1. 욥이 스스로 의롭게 여기므로 그 세 사람의 대답이 그치매

  So these three men ceased to answer Job , because he was righteous in his own eyes .

 

2. 람 족속 부스 사람 바라겔의 아들 엘리후가 노를 발하니 그가 욥에게 노를 발함은 욥이 하나님보다 자기가 의롭다 함이요

  Then was kindled the wrath of Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite , of the kindred of Ram : against Job was his wrath kindled , because he justified himself rather than God .

 

3. 또 세 친구에게 노를 발함은 그들이 능히 대답지는 못하여도 욥을 정죄함이라

  Also against his three friends was his wrath kindled , because they had found no answer , and yet had condemned Job .

 

4. 엘리후가 그들의 나이 자기보다 많으므로 욥에게 말하기를 참고 있다가

  Now Elihu had waited till Job had spoken , because they were elder than he.

 

5. 세 사람의 입에 대답이 없음을 보고 노를 발하니라

  When Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of these three men , then his wrath was kindled .

 

6. 부스 사람 바라겔의 아들 엘리후가 발언하여 가로되 나는 연소하고 당신들은 연로하므로 참고 나의 의견을 감히 진술치 못하였노라

  And Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said , I am young , and ye are very old ; wherefore I was afraid , and durst not shew you mine opinion .

 

7. 내가 말하기를 날이 많은 자가 말을 낼 것이요 해가 오랜 자가 지혜를 가르칠 것이라 하였으나

  I said , Days should speak , and multitude of years should teach wisdom .

 

8. 사람의 속에는 심령이 있고 전능자의 기운이 사람에게 총명을 주시나니

  But there is a spirit in man : and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding .

 

9. 대인이라고 지혜로운 것이 아니요 노인이라고 공의를 깨닫는 것이 아니라

  Great men are not always wise : neither do the aged understand judgment .

 

10. 그러므로 내가 말하노니 내 말을 들으라 나도 내 의견을 보이리라

  Therefore I said , Hearken to me; I also will shew mine opinion .

 

11. 내가 당신들의 말을 기다렸고 당신들이 할 말을 합당하도록 하여 보는 동안에 그 변론에 내 귀를 기울였더니

  Behold, I waited for your words ; I gave ear to your reasons , whilst ye searched out what to say .

 

12. 자세히 들은즉 당신들 가운데 욥을 꺾어 그 말을 대답하는 자가 없도다

  Yea, I attended unto you, and, behold, there was none of you that convinced Job , or that answered his words :

 

13. 당신들이 혹시라도 말하기를 우리가 지혜를 깨달았었구나 그를 이길 자는 하나님이시요 사람이 아니라 하지 말지니라

  Lest ye should say , We have found out wisdom : God thrusteth him down , not man .

 

14. 그가 내게 말을 내지 아니하였으니 나도 당신들의 말처럼 그에게 대답지 아니하리라

  Now he hath not directed his words against me: neither will I answer him with your speeches .

 

15. 그들이 놀라서 다시 대답하지 못하니 할 말이 없음이로구나

  They were amazed , they answered no more: they left off speaking .

 

16. 그들이 말이 없이 가만히 서서 다시 대답지 아니한즉 내가 어찌 더 기다리랴

  When I had waited , (for they spake not, but stood still , and answered no more;)

 

17. 나도 내 본분대로 대답하고 나도 내 의향을 보이리니

  I said, I will answer also my part , I also will shew mine opinion .

 

18. 내게 말이 가득하고 내 심령이 나를 강박함이니라

  For I am full of matter , the spirit within me constraineth me.

 

19. 보라 내 가슴은 봉한 포도주 같고 새 가죽 부대가 터지게 됨 같구나

  Behold, my belly is as wine which hath no vent ; it is ready to burst like new bottles .

 

20. 내가 말을 발하여야 시원할 것이라 내 입을 열어 대답하리라

  I will speak , that I may be refreshed : I will open my lips and answer .

 

21. 나는 결코 사람의 낯을 보지 아니하며 사람에게 아첨하지 아니하나니

  Let me not, I pray you, accept any man’s person , neither let me give flattering titles unto man .

 

22. 이는 아첨할 줄을 알지 못함이라 만일 그리하면 나를 지으신 자가 속히 나를 취하시리로다

  For I know not to give flattering titles ; in so doing my maker would soon take me away .

【욥32:1 CWC】[WORDS OF ELIHU AND THE ADDRESS OF THE ALMIGHTY]
Elihu now comes forward with apparent modesty, and yet great pretensions. Young and inexperienced, he is nevertheless indignant at the manner in which the friends of Job have sought to reply to him. Professing that his views have been revealed from above, he undertakes to clear up all the difficulties in the case. Afflictions are for the good of the sufferer is his dictum, a thought which he exhibits in various lights.
He, too, reflects upon Job for his rashness and presumption, leaning rather to the side of his friends.
Chapter 32 is introductory, but in the following chapter he fully enters upon his argument. If Job had wished to bring his cause before God, let him now present it to him, i. e., Elihu, who assumed to take God's place. Job could not be correct in the claims he made for himself because God must be more righteous than man. God speaks to man in various ways to withdraw him from his purpose and save him from sin.
Job is not disposed to reply, although Elihu gives him an opportunity, and therefore the latter continues in chapter 34 to examine his case more particularly. Job had shown a spirit of irreverence which is rebuked. God's government is administered on principles of equity, and therefore Job must be a wicked man who is called upon to confess that his chastisement was just and to resolve to offend no more. In chapter 35, assuming that Job claimed to be more righteous than God, he examines the position, demonstrating its impossibility.
Having undertaken thus to vindicate the divine character, he proceeds in chapters 36 and 37 to state some of the principles of the divine government, illustrating, his views and showing the necessity of man's submission to God by a sublime description of the greatness of the latter, especially as manifested in the storm. To quote Barnes again, "There is in this description every indication that a storm is rising and a tempest gathering. In the midst of this tempest the address of Elihu is broken off and the Almighty appears and closes the debate."
The Address of the Almighty.
The address of the Almighty covers chapters 38 to 41, and is represented as from the midst of the tempest. Its principle object appears to be to assert God's greatness and majesty and the duty of profound submission to the dispensations of his government. He appeals to His works, showing that man could explain little, and that, therefore, it was to be expected that in His moral government there would be much also above human capacity to understand.
Job is subdued and awed, and confesses his vileness in chapter 40:3-5. To produce, however, a more overpowering impression, and secure a deeper prostration before Him, the Almighty described two of the most remarkable animals He had made, with which description His sublime address concludes.
We agree with Barnes and others, that the general impression sought by this address is that of awe, reverence and submission. That God has a right to do, and that it is presumptuous in man to sit in judgment upon His doings. It is remarkable that God does not refer to the main point in the controversy at all. He does not seek to vindicate His government from the charges brought against it of inequality, nor does He refer to the future state as a place where all these apparent inequalities will be adjusted.
Job is humbled and penitent, chapter 42. His confession is accepted, and his general course approved. His three friends are reprimanded for the severity of their judgment upon him, while he is directed to intercede for them. His calamities are ended and he is restored to double his former prosperity.
Thus God shows Himself the friend of the righteous, and the object of the trial is secured by showing that there is true virtue which is not based on selfishness, and real piety that will bear any trial to which it may be subjected.
It shows that God is able to keep the feet of His saints, and that His grace is sufficient for them who put their trust in Him. We speak of Job as triumphant, but the more vital truth is that God is triumphant in the lives of His saints above the power of the evil one.

 

【욥32:1 MHCC】Job's friends were silenced, but not convinced. Others had been present. Elihu was justly displeased with Job, as more anxious to clear his own character than the justice and goodness of God. Elihu was displeased with Job's friends because they had not been candid to Job. Seldom is a quarrel begun, more seldom is a quarrel carried on, in which there are not faults on both sides. Those that seek for truth, must not reject what is true and good on either side, nor approve or defend what is wrong.

 

【욥32:2 JFB】2. Elihu—meaning "God is Jehovah." In his name and character as messenger between God and Job, he foreshadows Jesus Christ (욥33:23-26).
Barachel—meaning "God blesses." Both names indicate the piety of the family and their separation from idolaters.
Buzite—Buz was son of Nahor, brother of Abraham. Hence was named a region in Arabia-Deserta (렘25:23).
Ram—Aram, nephew of Buz. Job was probably of an older generation than Elihu. However, the identity of names does not necessarily prove the identity of persons. The particularity with which Elihu's descent is given, as contrasted with the others, led Lightfoot to infer Elihu was the author of the book. But the reason for particularity was, probably, that Elihu was less known than the three called "friends" of Job; and that it was right for the poet to mark especially him who was mainly to solve the problem of the book.
rather than God—that is, was more eager to vindicate himself than God. In 욥4:17, Job denies that man can be more just than God.Umbreit translates, "Before (in the presence of) God."

 

【욥32:3 JFB】3. Though silenced in argument, they held their opinion still.

 

【욥32:4 JFB】4. had spoken—Hebrew, "in words," referring rather to his own "words" of reply, which he had long ago ready, but kept back in deference to the seniority of the friends who spoke.

 

【욥32:6 JFB】6. was afraid—The root meaning in Hebrew is "to crawl" (신32:24).

 

【욥32:6 MHCC】Elihu professes to speak by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and corrects both parties. He allowed that those who had the longest experience should speak first. But God gives wisdom as he pleases; this encouraged him to state his opinion. By attention to the word of God, and dependence upon the Holy Spirit, young men may become wiser than the aged; but this wisdom will render them swift to hear, slow to speak, and disposed to give others a patient hearing.

 

【욥32:7 JFB】7. Days—that is, the aged (욥15:10).

 

【욥32:8 JFB】8. Elihu claims inspiration, as a divinely commissioned messenger to Job (욥33:6, 23); and that claim is not contradicted in 욥42:4, 5. Translate: "But the spirit (which God puts) in man, and the inspiration … is that which giveth," &c.; it is not mere "years" which give understanding (잠2:6; 요20:22).

【욥32:15 MHCC】If we are sure that the Spirit of God suggested what we are about to say, still we ought to refrain, till it comes to our turn to speak. God is the God of order, not of confusion. It is great refreshment to a good man, to speak for the glory of the Lord, and to edify others. And the more we consider the majesty of God, as our Maker, and the more we dread his wrath and justice, the less shall we sinfully fear or flatter men. Could we set the wrath Lord always before us, in his mercies and his terrors, we should not be moved from doing our duty in whatever we are called to do.

"Like (new) wine (in fermentation) without a vent," to work itself off. New wine is kept in new goatskin bottles. This fittingly applies to the young Elihu, as contrasted with the old friends (마9:7).

 

【욥32:20 JFB】20. refreshed—literally, "that there may be air to me" (삼상16:23).

 

【욥32:21 JFB】21. "May I never accept," &c. Elihu alludes to Job's words (욥13:8, 10), wherein he complains that the friends plead for God partially, "accepting His person." Elihu says he will not do so, but will act impartially between God and Job. "And I will not give flattery," &c. (잠24:23).
