1. 욥이 대답하여 가로되
Then Job answered and said ,
2. 내가 오늘도 혹독히 원망하니 받는 재앙이 탄식보다 중함이니라
Even to day is my complaint bitter : my stroke is heavier than my groaning .
3. 내가 어찌하면 하나님 발견할 곳을 알꼬 그리하면 그 보좌 앞에 나아가서
Oh that I knew where I might find him! that I might come even to his seat !
4. 그 앞에서 호소하며 변백할 말을 입에 채우고
I would order my cause before him, and fill my mouth with arguments .
5. 내게 대답하시는 말씀을 내가 알고 내게 이르시는 것을 내가 깨달으리라
I would know the words which he would answer me, and understand what he would say unto me.
6. 그가 큰 권능을 가지시고 나로 더불어 다투실까 아니라 도리어 내 말을 들으시리라
Will he plead against me with his great power ? No; but he would put strength in me.
7. 거기서는 정직자가 그와 변론할 수 있은즉 내가 심판자에게서 영영히 벗어나리라
There the righteous might dispute with him; so should I be delivered for ever from my judge .
8. 그런데 내가 앞으로 가도 그가 아니 계시고 뒤로 가도 보이지 아니하며
Behold, I go forward , but he is not there; and backward , but I cannot perceive him:
9. 그가 왼편에서 일하시나 내가 만날 수 없고 그가 오른편으로 돌이키시나 뵈올 수 없구나
On the left hand , where he doth work , but I cannot behold him: he hideth himself on the right hand , that I cannot see him:
10. 나의 가는 길을 오직 그가 아시나니 그가 나를 단련하신 후에는 내가 정금 같이 나오리라
But he knoweth the way that I take : when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold .
11. 내 발이 그의 걸음을 바로 따랐으며 내가 그의 길을 지켜 치우치지 아니하였고
My foot hath held his steps , his way have I kept , and not declined .
12. 내가 그의 입술의 명령을 어기지 아니하고 일정한 음식보다 그 입의 말씀을 귀히 여겼구나
Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips ; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.
13. 그는 뜻이 일정하시니 누가 능히 돌이킬까 그 마음에 하고자 하시는 것이면 그것을 행하시나니
But he is in one mind, and who can turn him? and what his soul desireth , even that he doeth .
14. 그런즉 내게 작정하신 것을 이루실 것이라 이런 일이 그에게 많이 있느니라
For he performeth the thing that is appointed for me: and many such things are with him.
15. 그러므로 내가 그의 앞에서 떨며 이를 생각하고 그를 두려워하는구나
Therefore am I troubled at his presence : when I consider , I am afraid of him.
16. 하나님이 나로 낙심케 하시며 전능자가 나로 두렵게 하시나니
For God maketh my heart soft , and the Almighty troubleth me:
17. 이는 어두움으로 나를 끊지 아니하셨고 흑암으로 내 얼굴을 가리우지 아니하셨음이니라
Because I was not cut off before the darkness , neither hath he covered the darkness from my face .

The last speech Eliphaz makes, chapter 22, is a grand effort to refute Job based upon the latter's appeal to facts. There is more severity in it than he has shown before. He charges Job with cruelty, oppression and injustice as a magistrate. Therefore, no wonder such calamities had come upon him. Using the deluge as an illustration, he shows how God must deal with the wicked according to their deserts. Job is exhorted to acquaint himself with God and be at peace with Him, and all might yet be well.
Job replies pathetically. He has no human help, but turns to God. O, that he might come before Him! He cannot seem to find Him, yet he has confidence in Him. His own integrity is once more asserted. It was not true that God always dealt with men on earth in accordance with their character. The wicked often have long prosperity, though he admits they will ultimately be cut off.
Bildad attempts a reply in chapter 25, and yet he seems to realize that the controversy is decided, for he contents himself simply with a description of the power, wisdom and majesty of God, closing with the sentiment expressed before concerning the comparative impurity and insignificance of man. Bildad has, in fact, yielded the argument and retires from the field.
Job speaks in chapter 26 in a strain of irony. His friends have not enlightened him very much. His own views of the greatness of God are superior to those of Bildad. Notice the sublime description of the divine majesty which follows.
Zophar should have replied, but his lips are closed, and Job himself proceeds more calmly in chapters 27 to 31. Once more he refers to the government of God, giving, as Barnes expresses it, "a most beautiful description of the search for wisdom, detailing the discoveries of science in his time, and saying that none of them could disclose it, and concluding that true wisdom can only be found in the fear of the Lord. Once more he maintains his integrity, and concludes that if God would come forth and pronounce a just judgment on him, he would take the decision and bind it on his head as a diadem, and march forth with it in triumph."
【욥23:1 MHCC】Job appeals from his friends to the just judgement of God. He wants to have his cause tried quickly. Blessed be God, we may know where to find him. He is in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself; and upon a mercy-seat, waiting to be gracious. Thither the sinner may go; and there the believer may order his cause before Him, with arguments taken from his promises, his covenant, and his glory. A patient waiting for death and judgment is our wisdom and duty, and it cannot be without a holy fear and trembling. A passionate wishing for death or judgement is our sin and folly, and ill becomes us, as it did Job.

【욥23:6 JFB】6. An objection suggests itself, while he utters the wish (욥23:5). Do I hereby wish that He should plead against me with His omnipotence? Far from it! (욥9:19, 34; 13:21; 30:18).
strength—so as to prevail with Him: as in Jacob's case (호12:3, 4). Umbreit and Maurer better translate as in 욥4:20 (I only wish that He) "would attend to me," that is, give me a patient hearing as an ordinary judge, not using His omnipotence, but only His divine knowledge of my innocence.

righteous—that is, the result of my dispute would be, He would acknowledge me as righteous.
delivered—from suspicion of guilt on the part of my Judge.
【욥23:8 JFB】8. But I wish in vain. For "behold," &c.
forward … backward—rather, "to the east—to the west." The Hebrew geographers faced the east, that is, sunrise: not the north, as we do. So "before" means east: "behind," west (so the Hindus). Para, "before"—east: Apara, "behind"—west: Daschina, "the right hand"—south: Bama, "left"—north. A similar reference to sunrise appears in the name Asia, "sunrise," Europe, "sunset"; pure Babylonian names, as Rawlinson shows.
【욥23:8 MHCC】Job knew that the Lord was every where present; but his mind was in such confusion, that he could get no fixed view of God's merciful presence, so as to find comfort by spreading his case before him. His views were all gloomy. God seemed to stand at a distance, and frown upon him. Yet Job expressed his assurance that he should be brought forth, tried, and approved, for he had obeyed the precepts of God. He had relished and delighted in the truths and commandments of God. Here we should notice that Job justified himself rather than God, or in opposition to him, ch. 32:2. Job might feel that he was clear from the charges of his friends, but boldly to assert that, though visited by the hand of God, it was not a chastisement of sin, was his error. And he is guilty of a second, when he denies that there are dealings of Providence with men in this present life, wherein the injured find redress, and the evil are visited for their sins.

work—God's glorious works are especially seen towards the north region of the sky by one in the northern hemisphere. The antithesis is between God working and yet not being beheld: as in 욥9:11, between "He goeth by," and "I see Him not." If the Hebrew bears it, the parallelism to the second clause is better suited by translating, as Umbreit, "doth hide himself"; but then the antithesis to "behold" would be lost.
right hand—"in the south."
hideth—appropriately, of the unexplored south, then regarded as uninhabitable because of its heat (see 욥34:29).
【욥23:10 JFB】10. But—correcting himself for the wish that his cause should be known before God. The omniscient One already knoweth the way in me (my inward principles: His outward way or course of acts is mentioned in 욥23:11. So in me,욥4:21); though for some inscrutable cause He as yet hides Himself (욥23:8, 9).
when—let Him only but try my cause, I shall, &c.
【욥23:11 JFB】11. held—fast by His steps. The law is in Old Testament poetry regarded as a way, God going before us as our guide, in whose footsteps we must tread (시17:5).
declined—(시125:5).
【욥23:12 JFB】12. esteemed—rather, "laid up," namely, as a treasure found (마13:44; 시119:11); alluding to the words of Eliphaz (욥22:22). There was no need to tell me so; I have done so already (렘15:16).
necessary—"Appointed portion" (of food; as in 잠30:8). Umbreit and Maurer translate, "More than my law," my own will, in antithesis to "the words of His mouth" (요6:38). Probably under the general term, "what is appointed to me" (the same Hebrew is in 욥23:14), all that ministers to the appetites of the body and carnal will is included.
【욥23:13 JFB】13. in one mind—notwithstanding my innocence, He is unaltered in His purpose of proving me guilty (욥9:12).
soul—His will (시115:3). God's sovereignty. He has one great purpose; nothing is haphazard; everything has its proper place with a view to His purpose.
【욥23:13 MHCC】As Job does not once question but that his trials are from the hand of God, and that there is no such thing as chance, how does he account for them? The principle on which he views them is, that the hope and reward of the faithful servants of God are only laid up in another life; and he maintains that it is plain to all, that the wicked are not treated according to their deserts in this life, but often directly the reverse. But though the obtaining of mercy, the first-fruits of the Spirit of grace, pledges a God, who will certainly finish the work which he has began; yet the afflicted believer is not to conclude that all prayer and entreaty will be in vain, and that he should sink into despair, and faint when he is reproved of Him. He cannot tell but the intention of God in afflicting him may be to produce penitence and prayer in his heart. May we learn to obey and trust the Lord, even in tribulation; to live or die as he pleases: we know not for what good ends our lives may be shortened or prolonged.

【욥23:15 JFB】15. God's decrees, impossible to be resisted, and leaving us in the dark as to what may come next, are calculated to fill the mind with holy awe [Barnes].
