■ 잠언 26장

1. 미련한 자에게는 영예가 적당하지 아니하니 마치 여름에 눈오는 것과 추수 때에 비오는 것 같으니라

  As snow in summer , and as rain in harvest , so honour is not seemly for a fool .

 

2. 까닭 없는 저주는 참새의 떠도는 것과 제비의 날아가는 것 같이 이르지 아니하느니라

  As the bird by wandering , as the swallow by flying , so the curse causeless shall not come .

 

3. 말에게는 채찍이요 나귀에게는 자갈이요 미련한 자의 등에는 막대기니라

  A whip for the horse , a bridle for the ass , and a rod for the fool’s back .

 

4. 미련한 자의 어리석은 것을 따라 대답하지 말라 두렵건대 네가 그와 같을까 하노라

  Answer not a fool according to his folly , lest thou also be like unto him.

 

5. 미련한 자의 어리석은 것을 따라 그에게 대답하라 두렵건대 그가 스스로 지혜롭게 여길까 하노라

  Answer a fool according to his folly , lest he be wise in his own conceit .

 

6. 미련한 자 편에 기별하는 것은 자기의 발을 베어 버림이라 해를 받느니라

  He that sendeth a message by the hand of a fool cutteth off the feet , and drinketh damage .

 

7. 저는 자의 다리는 힘 없이 달렸나니 미련한 자의 입의 잠언도 그러하니라

  The legs of the lame are not equal : so is a parable in the mouth of fools .

 

8. 미련한 자에게 영예를 주는 것은 돌을 물매에 매는 것과 같으니라

  As he that bindeth a stone in a sling , so is he that giveth honour to a fool .

 

9. 미련한 자의 입의 잠언은 술 취한 자의 손에 든 가시나무 같으니라

  As a thorn goeth up into the hand of a drunkard , so is a parable in the mouth of fools .

 

10. 장인이 온갖 것을 만들지라도 미련한 자를 고용하는 것은 지나가는 자를 고용함과 같으니라

  The great God that formed all things both rewardeth the fool , and rewardeth transgressors .

 

11. 개가 그 토한 것을 도로 먹는 것 같이 미련한 자는 그 미련한 것을 거듭 행하느니라

  As a dog returneth to his vomit , so a fool returneth to his folly .

 

12. 네가 스스로 지혜롭게 여기는 자를 보느냐 그보다 미련한 자에게 오히려 바랄 것이 있느니라

  Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit ? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

 

13. 게으른 자는 길에 사자가 있다 거리에 사자가 있다 하느니라

  The slothful man saith , There is a lion in the way ; a lion is in the streets .

 

14. 문짝이 돌쩌귀를 따라서 도는 것 같이 게으른 자는 침상에서 구으느니라

  As the door turneth upon his hinges , so doth the slothful upon his bed .

 

15. 게으른 자는 그 손을 그릇에 넣고도 입으로 올리기를 괴로워하느니라

  The slothful hideth his hand in his bosom ; it grieveth him to bring it again to his mouth .

 

16. 게으른 자는 선히 대답하는 사람 일곱보다 자기를 지혜롭게 여기느니라

  The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason .

 

17. 길로 지나다가 자기에게 상관없는 다툼을 간섭하는 자는 개 귀를 잡는 자와 같으니라

  He that passeth by , and meddleth with strife belonging not to him, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears .

 

18. 횃불을 던지며 살을 쏘아서 사람을 죽이는 미친 사람이 있나니

  As a mad man who casteth firebrands , arrows , and death ,

 

19. 자기 이웃을 속이고 말하기를 내가 희롱하였노라 하는 자도 그러하니라

  So is the man that deceiveth his neighbour , and saith , Am not I in sport ?

 

20. 나무가 다하면 불이 꺼지고 말장이가 없어지면 다툼이 쉬느니라

  Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out : so where there is no talebearer , the strife ceaseth .

 

21. 숯불 위에 숯을 더하는 것과 타는 불에 나무를 더하는 것 같이 다툼을 좋아하는 자는 시비를 일으키느니라

  As coals are to burning coals , and wood to fire ; so is a contentious man to kindle strife .

 

22. 남의 말하기를 좋아하는 자의 말은 별식과 같아서 뱃 속 깊은 데로 내려가느니라

  The words of a talebearer are as wounds , and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly .

 

23. 온유한 입술에 악한 마음은 낮은 은을 입힌 토기니라

  Burning lips and a wicked heart are like a potsherd covered with silver dross .

 

24. 감정 있는 자는 입술로는 꾸미고 속에는 궤휼을 품나니

  He that hateth dissembleth with his lips , and layeth up deceit within him;

 

25. 그 말이 좋을지라도 믿지 말 것은 그 마음에 일곱 가지 가증한 것이 있음이라

  When he speaketh fair , believe him not: for there are seven abominations in his heart .

 

26. 궤휼로 그 감정을 감출지라도 그 악이 회중 앞에 드러나리라

  Whose hatred is covered by deceit , his wickedness shall be shewed before the whole congregation .

 

27. 함정을 파는 자는 그것에 빠질 것이요 돌을 굴리는 자는 도리어 그것에 치이리라

  Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: and he that rolleth a stone , it will return upon him.

 

28. 거짓말하는 자는 자기의 해한 자를 미워하고 아첨하는 입은 패망을 일으키느니라

  A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin .

【잠26:1 JFB】잠26:1-28.
1. The incongruities of nature illustrate also those of the moral world. The fool's unworthiness is also implied (잠17:7; 19:10).

 

【잠26:1 CWC】This division of the book is introduced in the first verse of chapter 25, as the "proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah, king of Judah, copied out." What these words mean it is difficult to say, except in the general sense that the teachers of Hezekiah's period selected and gathered together wise sayings that had been written, or handed down orally in previous generations. They may have been those of Solomon only, and yet his name may be attached to them simply because they were now made part of his general collection. They contain admonitions to the fear of God and righteousness, addressed partly to kings, and yet also to their subjects. They also contain warnings against evil conduct of various kinds, (c. 26); against conceit and arrogance (c. 27); against unlawful dealings, especially of the rich with the poor (c. 28); and against stubbornness and insubordination, (c. 29).

 

【잠26:1 MHCC】Honour is out of season to those unworthy and unfit for it.

 

【잠26:2 JFB】2. Though not obvious to us,
the bird—literally, "sparrow"—and
swallow—have an object in their motions, so penal evil falls on none without a reason.

 

【잠26:2 MHCC】He that is cursed without cause, the curse shall do him no more harm than the bird that flies over his head.

 

【잠26:3 JFB】3. The rod is as much needed by fools and as well suited to them, as whips and bridles are for beasts.

 

【잠26:3 MHCC】Every creature must be dealt with according to its nature, but careless and profligate sinners never will be ruled by reason and persuasion. Man indeed is born like the wild ass's colt; but some, by the grace of God, are changed.

 

【잠26:4 JFB】4, 5. Answer not—that is, approvingly by like folly.

 

【잠26:4 MHCC】We are to fit our remarks to the man, and address them to his conscience, so as may best end the debate.

 

【잠26:5 JFB】5. Answer—by reproof.

 

【잠26:6 JFB】6. A fool fails by folly as surely as if he were maimed.
drinketh damage—that is, gets it abundantly (욥15:16; 34:7).

 

【잠26:6 MHCC】Fools are not fit to be trusted, nor to have any honour. Wise sayings, as a foolish man delivers and applies them, lose their usefulness.

 

【잠26:7 JFB】7. legs … equal—or, "take away the legs," or "the legs … are weak." In any case the idea is that they are the occasion of an awkwardness, such as the fool shows in using a parable or proverb (see Introduction; 잠17:7).

 

【잠26:8 JFB】8. A stone, bound in a sling, is useless; so honor, conferred on a fool, is thrown away.

 

【잠26:9 JFB】9. As vexatious and unmanageable as a thorn in a drunkard's hand is a parable to a fool. He will be as apt to misuse is as to use it rightly.

 

【잠26:10 JFB】10. Various versions of this are proposed (compare Margin). Better perhaps—"Much He injures (or literally, "wounds") all who reward," &c., that is, society is injured by encouraging evil men.
transgressors—may be rendered "vagrants." The word "God" is improperly supplied.

 

【잠26:10 MHCC】This verse may either declare how the Lord, the Creator of all men, will deal with sinners according to their guilt, or, how the powerful among men should disgrace and punish the wicked.

 

【잠26:11 JFB】11. returneth … folly—Though disgusting to others, the fool delights in his folly.

 

【잠26:11 MHCC】The dog is a loathsome emblem of those sinners who return to their vices, 벧후2:22.

 

【잠26:12 JFB】12. The self-conceited are taught with more difficulty than the stupid.

 

【잠26:12 MHCC】We see many a one who has some little sense, but is proud of it. This describes those who think their spiritual state to be good, when really it is very bad.

 

【잠26:13 JFB】13. (Compare 잠22:13).

 

【잠26:13 MHCC】The slothful man hates every thing that requires care and labour. But it is foolish to frighten ourselves from real duties by fancied difficulties. This may be applied to a man slothful in the duties of religion.

 

【잠26:14 JFB】14. (Compare 잠6:10; 24:33).

 

【잠26:14 MHCC】Having seen the slothful man in fear of his work, here we find him in love with his ease. Bodily ease is the sad occasion of many spiritual diseases. He does not care to get forward with his business. Slothful professors turn thus. The world and the flesh are hinges on which they are hung; and though they move in a course of outward services, yet they are not the nearer to heaven.

 

【잠26:15 JFB】15. (Compare 잠19:24).

 

【잠26:15 MHCC】The sluggard is now out of his bed, but he might have lain there, for any thing he is likely to bring to pass in his work. It is common for men who will not do their duty, to pretend they cannot. Those that are slothful in religion, will not be at the pains to feed their souls with the bread of life, nor to fetch in promised blessings by prayer.

 

【잠26:16 JFB】16. The thoughtless being ignorant of their ignorance are conceited.

 

【잠26:16 MHCC】He that takes pains in religion, knows he is working for a good Master, and that his labour shall not be in vain.

 

【잠26:17 JFB】17. meddleth—as in 잠20:19; 24:21; as either holding a dog by the ears or letting him go involves danger, so success in another man's strife or failure involves a useless risk of reputation, does no good, and may do us harm.

 

【잠26:17 MHCC】To make ourselves busy in other men's matters, is to thrust ourselves into temptation.

 

【잠26:18 JFB】18, 19. Such are reckless of results.

 

【잠26:18 MHCC】He that sins in jest, must repent in earnest, or his sin will be his ruin.

 

【잠26:20 JFB】20, 21. The talebearers foster (잠16:28), and the contentious excite, strife.

 

【잠26:20 MHCC】Contention heats the spirit, and puts families and societies into a flame. And that fire is commonly kindled and kept burning by whisperers and backbiters.

 

【잠26:22 JFB】22. (Compare 잠18:8).

 

【잠26:23 JFB】23.Warm professions can no more give value to insincerity than silver coating to rude earthenware.

 

【잠26:23 MHCC】A wicked heart disguising itself, is like a potsherd covered with the dross of silver.

 

【잠26:24 JFB】24. dissembleth—though an unusual sense of the word (compare Margin), is allowable, and better suits the context, which sets forth hypocrisy.

 

【잠26:24 MHCC】Always distrust when a man speaks fair unless you know him well. Satan, in his temptations, speaks fair, as he did to Eve; but it is madness to give credit to him.

 

【잠26:25 JFB】25. Sentiment of 잠26:24 carried out.
seven abominations in his heart—that is, very many (compare 잠24:16).

 

【잠26:26 JFB】26, 27. Deceit will at last be exposed, and the wicked by their own arts often bring on retribution (compare 잠12:13; 시7:16; 9:17, &c.).

 

【잠26:27 MHCC】What pains men take to do mischief to others! but it is digging a pit, it is rolling a stone, hard work; and they prepare mischief to themselves.

 

【잠26:28 MHCC】There are two sorts of lies equally detestable. A slandering lie, the mischief of this every body sees. A flattering lie, which secretly works ruin. A wise man will be more afraid of a flatterer than of a slanderer.
