【잠14:1 JFB】잠14:1-35.
1. Every wise, &c.—literally, "The wisdoms" (compare 잠9:1) "of women," plural, a distributive form of speech.
buildeth … house—increases wealth, which the foolish, by mismanagement, lessen.
【잠14:1 CWC】Some regard the division now entered upon as the original nucleus of the whole collection of proverbs (see the first sentence of verse one). The division extends really to the close of chapter 22, and contains "maxims, precepts and admonitions with respect to the most diverse relations of life," In so much of it as is covered by the present lesson we have a contrast "between the godly and the ungodly, and their respective lots in life."
Following Zockler's outline in Lange we have this contrast set before us, first in general terms (c. 10), and after that, to the end of the lesson, in detail, as follows:
(1) As to the just and unjust, and good and bad conduct towards one's neighbor, chapter 11.
(2) As to the domestic and public associations, chapter 12.
(3) As to the use of temporal good, and of the Word of God as the highest good, chapter 13.
(4) As to the relation between the wise and the foolish, the rich and the poor, masters and servants, chapter 14.
(s) As to the various other relations and callings in life, especially within the sphere of religion, chapter 15.
Memory Verses and Choice Texts.
This lesson is not suggestive of questions, but contains verses it would be well to memorize. For example, in chapter 10, verses 7, 9, 14, 22, 25; chapter 11, verses 1, 2, 13, 24, 25, 26, 30; chapter 13, verses 7, 15, 24; chapter 14, verses 10, 12, 25, 27, 32, 34; chapter 15, verses 1, 3, 8.
In Arnot's "Laws from Heaven for Life on Earth," there are helpful discourses on several of these texts, the titles of which will be appreciated by young preachers: "Posthumous Fame," 10:7; "The Center of Gravity," 10:9; "The Passing Whirlwind and the Sure Foundation," 10:25; "Assorted Pairs," 11:2; "Virtue Its Own Reward," 11:17; "Scattering to Keep, and Keeping to Scatter," 11:24; "Raising the Market," 11:26; "The Wisdom of Winning Souls," 11:30; "Man Responsible for His Belief," 14:12; "The Two Departures -- The Hopeful and the Hopeless," 14:32.
【잠14:1 MHCC】A woman who has no fear of God, who is wilful and wasteful, and indulges her ease, will as certainly ruin her family, as if she plucked her house down.
【잠14:2 JFB】2. uprightness—is the fruit of fearing God, as falsehood and ill-nature (잠2:15; 3:32) of despising Him and His law.
【잠14:2 MHCC】Here are grace and sin in their true colours. Those that despise God's precepts and promises, despise God and all his power and mercy.
【잠14:3 JFB】3. rod of pride—that is, the punishment of pride, which they evince by their words. The words of the wise procure good to them.
【잠14:3 MHCC】Pride grows from that root of bitterness which is in the heart. The root must be plucked up, or we cannot conquer this branch. The prudent words of wise men get them out of difficulties.
【잠14:4 JFB】4. crib is clean—empty; so "cleanness of teeth" denotes want of food (compare 암4:6). Men get the proper fruit of their doings (갈6:7).
【잠14:4 MHCC】There can be no advantage without something which, though of little moment, will affright the indolent.
【잠14:5 JFB】5. A faithful witness, &c.—one tested to be such.
utter lies—or, "breathe out lies"—that is, habitually lies (잠6:19; compare 행9:1). Or the sense is, that habitual truthfulness, or lying, will be evinced in witness-bearing.
【잠14:5 MHCC】A conscientious witness will not dare to represent anything otherwise than according to his knowledge.
【잠14:6 JFB】6. An humble, teachable spirit succeeds in seeking (잠8:9; 요7:17; 약1:5, 6).
【잠14:6 MHCC】A scorner treats Divine things with contempt. He that feels his ignorance and unworthiness will search the Scriptures in a humble spirit.
【잠14:7 JFB】7. Avoid the society of those who cannot teach you.
【잠14:7 MHCC】We discover a wicked man if there is no savour of piety in his discourse.
【잠14:8 JFB】8. Appearances deceive the thoughtless, but the prudent discriminate.
【잠14:8 MHCC】We are travellers, whose concern is, not to spy out wonders, but to get to their journey's end; to understand the rules we are to walk by, also the ends we are to walk toward. The bad man cheats himself, and goes on in his mistake.
【잠14:9 JFB】9. Fools make a mock at sin—or, "Sin deludes fools."
righteous … favour—that is, of God, instead of the punishment of sin.
【잠14:9 MHCC】Foolish and profane men consider sin a mere trifle, to be made light of rather than mourned over. Fools mock at the sin-offering; but those that make light of sin, make light of Christ.
【잠14:10 JFB】10. Each one best knows his own sorrows or joys.
【잠14:10 MHCC】We do not know what stings of conscience, or consuming passions, torment the prosperous sinner. Nor does the world know the peace of mind a serious Christian enjoys, even in poverty and sickness.
【잠14:11 JFB】11. (Compare 잠12:7). The contrast of the whole is enhanced by that of house and tabernacle, a permanent and a temporary dwelling.
【잠14:11 MHCC】Sin ruins many great families; whilst righteousness often raises and strengthens even mean families.
【잠14:12 JFB】12. end thereof—or, "reward," what results (compare 잠5:4).
ways of death—leading to it.
【잠14:12 MHCC】The ways of carelessness, of worldliness, and of sensuality, seem right to those that walk in them; but self-deceivers prove self-destroyers. See the vanity of carnal mirth.
【잠14:13 JFB】13. The preceding sentiment illustrated by the disappointments of a wicked or untimely joy.
【잠14:14 JFB】14. filled … ways—receive retribution (잠1:31).
a good man … himself—literally, "is away from such," will not associate with him.
【잠14:14 MHCC】Of all sinners backsliders will have the most terror when they reflect on their own ways.
【잠14:15 JFB】15. The simple … word—He is credulous, not from love, but heedlessness (잠13:16).
【잠14:15 MHCC】Eager readiness to believe what others say, has ever proved mischievous. The whole world was thus ruined at first. The man who is spiritually wise, depends on the Saviour alone for acceptance. He is watchful against the enemies of his salvation, by taking heed to God's word.
【잠14:16 JFB】16. (Compare 잠3:7; 28:14).
rageth—acts proudly and conceitedly.
【잠14:16 MHCC】Holy fear guards against every thing unholy.
【잠14:17 JFB】17. He … angry—literally, "short of anger" (compare 잠14:29, opposite idea).
man … hated—that is, the deliberate evildoer is more hated than the rash.
【잠14:17 MHCC】An angry man is to be pitied as well as blamed; but the revengeful is more hateful.
【잠14:18 JFB】18. inherit—as a portion (compare 잠3:35).
are crowned—literally, "are surrounded with it," abound in it.

【잠14:20 JFB】20. This sad but true picture of human nature is not given approvingly, but only as a fact.
【잠14:20 MHCC】Friendship in the world is governed by self-interest. It is good to have God our Friend; he will not desert us.
【잠14:21 JFB】21. For such contempt of the poor is contrasted as sinful with the virtuous compassion of the good.
【잠14:21 MHCC】To despise a man for his employment or appearance is a sin.
【잠14:22 JFB】22. As usual, the interrogative negative strengthens the affirmative.
mercy and truth—that is, God's (시57:3; 61:7).
【잠14:22 MHCC】How wisely those consult their own interest, who not only do good, but devise it!
【잠14:23 JFB】23. labour—painful diligence.
talk … penury—idle and vain promises and plans.

hasty—(Compare 잠14:17).
