【잠10:1 JFB】잠10:1-32. Here begins the second part of the book, 잠10:1-22:16, which, with the third, 잠22:16-25:28, contains series of proverbs whose sense is complete in one or two verses, and which, having no logical connection, admit of no analysis. The parallelisms of 잠10:1-15:33 are mostly antithetic; and those of 잠16:1-22:16, synthetic. The evidences of art in the structure are very clear, and indicate, probably, a purpose of facilitating the labor of memorizing.
1. wise [and] foolish—as they follow or reject the precepts of wisdom.
maketh … father—or, "gladdens a father."
heaviness—or, "grief."
【잠10:1 CWC】Some regard the division now entered upon as the original nucleus of the whole collection of proverbs (see the first sentence of verse one). The division extends really to the close of chapter 22, and contains "maxims, precepts and admonitions with respect to the most diverse relations of life," In so much of it as is covered by the present lesson we have a contrast "between the godly and the ungodly, and their respective lots in life."
Following Zockler's outline in Lange we have this contrast set before us, first in general terms (c. 10), and after that, to the end of the lesson, in detail, as follows:
(1) As to the just and unjust, and good and bad conduct towards one's neighbor, chapter 11.
(2) As to the domestic and public associations, chapter 12.
(3) As to the use of temporal good, and of the Word of God as the highest good, chapter 13.
(4) As to the relation between the wise and the foolish, the rich and the poor, masters and servants, chapter 14.
(s) As to the various other relations and callings in life, especially within the sphere of religion, chapter 15.
Memory Verses and Choice Texts.
This lesson is not suggestive of questions, but contains verses it would be well to memorize. For example, in chapter 10, verses 7, 9, 14, 22, 25; chapter 11, verses 1, 2, 13, 24, 25, 26, 30; chapter 13, verses 7, 15, 24; chapter 14, verses 10, 12, 25, 27, 32, 34; chapter 15, verses 1, 3, 8.
In Arnot's "Laws from Heaven for Life on Earth," there are helpful discourses on several of these texts, the titles of which will be appreciated by young preachers: "Posthumous Fame," 10:7; "The Center of Gravity," 10:9; "The Passing Whirlwind and the Sure Foundation," 10:25; "Assorted Pairs," 11:2; "Virtue Its Own Reward," 11:17; "Scattering to Keep, and Keeping to Scatter," 11:24; "Raising the Market," 11:26; "The Wisdom of Winning Souls," 11:30; "Man Responsible for His Belief," 14:12; "The Two Departures -- The Hopeful and the Hopeless," 14:32.
【잠10:1 MHCC】The comfort of parents much depends on their children; and this suggests to both, motives to their duties.
【잠10:2 JFB】2. Treasures … nothing—that is, Ill-gotten gains give no true happiness (compare 잠4:17; 마6:19).
righteousness—especially beneficence (시112:9).
death—the greatest of all evils.
【잠10:2 MHCC】Though the righteous may be poor, the Lord will not suffer him to want what is needful for spiritual life.
【잠10:3 JFB】3. (Compare 시37:16-20). The last clause is better: "He will repel the greedy desires of the wicked."
【잠10:4 JFB】4. slack—literally, "deceitful," failing of its purpose (compare 호7:16).
maketh rich—(compare 잠10:22).
【잠10:4 MHCC】Those who are fervent in spirit, serving the Lord, are likely to be rich in faith, and rich in good works.
【잠10:5 JFB】5. son—as 잠1:8, 10, and often.
sleepeth—in indolence, and not for rest.
causeth shame—literally, "is base" (compare 잠14:35; 17:2).
【잠10:5 MHCC】Here is just blame of those who trifle away opportunities, both for here and for hereafter.
【잠10:6 JFB】6. Blessings—literally, "Praises." The last clause is better: "The mouth of the wicked covereth (or concealeth) violence (or mischievous devices)" to be executed in due time (시5:9; 10:7; 롬3:14), and hence has no praises (compare 잠10:11).
【잠10:6 MHCC】Abundance of blessings shall abide on good men; real blessings.
【잠10:7 JFB】7. blessed—literally, "for a blessing," or praise.
shall rot—literally, "be worm-eaten," useless and disgusting.
【잠10:7 MHCC】Both the just and the wicked must die; but between their souls there is a vast difference.
【잠10:8 JFB】8. wise, &c.—(compare 잠9:8, 9, 16), opposed to
prating fool—or, "fool of lips of wicked language."
fall—headlong, suddenly.
【잠10:8 MHCC】The wise in heart puts his knowledge in practice.
【잠10:9 JFB】9. perverteth his ways—acts deceitfully.
known—discovered and punished.
【잠10:9 MHCC】Dissemblers, after all their shuffling, will be exposed.
【잠10:10 JFB】10. Two vices contrasted; hypocrisy, or insinuating evil against one (잠6:13; 시35:19), and rashness of speech. In each case, the results are on the evildoers.
【잠10:10 MHCC】Trick and artifice will be no excuse for iniquity.
【잠10:11 JFB】11. a well—or, "source" of good to himself and others (요7:37, 38). On last clause, see on 잠10:6.
【잠10:11 MHCC】The good man's mouth is always open to teach, comfort, and correct others.
【잠10:12 JFB】12. strifes—or, "litigations."
covereth—by forgiveness and forbearance.
【잠10:12 MHCC】Where there is hatred, every thing stirs up strife. By bearing with each other, peace and harmony are preserved.
【잠10:13 JFB】13. In the lips … found—hence, not beaten, as the wicked-speaking fool.
void of understanding—(잠6:32; 7:7).
【잠10:13 MHCC】Those that foolishly go on in wicked ways, prepare rods for themselves.
【잠10:14 JFB】14. lay up knowledge—that is, as treasures for good use.
mouth … destruction—or, "as to the mouth," &c., destruction is near; they expose themselves to evil by prating.
【잠10:14 MHCC】Whatever knowledge may be useful, we must lay it up, that it may not be to seek when we want it. The wise gain this wisdom by reading, by hearing the word, by meditation, by prayer, by faith in Christ, who is made of God unto us wisdom.
【잠10:15 JFB】15. Both by trusting in "uncertain riches" (딤전6:17), or by the evils of poverty (잠30:9), men, not fearing God, fall into dangers.
【잠10:15 MHCC】This refers to the common mistakes both of rich and poor, as to their outward condition. Rich people's wealth exposes them to many dangers; while a poor man may live comfortably, if he is content, keeps a good conscience, and lives by faith.
【잠10:16 JFB】16. The industry of the righteous is alone truly successful, while the earnings of the wicked tempt and lead to sin.
【잠10:16 MHCC】Perhaps a righteous man has no more than what he works hard for, but that labour tends to life.
【잠10:17 JFB】17. keepeth—observes (잠3:18; 4:22).
refuseth—or, "turns from reproof," which might direct him aright.
【잠10:17 MHCC】The traveller that has missed his way, and cannot bear to be told of it, and to be shown the right way, must err still.
【잠10:18 JFB】18. Both vices must one day be known and punished, and hence their folly.
【잠10:18 MHCC】He is especially a fool who thinks to hide anything from God; and malice is no better.
【잠10:19 JFB】19. Much speech involves risk of sin; hence the wisdom of restraining the tongue (시39:1; 약1:26).
【잠10:19 MHCC】Those that speak much, speak much amiss. He that checks himself is a wise man, and therein consults his own peace.
【잠10:20 JFB】20. Right speech is the fruit of a good heart, but the wicked show theirs to be useless.
【잠10:20 MHCC】The tongue of the just is sincere, freed from the dross of guile and evil design. Pious discourse is spiritual food to the needy. Fools die for want of a heart, so the word is; for want of thought.
【잠10:21 JFB】21. Fools not only fail to benefit others, as do the righteous, but procure their own ruin (compare 잠10:11, 17; 호4:6).
【잠10:22 JFB】22. it maketh, &c.—"it" is emphatic. Riches from God are without the sorrow of ill-gotten wealth (compare 전2:21-23; 딤전6:9, 10, 17).
【잠10:22 MHCC】That wealth which is truly desirable, has no vexation of spirit in the enjoyment; no grief for the loss; no guilt by the abuse of it. What comes from the love of God, has the grace of God for its companion.
【잠10:23 JFB】23. Sin is the pleasure of the wicked; wisdom that of the good.
【잠10:23 MHCC】Only foolish and wicked men divert themselves with doing harm to others, or tempting to sin.
【잠10:24 JFB】24. it—the very thing. The wicked get dreaded evil; the righteous, desired good.
【잠10:24 MHCC】The largest desire of eternal blessings the righteous can form, will be granted.

【잠10:26 JFB】26. that is, causes vexation.
【잠10:26 MHCC】As vinegar sets the teeth on edge, and as the smoke causes the eyes to smart, so the sluggard vexes his employer.
【잠10:27 JFB】27. (Compare 잠9:11; 시55:23).
【잠10:27 MHCC】What man is he that loves life? Let him fear God, and that will secure to him life enough in this world, and eternal life in the other.
【잠10:28 JFB】28. gladness—in confidence of realizing it.
expectation … perish—in disappointment.
【잠10:29 JFB】29. The way, &c.—that is, God's providence sustains the righteous and overthrows the wicked (호14:9).
【잠10:29 MHCC】The believer grows stronger in faith, and obeys with increased delight.
【잠10:30 JFB】30. (Compare 잠12:3; 시37:9-11; 102:28).
earth—or, "land of promise."
【잠10:30 MHCC】The wicked would be glad to have this earth their home for ever, but it cannot be so. They must die and leave all their idols behind.
【잠10:31 JFB】31. bringeth forth—literally, "germinates" as a plant.
froward—(Compare 잠2:12, 14).
cut off—as an unproductive plant.
【잠10:31 MHCC】A good man discourses wisely for the benefit of others. But it is the sin, and will be the ruin of a wicked man, that he speaks what is displeasing to God, and provoking to those he converses with. The righteous is kept by the power of God; and nothing shall be able to separate him from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus.
