1. 다윗이 죽을 날이 임박하매 그 아들 솔로몬에게 명하여 가로되
Now the days of David drew nigh that he should die ; and he charged Solomon his son , saying ,
2. 내가 이제 세상 모든 사람의 가는 길로 가게 되었노니 너는 힘써 대장부가 되고
I go the way of all the earth : be thou strong therefore, and shew thyself a man ;
3. 네 하나님 여호와의 명을 지켜 그 길로 행하여 그 법률과 계명과 율례와 증거를 모세의 율법에 기록된대로 지키라 그리하면 네가 무릇 무엇을 하든지 어디로 가든지 형통할지라
And keep the charge of the Lord thy God , to walk in his ways , to keep his statutes , and his commandments , and his judgments , and his testimonies , as it is written in the law of Moses , that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest , and whithersoever thou turnest thyself:
4. 여호와께서 내 일에 대하여 말씀하시기를 만일 네 자손이 그 길을 삼가 마음을 다하고 성품을 다하여 진실히 내 앞에서 행하면 이스라엘 왕위에 오를 사람이 네게서 끊어지지 아니하리라 하신 말씀을 확실히 이루게 하시리라
That the Lord may continue his word which he spake concerning me, saying , If thy children take heed to their way , to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul , there shall not fail thee (said he) a man on the throne of Israel .

Moreover thou knowest also what Joab the son of Zeruiah did to me, and what he did to the two captains of the hosts of Israel , unto Abner the son of Ner , and unto Amasa the son of Jether , whom he slew , and shed the blood of war in peace , and put the blood of war upon his girdle that was about his loins , and in his shoes that were on his feet .
6. 네 지혜대로 행하여 그 백발로 평안히 음부에 내려가지 못하게 하라
Do therefore according to thy wisdom , and let not his hoar head go down to the grave in peace .
7. 마땅히 길르앗 바실래의 아들들에게 은총을 베풀어 저희로 네 상에서 먹는 자 중에 참예하게 하라 내가 네 형 압살롬의 낯을 피하여 도망할 때에 저희가 내게 나아왔었느니라
But shew kindness unto the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite , and let them be of those that eat at thy table : for so they came to me when I fled because of Absalom thy brother .

And, behold, thou hast with thee Shimei the son of Gera , a Benjamite of Bahurim , which cursed me with a grievous curse in the day when I went to Mahanaim : but he came down to meet me at Jordan , and I sware to him by the Lord , saying , I will not put thee to death with the sword .
9. 그러나 저를 무죄한 자로 여기지 말지어다 너는 지혜있는 사람인즉 저에게 행할 일을 알지니 그 백발의 피를 흘려 저로 음부에 내려가게 하라
Now therefore hold him not guiltless : for thou art a wise man , and knowest what thou oughtest to do unto him; but his hoar head bring thou down to the grave with blood .
10. 다윗이 그 열조와 함께 누워 자서 다윗 성에 장사되니
So David slept with his fathers , and was buried in the city of David .
11. 다윗이 이스라엘 왕이 된지 사십 년이라 헤브론에서 칠 년을 치리하였고 예루살렘에서 삼십삼 년을 치리하였더라
And the days that David reigned over Israel were forty years : seven years reigned he in Hebron , and thirty and three years reigned he in Jerusalem .
12. 솔로몬이 그 아비 다윗의 위에 앉으니 그 나라가 심히 견고하니라
Then sat Solomon upon the throne of David his father ; and his kingdom was established greatly .
13. 학깃의 아들 아도니야가 솔로몬의 모친 밧세바에게 나아온지라 밧세바가 이르되 네가 화평한 목적으로 왔느뇨 대답하되 화평한 목적이니이다
And Adonijah the son of Haggith came to Bath–sheba the mother of Solomon . And she said , Comest thou peaceably ? And he said , Peaceably .
14. 또 가로되 내가 말씀할 일이 있나이다 밧세바가 가로되 말하라
He said moreover, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And she said , Say on .
15. 저가 가로되 당신도 아시는바여니와 이 왕위는 내 것이었고 온 이스라엘은 다 얼굴을 내게로 향하여 왕을 삼으려 하였는데 그 왕위가 돌이켜 내 아우의 것이 되었음은 여호와께로 말미암음이니이다
And he said , Thou knowest that the kingdom was mine, and that all Israel set their faces on me, that I should reign : howbeit the kingdom is turned about , and is become my brother’s : for it was his from the Lord .
16. 이제 내가 한가지 소원을 당신에게 구하오니 내 얼굴을 괄시하지 마옵소서 밧세바가 가로되 말하라
And now I ask one petition of thee, deny me not. And she said unto him, Say on .
17. 가로되 청컨대 솔로몬 왕에게 말씀하여 저로 수넴 여자 아비삭을 내게 주어 아내를 삼게 하소서 왕이 당신의 얼굴을 괄시치 아니하리이다
And he said , Speak , I pray thee, unto Solomon the king , (for he will not say thee nay ,) that he give me Abishag the Shunammite to wife .
18. 밧세바가 가로되 좋다 내가 너를 위하여 왕께 말하리라
And Bath–sheba said , Well ; I will speak for thee unto the king .
19. 밧세바가 이에 아도니야를 위하여 말하려고 솔로몬 왕에게 이르니 왕이 일어나 영접하여 절한 후에 다시 위에 앉고 그 모친을 위하여 자리를 베풀게 하고 그 우편에 앉게 하는지라
Bath–sheba therefore went unto king Solomon , to speak unto him for Adonijah . And the king rose up to meet her, and bowed himself unto her, and sat down on his throne , and caused a seat to be set for the king’s mother ; and she sat on his right hand .
20. 밧세바가 이르되 내가 한가지 작은 일로 왕께 구하오니 내 얼굴을 괄시하지 마소서 왕이 대답하되 내 어머니여 구하시옵소서 내가 어머니의 얼굴을 괄시하지 아니하리이다
Then she said , I desire one small petition of thee; I pray thee, say me not nay . And the king said unto her, Ask on , my mother : for I will not say thee nay .
21. 가로되 청컨대 수넴 여자 아비삭을 아도니야에게 주어 아내를 삼게 하소서
And she said , Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to Adonijah thy brother to wife .
22. 솔로몬 왕이 그 모친에게 대답하여 가로되 어찌하여 아도니야를 위하여 수넴 여자 아비삭을 구하시나이까 저는 나의 형이오니 저를 위하여 왕위도 구하옵소서 저뿐 아니라 제사장 아비아달과 스루야의 아들 요압도 위하여 구하옵소서 하고
And king Solomon answered and said unto his mother , And why dost thou ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah ? ask for him the kingdom also; for he is mine elder brother ; even for him, and for Abiathar the priest , and for Joab the son of Zeruiah .
23. 여호와를 가리켜 맹세하여 가로되 아도니야가 이런 말을 하였은즉 그 생명을 잃지 아니하면 하나님은 내게 벌 위에 벌을 내리심이 마땅하니이다
Then king Solomon sware by the Lord , saying , God do so to me, and more also , if Adonijah have not spoken this word against his own life .
24. 나를 세워 내 부친 다윗의 위에 오르게 하시고 허락하신 말씀대로 나를 위하여 집을 세우신 여호와의 사심을 가리켜 맹세하노니 아도니야는 오늘날 죽임을 당하리라 하고
Now therefore, as the Lord liveth , which hath established me, and set me on the throne of David my father , and who hath made me an house , as he promised , Adonijah shall be put to death this day .
25. 여호야다의 아들 브나야를 보내매 저가 아도니야를 쳐서 죽였더라
And king Solomon sent by the hand of Benaiah the son of Jehoiada ; and he fell upon him that he died .
26. 왕이 제사장 아비아달에게 이르되 네 고향 아나돗으로 가라 너는 마땅히 죽을 자로되 네가 내 부친 다윗 앞에서 주 여호와의 궤를 메었고 또 내 부친이 모든 환난을 받을 때에 너도 환난을 받았은즉 내가 오늘날 너를 죽이지 아니하노라 하고
And unto Abiathar the priest said the king , Get thee to Anathoth , unto thine own fields ; for thou art worthy of death : but I will not at this time put thee to death , because thou barest the ark of the Lord God before David my father , and because thou hast been afflicted in all wherein my father was afflicted .
27. 아비아달을 쫓아내어 여호와의 제사장 직분을 파면하니 여호와께서 실로에서 엘리의 집에 대하여 하신 말씀을 응하게 함이더라
So Solomon thrust out Abiathar from being priest unto the Lord ; that he might fulfil the word of the Lord , which he spake concerning the house of Eli in Shiloh .
28. 그 소문이 요압에게 들리매 저가 여호와의 장막으로 도망하여 단 뿔을 잡으니 이는 저가 다윗을 떠나 압살롬을 좇지 아니하였으나 아도니야를 좇았음이더라
Then tidings came to Joab : for Joab had turned after Adonijah , though he turned not after Absalom . And Joab fled unto the tabernacle of the Lord , and caught hold on the horns of the altar .
29. 혹이 솔로몬 왕에게 고하되 요압이 여호와의 장막으로 도망하여 단 곁에 있나이다 솔로몬이 여호야다의 아들 브나야를 보내며 가로되 너는 가서 저를 치라
And it was told king Solomon that Joab was fled unto the tabernacle of the Lord ; and, behold, he is by the altar . Then Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada , saying , Go , fall upon him.
30. 브나야가 여호와의 장막에 이르러 저에게 이르되 왕께서 나오라 하시느니라 저가 대답하되 아니라 내가 여기서 죽겠노라 브나야가 돌아가서 왕께 고하여 가로되 요압이 이리이리 내게 대답하더이다
And Benaiah came to the tabernacle of the Lord , and said unto him, Thus saith the king , Come forth . And he said , Nay; but I will die here. And Benaiah brought the king word again , saying , Thus said Joab , and thus he answered me.
31. 왕이 이르되 저의 말과 같이 하여 저를 죽여 묻으라 요압이 까닭없이 흘린 피를 나와 내 부친의 집에서 네가 제하리라
And the king said unto him, Do as he hath said , and fall upon him, and bury him; that thou mayest take away the innocent blood , which Joab shed , from me, and from the house of my father .
32. 여호와께서 요압의 피를 그 머리로 돌려 보내실 것은 저가 자기보다 의롭고 선한 두 사람을 쳤음이니 곧 이스라엘 군대 장관 넬의 아들 아브넬과 유다 군대장관 예델의 아들 아마사를 칼로 죽였음이라 이 일을 내 부친 다윗은 알지 못하셨나니
And the Lord shall return his blood upon his own head , who fell upon two men more righteous and better than he, and slew them with the sword , my father David not knowing thereof, to wit, Abner the son of Ner , captain of the host of Israel , and Amasa the son of Jether , captain of the host of Judah .
33. 저희의 피는 영영히 요압의 머리와 그 자손의 머리로 돌아갈지라도 다윗과 그 자손과 그 집과 그 위에는 여호와께로 말미암은 평강이 영원히 있으리라
Their blood shall therefore return upon the head of Joab , and upon the head of his seed for ever : but upon David , and upon his seed , and upon his house , and upon his throne , shall there be peace for ever from the Lord .
34. 여호야다의 아들 브나야가 곧 올라가서 저를 쳐 죽이매 저가 거친 땅에 있는 자기의 집에 매장되니라
So Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up , and fell upon him, and slew him: and he was buried in his own house in the wilderness .
35. 왕이 이에 여호야다의 아들 브나야로 요압을 대신하여 군대장관을 삼고 또 제사장 사독으로 아비아달을 대신하게 하니라
And the king put Benaiah the son of Jehoiada in his room over the host : and Zadok the priest did the king put in the room of Abiathar .
36. 왕이 보내어 시므이를 불러서 이르되 너는 예루살렘에서 너를 위하여 집을 짓고 거기서 살고 어디든지 나가지 말라
And the king sent and called for Shimei , and said unto him, Build thee an house in Jerusalem , and dwell there, and go not forth thence any whither .
37. 너는 분명히 알라 네가 나가서 기드론 시내를 건너는 날에는 정녕 죽임을 당하리니 네 피가 네 머리로 돌아가리라
For it shall be, that on the day thou goest out , and passest over the brook Kidron , thou shalt know for certain that thou shalt surely die : thy blood shall be upon thine own head .
38. 시므이가 왕께 대답하되 이 말씀이 좋사오니 내 주 왕의 말씀대로 종이 그리하겠나이다 하고 이에 날이 오래도록 예루살렘에 머무니라
And Shimei said unto the king , The saying is good : as my lord the king hath said , so will thy servant do . And Shimei dwelt in Jerusalem many days .
39. 삼 년 후에 시므이의 두 종이 가드 왕 마아가의 아들 아기스에게로 도망하여 간지라 혹이 시므이에게 고하여 가로되 당신의 종이 가드에 있나이다
And it came to pass at the end of three years , that two of the servants of Shimei ran away unto Achish son of Maachah king of Gath . And they told Shimei , saying , Behold, thy servants be in Gath .
40. 시므이가 그 종을 찾으려고 일어나 그 나귀에 안장을 지우고 가드로 가서 아기스에게 나아가 그 종을 가드에서 데려왔더니
And Shimei arose , and saddled his ass , and went to Gath to Achish to seek his servants : and Shimei went , and brought his servants from Gath .
41. 시므이가 예루살렘에서부터 가드에 갔다가 돌아온 일을 혹이 솔로몬에게 고한지라
And it was told Solomon that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath , and was come again .
42. 왕이 사람을 보내어 시므이를 불러서 이르되 내가 너로 여호와를 가리켜 맹세하게 하고 경계하여 이르기를 너는 분명히 알라 네가 밖으로 나가서 어디든지 가는 날에는 죽임을 당하리라 하지 아니하였느냐 너도 내게 말하기를 내가 들은 말씀이 좋으니이다 하였거늘
And the king sent and called for Shimei , and said unto him, Did I not make thee to swear by the Lord , and protested unto thee, saying , Know for a certain , on the day thou goest out , and walkest abroad any whither , that thou shalt surely die ? and thou saidst unto me, The word that I have heard is good .
43. 네가 어찌하여 여호와를 가리켜 한 맹세와 내가 네게 이른 명령을 지키지 아니하였느냐
Why then hast thou not kept the oath of the Lord , and the commandment that I have charged thee with?
44. 왕이 또 시므이에게 이르되 네가 무릇 네 마음의 아는 모든 악 곧 내 부친에게 행한바를 네가 스스로 아나니 여호와께서 네 악을 네 머리로 돌려 보내시리라
The king said moreover to Shimei , Thou knowest all the wickedness which thine heart is privy to , that thou didst to David my father : therefore the Lord shall return thy wickedness upon thine own head ;
45. 그러나 솔로몬 왕은 복을 받고 다윗의 위는 영원히 여호와 앞에서 견고히 서리라 하고
And king Solomon shall be blessed , and the throne of David shall be established before the Lord for ever .
46. 여호야다의 아들 브나야에게 명하매 저가 나가서 시므이를 쳐서 죽게 한지라 이에 나라가 솔로몬의 손에 견고하여지니라
So the king commanded Benaiah the son of Jehoiada ; which went out , and fell upon him, that he died . And the kingdom was established in the hand of Solomon .

【왕상2:1 JFB】왕상2:1-11. David Dies.
1. David … charged Solomon his son—The charge recorded here was given to Solomon just before his death and is different from the farewell address delivered in public some time before (대상28:2-9). It is introduced with great solemnity.
【왕상2:1 CWC】[THE CORONATION OF SOLOMON]
1. The Occasion for it, 1:10.
The incident in the first four verses is recorded not for itself, but because of what grew out of it in Adonijah's case (2:13-25). It was a custom in the Orient, and still is, to do this for hygienic reasons on the supposition "that the inhalation of young breath will give new vigor to a worn-out frame." The event shows that Abishag was made a concubine or secondary wife to the king (2:22).
Adonijah, doubtless, felt some justification for his conduct in that he was now the eldest son of David (삼하3:4), and no public intimation had been made as to the successor on the throne. Moreover, his father seems to have indulged him in certain liberties (v. 6).
For the history of Zadok and Benaiah see 2 Samuel, 8:17; 15:24; 21:53 and 8:18; 20:23. With Nathan we have met (2 Sam. 7). There was something ominous in the omission of these men from Adonijah's feast (v. 10).
2. The Way of Procedure, 1:11-40.
Bathsheba was a capable woman, for it is inferred from verse 17 that she had great influence with the king. Nathan must have known of the promise spoken of and been aware of its harmony with the divine will to explain his action (vv. 11-27).
3. The Earliest Results, 1:41-2:46.
(4) Adonijah (1:50-53, 2:13-25). The four corners of the altar of burnt offering to which sacrifices were bound, were symbols of salvation and considered as a sanctuary for all except certain classes of offenders (출21:14). Adonijah's offense was rebellion, but he is spared on the conditions named. Unhappily, however, he violates them and, apparently instigated by Joab and Abiathar (v. 22), adopts a course which, according to eastern ideas, was of dangerous consequence to the state.
(2) Abiathar (vv. 26, 27). The punishment of the priest follows that of the usurper. (Note the fulfillment of 삼상2:30).
(3) Joab (vv. 28-34). The crimes of this military leader merited death, according to the divine law (민35:22) which would have been visited upon him earlier, no doubt, had it not been for his power with the army. Compare David's words in 삼하3:28, 29.
(4) Shimei (vv. 36-46). By the death of this man all the leaders of factions inimical to Solomon were cut off, which explains the last sentence of the chapter.

God promised David that the Messiah should come from his descendants, and that promise was absolute; but the promise, that there should not fail of them a man on the throne of Israel, was conditional; if he walks before God in sincerity, with zeal and resolution: in order hereunto, he must take heed to his way. (1Ki 2:5-11)

be thou strong, … show thyself a man—This counsel is similar to the apostolic direction (고전16:13) and refers to the fortitude or strength of mind that was required to discharge the onerous functions of king.
【왕상2:3 JFB】3. keep the charge of the Lord thy God—that is, the divine law in all its ceremonial as well as moral requirements. But particular reference was intended to its political institutions, as it was only by strictly maintaining the conduct that became the Hebrew monarch (신17:10-20), that he would secure the blessing of peace and prosperity to his reign (see on 신4:5; 신29:10).
【왕상2:4 JFB】4. there shall not fail thee … a man on the throne of Israel—a reference to the promise made to David of the sovereignty being vested perpetually in his lineage (삼하7:11-16), which was confirmed to Solomon afterwards (see 왕상9:5), and repeated with reference to its spiritual meaning long after (렘33:17).
【왕상2:5 JFB】5, 6. thou knowest also what Joab … did—The insolent and imperious conduct of that general had not only been deeply offensive to the feelings (삼하18:5-15; 19:5-7), but calculated to bring reproach on the character, to injure the prospects, and endanger the throne of David. Passing over the injuries committed directly against himself, David dwelt with strong feelings on the base assassination of Abner and Amasa.
shed the blood of war in peace, &c.—The obvious meaning is, that in peace he acted towards them as if they had been in a state of warfare; but perhaps these graphic expressions might be designed to impress Solomon's mind more strongly with a sense of the malice, treachery, and cruelty by which those murders were characterized.
【왕상2:5 MHCC】These dying counsels concerning Joab and Shimei, did not come from personal anger, but for the security of Solomon's throne, which was the murders he had committed, but would readily repeat them to carry any purpose; though long reprieved, he shall be reckoned with at last. Time does not wear out the guilt of any sin, particularly of murder. Concerning Shimei, Hold him not guiltless; do not think him any true friend to thee, or thy government, or fit to be trusted; he has no less malice now than he had then. David's dying sentiments are recorded, as delivered under the influence of the Holy Ghost, 삼하23:1–7. The Lord discovered to him the offices and the salvation of that glorious personage, the Messiah, whose coming he then foretold, and from whom he derived all his comforts and expectations. That passage gives a decided proof that David died under the influence of the Holy Ghost, in the exercise of faith and hope.
【왕상2:6 JFB】6. Do … according to thy wisdom—Joab's immense popularity with the army required that any proceedings instituted against him should be taken with great prudence and deliberation.
【왕상2:8 JFB】8. thou hast with thee Shimei—Though David promised him a pardon, which being enforced by the presence of a thousand followers, could not have been well refused, he warned his son against Shimei as a turbulent and dangerous character. It must not be supposed that in these dying instructions David was evincing a fierce, vindictive spirit. He is rather to be considered as acting in the character of a king and magistrate, in noticing crimes which he had not been in a condition to punish, and pointing out persons of whom Solomon would be under a necessity to rid himself as dangerous to the state. The grateful mention of Barzillai's kindness [왕상2:7] was, however, a personal feeling that does honor to the warmth of his heart; and his silence as to Mephibosheth, the son of his beloved Jonathan, would imply the previous death of that prince.
【왕상2:9 JFB】9. for thou art a wise man—Solomon had given early indications of wisdom before his miraculous endowment with the heavenly gift (see 왕상3:11), and his own sagacity would dictate the course that should be followed in any new offense that Shimei might commit.
【왕상2:10 JFB】10. So David slept with his fathers—about six months after the coronation of Solomon (compare 삼하5:5 with 대상29:27). The interval was spent in developing his ideas and plans for the future glory of the kingdom and providing for the permanent worship of God (see on 대상22:1, and following).
was buried in the city of David—Sepulchres were not allowed within the precincts of cities. Jerusalem, however, formed an exception; and yet, even there, the privilege was reserved chiefly for the royal family (행2:29). Tradition says that the bones of David repose on Mount Zion, and the minaret of a small mosque points out the spot which tradition has fixed. His was a noble, a wondrous, and a humbling history. He was a good man, yet his life was deformed by various crimes of a very gross character. But there were many bright and noble traits in his character; he was an earnest lover of the divine law; his reign was signalized by many important services that contributed to the glory of God and the exaltation of His kingdom; and his name, as the sweet Psalmist of Israel, will be held in honor to the latest age of the Church.

12. Then sat Solomon upon the throne of David his father—His ascension to the royal dignity was made under the happiest auspices. Having been born after his father became monarch of the whole kingdom, his claim, according to the notions of Oriental people, was preferable to that of all, even his elder brothers. The Hebrew kingdom enjoyed internal prosperity; it was respected and renowned abroad, and Solomon well knew how to improve these advantages.
【왕상2:12 MHCC】Solomon received Bathsheba with all the respect that was owing to a mother; but let none be asked for that which they ought not to grant. It ill becomes a good man to prefer a bad request, or to appear in a bad cause. According to eastern customs it was plain that Adonijah sought to be king, by his asking for Abishag as his wife, and Solomon could not be safe while he lived. Ambitious, turbulent spirits commonly prepare death for themselves. Many a head has been lost by catching at a crown.

Adonijah … came to Bath-sheba—Her question to him betrays an apprehension which his recent conduct might well warrant; but his pious acknowledgment of the divine will seemed apparently to indicate so entire an acquiescence in the settlement of the succession [왕상2:15], that, in her womanly simplicity, she perceived not the deep cunning and evil design that was concealed under his request and readily undertook to promote his wishes.

Bath-sheba … went unto King Solomon—The filial reverence and the particular act of respect, which Solomon rendered, were quite in accordance with the sentiments and customs of the East. The right hand is the place of honor; and as it expressly said to have been assigned to "the king's mother," it is necessary to remark that, when a husband dies, his widow acquires a higher dignity and power, as a mother over her son, than she ever possessed before. Besides, the dignity of "king's mother" is a state office, to which certain revenues are attached. The holder has a separate palace or court, as well as possesses great influence in public affairs; and as the dignity is held for life, it sometimes happens, in consequence of deaths, that the person enjoying it may not be related to the reigning sovereign by natural maternity. Bath-sheba had evidently been invested with this honorable office.
【왕상2:22 JFB】22. why dost thou ask Abishag … ask for him the kingdom also—(See on 삼하16:5; also see on 삼하12:8). Solomon's indignation was roused; he in a moment penetrated the artful scheme, and from his associating the names of Abiathar and Joab, he seems to have suspected or known that those deep schemers had been the prompters of Adonijah.

if Adonijah have not spoken this word against his own life—Whether there was a treasonable design to conceal under this request or not, the act, according to Eastern notions, was criminal, and of dangerous consequence to the state. There is no ground of censure upon Solomon for cruelty or precipitation in this instance. He had pardoned Adonijah's former conspiracy; but this new attempt was rebellion against the viceroy appointed by the divine King and called for condign punishment. The office of executioner was among the Hebrews, as in other ancient countries of the East, performed unceremoniously and privately—often without any previous warning—by the captain of the guard, or one of his officers (마14:10).
【왕상2:26 JFB】26, 27. unto Abiathar the priest said the king—This functionary, as the counsellor or accomplice of Adonijah, had deserved to share his fate. But partly from regard to his priestly dignity, and partly from his long associations with the late king, Solomon pronounced on him the mitigated sentence of banishment to his country estate at Anathoth, and thereby, as God's vicegerent, deprived him of his office and its emoluments. The sacred writer notices the remarkable fulfilment, Abiathar's degradation from the high priesthood (see on 왕상4:4), of the doom denounced against the house of Eli (삼상2:30).
【왕상2:26 MHCC】Solomon's words to Abiathar, and his silence, imply that some recent conspiracies had been entered into. Those that show kindness to God's people shall have it remembered to their advantage. For this reason Solomon spares Abiathar's life, but dismisses him from his offices. In case of such sins as the blood of beasts would atone for, the altar was a refuge, but not in Joab's case. Solomon looks upward to God as the Author of peace, and forward to eternity as the perfection of it. The Lord of peace himself gives us that peace which is everlasting.

28. Then tidings came to Joab—The execution of these sentences respectively on Adonijah and Abiathar prepared Joab for his fate. Death, due to his great crimes (민35:33), would long ago have been inflicted, had not his power and popularity with the army been too formidable for the old king. He now fled to the altar, which, though a recognized asylum, afforded no sanctuary to the rebel and murderer (출21:14). And, as he refused to leave it, he seems to have cherished some faint hope that a religious scruple would have been felt at the thought of violating the sanctity of the place by bloodshed. Benaiah, not liking to assume any responsibility, referred the matter to Solomon, who determined that the law should take its course (신19:13).

34. Benaiah … went up, and fell upon him—According to the terms of the statute (출21:14), and the practice in similar cases (왕하11:15), the criminal was to be dragged from the altar and slain elsewhere. But the truth is, that the sanctity of the altar was violated as much by the violence used in forcing the criminal from the place as in shedding his blood there; the express command of God authorized the former and therefore by implication permitted the latter.
was buried in his own house—or family vault, at his property in the wilderness of Judah. His interment was included in the king's order, as enjoined in the divine law (신21:23).
【왕상2:35 MHCC】The old malignity remains in the unconverted heart, and a watchful eye should be kept on those who, like Shimei, have manifested their enmity, but have given no evidence of repentance. No engagements or dangers will restrain worldly men; they go on, though they forfeit their lives and souls. Let us remember, God will not accommodate his judgment to us. His eye is over us; and let us strive to walk as in his presence. Let our every act, word, and thought, be governed by this great truth, that the hour is quickly coming when the smallest circumstances of our lives shall be brought to light, and our eternal state be fixed by a righteous and unerring God. Thus Solomon's throne was established in peace, as the type of the Redeemer's kingdom of peace and righteousness. And it is a comfort, in reference to the enmity of the church's enemies, that, how much soever they rage, it is a vain thing they imagine. Christ's throne is established, and they cannot shake it.
【왕상2:36 JFB】36. the king sent and called for Shimei—He was probably residing at Bahurim, his native place. But, as he was a suspicious character, Solomon condemned him henceforth to live in Jerusalem, on the penalty of death, for going without the gates. He submitted to this confinement for three years, when, violating his oath, he was arrested and put to death by Solomon for perjury, aggravated by his former crime of high treason against David [왕상2:42-44].
