【시145:1 JFB】시145:1-21. A Psalm of praise to God for His mighty, righteous, and gracious government of all men, and of His humble and suffering people in particular.
1, 2. (Compare 시30:1).
bless thy name—celebrate Thy perfections (시5:11). God is addressed as king, alluding to His government of men.

【시145:1 CWC】Psalm 135.
Praises God for choosing Jacob (vv. 1-4), extols His power in the natural world (vv. 5-7), and in the deliverance of His people from Egypt (vv. 8, 9) and bringing them into the promised land (vv. 10-12). All this is in contrast to the vanity pf idols (vv. 13-18).
Psalm 136.
Is of the same character as the preceding, but is notable for the chorus attached to each verse -- a chorus with which we have become familiar in other psalms (106:1; 118:1-4), and which may have been used by the people somewhat like the "Amen."
Psalm 137.
Is plainly identified as to its period and design.
Psalm 139.
Is perhaps the most sublime declaration of the omnipresence of God found in the Holy Scriptures. In the light of that attribute the Psalmist is willing to submit himself to the closest scrutinizing (v. 23), and for the reason indicated at the close. Who will follow in his train?
We have now reached another group of David's psalms (138-140) whose structure and style are like some of the earlier ones -- complaint, prayer, hope, praise.
Psalm 142.
Is unique in the historical note attached to it. The "cave" spoken of may have been Adullam (삼상22:1), or Engedi (삼상24:3), but it is not necessary to believe that the psalm was composed while David was in the cave. It may have been written later when his experience in the cave furnished a good illustration of his present need and an argument for his relief.
Psalms 147-150.
Are thought to especially celebrate the rebuilding of Jerusalem, and correspond to the conditions in 느6:16; 12:27 and other places, although their millennial application is not far to seek.
The last psalm is a fitting close to the book, "reciting the place, theme, mode and extent of Jehovah's exalted praise."

【시145:1 MHCC】Those who, under troubles and temptations, abound in fervent prayer, shall in due season abound in grateful praise, which is the true language of holy joy. Especially we should speak of God's wondrous work of redemption, while we declare his greatness. For no deliverance of the Israelites, nor the punishment of sinners, so clearly proclaims the justice of God, as the cross of Christ exhibits it to the enlightened mind. It may be truly said of our Lord Jesus Christ, that his words are words of goodness and grace; his works are works of goodness and grace. He is full of compassion; hence he came into the world to save sinners. When on earth, he showed his compassion both to the bodies and souls of men, by healing the one, and making wise the other. He is of great mercy, a merciful High Priest, through whom God is merciful to sinners.

【시145:3 JFB】3. (Compare 시18:3; 48:1).
greatness—as displayed in His works.

【시145:4 JFB】4. shall declare—literally, "they shall declare," that is, all generations.

【시145:5 JFB】5. I will speak—or, "muse" (시77:12; 119:15).
thy wondrous works—or, "words of thy wonders," that is, which described them (시105:27, Margin).

【시145:6 JFB】6. terrible acts—which produce dread or fear.

【시145:7 JFB】7. memory—(시6:5), remembrance, or what causes to be remembered.
righteousness—as in 시143:1, goodness according to covenant engagement.

【시145:8 JFB】8, 9. (Compare 시103:8; 111:4).
over all, &c.—rests on all His works.

【시145:10 JFB】10. bless—as in 시145:1, to praise with reverence, more than merely to praise.

【시145:10 MHCC】All God's works show forth his praises. He satisfies the desire of every living thing, except the unreasonable children of men, who are satisfied with nothing. He does good to all the children of men; his own people in a special manner. Many children of God, who have been ready to fall into sin, to fall into despair, have tasted his goodness in preventing their falls, or recovering them speedily by his graces and comforts. And with respect to all that are heavy laden under the burden of sin, if they come to Christ by faith, he will ease them, he will raise them. He is very ready to hear and answer the prayers of his people. He is present every where; but in a special way he is nigh to them, as he is not to others. He is in their hearts, and dwells there by faith, and they dwell in him. He is nigh to those that call upon him, to help them in all times of need. He will be nigh to them, that they may have what they ask, and find what they seek, if they call upon him in truth and sincerity. And having taught men to love his name and holy ways, he will save them from the destruction of the wicked. May we then love his name, and walk in his ways, while we desire that all flesh should bless his holy name for ever and ever.

【시145:11 JFB】11, 12. The declaration of God's glory is for the extension of His knowledge and perfections in the world.

【시145:13 JFB】13. (Compare 단4:3, 34).

【시145:14 JFB】14. (Compare 시37:17; 54:4).

【시145:15 JFB】15, 16. eyes of … thee—or, look with expecting faith (시104:27, 28).

【시145:17 JFB】17. holy … works—literally, "merciful" or "kind, goodness" (시144:2) is the corresponding noun.
righteous—in a similar relation of meaning to "righteousness" (시145:7).

【시145:18 JFB】18, 19. (Compare 시34:7, 10).

【시145:20 JFB】20. Those who fear Him (시145:19) are those who are here said to love Him.
