■ 잠언 16장
1. 마음의 경영은 사람에게 있어도 말의 응답은 여호와께로서 나느니라
The preparations of the heart in man , and the answer of the tongue , is from the Lord .
2. 사람의 행위가 자기 보기에는 모두 깨끗하여도 여호와는 심령을 감찰하시느니라
All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes ; but the Lord weigheth the spirits .

3. 너의 행사를 여호와께 맡기라 그리하면 너의 경영하는 것이 이루리라
Commit thy works unto the Lord , and thy thoughts shall be established .
4. 여호와께서 온갖 것을 그 씌움에 적당하게 지으셨나니 악인도 악한 날에 적당하게 하셨느니라
The Lord hath made all things for himself : yea, even the wicked for the day of evil .
5. 무릇 마음이 교만한 자를 여호와께서 미워하시나니 피차 손을 잡을지라도 벌을 면치 못하리라
Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord : though hand join in hand , he shall not be unpunished .
6. 인자와 진리로 인하여 죄악이 속하게 되고 여호와를 경외함으로 인하여 악에서 떠나게 되느니라
By mercy and truth iniquity is purged : and by the fear of the Lord men depart from evil .
7. 사람의 행위가 여호와를 기쁘시게 하면 그 사람의 원수라도 그로 더불어 화목하게 하시느니라
When a man’s ways please the Lord , he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him.
8. 적은 소득이 의를 겸하면 많은 소득이 불의를 겸한 것보다 나으니라
Better is a little with righteousness than great revenues without right .
9. 사람이 마음으로 자기의 길을 계획할지라도 그 걸음을 인도하는 자는 여호와시니라
A man’s heart deviseth his way : but the Lord directeth his steps .
10. 하나님의 말씀이 왕의 입술에 있은즉 재판할 때에 그 입이 그릇하지 아니하리라
A divine sentence is in the lips of the king : his mouth transgresseth not in judgment .
11. 공평한 간칭과 명칭은 여호와의 것이요 주머니 속의 추돌들도 다 그의 지으신 것이니라
A just weight and balance are the Lord’s : all the weights of the bag are his work .
12. 악을 행하는 것은 왕의 미워할 바니 이는 그 보좌가 공의로 말미암아 굳게 섬이니라
It is an abomination to kings to commit wickedness : for the throne is established by righteousness .
13. 의로운 입술은 왕들의 기뻐하는 것이요 정직히 말하는 자는 그들의 사랑을 입느니라
Righteous lips are the delight of kings ; and they love him that speaketh right .
14. 왕의 진노는 살륙의 사자와 같아도 지혜로운 사람은 그것을 쉬게 하리라
The wrath of a king is as messengers of death : but a wise man will pacify it.
15. 왕의 희색에 생명이 있나니 그 은택이 늦은 비를 내리는 구름과 같으니라
In the light of the king’s countenance is life ; and his favour is as a cloud of the latter rain .
16. 지혜를 얻는 것이 금을 얻는 것보다 얼마나 나은고 명철을 얻는 것이 은을 얻는 것보다 더욱 나으니라
How much better is it to get wisdom than gold ! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver !
17. 악을 떠나는 것은 정직한 사람의 대로니 그 길을 지키는 자는 자기의 영혼을 보전하느니라
The highway of the upright is to depart from evil : he that keepeth his way preserveth his soul .
18. 교만은 패망의 선봉이요 거만한 마음은 넘어짐의 앞잡이니라
Pride goeth before destruction , and an haughty spirit before a fall .
19. 겸손한 자와 함께하여 마음을 낮추는 것이 교만한 자와 함께 하여 탈취물을 나누는 것보다 나으니라
Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly , than to divide the spoil with the proud .
20. 삼가 말씀에 주의하는 자는 좋은 것을 얻나니 여호와를 의지하는 자가 복이 있느니라
He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good : and whoso trusteth in the Lord , happy is he.
21. 마음이 지혜로운 자가 명철하다 일컬음을 받고 입이 선한 자가 남의 학식을 더하게 하느니라
The wise in heart shall be called prudent : and the sweetness of the lips increaseth learning .
22. 명철한 자에게는 그 명철이 생명의 샘이 되거니와 미련한 자에게는 그 미련한 것이 징계가 되느니라
Understanding is a wellspring of life unto him that hath it: but the instruction of fools is folly .
23. 지혜로운 자의 마음은 그 입을 슬기롭게 하고 또 그 입술에 지식을 더하느니라
The heart of the wise teacheth his mouth , and addeth learning to his lips .
24. 선한 말은 꿀송이 같아서 마음에 달고 뼈에 양약이 되느니라
Pleasant words are as an honeycomb , sweet to the soul , and health to the bones .
25. 어떤 길은 사람의 보기에 바르나 필경은 사망의 길이니라
There is a way that seemeth right unto a man , but the end thereof are the ways of death .
26. 노력하는 자는 식욕을 인하여 애쓰나니 이는 그 입이 자기를 독촉함이니라
He that laboureth laboureth for himself; for his mouth craveth it of him.
27. 불량한 자는 악을 꾀하나니 그 입술에는 맹렬한 불 같은 것이 있느니라
An ungodly man diggeth up evil : and in his lips there is as a burning fire .
28. 패려한 자는 다툼을 일으키고 말장이는 친한 벗을 이간하느니라
A froward man soweth strife : and a whisperer separateth chief friends .
29. 강포한 사람은 그 이웃을 꾀어 불선한 길로 인도하느니라
A violent man enticeth his neighbour , and leadeth him into the way that is not good .
30. 눈을 감는 자는 패역한 일을 도모하며 입술을 닫는 자는 악한 일을 이루느니라
He shutteth his eyes to devise froward things : moving his lips he bringeth evil to pass .
31. 백발은 영화의 면류관이라 의로운 길에서 얻으리라
The hoary head is a crown of glory , if it be found in the way of righteousness .
32. 노하기를 더디하는 자는 용사보다 낫고 자기의 마음을 다스리는 자는 성을 빼앗는 자보다 나으니라
He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty ; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city .
33. 사람이 제비는 뽑으나 일을 작정하기는 여호와께 있느니라
The lot is cast into the lap ; but the whole disposing thereof is of the Lord .

1. preparations—schemes.
in man—or literally, "to man," belonging, or pertaining to him.
the answer … Lord—The efficient ordering is from God: "Man proposes; God disposes."
【잠16:1 CWC】In these chapters we have a series of exhortations to a life of godliness expressed in general terms about as follows:
(1) Confidence in God as a wise ruler, chapter 16.
(2) A disposition of peacefulness and contentment, chapter 17.
(3) The virtues of affability, fidelity, and others of a social nature, chapter 18.
(4) Humility and meekness, chapter 19.
(5) Sobriety, diligence and kindness, chapter 21.
(6) Justice, patience, submission, chapter 21.
(7) The attainment and preservation of a good name, chapter 22.
(8) Warnings against avarice, licentiousness, and similar vices, chapter 23.
(9) Warnings against ungodly companionship, chapter 24.
【잠16:1 MHCC】The renewing grace of God alone prepares the heart for every good work. This teaches us that we are not sufficient of ourselves to think or speak any thing wise and good.
【잠16:2 JFB】2. clean—or, "faultless."
weigheth—or, "tries," "judges," implying that they are faulty (잠21:2; 24:12).
【잠16:2 MHCC】Ignorance, pride, and self-flattery render us partial judges respecting our own conduct.
【잠16:3 JFB】3. (Compare Margin). Rely on God for success to your lawful purposes.
【잠16:3 MHCC】Roll the burden of thy care upon God, and leave it with him, by faith and dependence on him.
【잠16:4 JFB】4. for himself—"for its answer," or "purpose," that is, according to God's plan; the wicked are for the day of evil (시49:5; 렘17:18); sinning and suffering answer to each other, are indissolubly united.
【잠16:4 MHCC】God makes use of the wicked to execute righteous vengeance on each other; and he will be glorified by their destruction at last.

【잠16:6 JFB】6. By mercy and truth—that is, God's (시85:10); He effects the atonement, or covering of sin; and the principles of true piety incline men to depart from evil; or, "mercy" and "truth" may be man's, indicative of the gracious tempers which work instrumentally in procuring pardon.

【잠16:6 MHCC】By the mercy and truth of God in Christ Jesus, the sins of believers are taken away, and the power of sin is broken.

directeth—establisheth.
【잠16:9 MHCC】If men make God's glory their end, and his will their rule, he will direct their steps by his Spirit and grace. 10. Let kings and judges of the earth be just, and rule in the fear of God.
【잠16:10 JFB】10. The last clause depends on the first, expressing the importance of equity in decisions, so authoritative.
【잠16:11 JFB】11. are the Lord's … his work—that is, what He has ordered, and hence should be observed by men.
【잠16:11 MHCC】To observe justice in dealings between man and man is God's appointment.
【잠16:12 JFB】12. Rulers are rightly expected, by their position, to hate evil; for their power is sustained by righteousness.
【잠16:12 MHCC】The ruler that uses his power aright, will find that to be his best security.

【잠16:13 MHCC】Put those in power who know how to speak to the purpose.
【잠16:14 JFB】14. This wrath, so terrible and certain, like messengers of death (왕상2:25), can be appeased by the wise.

life—preserves it, or gives blessings which make it valuable.
the latter rain—fell just before harvest and matured the crop; hence specially valuable (신11:14).

【잠16:16 MHCC】There is joy and satisfaction of spirit, only in getting wisdom.
【잠16:17 JFB】17. The highway—A common, plain road represents the habitual course of the righteous in departing from evil.
keepeth—observes.
【잠16:17 MHCC】A sincerely religious man keeps at a distance from every appearance of evil. Happy is the man that walks in Christ, and is led by the Spirit of Christ.
【잠16:18 JFB】18, 19. (Compare 잠15:33). Haughtiness and pride imply self-confidence which produces carelessness, and hence
a fall—literally, "sliding."
【잠16:18 MHCC】When men defy God's judgments, and think themselves far from them, it is a sign they are at the door. Let us not fear the pride of others, but fear pride in ourselves.
【잠16:19 JFB】19. divide the spoil—that is, conquer. Avoid the society of the proud (약4:6).
【잠16:19 MHCC】Humility, though it exposes to contempt in the world, is much better than high-spiritedness, which makes God an enemy. He that understands God's word shall find good.
【잠16:20 JFB】20. handleth a matter—wisely considers "the word," that is, of God (compare 잠13:13).
trusteth—(Compare 시2:12; 118:8, 9).
【잠16:21 JFB】21. wise in heart—who rightly consider duty.
sweetness of the lips—eloquent discourse, persuades and instructs others.
【잠16:21 MHCC】The man whose wisdom dwells in his heart, will be found more truly prudent than many who possess shining talents.
【잠16:22 JFB】22. Understanding—or, "discretion," is a constant source of blessing (잠13:14), benefiting others; but fools' best efforts are folly.
【잠16:22 MHCC】As waters to a thirsty land, so is a wise man to his friends and neighbours.
【잠16:23 JFB】23. The heart is the source of wisdom flowing from the mouth.
【잠16:23 MHCC】The wise man's self-knowledge, always suggests something proper to be spoken to others.
【잠16:24 JFB】24. (Compare 잠15:26). Gentle, kind words, by soothing the mind, give the body health.
【잠16:24 MHCC】The word of God cures the diseases that weaken our souls.

【잠16:25 MHCC】This is caution to all, to take heed of deceiving themselves as to their souls.

in his lips … fire—His words are calumniating (약3:6).
【잠16:27 MHCC】Ungodly men bestow more pains to do mischief than would be needful to do good. The whisperer separates friends: what a hateful, but how common a character!

whisperer—prater, talebearer (잠18:8; 26:20).

taketh a city—that is, by fighting.
【잠16:32 MHCC】To overcome our own passions, requires more steady management, than obtaining victory over an enemy.
【잠16:33 MHCC】All the disposal of Providence concerning our affairs, we must look upon to be the determining what we referred to God; and we must be reconciled to them accordingly. Blessed are those that give themselves up to the will of God; for he knows what is good for them.
