■ 열왕기하 11장

1. 아하시야의 모친 아달랴가 그 아들의 죽은 것을 보고 일어나 왕의 씨를 진멸하였으나

  And when Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead , she arose and destroyed all the seed royal .

 

2. 요람 왕의 딸 아하시야의 누이 여호세바가 아하시야의 아들 요아스를 왕자들의 죽임을 당하는 중에서 도적하여 내고 저와 그 유모를 침실에 숨겨 아달랴를 피하여 죽임을 당치 않게 한지라

  But Jehosheba , the daughter of king Joram , sister of Ahaziah , took Joash the son of Ahaziah , and stole him from among the king’s sons which were slain ; and they hid him, even him and his nurse , in the bedchamber from Athaliah , so that he was not slain .

 

3. 요아스가 저와 함께 여호와의 전에 육 년을 숨어 있는 동안에 아달랴가 나라를 다스렸더라

  And he was with her hid in the house of the Lord six years . And Athaliah did reign over the land .

 

4. 제칠년에 여호야다가 보내어 가리 사람의 백부장들과 호위병의 백부장들을 불러 데리고 여호와의 전으로 들어가서 저희와 언약을 세우고 저희로 여호와의 전에서 맹세케 한 후에 왕자를 보이고

  And the seventh year Jehoiada sent and fetched the rulers over hundreds , with the captains and the guard , and brought them to him into the house of the Lord , and made a covenant with them, and took an oath of them in the house of the Lord , and shewed them the king’s son .

 

5. 명하여 가로되 너희의 행할 것이 이러하니 안식일에 입번한 너희 중 삼분 일은 왕궁을 주의하여 지키고

  And he commanded them, saying , This is the thing that ye shall do ; A third part of you that enter in on the sabbath shall even be keepers of the watch of the king’s house ;

 

6. 삼분 일은 수르문에 있고 삼분 일은 호위대 뒤에 있는 문에 있어서 이와 같이 왕궁을 주의하여 지켜 방어하고

  And a third part shall be at the gate of Sur ; and a third part at the gate behind the guard : so shall ye keep the watch of the house , that it be not broken down .

 

7. 안식일에 출번하는 너희 중 두 대는 여호와의 전을 주의하여 지켜 왕을 호위하되

  And two parts of all you that go forth on the sabbath , even they shall keep the watch of the house of the Lord about the king .

 

8. 너희는 각각 손에 병기를 잡고 왕을 호위하며 무릇 너희 반열을 침범하는 자는 죽이고 왕의 출입할 때에 시위할지니라

  And ye shall compass the king round about , every man with his weapons in his hand : and he that cometh within the ranges , let him be slain : and be ye with the king as he goeth out and as he cometh in .

 

9. 백부장들이 이에 제사장 여호야다의 모든 명대로 행하여 각기 관할하는바 안식일에 입번할 자와 출번할 자를 거느리고 제사장 여호야다에게 나아오매

  And the captains over the hundreds did according to all things that Jehoiada the priest commanded : and they took every man his men that were to come in on the sabbath , with them that should go out on the sabbath , and came to Jehoiada the priest .

 

10. 제사장이 여호와의 전에 있는 다윗 왕의 창과 방패를 백부장들에게 주니

  And to the captains over hundreds did the priest give king David’s spears and shields , that were in the temple of the Lord .

 

11. 호위병이 각각 손에 병기를 잡고 왕을 호위하되 전 우편에서부터 전 좌편까지 단과 전 곁에 서고

  And the guard stood , every man with his weapons in his hand , round about the king , from the right corner of the temple to the left corner of the temple , along by the altar and the temple .

 

12. 여호야다가 왕자를 인도하여 내어 면류관을 씌우며 율법 책을 주고 기름을 부어 왕을 삼으매 무리가 박수하며 왕의 만세를 부르니라

  And he brought forth the king’s son , and put the crown upon him, and gave him the testimony ; and they made him king , and anointed him; and they clapped their hands , and said , God save the king .

 

13. 아달랴가 호위병과 백성의 소리를 듣고 여호와의 전에 들어가서 백성에게 이르러

  And when Athaliah heard the noise of the guard and of the people , she came to the people into the temple of the Lord .

 

14. 보매 왕이 규례대로 대 위에 섰고 장관들과 나팔수가 왕의 곁에 모셨으며 온 국민이 즐거워하여 나팔을 부는지라 아달랴가 옷을 찢으며 외치되 반역이로다 반역이로다 하매

  And when she looked , behold, the king stood by a pillar , as the manner was, and the princes and the trumpeters by the king , and all the people of the land rejoiced , and blew with trumpets : and Athaliah rent her clothes , and cried , Treason , Treason .

 

15. 제사장 여호야다가 군대를 거느린 백부장들에게 명하여 가로되 반열 밖으로 몰아내라 무릇 저를 따르는 자는 칼로 죽이라 하니 제사장의 이 말은 여호와의 전에서는 저를 죽이지 말라 함이라

  But Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains of the hundreds , the officers of the host , and said unto them, Have her forth without the ranges : and him that followeth her kill with the sword . For the priest had said , Let her not be slain in the house of the Lord .

 

16. 이에 저의 길을 열어주매 저가 왕궁 말 다니는 길로 통과하다가 거기서 죽임을 당하였더라

  And they laid hands on her; and she went by the way by the which the horses came into the king’s house : and there was she slain .

 

17. 여호야다가 왕과 백성으로 여호와와 언약을 세워 여호와의 백성이 되게 하고 왕과 백성 사이에도 언약을 세우게 하매

  And Jehoiada made a covenant between the Lord and the king and the people , that they should be the Lord’s people ; between the king also and the people .

 

18. 온 국민이 바알의 당으로 가서 그 당을 훼파하고 그 단들과 우상들을 깨뜨리고 그 단 앞에서 바알의 제사장 맛단을 죽이니라 제사장이 관리들을 세워 여호와의 전을 수직하게 하고

  And all the people of the land went into the house of Baal , and brake it down ; his altars and his images brake they in pieces thoroughly , and slew Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars . And the priest appointed officers over the house of the Lord .

 

19. 또 백부장들과 가리 사람과 호위병과 온 국민을 거느리고 왕을 인도하여 여호와의 전에서 내려와서 호위병의 문 길로 말미암아 왕궁에 이르매 저가 왕의 보좌에 앉으니

  And he took the rulers over hundreds , and the captains , and the guard , and all the people of the land ; and they brought down the king from the house of the Lord , and came by the way of the gate of the guard to the king’s house . And he sat on the throne of the kings .

 

20. 온 국민이 즐거워하고 성중이 평온하더라 아달랴를 무리가 왕궁에서 칼로 죽였었더라

  And all the people of the land rejoiced , and the city was in quiet : and they slew Athaliah with the sword beside the king’s house .

 

21. 요아스가 위에 나아갈 때에 나이 칠 세였더라

  Seven years old was Jehoash when he began to reign .

【왕하11:1 JFB】왕하11:1-3. Jehoash Saved from Athaliah's Massacre.
1. Athaliah—(See on 대하22:2). She had possessed great influence over her son, who, by her counsels, had ruled in the spirit of the house of Ahab.
destroyed all the seed royal—all connected with the royal family who might have urged a claim to the throne, and who had escaped the murderous hands of Jehu (대하21:2-4; 22:1; 왕하10:13, 14). This massacre she was incited to perpetrate—partly from a determination not to let David's family outlive hers; partly as a measure of self-defense to secure herself against the violence of Jehu, who was bent on destroying the whole of Ahab's posterity to which she belonged (왕하8:18-26); but chiefly from personal ambition to rule, and a desire to establish the worship of Baal. Such was the sad fruit of the unequal alliance between the son of the pious Jehoshaphat and a daughter of the idolatrous and wicked house of Ahab.

 

【왕하11:1 CWC】[ANOTHER CENTURY OF ISRAEL AND JUDAH]
1. Joash of Judah, Chapters 11 and 12.
The chief events of this reign are the rescue of the infant king from the murderous grandmother (11:1-3); the coup d'etat of the high priest by which he was raised to the throne (vv. 4-16); the reforms of the high priest as regent of the kingdom (vv. 17-21); the repairing of the temple by the king (12:1-16); the surrender to the Syrians (vv. 17, 18), and the king's assassination (vv. 19-21).
Be careful to read the parallel chapters in 2 Chronicles (22-24), which add details, though at this distance it may be impossible to reconcile all the minor differences.
2. Jehoahaz of Israel, 13:1-9.
This reign is notable not for what man did but what God did, as indicated in verse four. That His compassion was awakened towards such a people commands the wonder even of the spiritually enlightened -- a wonder which the sacred narrator Himself expresses in the parenthetic verses (vv. 5, 6). "Saviour" or delivered is used in a military sense, as in Judges. He did not appear in Jehoahaz's time but in that of his successors Jehoash and Jeroboam II.
3. Jehoash of Israel, vv. 10-25.
We need not speak further of the chronological difficulty here (v. 10 compared with v. 1), which we can not solve, but pass on to the preliminary fulfillment of the promised "saviour" (v. 5), found in verses 14 to 25.
Jehoash, or Joash (v. 14), is in sore distress by reason of the affliction in verse three, and sufficiently penitent to implore Jehovah through His prophet (v. 14). The symbolism of the subsequent verses (15-19) is plain. "Take bow and arrows" means, arm thyself for war against the Syrians. "The arrow of the Lord's deliverance" means that the victory would come from God. The second part of the action was an enhancement of it, and showed the king to lack that zeal and persevering trust in God that would have brought the complete destruction of his enemy (Note verse 25).
The extraordinary event in verse 21 is to be accepted just as it is, but it is useless to speculate on the cause or the object of it.
4. Amaziah of Judah, 14:1-20.
An interesting event is the challenge Amaziah sends to Jehoash, the manner in which it is received, and the outcome of it (vv. 8-14). It is worthy of remark that he met death in the same way as his father whose murder he had been so prompt to avenge (vv. 19, 20).
5. Jeroboam II of Israel, vv. 23-29.
Now God fully redeems His promise to give a "saviour" to Israel (13:5).
Observe the long reign of this king -- the longest in the annals of Israel (v. 23). Observe his remarkable victories (v. 25). Observe the reference to Jonah who seems in succession to Elisha, and lived probably contemporaneously with Jehoash or even Jehoahaz. It may have been through him that God gave the promise to that king to which we have made reference. The close of his reign marks about a century from the beginning of that of Joash of Judah.
Another circumstance of interest is that Amos and Hosea both lived and prophesied in this reign (see the opening verses of their prophecies).

 

【왕하11:1 MHCC】Athaliah destroyed all she knew to be akin to the crown. Jehoash, one of the king's sons, was hid. Now was the promise made to David bound up in one life only, and yet it did not fail. Thus to the Son of David, the Lord, according to his promise, will secure a spiritual seed, hidden sometimes, and unseen, but hidden in God's pavilion, and unhurt. Six years Athaliah tyrannized. Then the king was brought forward. A child indeed, but he had a good guardian, and, what was better, a good God to go to With such joy and satisfaction must the kingdom of Christ be welcomed into our hearts, when his throne is set up there, and Satan the usurper is cast out. Say, Let the King, even Jesus, live, for ever live and reign in my soul, and in all the world.

 

【왕하11:2 JFB】2. Jehosheba—or Jehoshabeath (대하22:11).
daughter of King Joram—not by Athaliah, but by a secondary wife.
stole him from among the king's sons which were slain—either from among the corpses, he being considered dead, or out of the palace nursery.
hid him … in the bedchamber—for the use of the priests, which was in some part of the temple (왕하11:3), and of which Jehoiada and his wife had the sole charge. What is called, however, the bedchamber in the East is not the kind of apartment that we understand by the name, but a small closet, into which are flung during the day the mattresses and other bedding materials spread on the floors or divans of the sitting-rooms by day. Such a slumber-room was well suited to be a convenient place for the recovery of his wounds, and a hiding-place for the royal infant and his nurse.

 

【왕하11:4 JFB】왕하11:4-12. He Is Made King.
4. the seventh year—namely, of the reign of Athaliah, and the rescue of Jehoash.
Jehoiada sent and fetched the rulers, &c.—He could scarcely have obtained such a general convocation except at the time, or on pretext, of a public and solemn festival. Having revealed to them the secret of the young king's preservation and entered into a covenant with them for the overthrow of the tyrant, he then arranged with them the plan and time of carrying their plot into execution (see on 대하22:10-23:21). The conduct of Jehoiada, who acted the leading and chief part in this conspiracy, admits of an easy and full justification; for, while Athaliah was a usurper, and belonged to a race destined by divine denunciation to destruction, even his own wife had a better and stronger claim to the throne; the sovereignty of Judah had been divinely appropriated to the family of David, and therefore the young prince on whom it was proposed to confer the crown, possessed an inherent right to it, of which a usurper could not deprive him. Moreover, Jehoiada was most probably the high priest, whose official duty it was to watch over the due execution of God's laws, and who in his present movement, was encouraged and aided by the countenance and support of the chief authorities, both civil and ecclesiastical, in the country. In addition to all these considerations, he seems to have been directed by an impulse of the Divine Spirit, through the counsels and exhortations of the prophets of the time.

13. Athaliah heard the noise of the guard and of the people—The profound secrecy with which the conspiracy had been conducted rendered the unusual acclamations of the vast assembled crowd the more startling and roused the suspicions of the tyrant.
she came … into the temple of the Lord—that is, the courts, which she was permitted to enter by Jehoiada's directions (왕하11:8) in order that she might be secured.

 

【왕하11:13 MHCC】Athaliah hastened her own destruction. She herself was the greatest traitor, and yet was first and loudest in crying, Treason, treason! The most guilty are commonly the most forward to reproach others.

17, 18. a covenant between the Lord and the king and the people—The covenant with the Lord was a renewal of the national covenant with Israel (출19:1-24:18; "to be unto him a people of inheritance," 신4:6; 27:9). The covenant between the king and the people was the consequence of this, and by it the king bound himself to rule according to the divine law, while the people engaged to submit, to give him allegiance as the Lord's anointed. The immediate fruit of this renewal of the covenant was the destruction of the temple and the slaughter of the priests of Baal (see 왕하10:27); the restoration of the pure worship of God in all its ancient integrity; and the establishment of the young king on the hereditary throne of Judah [왕하11:19].

 

【왕하11:17 MHCC】King and people would cleave most firmly to each other, when both had joined themselves to the Lord. It is well with a people, when all the changes that pass over them help to revive, strengthen, and advance the interests of religion among them. Covenants are of use, both to remind us of, and bind us to, the duties already binding on us. They immediately abolished idolatry; and, pursuant to the covenant with one another, they expressed mutual readiness to help each other. The people rejoiced, and Jerusalem was quiet. The way for people to be joyful and at peace, is to engage fully in the service of God; for the voice of joy and thanksgiving is in the dwellings of the righteous, but there is no peace for the wicked.
