dead soul. How poor, contemptible, and wretched are those, who, with all their wealth and power, die without getting understanding, without Christ, without hope, and without God! Let us give heed to the sayings of Him who has the words of eternal life. Thus our path will be plain before us: by taking, and keeping fast hold of instruction, we shall avoid being straitened or stumbling.

led thee—literally, "caused thee to tread," as a path (시107:7).
not be straitened—have ample room (시18:36).

【잠4:14 JFB】14. (Compare 시1:1). Avoid all temptations to the beginning of evil.
【잠4:14 MHCC】The way of evil men may seem pleasant, and the nearest way to compass some end; but it is an evil way, and will end ill; if thou love thy God and thy soul, avoid it. It is not said, Keep at a due distance, but at a great distance; never think you can get far enough from it. The way of the righteous is light; Christ is their Way, and he is the Light. The saints will not be perfect till they reach heaven, but there they shall shine as the sun in his strength. The way of sin is as darkness. The way of the wicked is dark, therefore dangerous; they fall into sin, but know not how to avoid it. They fall into trouble, but never seek to know wherefore God contends with them, nor what will be in the end of it. This is the way we are bid to shun. Attentive hearing the word of God, is a good sign of a work of grace begun in the heart, and a good means of carrying it on. There is in the word of God a proper remedy for all diseases of the soul. Keep thy heart with all diligence. We must set a strict guard upon our souls; keep our hearts from doing hurt, and getting hurt. A good reason is given; because out of it are the issues of life. Above all, we should seek from the Lord Jesus that living water, the sanctifying Spirit, issuing forth unto everlasting life. Thus we shall be enabled to put away a froward mouth and perverse lips; our eyes will be turned from beholding vanity, looking straight forward, and walking by the rule of God's word, treading in the steps of our Lord and Master. Lord, forgive the past, and enable us to follow thee more closely for the time to come.
【잠4:16 JFB】16, 17. The reason is found in the character of sinners, whose zeal to do evil is forcibly depicted (잠6:4; 시36:5). They live by flagrant vices (잠1:13). Some prefer to render, "Their bread is wickedness, their drink violence" (compare 욥15:16; 34:7).
【잠4:18 JFB】18, 19. As shining light increases from twilight to noonday splendor, so the course of the just increases in purity, but that of the wicked is as thickest darkness, in which one knows not on what he stumbles.
