■ 신명기 11장
1. 그런즉 네 하나님 여호와를 사랑하여 그 직임과 법도와 규례와 명령을 항상 지키라
Therefore thou shalt love the Lord thy God , and keep his charge , and his statutes , and his judgments , and his commandments , alway .
2. 너희의 자녀는 알지도 못하고 보지도 못하였으나 너희가 오늘날 기억할 것은 너희 하나님 여호와의 징계와 그 위엄과 그 강한 손과 펴신 팔과
And know ye this day : for I speak not with your children which have not known , and which have not seen the chastisement of the Lord your God , his greatness , his mighty hand , and his stretched out arm ,

And his miracles , and his acts , which he did in the midst of Egypt unto Pharaoh the king of Egypt , and unto all his land ;
4. 또 여호와께서 애굽 군대와 그 말과 그 병거에 행하신 일 곧 그들이 너희를 따를 때에 홍해 물로 그들을 덮어 멸하사 오늘까지 이른 것과
And what he did unto the army of Egypt , unto their horses , and to their chariots ; how he made the water of the Red sea to overflow them as they pursued after you, and how the Lord hath destroyed them unto this day ;
5. 또 너희가 이곳에 이르기까지 광야에서 너희에게 행하신 일과
And what he did unto you in the wilderness , until ye came into this place ;

And what he did unto Dathan and Abiram , the sons of Eliab , the son of Reuben : how the earth opened her mouth , and swallowed them up , and their households , and their tents , and all the substance that was in their possession , in the midst of all Israel :
7. 너희가 여호와의 행하신 이 모든 큰 일을 목도하였느니라
But your eyes have seen all the great acts of the Lord which he did .
8. 그러므로 너희는 내가 오늘날 너희에게 명하는 모든 명령을 지키라 그리하면 너희가 강성할 것이요 너희가 건너가서 얻을 땅에 들어가서 그것을 얻을 것이며
Therefore shall ye keep all the commandments which I command you this day , that ye may be strong , and go in and possess the land , whither ye go to possess it;
9. 또 여호와께서 너희의 열조에게 맹세하사 그와 그 후손에게 주리라고 하신 땅 곧 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅에서 너희의 날이 장구하리라
And that ye may prolong your days in the land , which the Lord sware unto your fathers to give unto them and to their seed , a land that floweth with milk and honey .
10. 네가 들어가 얻으려 하는 땅은 네가 나온 애굽 땅과 같지 아니하니 거기서는 너희가 파종한 후에 발로 물대기를 채소 밭에 댐과 같이 하였거니와
For the land , whither thou goest in to possess it, is not as the land of Egypt , from whence ye came out , where thou sowedst thy seed , and wateredst it with thy foot , as a garden of herbs :
11. 너희가 건너가서 얻을 땅은 산과 골짜기가 있어서 하늘에서 내리는 비를 흡수하는 땅이요
But the land , whither ye go to possess it, is a land of hills and valleys , and drinketh water of the rain of heaven :
12. 네 하나님 여호와께서 권고하시는 땅이라 세초부터 세말까지 네 하나님 여호와의 눈이 항상 그 위에 있느니라
A land which the Lord thy God careth for : the eyes of the Lord thy God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year even unto the end of the year .

13. 내가 오늘날 너희에게 명하는 나의 명령을 너희가 만일 청종하고 너희의 하나님 여호와를 사랑하여 마음을 다하고 성품을 다하여 섬기면
And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day , to love the Lord your God , and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul ,
14. 여호와께서 너희 땅에 이른비, 늦은비를 적당한 때에 내리시리니 너희가 곡식과 포도주와 기름을 얻을 것이요
That I will give you the rain of your land in his due season , the first rain and the latter rain , that thou mayest gather in thy corn , and thy wine , and thine oil .
15. 또 육축을 위하여 들에 풀이 나게 하시리니 네가 먹고 배부를 것이라
And I will send grass in thy fields for thy cattle , that thou mayest eat and be full .
16. 너희는 스스로 삼가라 두렵건대 마음에 미혹하여 돌이켜 다른 신들을 섬기며 그것에 절하므로
Take heed to yourselves, that your heart be not deceived , and ye turn aside , and serve other gods , and worship them;
17. 여호와께서 너희에게 진노하사 하늘을 닫아 비를 내리지 아니하여 땅으로 소산을 내지 않게 하시므로 너희가 여호와의 주신 아름다운 땅에서 속히 멸망할까 하노라
And then the Lord’s wrath be kindled against you, and he shut up the heaven , that there be no rain , and that the land yield not her fruit ; and lest ye perish quickly from off the good land which the Lord giveth you.
18. 이러므로 너희는 나의 이 말을 너희 마음과 뜻에 두고 또 그것으로 너희 손목에 매어 기호를 삼고 너희 미간에 붙여 표를 삼으며
Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul , and bind them for a sign upon your hand , that they may be as frontlets between your eyes .
19. 또 그것을 너희의 자녀에게 가르치며 집에 앉았을 때에든지, 길에 행할 때에든지, 누웠을 때에든지, 일어날 때에든지 이 말씀을 강론하고
And ye shall teach them your children , speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house , and when thou walkest by the way , when thou liest down, and when thou risest up .
20. 또 네 집 문설주와 바깥 문에 기록하라
And thou shalt write them upon the door posts of thine house , and upon thy gates :
21. 그리하면 여호와께서 너희 열조에게 주리라고 맹세하신 땅에서 너희의 날과 너희 자녀의 날이 많아서 하늘이 땅을 덮는 날의 장구함 같으리라
That your days may be multiplied , and the days of your children , in the land which the Lord sware unto your fathers to give them, as the days of heaven upon the earth .
22. 너희가 만일 내가 너희에게 명하는 이 모든 명령을 잘 지켜 행하여 너희 하나님 여호와를 사랑하고 그 모든 도를 행하여 그에게 부종하면
For if ye shall diligently keep all these commandments which I command you, to do them, to love the Lord your God , to walk in all his ways , and to cleave unto him;
23. 여호와께서 그 모든 나라 백성을 너희 앞에서 다 쫓아내실 것이라 너희가 너희보다 강대한 나라들을 얻을 것인즉
Then will the Lord drive out all these nations from before you, and ye shall possess greater nations and mightier than yourselves.
24. 너희의 발바닥으로 밟는 곳은 다 너희 소유가 되리니 너희의 경계는 곧 광야에서부터 레바논까지와 유브라데 하수라 하는 하수에서 서해까지라
Every place whereon the soles of your feet shall tread shall be yours: from the wilderness and Lebanon , from the river , the river Euphrates , even unto the uttermost sea shall your coast be.
25. 너희 하나님 여호와께서 너희에게 말씀하신 대로 너희 밟는 모든 땅 사람들로 너희를 두려워하고 무서워하게 하시리니 너희를 능히 당할 사람이 없으리라
There shall no man be able to stand before you: for the Lord your God shall lay the fear of you and the dread of you upon all the land that ye shall tread upon, as he hath said unto you.
26. 내가 오늘날 복과 저주를 너희 앞에 두나니
Behold , I set before you this day a blessing and a curse ;
27. 너희가 만일 내가 오늘날 너희에게 명하는 너희 하나님 여호와의 명령을 들으면 복이 될 것이요
A blessing , if ye obey the commandments of the Lord your God , which I command you this day :
28. 너희가 만일 내가 오늘날 너희에게 명하는 도에서 돌이켜 떠나 너희 하나님 여호와의 명령을 듣지 아니하고 본래 알지 못하던 다른 신들을 좇으면 저주를 받으리라
And a curse , if ye will not obey the commandments of the Lord your God , but turn aside out of the way which I command you this day , to go after other gods , which ye have not known .
29. 네 하나님 여호와께서 네가 가서 얻을 땅으로 너를 인도하여 들이실 때에 너는 그리심 산에서 축복을 선포하고 에발 산에서 저주를 선포하라
And it shall come to pass, when the Lord thy God hath brought thee in unto the land whither thou goest to possess it, that thou shalt put the blessing upon mount Gerizim , and the curse upon mount Ebal .
30. 이 두 산은 요단강 저편 곧 해 지는 편으로 가는 길 뒤 길갈 맞은편 모레 상수리나무 곁의 아라바에 거하는 가나안 족속의 땅에 있지 아니하냐
Are they not on the other side Jordan , by the way where the sun goeth down , in the land of the Canaanites , which dwell in the champaign over against Gilgal , beside the plains of Moreh ?
31. 너희가 요단을 건너 너희 하나님 여호와께서 너희에게 주시는 땅에 들어가서 얻으려 하나니 반드시 그것을 얻어 거기 거할지라
For ye shall pass over Jordan to go in to possess the land which the Lord your God giveth you, and ye shall possess it, and dwell therein.
32. 내가 오늘날 너희 앞에 베푸는 모든 규례와 법도를 너희는 지켜 행할지니라
And ye shall observe to do all the statutes and judgments which I set before you this day .

【신11:1 JFB】신11:1-32. An Exhortation to Obedience.
1. Therefore thou shalt love the Lord thy God, and keep his charge—The reason for the frequent repetition of the same or similar counsels is to be traced to the infantine character and state of the church, which required line upon line and precept upon precept. Besides, the Israelites were a headstrong and perverse people, impatient of control, prone to rebellion, and, from their long stay in Egypt, so violently addicted to idolatry, that they ran imminent risk of being seduced by the religion of the country to which they were going, which, in its characteristic features, bore a strong resemblance to that of the country they had left.

1. Obedience, c. 7.
What were the names of the seven nations of Canaan to be cast out for their iniquity (1)? Who would cast them out, and in what manner is the supernatural character of the act emphasized? Nevertheless, what illustrates the divine use of means (2)? What command is laid on the Israelites in the premises (2, 3)? And why (4)? To what extent should their zeal be exhibited, and why (5, 6)? What shows the choice of Israel to be of grace and not debt (7, 8)?
What shows the blessing of Israel to be grounded on obedience (9-12)? How is the temporal and material character of the blessing illustrated (13-15)? How are the people encouraged (17-21)? What shows God's very particular care for them {22, 23)?
2. Gratitude, c. 8.
What shows that Israel was too small a people to occupy the land at first (1)? Notice in the verses following (2, 3), how their experiences in the wilderness were intended to teach obedience as well as impress them with the goodness of God. What miraculous occurrence is noted in verse 4? Compa계29:5.
What attractive features of the land are named (7-9)? All accounts, speak of the natural beauty and fertility of Palestine, and its great capabilities when properly developed. To be among its brooks, and hills and valleys after passing through the desert, can be appreciated by those who have entered California after crossing the plains.
For the plenteousness of the wheat and barley of Palestine see 마13:8; but these products of the northern regions were equalled by the fruits of the south. "Honey'' is often used indeterminately to signify a syrup of dates or grapes, which was esteemed a great luxury in the east, "Iron" was found in the mountains of Lebanon. The "brass" was not the alloy brass, but copper ore. Compare 대상22:3; 29:2-7; 사60:17.
After mentioning these instances of God's goodness, what arguments are founder upon them in the closing verses? Note the appropriateness of this chapter to be read on Thanksgiving day, and other national holidays.
3. Humility, cc. 9-11.
Notice the description of the Canaanitish cities in v. 1. They are called "great" because of the space they covered. Unlike our cities, the houses stood far apart, with gardens and fields intervening. They were usually fenced, sometimes as high as forty feet, with burnt or sun-dried bricks. It would not be much to demolish such a wall in our day, but such engineering skill was then unknown. Nevertheless, would any obstacle prevent their taking possession?
Would the victory be theirs, or God's? And would He give it to them on the ground of merit (4)? What would move Him in the premises (4, 5)? How does Moses dissuade the people from any idea of their own righteousness (see the remainder of the chapter)? The plainness of Moses' speech and the submission of the people is a strong evidence of the truth of the history. An impostor would have operated on opposite lines.
What instances of unfaithfulness does Moses name? For answer note vv. 12-21, 22, 23. The reference to his humiliation in the last-named verse does not apply to a third experience of the kind, but is a fuller description of the second named in v. 18.
The Bible Commentary has the following on "the brook that descended out of the mount" (21): "Though the Israelites were supplied with water from this rock when they were stationed at Rephidim (Wady Feiran), there is nothing in the narrative which should lead us to suppose that the rock was in the immediate neighborhood of that place (see on 출17:5, 6). The water of this rock was probably the brook that descended from the mount. The water may have flowed many miles from the rock, as the winter torrents do now through the wadys of Arabia Petraea (시78:15, 16). And the rock may have been smitten at such a height, and at a spot bearing such a relation to the Sinaitic valleys, as to furnish supplies of water during the journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir and Kadesh-Barnea (c. 1:1, 2). On this supposition new light is cast on the language of the apostle, when he speaks of 'the rock following' the Israelites (고전10:4)."
The general subject of chapter 9 is extended into chapters 10 and 11.
In chapter 10 note, in verse 4, that it was not Moses who wrote the words on the tables of stone, but God Himself. A professor in one of our universities is quoted as making light of this by inquiring whether God is supposed to have turned stone mason and chiselled these words with His own hand. We can afford to treat such remarks with silence, remembering the words of Scripture that some professing themselves to be wise have become fools (롬1:22).
Note in v. 5, a minute circumstance, the mention of which at the time attests the truth of the record.
Note that vv. 6-9 seem to be inserted out of their place, the explanation of which no one knows. The address of Moses is resumed again at v. 10.
With v. 16 compare 롬2:25, 29 for its New Testament application to the Jew, and 골2:11, to the Christian.
In chapter 11 there is little requiring particular notice. The blessing and the curse (26-32) will be referred to in a later chapter, but just here it may be mentioned that "most signally is the execution of the curse seen in the present sterility of Palestine."

Love will work in obedience, and that only is acceptable obedience which flows from a principle of love, 요일5:3. Moses recounts some of the great and terrible works of God which their eyes had seen. What our eyes have seen, especially in our early days, should affect us, and make us better long afterwards.

I speak not with your children which have not known … But your eyes have seen all the great acts of the Lord which he did—Moses is here giving a brief summary of the marvels and miracles of awful judgment which God had wrought in effecting their release from the tyranny of Pharaoh, as well as those which had taken place in the wilderness. He knew that he might dwell upon these, for he was addressing many who had been witnesses of those appalling incidents. For it will be remembered that the divine threatening that they should die in the wilderness, and its execution, extended only to males from twenty years and upward, who were able to go forth to war. No males under twenty years of age, no females, and none of the tribe of Levi, were objects of the denunciation (see 민14:28-30; 16:49). There might, therefore, have been many thousands of the Israelites at that time of whom Moses could say, "Your eyes have seen all the great acts which He did"; and with regard to those the historic review of Moses was well calculated to stir up their minds to the duty and advantages of obedience.
【신11:8 MHCC】Moses sets before them, for the future, life and death, the blessing and the curse, according as they did or did not keep God's commandment. Sin tends to shorten the days of all men, and to shorten the days of a people's prosperity. God will bless them with an abundance of all good things, if they would love him and serve him. Godliness has the promise of the life that now is; but the favour of God shall put gladness into the heart, more than the increase of corn, and wine, and oil. Revolt from God to idols would certainly be their ruin. Take heed that your hearts be not deceived. All who forsake God to set their affection upon any creature, will find themselves wretchedly deceived, to their own destruction; and this will make it worse, that it was for want of taking heed.

For the land, whither thou goest in to possess it, is not as the land of Egypt, from whence ye came out—The physical features of Palestine present a striking contrast to those of the land of bondage. A widely extending plain forms the cultivated portion of Egypt, and on the greater part of this low and level country rain never falls. This natural want is supplied by the annual overflow of the Nile, and by artificial means from the same source when the river has receded within its customary channel. Close by the bank the process of irrigation is very simple. The cultivator opens a small sluice on the edge of the square bed in which seed has been sown, making drill after drill; and when a sufficient quantity of water has poured in, he shuts it up with his foot. Where the bank is high, the water is drawn up by hydraulic engines, of which there are three kinds used, of different power, according to the subsidence of the stream. The water is distributed in small channels or earthen conduits, simple in construction, worked by the foot, and formed with a mattock by the gardener who directs their course, and which are banked up or opened, as occasion may require, by pressing in the soil with the foot. Thus was the land watered in which the Israelites had dwelt so long. Such vigilance and laborious industry would not be needed in the promised land. Instead of being visited with moisture only at one brief season and left during the rest of the year under a withering blight, every season it would enjoy the benign influences of a genial climate. The hills would attract the frequent clouds, and in the refreshing showers the blessing of God would especially rest upon the land.

【신11:14 JFB】14. the first rain and the latter rain—The early rain commenced in autumn, that is, chiefly during the months of September and October, while the latter rain fell in the spring of the year, that is, during the months of March and April. It is true that occasional showers fell all the winter; but, at the autumnal and vernal seasons, they were more frequent, copious, and important; for the early rain was necessary, after a hot and protracted summer, to prepare the soil for receiving the seed; and the latter rain, which shortly preceded the harvest, was of the greatest use in invigorating the languishing powers of vegetation (렘5:24; Joe 2:23; 암4:7; 약5:7).

I will send grass in thy fields for thy cattle—Undoubtedly the special blessing of the former and the latter rain [신11:14] was one principal cause of the extraordinary fertility of Canaan in ancient times. That blessing was promised to the Israelites as a temporal reward for their fidelity to the national covenant [신11:13]. It was threatened to be withdrawn on their disobedience or apostasy; and most signally is the execution of that threatening seen in the present sterility of Palestine. MR. LowthIAN, an English farmer, who was struck during his journey from Joppa to Jerusalem by not seeing a blade of grass, where even in the poorest localities of Britain some wild vegetation is found, directed his attention particularly to the subject, and pursued the inquiry during a month's residence in Jerusalem, where he learned that a miserably small quantity of milk is daily sold to the inhabitants at a dear rate, and that chiefly asses' milk. "Most clearly," says he, "did I perceive that the barrenness of large portions of the country was owing to the cessation of the early and latter rain, and that the absence of grass and flowers made it no longer the land (신11:9) flowing with milk and honey."

【신11:18 MHCC】Let all be directed by the three rules here given. 1. Let our hearts be filled with the word of God. There will not be good practices in the life, unless there be good thoughts, good affections, and good principles in the heart. 2. Let our eyes be fixed upon the word of God, having constant regard to it as the guide of our way, as the rule of our work, 시119:30. 3. Let our tongues be employed about the word of God. Nor will any thing do more to cause prosperity, and keeping up religion in a nation, than the good education of children.

from the wilderness—the Arabah on the south;

Euphrates—their boundary on the east. Their grant of dominion extended so far, and the right was fulfilled to Solomon.

【신11:26 MHCC】Moses sums up all the arguments for obedience in two words, the blessing and the curse. He charged the people to choose which they would have. Moses then appointed a public and solemn proclamation of the blessing and curse, to be made upon the two mountains of Gerizim and Ebal. We have broken the law, and are under its curse, without remedy from ourselves. In mercy, the gospel again sets before us a blessing and a curse. A blessing, if we obey the call to repentance, to faith in Christ, and newness of heart and life through him; an awful curse, if we neglect so great salvation. Let us thankfully welcome these glad tidings of great joy; and let us not harden our hearts, but hear this voice of God while it is called to-day, and while he invites us to come to him upon a mercy-seat. Let us be diligent to make our calling and election sure.
