Praise ye the Lord : for it is good to sing praises unto our God ; for it is pleasant ; and praise is comely .

The Lord doth build up Jerusalem : he gathereth together the outcasts of Israel .

He healeth the broken in heart , and bindeth up their wounds .

He telleth the number of the stars ; he calleth them all by their names .

Great is our Lord , and of great power : his understanding is infinite .

The Lord lifteth up the meek : he casteth the wicked down to the ground .

Sing unto the Lord with thanksgiving ; sing praise upon the harp unto our God :

Who covereth the heaven with clouds , who prepareth rain for the earth , who maketh grass to grow upon the mountains .

He giveth to the beast his food , and to the young ravens which cry .

He delighteth not in the strength of the horse : he taketh not pleasure in the legs of a man .

The Lord taketh pleasure in them that fear him, in those that hope in his mercy .

  Praise the Lord , O Jerusalem ; praise thy God , O Zion .

For he hath strengthened the bars of thy gates ; he hath blessed thy children within thee.

He maketh peace in thy borders , and filleth thee with the finest of the wheat .

He sendeth forth his commandment upon earth : his word runneth very swiftly .

He giveth snow like wool : he scattereth the hoarfrost like ashes .

He casteth forth his ice like morsels : who can stand before his cold ?

He sendeth out his word , and melteth them: he causeth his wind to blow , and the waters flow .

He sheweth his word unto Jacob , his statutes and his judgments unto Israel .

He hath not dealt so with any nation : and as for his judgments , they have not known them. Praise ye the Lord .

【시147:1 JFB】시147:1-20. This and the remaining Psalms have been represented as specially designed to celebrate the rebuilding of Jerusalem (compare 느6:16; 12:27). They all open and close with the stirring call for praise. This one specially declares God's providential care towards all creatures, and particularly His people.
1. (Compare

【시147:1 CWC】Psalm 135.
Praises God for choosing Jacob (vv. 1-4), extols His power in the natural world (vv. 5-7), and in the deliverance of His people from Egypt (vv. 8, 9) and bringing them into the promised land (vv. 10-12). All this is in contrast to the vanity pf idols (vv. 13-18).
Psalm 136.
Is of the same character as the preceding, but is notable for the chorus attached to each verse -- a chorus with which we have become familiar in other psalms (106:1; 118:1-4), and which may have been used by the people somewhat like the "Amen."
Psalm 137.
Is plainly identified as to its period and design.
Psalm 139.
Is perhaps the most sublime declaration of the omnipresence of God found in the Holy Scriptures. In the light of that attribute the Psalmist is willing to submit himself to the closest scrutinizing (v. 23), and for the reason indicated at the close. Who will follow in his train?
We have now reached another group of David's psalms (138-140) whose structure and style are like some of the earlier ones -- complaint, prayer, hope, praise.
Psalm 142.
Is unique in the historical note attached to it. The "cave" spoken of may have been Adullam (삼상22:1), or Engedi (삼상24:3), but it is not necessary to believe that the psalm was composed while David was in the cave. It may have been written later when his experience in the cave furnished a good illustration of his present need and an argument for his relief.
Psalms 147-150.
Are thought to especially celebrate the rebuilding of Jerusalem, and correspond to the conditions in 느6:16; 12:27 and other places, although their millennial application is not far to seek.
The last psalm is a fitting close to the book, "reciting the place, theme, mode and extent of Jehovah's exalted praise."

【시147:1 MHCC】Praising God is work that is its own wages. It is comely; it becomes us as reasonable creatures, much more as people in covenant with God. He gathers outcast sinners by his grace, and will bring them into his holy habitation. To those whom God heals with the consolations of his Spirit, he speaks peace, assures them their sins are pardoned. And for this, let others praise him also. Man's knowledge is soon ended; but God's knowledge is a dept that can never be fathomed. And while he telleth the number of the stars, he condescends to hear the broken-hearted sinner. While he feeds the young ravens, he will not leave his praying people destitute. Clouds look dull and melancholy, yet without them we could have no rain, therefore no fruit. Thus afflictions look black and unpleasant; but from clouds of affliction come showers that make the soul to yield the peaceable fruits of righteousness. The psalmist delights not in things wherein sinners trust and glory; but a serious and suitable regard to God is, in his sight, of very great price. We are not to be in doubt between hope and fear, but to act under the gracious influences of hope and fear united.

【시147:2 JFB】2. (Compare 시107:3; 사11:12).

【시147:3 JFB】3. Though applicable to the captive Israelites, this is a general and precious truth.
wounds—(Compare Margin).

【시147:4 JFB】4, 5. God's power in nature (사40:26-28, and often) is presented as a pledge of His power to help His people.
telleth … stars—what no man can do (창15:5).

【시147:6 JFB】6. That power is put forth for the good of the meek and suffering pious, and confusion of the wicked (시146:8, 9).

【시147:7 JFB】7-9. His providence supplies bountifully the wild animals in their mountain homes.
Sing … Lord—literally, "Answer the Lord," that is, in grateful praise to His goodness, thus declared in His acts.

【시147:10 JFB】10, 11. The advantages afforded, as in war by the strength of the horse or the agility of man, do not incline God to favor any; but those who fear and, of course, trust Him, will obtain His approbation and aid.

【시147:12 MHCC】The church, like Jerusalem of old, built up and preserved by the wisdom, power, and goodness of God, is exhorted to praise him for all the benefits and blessings vouchsafed to her; and these are represented by his favours in the course of nature. The thawing word may represent the gospel of Christ, and the thawing wind the Spirit of Christ; for the Spirit is compared to the wind, 요3:8. Converting grace softens the heart that was hard frozen, and melts it into tears of repentance, and makes good reflections to flow, which before were chilled and stopped up. The change which the thaw makes is very evident, yet how it is done no one can say. Such is the change wrought in the conversion of a soul, when God's word and Spirit are sent to melt it and restore it to itself.

【시147:13 JFB】13. strengthened … gates—or, means of defense against invaders,

【시147:14 JFB】14. maketh … borders—or, territories (창23:17; 사54:12).
filleth thee, &c.—(Compare Margin).

【시147:15 JFB】15-18. God's Word, as a swift messenger, executes His purpose, for with Him to command is to perform (창1:3; 시33:9), and He brings about the wonders of providence as easily as men cast crumbs.

【시147:17 JFB】17. morsels—used as to food (창18:5), perhaps here denotes hail.

【시147:19 JFB】19, 20. This mighty ruler and benefactor of heaven and earth is such especially to His chosen people, to whom alone (신4:32-34) He has made known His will, while others have been left in darkness. Therefore unite in the great hallelujah.
