My son , forget not my law ; but let thine heart keep my commandments :
For length of days , and long life , and peace , shall they add to thee.
Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck ; write them upon the table of thine heart :
So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man .
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart ; and lean not unto thine own understanding .
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths .
Be not wise in thine own eyes : fear the Lord , and depart from evil .
It shall be health to thy navel , and marrow to thy bones .
Honour the Lord with thy substance , and with the firstfruits of all thine increase :
So shall thy barns be filled with plenty , and thy presses shall burst out with new wine .
My son , despise not the chastening of the Lord ; neither be weary of his correction :
For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth ; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth .
Happy is the man that findeth wisdom , and the man that getteth understanding .
For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver , and the gain thereof than fine gold .
She is more precious than rubies : and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.
Length of days is in her right hand ; and in her left hand riches and honour .
Her ways are ways of pleasantness , and all her paths are peace .
She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.
The Lord by wisdom hath founded the earth ; by understanding hath he established the heavens .
By his knowledge the depths are broken up , and the clouds drop down the dew .
My son , let not them depart from thine eyes : keep sound wisdom and discretion :
So shall they be life unto thy soul , and grace to thy neck .
Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely , and thy foot shall not stumble .
When thou liest down , thou shalt not be afraid : yea, thou shalt lie down , and thy sleep shall be sweet .
Be not afraid of sudden fear , neither of the desolation of the wicked , when it cometh .
For the Lord shall be thy confidence , and shall keep thy foot from being taken .
Withhold not good from them to whom it is due , when it is in the power of thine hand to do it.
Say not unto thy neighbour , Go , and come again , and to morrow I will give ; when thou hast it by thee.
Devise not evil against thy neighbour , seeing he dwelleth securely by thee.
Strive not with a man without cause , if he have done thee no harm .
Envy thou not the oppressor , and choose none of his ways .
For the froward is abomination to the Lord : but his secret is with the righteous .
The curse of the Lord is in the house of the wicked : but he blesseth the habitation of the just .
Surely he scorneth the scorners : but he giveth grace unto the lowly .
The wise shall inherit glory : but shame shall be the promotion of fools .

【잠3:1 JFB】잠3:1-35. The study of truth commended. God must be feared, honored, and trusted, and filial submission, under chastisement, exhibited. The excellence of wisdom urged and illustrated by its place in the divine counsels. Piety enforced by a contrast of the destiny of the righteous and the wicked.
1. law [and] commandments—all divine instructions (see on 시119:1 and 시119:4).
let thine heart keep—or sincerely observe (잠4:13; 5:2).
【잠3:1 CWC】The nature of this book makes divisions of its chapters rather arbitrary, and ours may not always be the best, but it is hoped it may prove useful in some degree. The opening of chapter four suggests a new beginning, for which reason we conclude this lesson at the close of chapter three.
It begins with an advertisement (1:1-6), in which mention is made of the author (v. 1), the object of the book (vv. 2, 3), and its great value (vv. 4-6).
Then follows its theme, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge" (v. 7), of which the remainder of the lesson is a development or exposition. "Beginning" is rendered in the margin of the Revised Version "chief part." "The fear of the Lord" means a right state of heart towards God as opposed to the condition of an unconverted man. Put the two ideas together, and we learn that the chief part of all knowledge is to be right with God. In working out of the thought:
1. The teacher exhorts his "son" or pupil, to avoid vice (1:8-19).
2. He shows the ruinous conduct of the unwise, a warning placed on the lips of wisdom personified (1:20-33).
3. This warning is accentuated by contrasting the consequences of obedience and a striving after wisdom (2:1-3).
4. The Lord is shown as the protector of those who are wise in this sense
(3:19-26).
5. The division concludes with an admonition to charity and justice (3: 27-35).
Practical and Doctrinal Remarks.
In this part of the lesson we call attention to particular verses for explanation or application, acknowledging indebtedness to Arnot's "Laws From Heaven for Life on Earth."
1:23 is a text for a revival sermon, containing a command and a promise joined, like 빌2:12. It teaches in one sentence those two seemingly contradictory doctrines, the sovereignty of God, and the free agency of man. It is when we turn at God's reproof that He pours out His Spirit; though it be also true that unless His Spirit is poured out we can not turn.
1:24-32 offers an opportunity to preach on God's mercy to a rebellious people. He calls, stretches out His hands, counsels, and administers reproof. On the other hand men refuse, disregard, set at nought, reject. The natural consequence follows; sowing disobedience they reap judgment. That judgment consists in calling on God and getting no answer, seeking diligently and not finding Him. The passage closes with a promise to them that hearken -- deliverance from death at last and freedom from fear now.
2:1-9 suggests Christ's words in 눅11:9, "Seek, and ye shall find." The seeking is in verses 1-4, the finding in verses 5-9.
2:10-22 is an outline of "the way of evil" (v. 12, R. V.). The first step is "speaking froward things"; the second, leaving "the paths of uprightness," the feet soon follow the tongue (v. 13); the third, walking "in the ways of darkness" (v. 13); the fourth, rejoicing "to do evil" (v. 14); fifth, delighting "in the frowardness of the wicked," we can not take pleasure in doing wickedness without finding pleasure in seeing others do it; sixth, to complete the picture, the evil person here particularly in mind is seen to be a woman (vv. 16-22).
3:5, 6 presents one of the strongest promises of the Bible -- the first text from which the author of this commentary ever preached. Note how we are to trust, "with all thine heart." God complains as much of a divided allegiance as of none. Note the extent of our trust, "in all thy ways." "Few will refuse to acknowledge a superintending providence at certain times, and in certain operations that are counted great," but God wants us to confide in Him in the little, close, and kindly things.
3:11, 12 is quoted in 히12:5, 6. Note there how the inspired writer interprets the phrase, "My son." The speaker in Proverbs may have been addressing a pupil merely, but the Holy Spirit through him, "speaketh unto you as unto sons."
"Despise not," means do not make light of chastening or cast it aside as if it had no meaning for you; "faint not" touches the opposite extreme, do not be driven to despair by the experience. "The middle way is the path of safety."
3:13-20 is a description and appreciation of wisdom, which throughout this book means piety or godliness. In Ecclestiastes it is science. And yet piety or godliness hardly expresses it in the highest sense in which it is sometimes found, where as for example in these verses, it suggests Christ. He is the wisdom of God as we learn in the New Testament, who, by the Holy Spirit through the holy Scriptures is made unto us wisdom (1 Cor. 2). Such wisdom can not be planned, much less created by us, but must be "found" or "gotten" (v. 13).
Observe the figures describing it. It is precious merchandise (vv. 14, 15). It is a way of honor, pleasantness and peace (vv. 16, 17). It is a tree of life (v. 18).
【잠3:1 MHCC】In the way of believing obedience to God's commandments health and peace may commonly be enjoyed; and though our days may not be long upon earth, we shall live for ever in heaven. Let not mercy and truth forsake thee; God's mercy in promising, and his truth in performing: live up to them, keep up thine interest in them, and take the comfort of them. We must trust in the Lord with all our hearts, believing he is able and wise to do what is best. Those who know themselves, find their own understandings a broken reed, which, if they lean upon, will fail. Do not design any thing but what is lawful, and beg God to direct thee in every case, though it may seem quite plain. In all our ways that prove pleasant, in which we gain our point, we must acknowledge God with thankfulness. In all our ways that prove uncomfortable, and that are hedged up with thorns, we must acknowledge him with submission. It is promised, He shall direct thy paths; so that thy way shall be safe and good, and happy at last.
【잠3:2 JFB】2. length … life—often promised as blessings (시21:4; 91:16).
peace—includes prosperity (시125:5).
add—abound to thee.
【잠3:3 JFB】3. mercy and truth—God's faithfulness to His promises is often expressed by these terms (시25:10; 57:3). As attributes of men, they express integrity in a wide sense (잠16:6; 20:28).
bind … write … heart—outwardly adorn and inwardly govern motives.
【잠3:4 JFB】4. favour—grace, amiability (잠22:11; 시45:2); united with this,
a good understanding—(Compare Margin), a discrimination, which secures success.
in the sight … man—such as God and man approve.
【잠3:5 JFB】5. Trust … heart—This is the center and marrow of true wisdom (잠22:19; 28:25). The positive duty has its corresponding negation in the admonition against self-confidence.
【잠3:6 JFB】6. ways—(시1:1).
acknowledge—by seeking His wise aid (잠16:3; 시37:5; 렘9:23, 24).
direct—literally, "make plain" (compare 히12:13).
【잠3:7 JFB】7. (Compare 잠27:2; 롬12:16).
fear … evil—reverentially regarding His law.
【잠3:7 MHCC】There is not a greater enemy to the fear of the Lord in the heart, than self-conceit of our own wisdom. The prudence and sobriety which religion teaches, tend not only to the health of the soul, but to the health of the body. Worldly wealth is but poor substance, yet, such as it is, we must honour God with it; and those that do good with what they have, shall have more to do more good with. Should the Lord visit us with trials and sickness, let us not forget that the exhortation speaks to us as to children, for our good. We must not faint under an affliction, be it ever so heavy and long, not be driven to despair, or use wrong means for relief. The father corrects the son whom he loves, because he loves him, and desires that he may be wise and good. Afflictions are so far from doing God's children any hurt, that, by the grace of God, they promote their holiness.
【잠3:8 JFB】8. It—This conduct.
health—(Compare Margin).
to thy navel—for all the organs of nourishment.
marrow—(Compare Margin).
bones—frame of body. True piety promotes bodily health.
【잠3:9 JFB】9, 10. (Compare 잠11:25; 출23:19; 신18:4; 사32:8; 고후9:13).
【잠3:10 JFB】10. presses—or wine fats (Joe 2:24; 3:13).
【잠3:11 JFB】11, 12. The true intent of afflictions considered; they do not contradict the assertion of the blessed state of the pious (욥5:17; 히12:5, 6).
【잠3:12 JFB】12. he delighteth—or receiveth as denoting reconciliation regarding the offense which produced chastisement.
【잠3:13 JFB】13. findeth—literally, "reaches," or "obtains by seeking."
getteth—literally, "draws out," as metals by digging.
【잠3:13 MHCC】No precious jewels or earthly treasures are worthy to be compared with true wisdom, whether the concerns of time or eternity be considered. We must make wisdom our business; we must venture all in it, and be willing to part with all for it. This Wisdom is the Lord Jesus Christ and his salvation, sought and obtained by faith and prayer. Were it not for unbelief, remaining sinfulness, and carelessness, we should find all our ways pleasantness, and our paths peace, for his are so; but we too often step aside from them, to our own hurt and grief. Christ is that Wisdom, by whom the worlds were made, and still are in being; happy are those to whom he is made of God wisdom. He has wherewithal to make good all his promises.
【잠3:14 JFB】14, 15. The figure of 잠3:13 carried out.
it—that is, wisdom.
merchandise of silver—acquisition by trading.
fine gold—dug gold, solid as a nugget.
【잠3:15 JFB】15. rubies—gems, or pearls.
【잠3:16 JFB】16, 17. Wisdom personified as bringing the best blessings (compare 마6:33; 딤전4:8).
【잠3:17 JFB】17. Her ways—such as she directs us to take.
【잠3:18 JFB】18. Wisdom allegorized as
a tree of life—(창2:9; 3:22) whose fruit preserves life, gives all that makes living a blessing.
【잠3:19 JFB】19, 20. The place of wisdom in the economy of creation and providence commends it to men, who, in proportion to their finite powers, may possess this invaluable attribute, and are thus encouraged by the divine example of its use to seek its possession.
【잠3:21 JFB】21. sound wisdom—(compare 잠2:7).
let … eyes—that is, these words of instruction.
【잠3:21 MHCC】Let us not suffer Christ's words to depart from us, but keep sound wisdom and discretion; then shall we walk safely in his ways. The natural life, and all that belongs to it, shall be under the protection of God's providence; the spiritual life, and all its interests, under the protection of his grace, so that we shall be kept from falling into sin or trouble.
【잠3:22 JFB】22-24. assign reasons in their value for happiness and ornament, guidance and support in dangers, both when waking and sleeping.
【잠3:25 JFB】25. Be not—or, "You shall not be."
sudden fear—what causes it (잠1:27), any unlooked-for evil (시46:3; 91:12; 벧전3:14).
desolation—(잠1:27).
【잠3:26 JFB】26. The reason; such as are objects of God's favor.
be thy confidence—literally, "in thy confidence," in the source of thy strength (compare 나3:9, for the same construction, Hebrew).
【잠3:27 JFB】27, 28. Promptly fulfil all obligations both of justice and charity (compare 약2:15, 16).
【잠3:27 MHCC】Our business is to observe the precepts of Christ, and to copy his example; to do justice, to love mercy, and to beware of covetousness; to be ready for every good work, avoiding needless strife, and bearing evils, if possible, rather than seeking redress by law. It will be found there is little got by striving. Let us not envy prosperous oppressors; far be it from the disciples of Christ to choose any of their ways. These truths may be despised by the covetous and luxurious, but everlasting contempt will be the portion of such scorners, while Divine favour is shown to the humble believer.
【잠3:29 JFB】29, 30. Do not abuse confidence and avoid litigation.
【잠3:31 JFB】31. oppressor—or man of mischief. The destiny of successful evildoers warns against desiring their lot (시37:1, 2, 35, 36).
【잠3:32 JFB】32-35. Reasons for the warning.
froward—(잠2:15).
secret … righteous—in their communion (암3:7).
【잠3:33 JFB】33. curse … wicked—It abides with them, and will be manifested.
【잠3:34 JFB】34. The retribution of sinners, as in 시18:26.
