【잠29:1 JFB】잠29:1-27.
1. hardeneth … neck—obstinately refuses counsel (왕하17:14; 느9:16).
destroyed—literally, "shivered" or "utterly broken to pieces."
without remedy—literally, "without healing" or repairing.
【잠29:1 CWC】This division of the book is introduced in the first verse of chapter 25, as the "proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah, king of Judah, copied out." What these words mean it is difficult to say, except in the general sense that the teachers of Hezekiah's period selected and gathered together wise sayings that had been written, or handed down orally in previous generations. They may have been those of Solomon only, and yet his name may be attached to them simply because they were now made part of his general collection. They contain admonitions to the fear of God and righteousness, addressed partly to kings, and yet also to their subjects. They also contain warnings against evil conduct of various kinds, (c. 26); against conceit and arrogance (c. 27); against unlawful dealings, especially of the rich with the poor (c. 28); and against stubbornness and insubordination, (c. 29).
【잠29:1 MHCC】If God wounds, who can heal? The word of God warns all to flee from the wrath to come, to the hope set before us in Jesus Christ.
【잠29:2 JFB】2. (Compare 잠11:10; 28:28).
in authority—(Compare Margin), increased in power.
【잠29:2 MHCC】The people have cause to rejoice or mourn, as their rulers are righteous or wicked.
【잠29:3 JFB】3. (Compare 잠4:6, 7; 10:1, &c.).
【잠29:3 MHCC】Divine wisdom best keeps us from ruinous lusts.
【잠29:4 JFB】4. by judgment—that is, righteous decisions, opposed to those procured by gifts (compare 잠28:21), by which good government is perverted.
land—for nation.
【잠29:4 MHCC】The Lord Jesus is the King who will minister true judgment to the people.
【잠29:5 JFB】5. (Compare 잠26:28).
spreadeth … feet—By misleading him as to his real character, the flatterer brings him to evil, prepared by himself or others.
【잠29:5 MHCC】Flatterers put men off their guard, which betrays them into foolish conduct.
【잠29:6 JFB】6. In—or, "By"
the transgression—he is brought into difficulty (잠12:13), but the righteous go on prospering, and so sing or rejoice.
【잠29:6 MHCC】Transgressions always end in vexations. Righteous men walk at liberty, and walk in safety.
【잠29:7 JFB】7. considereth—literally, "knows," as 시1:6.
the cause—that is, in courts of justice (compare 잠29:14). The voluntary neglect of it by the wicked (잠28:27) occasions oppression.
【잠29:7 MHCC】This verse is applicable to compassion for the distress of the poor, and the unfeeling disregard shown by the wicked.
【잠29:8 JFB】8. Scornful men—those who contemptuously disregard God's law.
bring—(Compare Margin), kindle strife.
turn away wrath—that is, "abate wrath."
【잠29:8 MHCC】The scornful mock at things sacred and serious. Men who promote religion, which is true wisdom, turn away the wrath of God.
【잠29:9 JFB】9. contendeth—that is, in law.
whether … laugh—The fool, whether angry or good-humored, is unsettled; or referring the words to the wise man, the sense is, that all his efforts, severe or gentle, are unavailing to pacify the fool.
【잠29:9 MHCC】If a wise man dispute with a conceited wrangler, he will be treated with anger or ridicule; and no good is done.
【잠29:10 JFB】10. bloodthirsty—(Compare Margin), murderers (시5:6; 26:9).
hate, &c.—(잠1:11; 창3:4).
seek … soul—that is, to preserve it.
【잠29:10 MHCC】Christ told his disciples that they should be hated of all men. The just, whom the blood-thirsty hate, gladly do any thing for their salvation.
【잠29:11 JFB】11. (Compare 잠12:16; 16:32).
mind—or, "spirit," for anger or any ill passion which the righteous restrain.
【잠29:11 MHCC】He is a fool who tells every thing he knows, and can keep no counsel.
【잠29:12 JFB】12. His servants imitate him.

【잠29:13 JFB】13. (Compare 잠22:2).
deceitful man—literally, "man of vexations," an exactor.
the Lord … their eyes—sustains their lives (삼상14:27; 시13:3); that is, both depend on Him, and He will do justice.

【잠29:14 JFB】14. (Compare 잠20:28; 25:5). Such is the character of the King of kings (시72:4, 12).
【잠29:14 MHCC】The rich will look to themselves, but the poor and needy the prince must defend and plead for.
【잠29:15 JFB】15. (Compare 잠13:24; 23:13).
【잠29:15 MHCC】Parents must consider the benefit of due correction, and the mischief of undue indulgence.
【잠29:16 JFB】16. (Compare 잠29:2, 12; 시12:1-8).
shall see … fall—and triumph in it (시37:34-38; 58:10, 11).
【잠29:16 MHCC】Let not the righteous have their faith and hope shocked by the increase of sin and sinners, but let them wait with patience.
【잠29:17 JFB】17. (Compare 잠29:3, 15; 잠19:18).
give thee rest—peace and quiet (compare 잠29:9).
【잠29:17 MHCC】Children must not be suffered to go without rebuke when they do amiss.
【잠29:18 JFB】18. no vision—instruction in God's truth, which was by prophets, through visions (삼상3:1).
people perish—(Compare Margin), are deprived of moral restraints.
keepeth the law—has, and observes, instruction (잠14:11, 34; 시19:11).
【잠29:18 MHCC】How bare does a place look without Bibles and ministers! and what an easy prey is it to the enemy of souls! That gospel is an open vision, which holds forth Christ, which humbles the sinner and exalts the Saviour, which promotes holiness in the life and conversation: and these are precious truths to keep the soul alive, and prevent it from perishing.
【잠29:19 JFB】19. A servant—who lacks good principle.

【잠29:19 MHCC】Here is an unprofitable, slothful, wicked servant; one that serves not from conscience, or love, but from fear.
【잠29:20 JFB】20. (Compare 잠21:5).
hasty in … words?—implying self-conceit (잠26:12).
【잠29:20 MHCC】When a man is self-conceited, rash, and given to wrangling, there is more hope of the ignorant and profligate.
【잠29:21 JFB】21. become his son—assume the place and privileges of one.
【잠29:21 MHCC】Good usage to a servant does not mean indulgence, which would ruin even a child. The body is a servant to the soul; those that humour it, and are over-tender of it, will find it forget its place.
【잠29:22 JFB】22. (Compare 잠15:18). Such are delighted by discord and violence.
【잠29:22 MHCC】An angry, passionate disposition makes men provoking to one another, and provoking to God.

【잠29:25 JFB】25. The fear … snare—involves men in difficulty (compare 잠29:6).
shall be safe—(Compare Margin;잠18:10).
【잠29:25 MHCC】Many are ashamed to own Christ now; and he will not own them in the day of judgment. But he that trusts in the Lord will be saved from this snare.
【잠29:26 JFB】26. (Compare Margin;시27:8). God alone will and can do exact justice.
【잠29:26 MHCC】The wisest course is, to look to God, and seek the favour of the Ruler of rulers; for every creature is that to us which God makes it to be.
【잠29:27 MHCC】The just man abhors the sins of the wicked, and shuns their company. Christ exposed the wickedness of men, yet prayed for the wicked when they were crucifying him. Hatred to sin in ourselves and others, is a needful branch of the Christian temper. But all that are unholy, have rooted hatred to godliness.
