■ 열왕기하 6장

And the sons of the prophets said unto Elisha , Behold now, the place where we dwell with thee is too strait for us.

Let us go , we pray thee, unto Jordan , and take thence every man a beam , and let us make us a place there, where we may dwell . And he answered , Go ye.

And one said , Be content , I pray thee, and go with thy servants . And he answered , I will go .

So he went with them. And when they came to Jordan , they cut down wood .

But as one was felling a beam , the axe head fell into the water : and he cried , and said , Alas , master ! for it was borrowed .

And the man of God said , Where fell it? And he shewed him the place . And he cut down a stick , and cast it in thither; and the iron did swim .
7. 가로되 너는 취하라 그 사람이 손을 내밀어 취하니라
Therefore said he, Take it up to thee. And he put out his hand , and took it.
8. 때에 아람 왕이 이스라엘로 더불어 싸우며 그 신복들과 의논하여 이르기를 우리가 아무데 아무데 진을 치리라 하였더니
Then the king of Syria warred against Israel , and took counsel with his servants , saying , In such and such a place shall be my camp .
9. 하나님의 사람이 이스라엘 왕에게 기별하여 가로되 왕은 삼가 아무 곳으로 지나가지 마소서 아람 사람이 그곳으로 나오나이다
And the man of God sent unto the king of Israel , saying , Beware that thou pass not such a place ; for thither the Syrians are come down .
10. 이스라엘 왕이 하나님의 사람의 자기에게 고하여 경계한 곳으로 사람을 보내어 방비하기가 한두 번이 아닌지라
And the king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God told him and warned him of, and saved himself there, not once nor twice .
11. 이러므로 아람 왕의 마음이 번뇌하여 그 신복들을 불러 이르되 우리 중에 누가 이스라엘 왕의 내응이 된 것을 내게 고하지 아니하느냐
Therefore the heart of the king of Syria was sore troubled for this thing ; and he called his servants , and said unto them, Will ye not shew me which of us is for the king of Israel ?
12. 그 신복 중에 하나가 가로되 우리 주 왕이여 아니로소이다 오직 이스라엘 선지자 엘리사가 왕이 침실에서 하신 말씀이라도 이스라엘 왕에게 고하나이다
And one of his servants said , None, my lord , O king : but Elisha , the prophet that is in Israel , telleth the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in thy bedchamber .
13. 왕이 가로되 너희는 가서 엘리사가 어디 있나 보라 내가 보내어 잡으리라 혹이 왕에게 고하여 가로되 엘리사가 도단에 있나이다
And he said , Go and spy where he is, that I may send and fetch him. And it was told him, saying , Behold, he is in Dothan .
14. 왕이 이에 말과 병거와 많은 군사를 보내매 저희가 밤에 가서 그 성을 에워쌌더라
Therefore sent he thither horses , and chariots , and a great host : and they came by night , and compassed the city about .
15. 하나님의 사람의 수종드는 자가 일찍이 일어나서 나가보니 군사와 말과 병거가 성을 에워쌌는지라 그 사환이 엘리사에게 고하되 아아 내 주여 우리가 어찌하리이까
And when the servant of the man of God was risen early , and gone forth , behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots . And his servant said unto him, Alas , my master ! how shall we do ?
16. 대답하되 두려워하지 말라 우리와 함께한 자가 저와 함께한 자보다 많으니라 하고
And he answered , Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them.

17. 기도하여 가로되 여호와여 원컨대 저의 눈을 열어서 보게 하옵소서 하니 여호와께서 그 사환의 눈을 여시매 저가 보니 불말과 불병거가 산에 가득하여 엘리사를 둘렀더라
And Elisha prayed , and said , Lord , I pray thee, open his eyes , that he may see . And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man ; and he saw : and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha .
18. 아람 사람이 엘리사에게 내려오매 엘리사가 여호와께 기도하여 가로되 원컨대 저 무리의 눈을 어둡게 하옵소서 하매 엘리사의 말대로 그 눈을 어둡게 하신지라
And when they came down to him, Elisha prayed unto the Lord , and said , Smite this people , I pray thee, with blindness . And he smote them with blindness according to the word of Elisha .
19. 엘리사가 저희에게 이르되 이는 그 길이 아니요 이는 그 성도 아니니 나를 따라 오라 내가 너희를 인도하여 너희의 찾는 사람에게로 나아가리라 하고 저희를 인도하여 사마리아에 이르니라
And Elisha said unto them, This is not the way , neither is this the city : follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom ye seek . But he led them to Samaria .
20. 사마리아에 들어갈 때에 엘리사가 가로되 여호와여 이 무리의 눈을 열어서 보게 하옵소서 하니 여호와께서 저희의 눈을 여시매 저희가 보니 자기가 사마리아 가운데 있더라
And it came to pass, when they were come into Samaria , that Elisha said , Lord , open the eyes of these men, that they may see . And the Lord opened their eyes , and they saw ; and, behold, they were in the midst of Samaria .
21. 이스라엘 왕이 저희를 보고 엘리사에게 이르되 내 아버지여 내가 치리이까 내가 치리이까
And the king of Israel said unto Elisha , when he saw them, My father , shall I smite them? shall I smite them?
22. 대답하되 치지 마소서 칼과 활로 사로잡은 자인들 어찌 치리이까 떡과 물을 그 앞에 두어 먹고 마시게 하고 그 주인에게로 돌려 보내소서
And he answered , Thou shalt not smite them: wouldest thou smite those whom thou hast taken captive with thy sword and with thy bow ? set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink , and go to their master .
23. 왕이 위하여 식물을 많이 베풀고 저희가 먹고 마시매 놓아보내니 저희가 그 주인에게로 돌아가니라 이로부터 아람 군사의 부대가 다시는 이스라엘 땅에 들어오지 못하니라
And he prepared great provision for them: and when they had eaten and drunk , he sent them away , and they went to their master . So the bands of Syria came no more into the land of Israel .
24. 이후에 아람 왕 벤하닷이 그 온 군대를 모아 올라와서 사마리아를 에워싸니
And it came to pass after this , that Ben–hadad king of Syria gathered all his host , and went up , and besieged Samaria .
25. 아람 사람이 사마리아를 에워싸므로 성중이 크게 주려서 나귀 머리 하나에 은 팔십 세겔이요 합분태 사분 일 갑에 은 다섯 세겔이라
And there was a great famine in Samaria : and, behold, they besieged it, until an ass’s head was sold for fourscore pieces of silver , and the fourth part of a cab of dove’s dung for five pieces of silver .
26. 이스라엘 왕이 성 위로 통과할 때에 한 여인이 외쳐 가로되 나의 주 왕이여 도우소서
And as the king of Israel was passing by upon the wall , there cried a woman unto him, saying , Help , my lord , O king .
27. 왕이 가로되 여호와께서 너를 돕지 아니하시면 내가 무엇으로 너를 도우랴 타작마당으로 말미암아 하겠느냐 포도주 틀로 말미암아 하겠느냐
And he said , If the Lord do not help thee, whence shall I help thee? out of the barnfloor , or out of the winepress ?
28. 또 가로되 무슨 일이냐 여인이 대답하되 이 여인이 내게 이르기를 네 아들을 내라 우리가 오늘날 먹고 내일은 내 아들을 먹자 하매
And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered , This woman said unto me, Give thy son , that we may eat him to day , and we will eat my son to morrow .
29. 우리가 드디어 내 아들을 삶아 먹었더니 이튿날에 내가 이르되 네 아들을 내라 우리가 먹으리라 하나 저가 그 아들을 숨겼나이다
So we boiled my son , and did eat him: and I said unto her on the next day , Give thy son , that we may eat him: and she hath hid her son .
30. 왕이 그 여인의 말을 듣고 자기 옷을 찢으니라 저가 성 위로 지나갈 때에 백성이 본즉 그 속살에 굵은 베를 입었더라
And it came to pass, when the king heard the words of the woman , that he rent his clothes ; and he passed by upon the wall , and the people looked , and, behold, he had sackcloth within upon his flesh .
31. 왕이 가로되 사밧의 아들 엘리사의 머리가 오늘날 그 몸에 붙어 있으면 하나님이 내게 벌 위에 벌을 내리실지로다 하니라
Then he said , God do so and more also to me, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat shall stand on him this day .
32. 그 때에 엘리사가 그 집에 앉았고 장로들이 저와 함께 앉았는데 왕이 자기 처소에서 사람을 보내었더니 그 사자가 이르기 전에 엘리사가 장로들에게 이르되 너희는 이 살인한 자의 자식이 내 머리를 취하려고 사람을 보내는 것을 보느냐 너희는 보다가 사자가 오거든 문을 닫고 문 안에 들이지 말라 그 주인의 발소리가 그 뒤에서 나지 아니하느냐 하고
But Elisha sat in his house , and the elders sat with him; and the king sent a man from before him: but ere the messenger came to him, he said to the elders , See ye how this son of a murderer hath sent to take away mine head ? look , when the messenger cometh , shut the door , and hold him fast at the door : is not the sound of his master’s feet behind him?
33. 무리와 말씀할 때에 그 사자가 이르니라 왕이 가로되 이 재앙이 여호와께로부터 나왔으니 어찌 더 여호와를 기다리리요
And while he yet talked with them, behold, the messenger came down unto him: and he said , Behold, this evil is of the Lord ; what should I wait for the Lord any longer?

【왕하6:1 JFB】왕하6:1-7. Elisha Causes Iron to Swim.
1. the place where we dwell with thee—Margin, "sit before thee." The one points to a common residence—the other to a common place of meeting. The tenor of the narrative shows the humble condition of Elisha's pupils. The place was either Beth-el or Jericho, probably the latter. The ministry and miracles of Elisha brought great accessions to his schools.

1. The Stratagem at Dothan, 6:8-23.
The incident in verses 1 to 7 seems an interpolation; and some think it belongs at chapter 4:38 in connection with the two miracles, having a somewhat similar occasion. "Swim" (v. 6") is in the Hebrew the same as "float, ' and the idea seems to be that by throwing the stick into the water the iron was caused to come to the surface where the young man could get it.
It is difficult to say when the event of verse 8 occurred, but it is assumed in the reign of Jehoram, with which we have been dealing since Elisha's ministry began. At a time when the Syrians were intending to encamp at a particular spot, and attack the Israelites as they passed by, the prophet gave warning to Jehoram, which enabled the latter to station troops in the threatened position and frustrate their plans (vv. 8-10). This disconcerted the Syrian king, and, learning the truth of the matter, he tried to get hold of Elisha (vv. 11-14).
The "servant" of verse 15, is not Gehazi. To "open the eyes" (v. 17) meant to give that soul-vision which the bodily members can never behold. The "horses and chariots of fire" were the symbols of Jehovah's presence and might. "Blindness" (v. 18) is not absolute loss of sight, but an inability to recognize the prophet.
Elisha's words (v. 19) are not an untruth, as his real residence was Samaria; and in the end he led them to himself, not to harm them, but repay evil with good (vv. 21-23). His inquiry of the king (v. 22) presents difficulty, but probably means "could'st thou be justified in slaying with sword and bow these whom thou hast taken captive?" (See 신20:10-13.)
2. The Famine in Samaria, 6:24-7:20.
An interval of some time must be considered since the close of verse 23. The famine caused by the siege was intense as gathered by the price paid for the meanest food (v. 25). "Dove's dung" is understood by some as an insignificant species of pease resembling it.
The king's putting the blame on the prophet (vv. 30, 31) recalls what episode in Elijah's time? Had Elisha advised against the surrender of the city, or did the king think he might have put an end to the distress in some other way? Verse 33 suggests that the king, who had doubtless followed his messengers, had repented of his threat against Elisha, but nevertheless had lost hope in Jehovah.
This brings forth the new promise of 8:1, 2. The remainder of the chapter presents no difficulties, but we should note the fulfilled prediction in verses 19 and 20.
3. The End of Ben-hadad's Reign, 8:1-15.
The event referred to (vv. 1-6) doubtless took place sometime before this, as the records of Elisha's ministry are not arranged chronologically. Compa계4:38 for the period. Gehazi's appearance (vv. 4, 5) further strengthens the thought that it was before his offence and punishment by leprosy.
The event that follows is tragical indeed (vv. 7-15). Hazael, though not related to Ben-hadad, had been the divine choice as his successor (왕상19:15). When Elisha says the king may recover, yet he shall surely die, he is telling the exact truth, as verse 15 portrays. Had Hazael not murdered him he would have lived. It was Elisha who looked at Hazael until the latter was ashamed, as he might well have been (v. 11).
【왕하6:1 MHCC】There is that pleasantness in the converse of servants of God, which can make those who listen to them forget the pain and the weariness of labour. Even the sons of the prophets must not be unwilling to labour. Let no man think an honest employment a burden or a disgrace. And labour of the head, is as hard, and very often harder, than labour with the hands. We ought to be careful of that which is borrowed, as of our own, because we must do as we would be done by. This man was so respecting the axe-head. And to those who have an honest mind, the sorest grievance of poverty is, not so much their own want and disgrace, as being rendered unable to pay just debts. But the Lord cares for his people in their smallest concerns. And God's grace can thus raise the stony iron heart, which is sunk into the mud of this world, and raise up affections, naturally earthly.

【왕하6:5 JFB】5. it was borrowed—literally, "begged." The scholar's distress arose from the consideration that it had been presented to him; and that, owing to his poverty, he could not procure another.
【왕하6:6 JFB】6. cut down a stick, and cast it in thither—Although this means was used, it had no natural adaptation to make the iron swim. Besides, the Jordan is at Jericho so deep and rapid that there were one thousand chances to one against the stick falling into the hole of the axe-head. All attempts to account for the recovery of the lost implement on such a theory must be rejected.

8-12. the king of Syria warred against Israel—This seems to have been a sort of guerrilla warfare, carried on by predatory inroads on different parts of the country. Elisha apprised King Jehoram of the secret purpose of the enemy; so, by adopting precautionary measures, he was always enabled to anticipate and defeat their attacks. The frequency of his disappointments having led the Syrian king to suspect some of his servants of carrying on a treacherous correspondence with the enemy, he was informed about Elisha, whose apprehension he forthwith determined to effect. This resolution was, of course, grounded on the belief that however great the knowledge of Elisha might be, if seized and kept a prisoner, he could no longer give information to the king of Israel.
【왕하6:8 MHCC】The king of Israel regarded the warnings Elisha gave him, of danger from the Syrians, but would not heed the warnings of danger from his sins. Such warnings are little heeded by most; they would save themselves from death, but will not from hell. Nothing that is done, said, or thought, by any person, in any place, at any time, is out of God's knowledge.

The eyes of his body were open, and with them he saw the danger. Lord, open the eyes of our faith, that with them we may see thy protecting hand. The clearer sight we have of the sovereignty and power of Heaven, the less we shall fear the troubles of earth. Satan, the god of this world, blinds men's eyes, and so deludes them unto their own ruin; but when God enlightens their eyes, they see themselves in the midst of their enemies, captives to Satan, and in danger of hell, though, before, they thought their condition good. When Elisha had the Syrians at his mercy, he made it appear that he was influenced by Divine goodness as well as Divine power. Let us not be overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good. The Syrians saw it was to no purpose to try to assault so great and so good a man.
【왕하6:15 JFB】15. his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do?—When the Syrian detachment surrounded the place by night, for the apprehension of the prophet, his servant was paralyzed with fear. This was a new servant, who had only been with him since Gehazi's dismissal and consequently had little or no experience of his master's powers. His faith was easily shaken by so unexpected an alarm.
【왕하6:17 JFB】17. Elisha prayed, and said, Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see—The invisible guard of angels that encompass and defend us (시34:7). The opening of the eyes, which Elisha prayed for, were those of the Spirit, not of the body—the eye of faith sees the reality of the divine presence and protection where all is vacancy or darkness to the ordinary eye. The horses and chariots were symbols of the divine power (see on 왕하2:12); and their fiery nature denoted their supernatural origin; for fire, the most ethereal of earthly elements, is the most appropriate symbol of the Godhead [Keil].
【왕하6:18 JFB】왕하6:18-23. His Army Smitten with Blindness.
18. Smite this people, I pray thee, with blindness—not a total and material blindness, for then they could not have followed him, but a mental hallucination (see 창19:11) so that they did not perceive or recognize him to be the object of their search.
【왕하6:19 JFB】19-23. This is not the way, neither is this the city—This statement is so far true that, as he had now left the place of his residence, they would not have got him by that road. But the ambiguity of his language was purposely framed to deceive them; and yet the deception must be viewed in the light of a stratagem, which has always been deemed lawful in war.
he led them to Samaria—When they were arrived in the midst of the capital, their eyes, at Elisha's request, were opened, and they then became aware of their defenseless condition, for Jehoram had received private premonition of their arrival. The king, so far from being allowed to slay the enemies who were thus unconsciously put in his power, was recommended to entertain them with liberal hospitality and then dismiss them to their own country. This was humane advice; it was contrary to the usage of war to put war captives to death in cold blood, even when taken by the point of the sword, much more those whom the miraculous power and providence of God had unexpectedly placed at his disposal. In such circumstances, kind and hospitable treatment was every way more becoming in itself, and would be productive of the best effects. It would redound to the credit of the true religion, which inspired such an excellent spirit into its professors; and it would not only prevent the future opposition of the Syrians but make them stand in awe of a people who, they had seen, were so remarkably protected by a prophet of the Lord. The latter clause of 왕하6:23 shows that these salutary effects were fully realized. A moral conquest had been gained over the Syrians.
【왕하6:24 JFB】왕하6:24-33. Ben-hadad Besieges Samaria.
24. Ben-hadad … besieged Samaria—This was the predicted accomplishment of the result of Ahab's foolish and misplaced kindness (왕상20:42).
【왕하6:24 MHCC】Learn to value plenty, and to be thankful for it; see how contemptible money is, when in time of famine it is so freely parted with for any thing that is eatable! The language of Jehoram to the woman may be the language of despair. See the word of God fulfilled; among the threatenings of God's judgments upon Israel for their sins, this was one, that they should eat the flesh of their own children, 신28:53–57. The truth and the awful justice of God were displayed in this horrible transaction. Alas! what miseries sin has brought upon the world! But the foolishness of man perverts his way, and then his heart frets against the Lord. The king swears the death of Elisha. Wicked men will blame any one as the cause of their troubles, rather than themselves, and will not leave their sins. If rending the clothes, without a broken and contrite heart, would avail, if wearing sackcloth, without being renewed in the spirit of their mind, would serve, they would not stand out against the Lord. May the whole word of God increase in us reverent fear and holy hope, that we may be stedfast and immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that our labour is not in vain in the Lord.
【왕하6:25 JFB】25. an ass's head was sold for fourscore pieces of silver—Though the ass was deemed unclean food, necessity might warrant their violation of a positive law when mothers, in their extremity, were found violating the law of nature. The head was the worst part of the animal. Eighty pieces of silver, equal to £5 5s.
the fourth part of a cab—A cab was the smallest dry measure. The proportion here stated was nearly half a pint for 12s. 6d.
dove's dung—is thought by Bochart to be a kind of pulse or pea, common in Judea, and still kept in the storehouses of Cairo and Damascus, and other places, for the use of it by pilgrim-caravans; by Linnæus, and other botanists, it is said to be the root or white bulb of the plant Ornithogalum umbellatum, Star of Beth-lehem. The sacred historian does not say that the articles here named were regularly sold at the rates described, but only that instances were known of such high prices being given.

【왕하6:30 JFB】30. had sackcloth within upon his flesh—The horrid recital of this domestic tragedy led the king soon after to rend his garment, in consequence of which it was discovered that he wore a penitential shirt of haircloth. It is more than doubtful, however, if he was truly humbled on account of his own and the nation's sins; otherwise he would not have vowed vengeance on the prophet's life. The true explanation seems to be, that Elisha having counselled him not to surrender, with the promise, on condition of deep humiliation, of being delivered, and he having assumed the signs of contrition without receiving the expected relief, regarded Elisha who had proved false and faithless as the cause of all the protracted distress.

But Elisha sat in his house, and the elders sat with him—The latter clause of 왕하6:33, which contains the king's impatient exclamation, enables us to account for the impetuous order he issued for the beheading of Elisha. Though Jehoram was a wicked king and most of his courtiers would resemble their master, many had been won over, through the prophet's influence, to the true religion. A meeting, probably a prayer-meeting, of those was held in the house where he lodged, for he had none of his own (왕상19:20, 21); and them he not only apprised of the king's design against himself, but disclosed to them the proof of a premeditated deliverance.
