1. 여호와의 노하신 매로 인하여 고난 당한 자는 내로다
I am the man that hath seen affliction by the rod of his wrath .

He was unto me as a bear lying in wait , and as a lion in secret places .

He hath turned aside my ways , and pulled me in pieces : he hath made me desolate .

He hath caused the arrows of his quiver to enter into my reins .

I was a derision to all my people ; and their song all the day .

He hath also broken my teeth with gravel stones , he hath covered me with ashes .
17. 주께서 내 심령으로 평강을 멀리 떠나게 하시니 내가 복을 잊어버렸음이여
And thou hast removed my soul far off from peace : I forgat prosperity .
18. 스스로 이르기를 나의 힘과 여호와께 대한 내 소망이 끊어졌다 하였도다
And I said , My strength and my hope is perished from the Lord :
19. 내 고초와 재난 곧 쑥과 담즙을 기억하소서
Remembering mine affliction and my misery , the wormwood and the gall .
20. 내 심령이 그것을 기억하고 낙심이 되오나
My soul hath them still in remembrance , and is humbled in me.
21. 중심에 회상한즉 오히려 소망이 있사옴은
This I recall to my mind , therefore have I hope .
22. 여호와의 자비와 긍휼이 무궁하시므로 우리가 진멸되지 아니함이니이다
It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed , because his compassions fail not.
23. 이것이 아침마다 새로우니 주의 성실이 크도소이다
They are new every morning : great is thy faithfulness .
24. 내 심령에 이르기를 여호와는 나의 기업이시니 그러므로 내가 저를 바라리라 하도다
The Lord is my portion , saith my soul ; therefore will I hope in him.
25. 무릇 기다리는 자에게나 구하는 영혼에게 여호와께서 선을 베푸시는도다
The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.
26. 사람이 여호와의 구원을 바라고 잠잠히 기다림이 좋도다
It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord .
27. 사람이 젊었을 때에 멍에를 메는 것이 좋으니
It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth .
28. 혼자 앉아서 잠잠할 것은 주께서 그것을 메우셨음이라
He sitteth alone and keepeth silence , because he hath borne it upon him.
29. 입을 티끌에 댈지어다 혹시 소망이 있을지로다
He putteth his mouth in the dust ; if so be there may be hope .
30. 때리는 자에게 뺨을 향하여 수욕으로 배불릴지어다
He giveth his cheek to him that smiteth him: he is filled full with reproach .
31. 이는 주께서 영원토록 버리지 않으실 것임이며
For the Lord will not cast off for ever :
32. 저가 비록 근심케 하시나 그 풍부한 자비대로 긍휼히 여기실 것임이니라
But though he cause grief , yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies .
33. 주께서 인생으로 고생하며 근심하게 하심이 본심이 아니시로다
For he doth not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men .

To crush under his feet all the prisoners of the earth ,

To subvert a man in his cause , the Lord approveth not.
37. 주의 명령이 아니면 누가 능히 말하여 이루게 하라
Who is he that saith , and it cometh to pass, when the Lord commandeth it not?
38. 화, 복이 지극히 높으신 자의 입으로 나오지 아니하느냐
Out of the mouth of the most High proceedeth not evil and good ?
39. 살아 있는 사람은 자기 죄로 벌을 받나니 어찌 원망하랴
Wherefore doth a living man complain , a man for the punishment of his sins ?
40. 우리가 스스로 행위를 조사하고 여호와께로 돌아가자
Let us search and try our ways , and turn again to the Lord .
41. 마음과 손을 아울러 하늘에 계신 하나님께 들자
Let us lift up our heart with our hands unto God in the heavens .
42. 우리의 범죄함과 패역함을 주께서 사하지 아니하시고
We have transgressed and have rebelled : thou hast not pardoned .
43. 진노로 스스로 가리우시고 우리를 군축하시며 살륙하사 긍휼을 베풀지 아니하셨나이다
Thou hast covered with anger , and persecuted us: thou hast slain , thou hast not pitied .
44. 주께서 구름으로 스스로 가리우사 기도로 상달치 못하게 하시고
Thou hast covered thyself with a cloud , that our prayer should not pass through .
45. 우리를 열방 가운데서 진개와 폐물을 삼으셨으므로
Thou hast made us as the offscouring and refuse in the midst of the people .
46. 우리의 모든 대적이 우리를 향하여 입을 크게 벌렸나이다
All our enemies have opened their mouths against us.
47. 두려움과 함정과 잔해와 멸망이 우리에게 임하였도다
Fear and a snare is come upon us, desolation and destruction .
48. 처녀 내 백성의 파멸을 인하여 내 눈에 눈물이 시내처럼 흐르도다
Mine eye runneth down with rivers of water for the destruction of the daughter of my people .

Mine eye trickleth down , and ceaseth not, without any intermission ,

Till the Lord look down , and behold from heaven .

Mine eye affecteth mine heart because of all the daughters of my city .

Mine enemies chased me sore , like a bird , without cause .
53. 저희가 내 생명을 끊으려고 나를 구덩이에 넣고 그 위에 돌을 던짐이여
They have cut off my life in the dungeon , and cast a stone upon me.
54. 물이 내 머리에 넘치니 내가 스스로 이르기를 이제는 멸절되었다 하도다
Waters flowed over mine head ; then I said , I am cut off .
55. 여호와여 내가 심히 깊은 구덩이에서 주의 이름을 불렀나이다
I called upon thy name , O Lord , out of the low dungeon .

Thou hast heard my voice : hide not thine ear at my breathing , at my cry .

Thou drewest near in the day that I called upon thee: thou saidst , Fear not.

62. 곧 일어나 나를 치는 자의 입술에서 나오는 것과 종일 모해하는 것을 들으셨나이다
The lips of those that rose up against me, and their device against me all the day .
63. 저희가 앉든지 서든지 나를 노래하는 것을 주여 보옵소서
Behold their sitting down , and their rising up ; I am their musick .
64. 여호와여 주께서 저의 손으로 행한 대로 보응하사
Render unto them a recompence , O Lord , according to the work of their hands .

Give them sorrow of heart , thy curse unto them.

【애3:1 JFB】애3:1-66.
Jeremiah proposes his own experience under afflictions, as an example as to how the Jews should behave under theirs, so as to have hope of a restoration; hence the change from singular to plural (애3:22, 40-47). The stanzas consist of three lines, each of which begins with the same Hebrew letter.

1-3. seen affliction—his own in the dungeon of Malchiah (렘38:6); that of his countrymen also in the siege. Both were types of that of Christ.
【애3:1 CWC】"The touching significance of this book lies in the fact that it is the disclosure of the love and sorrow of Jehovah for the very people He is chastening -- a sorrow wrought by the Spirit in the heart of Jeremiah. Compare 렘13:7; 마23:36-38: 롬9:1-5." -- Scofield Reference Bible.
"As regards its external structure, the composition of the book, both as a whole and in its several parts, is so artistic, that anything like it can hardly be found in any other book of Holy Scriptures." -- Lange's Commentary.
In the first place it contains just five songs, each limited to a single chapter. In the second place, there is a marked climax in the third song, with an ascent and a descent, a crescendo and decrescendo movement before and after it. About the middle of this song at verse eighteen, the prophet seems to have reached the deepest night of his misery, "but where the exigency is greatest, help is nearest. The night is succeeded by the morning (vv. 19-21), and with verse 22 breaks the full day."
Each of the songs contains 22 verses according to the number of letters in the Hebrew alphabet; in other words, it is an acrostic -- a favorite form of Hebrew poetry. But In the third song each verse is divided into three members making in our English setting 66 verses. Other of its poetical features we can not dwell upon.
Analysis of the Chapters.
In chapter 1 the lament is over the ruin of Jerusalem and Judah, and is divided into two parts of equal length. The first is a description of the city, and the second the lamentation strictly considered. In both the speaker is the prophet himself (or an ideal person like the daughter of Zion, for example).
In chapter 2, the lament is over the destruction of the city, which is described and attributed to Jehovah. This also is in two nearly even sections. Verses 1-10 describe the judgment; verses 12-22 is the lamentation proper.
In chapter 3 is the climax where Israel's brighter day is contrasted with the gloomy night of sorrow experienced by the prophet himself. There are three parts in this chapter, divided as follows: Verses 1-18, 19-42, 43-66.
In chapter 4, Zion's guilt and punishment are described, the whole consisting of four parts which will be readily distinguished as verses 1-6; 7-11; 12-16; 17-22.
In chapter 5, the distress and hope of the prisoners and fugitives are expressed in the form of a prayer. Here the author lets the people speak, not as an ideal person but in the first person plural as a concrete multitude. There is an introduction (v. 1), two principal parts, verses 2-7 and 8-16, and a conclusion, verses 17-22.

Golden Texts.
There are some richly laden verses in this beautiful book, full of comfort and instruction for the saint and of homiletic value to the preacher. We indicate a few: 1:12; 1:16; 2:13; 2:14; 3:21-26; 3:31-33; 3:37; 3:39-41; 5:7; 5:16-17; 5:21.
【애3:1 MHCC】 The faithful lament their calamities, and hope in God's mercies.
애3:1-20 The prophet relates the more gloomy and discouraging part of his experience, and how he found support and relief. In the time of his trial the Lord had become terrible to him. It was an affliction that was misery itself; for sin makes the cup of affliction a bitter cup. The struggle between unbelief and faith is often very severe. But the weakest believer is wrong, if he thinks that his strength and hope are perished from the Lord.
애3:21-36 Having stated his distress and temptation, the prophet shows how he was raised above it. Bad as things are, it is owing to the mercy of God that they are not worse. We should observe what makes for us, as well as what is against us. God's compassions fail not; of this we have fresh instances every morning. Portions on earth are perishing things, but God is a portion for ever. It is our duty, and will be our comfort and satisfaction, to hope and quietly to wait for the salvation of the Lord. Afflictions do and will work very much for good: many have found it good to bear this yoke in their youth; it has made many humble and serious, and has weaned them from the world, who otherwise would have been proud and unruly. If tribulation work patience, that patience will work experience, and that experience a hope that makes not ashamed. Due thoughts of the evil of sin, and of our own sinfulness, will convince us that it is of the Lord's mercies we are not consumed. If we cannot say with unwavering voice, The Lord is my portion; may we not say, I desire to have Him for my portion and salvation, and in his word do I hope? Happy shall we be, if we learn to receive affliction as laid upon us by the hand of God.
애3:37-41 While there is life there is hope; and instead of complaining that things are bad, we should encourage ourselves with the hope they will be better. We are sinful men, and what we complain of, is far less than our sins deserve. We should complain to God, and not of him. We are apt, in times of calamity, to reflect on other people's ways, and blame them; but our duty is to search and try our own ways, that we may turn from evil to God. Our hearts must go with our prayers. If inward impressions do not answer to outward expressions, we mock God, and deceive ourselves.
애3:42-54 The more the prophet looked on the desolations, the more he was grieved. Here is one word of comfort. While they continued weeping, they continued waiting; and neither did nor would expect relief and succour from any but the Lord.
애3:55-66 Faith comes off conqueror, for in these verses the prophet concludes with some comfort. Prayer is the breath of the new man, drawing in the air of mercy in petitions, and returning it in praises; it proves and maintains the spiritual life. He silenced their fears, and quieted their spirits. Thou saidst, Fear not. This was the language of God's grace, by the witness of his Spirit with their spirits. And what are all our sorrows, compared with those of the Redeemer? He will deliver his people from every trouble, and revive his church from every persecution. He will save believers with everlasting salvation, while his enemies perish with everlasting destruction.

alone—The heathen applauded magnanimity, but they looked to display and the praise of men. The child of God, in the absence of any witness, "alone," silently submits to the will of God.
borne it upon him—that is, because he is used to bearing it on him. Rather, "because He (the Lord, 애3:26) hath laid it on him" [Vatablus].

if so be there may be hope—This does not express doubt as to whether God be willing to receive the penitent, but the penitent's doubt as to himself; he whispers to himself this consolation, "Perhaps there may be hope for me."

Jeremiah here anticipates and answers the objections which the Jews might start, that it was by His connivance they were "crushed under the feet" of those who "turned aside the right of a man." God approves (literally, "seeth," 합1:13; so "behold," "look on," that is, look on with approval) not of such unrighteous acts; and so the Jews may look for deliverance and the punishment of their foes.
