【잠18:1 JFB】잠18:1-24.
1. Through desire … seeketh—that is, seeks selfish gratification.
intermeddleth … wisdom—or, "rushes on" (잠17:14) against all wisdom, or what is valuable (잠2:7).
【잠18:1 CWC】In these chapters we have a series of exhortations to a life of godliness expressed in general terms about as follows:
(1) Confidence in God as a wise ruler, chapter 16.
(2) A disposition of peacefulness and contentment, chapter 17.
(3) The virtues of affability, fidelity, and others of a social nature, chapter 18.
(4) Humility and meekness, chapter 19.
(5) Sobriety, diligence and kindness, chapter 21.
(6) Justice, patience, submission, chapter 21.
(7) The attainment and preservation of a good name, chapter 22.
(8) Warnings against avarice, licentiousness, and similar vices, chapter 23.
(9) Warnings against ungodly companionship, chapter 24.
【잠18:1 MHCC】If we would get knowledge and grace, we must try all methods of improving ourselves.
【잠18:2 JFB】2. that his heart … itself—that is, takes pleasure in revealing his folly (잠12:23; 15:2).
【잠18:2 MHCC】Those make nothing to purpose, of learning or religion, whose only design is to have something to make a show with.
【잠18:3 JFB】3. So surely are sin and punishment connected (잠16:4).
wicked, for "wickedness," answers to
ignominy, or the state of such; and
contempt, the feeling of others to them; and to
reproach, a manifestation of contempt.
【잠18:3 MHCC】As soon as sin entered, shame followed.
【잠18:4 JFB】4. Wise speech is like an exhaustless stream of benefit.
【잠18:4 MHCC】The well-spring of wisdom in the heart of a believer, continually supplies words of wisdom.
【잠18:5 JFB】5. accept the person—(Compare 시82:2). "It is not good" is to be supplied before "to overthrow."
【잠18:5 MHCC】The merits of a cause must be looked to, not the person.
【잠18:6 JFB】6, 7. The quarrelsome bring trouble on themselves. Their rash language ensnares them (잠6:2).
【잠18:6 MHCC】What mischief bad men do to themselves by their ungoverned tongues!
【잠18:8 JFB】8. (Compare 잠16:28).
as wounds—not sustained by the Hebrew; better, as "sweet morsels," which men gladly swallow.
innermost … belly—the mind, or heart (compare 잠20:27-30; 시22:14).
【잠18:8 MHCC】How base are those that sow contention! and what fatal effects may be expected from small beginnings of jealousy!
【잠18:9 JFB】9. One by failing to get, the other by wasting wealth, grows poor.
waster—literally, "master of washing," a prodigal.
【잠18:9 MHCC】Omissions of duty, and in duty, are fatal to the soul, as well as commissions of sin.
【잠18:10 JFB】10. name of the Lord—manifested perfections (시8:1; 20:2), as faithfulness, power, mercy, &c., on which men rely.
is safe—literally, "set on high, out of danger" (시18:2; 91:4).
【잠18:10 MHCC】The Divine power, made known in and through our Lord Jesus Christ, forms a strong tower for the believer, who relies on the Lord. How deceitful the defence of the rich man, who has his portion and treasure in this world! It is a strong city and a high wall only in his own conceit; for it will fail when most in need. They will be exposed to the just wrath of that Judge whom they despised as a Saviour.
【잠18:11 JFB】11. contrasts with 잠18:10 (compare 잠10:15). Such is a vain trust (compare 시73:6).
【잠18:12 JFB】12. (Compare 잠15:33; 16:18).
【잠18:12 MHCC】After the heart has been lifted up with pride, a fall comes. But honour shall be the reward of humility.
【잠18:13 JFB】13. Hasty speech evinces self-conceit, and ensures shame (잠26:12).
【잠18:13 MHCC】Eagerness, with self-conceit, will expose to shame.
【잠18:14 JFB】14. infirmity—bodily sickness, or outward evil. The spirit, which sustains, being wounded, no support is left, except, as implied, in God.
【잠18:14 MHCC】Firmness of mind supports under many pains and trials. But when the conscience is tortured with remorse, no human fortitude can bear the misery; what then will hell be?
【잠18:15 JFB】15. (Compare 잠1:5, 15, 31).
【잠18:15 MHCC】We must get knowledge, not only into our heads, but into our hearts.
【잠18:16 JFB】16. (Compare 잠17:8, 23). Disapproval of the fact stated is implied.
【잠18:16 MHCC】Blessed be the Lord, who makes us welcome to come to his throne, without money and without price. May his gifts make room for him in our souls.
【잠18:17 JFB】17. One-sided statements are not reliable.
searcheth—thoroughly (잠17:9, 19).
【잠18:17 MHCC】It is well to listen to our enemies, that we may form a better judgment of ourselves.
【잠18:18 JFB】18. The lot—whose disposal is of God (잠16:13), may, properly used, be a right mode of settling disputes.
【잠18:18 MHCC】It was customary sometimes to refer matters to God, by casting lots, with solemn prayer. The profaning the lot, by using it in matters of diversion, or coveting what belongs to others, forms an objection to this now.
【잠18:19 JFB】19. No feuds so difficult of adjustment as those of relatives; hence great care should be used to avoid them.
【잠18:19 MHCC】Great care must be taken to prevent quarrels among relations and those under obligations to each other. Wisdom and grace make it easy to forgive; but corruption makes it difficult.
【잠18:20 JFB】20. (Compare 잠12:14; 13:2). Men's words are the fruit, or, increase of his lips, and when good, benefit them.

【잠18:21 JFB】21. Death and life—or, the greatest evil and good.
that love it—that is, the tongue, or its use for good or evil.
eat … fruit—(Compare 잠18:19; 약1:19).
【잠18:21 MHCC】Many a one has caused his own death, or the death of others, by a false or injurious tongue.
【잠18:22 JFB】22. The old versions supply "good" before the "wife," as the last clause and 잠19:14 imply (compare 잠31:10).
【잠18:22 MHCC】A good wife is a great blessing to a man, and it is a token of Divine favour.
【잠18:23 JFB】23. the rich … roughly—He is tolerated because rich, implying that the estimate of men by wealth is wrong.
【잠18:23 MHCC】Poverty tells men they must not order or demand. And at the throne of God's grace we are all poor, and must use entreaties.
【잠18:24 MHCC】Christ Jesus never will forsake those who trust in and love him. May we be such friends to others, for our Master's sake. Having loved his own, which were in the world, he loved them unto the end; and we are his friends if we do whatever he commands us, 요15:14.
