  Hear diligently my speech , and let this be your consolations .

 

3. 나를 용납하여 말하게 하라 내가 말한 후에 또 조롱할지니라

  Suffer me that I may speak ; and after that I have spoken , mock on .

 

4. 나의 원망이 사람을 향하여 하는 것이냐 내가 어찌 초급하지 아니하겠느냐

  As for me, is my complaint to man ? and if it were so, why should not my spirit be troubled ?

 

5. 너희는 나를 보아라, 놀라라, 손으로 입을 가리우라

  Mark me, and be astonished , and lay your hand upon your mouth .

 

6. 내가 추억하기만 하여도 답답하고 두려움이 내 몸을 잡는구나

  Even when I remember I am afraid , and trembling taketh hold on my flesh .

 

7. 어찌하여 악인이 살고 수를 누리고 세력이 강하냐

  Wherefore do the wicked live , become old , yea, are mighty in power ?

 

8. 씨가 그들의 앞에서 그들과 함께 굳게 서고 자손이 그들의 목전에서 그러하구나

  Their seed is established in their sight with them, and their offspring before their eyes .

 

9. 그 집이 평안하여 두려움이 없고 하나님의 매가 그 위에 임하지 아니하며

  Their houses are safe from fear , neither is the rod of God upon them.

 

10. 그 수소는 영락없이 새끼를 배게 하고 그 암소는 새끼를 낳고 낙태하지 않는구나

  Their bull gendereth , and faileth not; their cow calveth , and casteth not her calf .

 

11. 그들은 아이들을 내어보냄이 양떼 같고 그 자녀들은 춤추는구나

  They send forth their little ones like a flock , and their children dance .

 

12. 그들이 소고와 수금으로 노래하고 피리 불어 즐기며

  They take the timbrel and harp , and rejoice at the sound of the organ .

 

13. 그 날을 형통하게 지내다가 경각간에 음부에 내려가느니라

  They spend their days in wealth , and in a moment go down to the grave .

 

14. 그러할지라도 그들은 하나님께 말하기를 우리를 떠나소서 우리가 주의 도리 알기를 즐겨하지 아니하나이다

  Therefore they say unto God , Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways .

 

15. 전능자가 누구기에 우리가 섬기며 우리가 그에게 기도한들 무슨 이익을 얻으랴 하는구나

  What is the Almighty , that we should serve him? and what profit should we have, if we pray unto him?

 

16. 그들의 복록이 그들의 손으로 말미암은 것이 아니니라 악인의 계획은 나와 판이하니라

  Lo, their good is not in their hand : the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

 

17. 악인의 등불이 꺼짐이나 재앙이 그들에게 임함이나 하나님이 진노하사 그들을 곤고케 하심이나

  How oft is the candle of the wicked put out ! and how oft cometh their destruction upon them! God distributeth sorrows in his anger .

 

18. 그들이 바람 앞에 검불 같이, 폭풍에 불려가는 겨 같이 되는 일이 몇 번이나 있었느냐

  They are as stubble before the wind , and as chaff that the storm carrieth away .

 

19. 하나님이 그의 죄악을 쌓아 두셨다가 그 자손에게 갚으신다 하거니와 그 몸에 갚으셔서 그로 깨닫게 하셔야 할 것이라

  God layeth up his iniquity for his children : he rewardeth him, and he shall know it.

 

20. 자기의 멸망을 자기의 눈으로 보게 하시며 전능자의 진노를 마시게 하셔야 할 것이니라

  His eyes shall see his destruction , and he shall drink of the wrath of the Almighty .

 

21. 그의 달 수가 진하면 자기 집에 대하여 무슨 관계가 있겠느냐

  For what pleasure hath he in his house after him, when the number of his months is cut off in the midst ?

 

22. 그러나 하나님은 높은 자들을 심판하시나니 누가 능히 하나님께 지식을 가르치겠느냐

  Shall any teach God knowledge ? seeing he judgeth those that are high .

 

23. 어떤 사람은 죽도록 기운이 충실하여 평강하며 안일하고

  One dieth in his full strength , being wholly at ease and quiet .

 

24. 그 그릇에는 젖이 가득하며 그 골수는 윤택하였고

  His breasts are full of milk , and his bones are moistened with marrow .

 

25. 어떤 사람은 죽도록 마음에 고통하고 복을 맛보지 못하였어도

  And another dieth in the bitterness of his soul , and never eateth with pleasure .

 

26. 이 둘이 일반으로 흙 속에 눕고 그 위에 구더기가 덮이는구나

  They shall lie down alike in the dust , and the worms shall cover them.

 

27. 내가 너희의 생각을 알고 너희가 나를 해하려는 궤휼도 아노라

  Behold, I know your thoughts , and the devices which ye wrongfully imagine against me.

 

28. 너희의 말이 왕후의 집이 어디 있으며 악인의 거하던 장막이 어디 있느뇨 하는구나

  For ye say , Where is the house of the prince ? and where are the dwelling places of the wicked ?

 

29. 너희가 길 가는 사람들에게 묻지 아니하였느냐 그들의 증거를 알지 못하느냐

  Have ye not asked them that go by the way ? and do ye not know their tokens ,

 

30. 악인은 남기워서 멸망의 날을 기다리움이 되고 멸망의 날을 맞으러 끌려 나감이 된다 하느니라

  That the wicked is reserved to the day of destruction ? they shall be brought forth to the day of wrath .

 

31. 누가 능히 그의 행위를 면박하며 누가 능히 그의 소위를 보응하랴마는

  Who shall declare his way to his face ? and who shall repay him what he hath done ?

 

32. 그를 무덤으로 메어 가고 사람이 그 무덤을 지키리라

  Yet shall he be brought to the grave , and shall remain in the tomb .

 

33. 그는 골짜기의 흙덩이를 달게 여기고 그 앞선 자가 무수함 같이 모든 사람이 그 뒤를 좇으리라

  The clods of the valley shall be sweet unto him, and every man shall draw after him, as there are innumerable before him.

 

34. 이러한즉 너희의 위로가 헛되지 아니하냐 너희의 대답은 거짓뿐이니라

  How then comfort ye me in vain , seeing in your answers there remaineth falsehood ?

The second series of the debate is in the same order as the first, and with the same question in view.
Eliphaz and Job.
Eliphaz opens in chapter 15. Job is accused of vehemence and vanity; of casting off fear and restraining prayer; of arrogance and presumption.
God is vindicated by him, and the observation of the sages are quoted. A number of pithy and instructive sayings are used to show that wicked men are subject to sudden alarms and unhappy experiences.
Job replies, renewing his complaint of the way his friends have treated him, and of the intensity and injustice of his sufferings. His appeal is to God before whom his eyes pour out tears. In chapter 17 he prophecies that his trials will yet be a subject of amazement to good men.
Bildad and Job.
Bildad speaks in chapter 18 repeating the former accusation. In his estimation the laws of God's administration are fixed and it is an established principle that the wicked shall be punished in this life, which he illustrates by a number of maxims or proverbs. The student should enumerate these and distinguish between them.
There is nothing new in what Bildad says, but he is enforcing what he has previously advanced with greater emphasis.
In chapter 19 Job speaks more pathetically, exhibiting his character in a beautiful light. His language is sorrowful, his spirit tender and subdued. How long will his friends vex and crush him with their remarks? God has overthrown him, fenced up his way, put away his friends. Even his wife and children are estranged from him.
Then, as Barnes says, there follows the most noble declaration in the book. "Conscious of the importance of what he is about to say, he asks that his words might be engraved on the eternal rock, and then professes his confidence in God and his assurance that he would yet appear and vindicate his character. Though now consumed by disease, and though this process should go on till all his flesh was wasted away, yet he had the conviction that God would appear on the earth to deliver him, and that with renovated flesh and in prosperity, he would be permitted to see God for himself."
Zophar and Job.
Zophar recapitulates the old arguments under a new form, and Job replies, closing the second series of the debate. All his strength is collected for this argument as though resolved to answer them once for all. He appeals to facts. The wicked live, grow old, become mighty in power, etc. They openly cast off God and prosper in an irreligious life, although, as he admits, there are some exceptions. They are reserved, however, for the day of destruction and a future retribution they cannot escape.

 

【욥21:1 MHCC】Job comes closer to the question in dispute. This was, Whether outward prosperity is a mark of the true church, and the true members of it, so that ruin of a man's prosperity proves him a hypocrite? This they asserted, but Job denied. If they looked upon him, they might see misery enough to demand compassion, and their bold interpretations of this mysterious providence should be turned into silent wonder.

 

【욥21:2 JFB】2. consolations—If you will listen calmly to me, this will be regarded as "consolations"; alluding to Eliphaz' boasted "consolations" (욥15:11), which Job felt more as aggravations ("mockings," 욥21:3) than consolations (욥16:2).

【욥21:4 JFB】4. Job's difficulty was not as to man, but as to God, why He so afflicted him, as if he were the guilty hypocrite which the friends alleged him to be. Vulgate translates it, "my disputation."
if it were—rather, "since this is the case."

 

【욥21:5 JFB】5. lay … hand upon … mouth—(잠30:32; 유18:19). So the heathen god of silence was pictured with his hand on his mouth. There was enough in Job's case to awe them into silence (욥17:8).

 

【욥21:6 JFB】6. remember—Think on it. Can you wonder that I broke out into complaints, when the struggle was not with men, but with the Almighty? Reconcile, if you can, the ceaseless woes of the innocent with the divine justice! Is it not enough to make one tremble? [Umbreit].

 

【욥21:7 JFB】7. The answer is 롬2:4; 딤전1:16; 시73:18; 전8:11-13; Lu 2:35-end; 잠16:4; 롬9:22.
old—in opposition to the friends who asserted that sinners are "cut off" early (욥8:12, 14).

 

【욥21:7 MHCC】Job says, Remarkable judgments are sometimes brought upon notorious sinners, but not always. Wherefore is it so? This is the day of God's patience; and, in some way or other, he makes use of the prosperity of the wicked to serve his own counsels, while it ripens them for ruin; but the chief reason is, because he will make it appear there is another world. These prospering sinners make light of God and religion, as if because they have so much of this world, they had no need to look after another. But religion is not a vain thing. If it be so to us, we may thank ourselves for resting on the outside of it. Job shows their folly.

 

【욥21:8 JFB】8. In opposition to 욥18:19; 5:4.

 

【욥21:9 JFB】9. Literally, "peace from fear"; with poetic force. Their house is peace itself, far removed from fear. Opposed to the friends' assertion, as to the bad (욥15:21-24; 20:26-28), and conversely, the good (욥5:23, 24).

 

【욥21:10 JFB】10. Rather, "their cattle conceive." The first clause of the verse describes an easy conception, the second, a happy birth [Umbreit].

 

【욥21:11 JFB】11. send forth—namely, out of doors, to their happy sports under the skies, like a joyful flock sent to the pastures.
little ones—like lambkins.
children—somewhat older than the former.
dance—not formal dances; but skip, like lambs, in joyous and healthful play.

 

【욥21:12 JFB】12. take—rather, "lift up the voice" (sing) to the note of [Umbreit].
timbrel—rather, "tambourine."
organ—not the modern "organ," but the "pipe" (창4:21). The first clause refers to stringed, the latter, to wind instruments; thus, with "the voice" all kinds of music are enumerated.

 

【욥21:13 JFB】13. wealth—Old English Version for "prosperity."
in a moment—not by a lingering disease. Great blessings! Lengthened life with prosperity, and a sudden painless death (시73:4).

 

【욥21:14 JFB】14. Therefore—rather, "And yet they are such as say," &c., that is, say, not in so many words, but virtually, by their conduct (so the Gergesenes, 마8:34). How differently the godly (사2:3).
ways—The course of action, which God points out; as in 시50:23, Margin.

 

【욥21:15 JFB】15. (Compare 렘2:20; 잠30:9, Margin,출5:2).
what profit—(욥35:3; 말3:14; 시73:13). Sinners ask, not what is right, but what is for the profit of self. They forget, "If religion cost self something, the want of it will cost self infinitely more."

 

【욥21:16 JFB】16. not in their hand—but in the hand of God. This is Job's difficulty, that God who has sinners prosperity (good) in His hand should allow them to have it.
is—rather, "may the counsel of the wicked be far from me!" [Umbreit]. This naturally follows the sentiment of the first clause: Let me not hereby be thought to regard with aught but horror the ways of the wicked, however prosperous.

 

【욥21:17 JFB】17. Job in this whole passage down to 욥21:21 quotes the assertion of the friends, as to the short continuance of the sinner's prosperity, not his own sentiments. In 욥21:22 he proceeds to refute them. "How oft is the candle" (lamp), &c., quoting Bildad's sentiment (욥18:5, 6), in order to question its truth (compare 마25:8).
how oft—"God distributeth," &c. (alluding to 욥20:23, 29).
sorrows—Umbreit translates "snares," literally, "cords," which lightning in its twining motion resembles (시11:6).

 

【욥21:17 MHCC】Job had described the prosperity of wicked people; in these verses he opposes this to what his friends had maintained about their certain ruin in this life. He reconciles this to the holiness and justice of God. Even while they prosper thus, they are light and worthless, of no account with God, or with wise men. In the height of their pomp and power, there is but a step between them and ruin. Job refers the difference Providence makes between one wicked man and another, into the wisdom of God. He is Judge of all the earth, and he will do right. So vast is the disproportion between time and eternity, that if hell be the lot of every sinner at last, it makes little difference if one goes singing thither, and another sighing. If one wicked man die in a palace, and another in a dungeon, the worm that dies not, and the fire that is not quenched, will be the same to them. Thus differences in this world are not worth perplexing ourselves about.

 

【욥21:18 JFB】18. Job alludes to a like sentiment of Bildad (욥18:18), using his own previous words (욥13:25).

 

【욥21:19 JFB】19. Equally questionable is the friends' assertion that if the godless himself is not punished, the children are (욥18:19; 20:10); and that God rewardeth him here for his iniquity, and that he shall know it to his cost. So "know" (호9:7).

 

【욥21:20 JFB】20. Another questionable assertion of the friends, that the sinner sees his own and his children's destruction in his lifetime.
drink—(시11:6; 사51:17; 애4:21).

 

【욥21:21 JFB】21. The argument of the friends, in proof of 욥21:20, What pleasure can he have from his house (children) when he is dead—("after him," 전3:22).
when the number, &c.—Or, rather, "What hath he to do with his children?" &c. (so the Hebrew in 전3:1; 8:6). It is therefore necessary that "his eyes should see his and their destruction" (see 욥14:21).
cut off—rather, when the number of his allotted months is fulfilled (욥14:5). From an Arabic word, "arrow," which was used to draw lots with. Hence "arrow"—inevitable destiny [Umbreit].

 

【욥21:22 JFB】22. Reply of Job, "In all these assertions you try to teach God how He ought to deal with men, rather than prove that He does in fact so deal with them. Experience is against you. God gives prosperity and adversity as it pleases Him, not as man's wisdom would have it, on principles inscrutable to us" (사40:13; 롬11:34).
those … high—the high ones, not only angels, but men (사2:12-17).

 

【욥21:23 JFB】23. Literally, "in the bone of his perfection," that is, the full strength of unimpaired prosperity [Umbreit].

 

【욥21:24 JFB】24. breasts—rather, "skins," or "vessels" for fluids [Lee]. But [Umbreit] "stations or resting-places of his herds near water"; in opposition to Zophar (욥20:17); the first clause refers to his abundant substance, the second to his vigorous health.
moistened—comparing man's body to a well-watered field (잠3:8; 사58:11).

【욥21:27 JFB】27. Their wrongful thoughts against Job are stated by him in 욥21:28. They do not honestly name Job, but insinuate his guilt.

 

【욥21:27 MHCC】Job opposes the opinion of his friends, That the wicked are sure to fall into visible and remarkable ruin, and none but the wicked; upon which principle they condemned Job as wicked. Turn to whom you will, you will find that the punishment of sinners is designed more for the other world than for this, Ju신1:14, 15. The sinner is here supposed to live in a great deal of power. The sinner shall have a splendid funeral: a poor thing for any man to be proud of the prospect of. He shall have a stately monument. And a valley with springs of water to keep the turf green, was accounted an honourable burial place among eastern people; but such things are vain distinctions. Death closes his prosperity. It is but a poor encouragement to die, that others have died before us. That which makes a man die with true courage, is, with faith to remember that Jesus Christ died and was laid in the grave, not only before us, but for us. That He hath gone before us, and died for us, who is alive and liveth for us, is true consolation in the hour of death.

 

【욥21:28 JFB】28. ye say—referring to Zophar (욥20:7).
the house—referring to the fall of the house of Job's oldest son (욥1:19) and the destruction of his family.
prince—The parallel "wicked" in the second clause requires this to be taken in a bad sense, tyrant, oppressor (사13:2), the same Hebrew, "nobles"—oppressors.
dwelling-places—rather, "pavilions," a tent containing many dwellings, such as a great emir, like Job, with many dependents, would have.

 

【욥21:29 JFB】29. Job, seeing that the friends will not admit him as an impartial judge, as they consider his calamities prove his guilt, begs them to ask the opinion of travellers (애1:12), who have the experience drawn from observation, and who are no way connected with him. Job opposes this to Bildad (욥8:8) and Zophar (욥20:4).
tokens—rather, "intimations" (for example, inscriptions, proverbs, signifying the results of their observation), testimony. Literally, "signs" or proofs in confirmation of the word spoken (사7:11).

 

【욥21:30 JFB】30. Their testimony (referring perhaps to those who had visited the region where Abraham who enjoyed a revelation then lived) is that "the wicked is (now) spared (reserved) against the day of destruction (hereafter)." The Hebrew does not so well agree with [Umbreit] "in the day of destruction." Job does not deny sinners' future punishment, but their punishment in this life. They have their "good things" now. Hereafter, their lot, and that of the godly, shall be reversed (Lu 16:25). Job, by the Spirit, often utters truths which solve the difficulty under which he labored. His afflictions mostly clouded his faith, else he would have seen the solution furnished by his own words. This answers the objection, that if he knew of the resurrection in 욥19:25, and future retribution (욥21:30), why did he not draw his reasonings elsewhere from them, which he did not? God's righteous government, however, needs to be vindicated as to this life also, and therefore the Holy Ghost has caused the argument mainly to turn on it at the same time giving glimpses of a future fuller vindication of God's ways.
brought forth—not "carried away safe" or "escape" (referring to this life), as Umbreit has it.
wrath—literally, "wraths," that is, multiplied and fierce wrath.

 

【욥21:31 JFB】31. That is, who dares to charge him openly with his bad ways? namely, in this present life. He shall, I grant (욥21:30), be "repaid" hereafter.

 

【욥21:32 JFB】32. Yet—rather, "and."
brought—with solemn pomp (시45:15).
grave—literally, "graves"; that is, the place where the graves are.
remain in—rather, watch on the tomb, or sepulchral mound. Even after death he seems still to live and watch (that is, have his "remembrance" preserved) by means of the monument over the grave. In opposition to Bildad (욥18:17).

 

【욥21:33 JFB】33. As the classic saying has it, "The earth is light upon him." His repose shall be "sweet."
draw—follow. He shall share the common lot of mortals; no worse off than they (히9:27). Umbreit not so well (for it is not true of "every man"). "Most men follow in his bad steps, as countless such preceded him."
