【시136:1 JFB】시136:1-26. The theme is the same as that of Psalm 135. God should be praised for His works of creation and providence, His deliverance and care of His people, and judgments on their enemies, and His goodness to all. The chorus to every verse is in terms of that of 시106:1; 118:1-4, and was perhaps used as the Amen by the people, in worship (compare 대상16:36; 시105:45).
1-3. The divine titles denote supremacy.
【시136:1 CWC】Psalm 135.
Praises God for choosing Jacob (vv. 1-4), extols His power in the natural world (vv. 5-7), and in the deliverance of His people from Egypt (vv. 8, 9) and bringing them into the promised land (vv. 10-12). All this is in contrast to the vanity pf idols (vv. 13-18).
Psalm 136.
Is of the same character as the preceding, but is notable for the chorus attached to each verse -- a chorus with which we have become familiar in other psalms (106:1; 118:1-4), and which may have been used by the people somewhat like the "Amen."
Psalm 137.
Is plainly identified as to its period and design.
Psalm 139.
Is perhaps the most sublime declaration of the omnipresence of God found in the Holy Scriptures. In the light of that attribute the Psalmist is willing to submit himself to the closest scrutinizing (v. 23), and for the reason indicated at the close. Who will follow in his train?
We have now reached another group of David's psalms (138-140) whose structure and style are like some of the earlier ones -- complaint, prayer, hope, praise.
Psalm 142.
Is unique in the historical note attached to it. The "cave" spoken of may have been Adullam (삼상22:1), or Engedi (삼상24:3), but it is not necessary to believe that the psalm was composed while David was in the cave. It may have been written later when his experience in the cave furnished a good illustration of his present need and an argument for his relief.
Psalms 147-150.
Are thought to especially celebrate the rebuilding of Jerusalem, and correspond to the conditions in 느6:16; 12:27 and other places, although their millennial application is not far to seek.
The last psalm is a fitting close to the book, "reciting the place, theme, mode and extent of Jehovah's exalted praise."
【시136:1 MHCC】Forgetful as we are, things must be often repeated to us. By “mercy” we understand the Lord's disposition to save those whom sin has rendered miserable and vile, and all the provision he has made for the redemption of sinners by Jesus Christ. The counsels of this mercy have been from everlasting, and the effects of it will endure for ever, to all who are interested in it. The Lord continues equally ready to show mercy to all who seek for it, and this is the source of all our hope and comfort.
【시136:4 JFB】4. alone—excluding all help.
【시136:5 JFB】5, 6. by wisdom—or, "in wisdom" (시104:24).
made—literally, "maker of."
above the waters—or, "higher than the waters" (시24:2).
【시136:10 MHCC】The great things God did for Israel, when he brought them out of Egypt, were mercies which endured long to them; and our redemption by Christ, which was typified thereby, endures for ever. It is good to enter into the history of God's favours, and in each to observe, and own, that his mercy endureth for ever. He put them in possession of a good land; it was a figure of the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ.
【시136:12 JFB】12. Compare similar expressions (출3:20; 신4:34, &c.).
【시136:15 JFB】15. overthrew—literally, "shook off," as in 출14:27, as a contemptuous rejection of a reptile.
【시136:23 JFB】23. remembered us—or, "for us" (시132:1).
our low estate—that is, captivity.
【시136:23 MHCC】God's everlasting mercy is here praised for the redemption of his church; in all his glories, and all his gifts. Blessed be God, who has provided and made known to us salvation through his Son. May we know and feel his redeeming power, that we may serve him in righteousness all our days. May He who giveth food to all flesh, feed our souls unto eternal life, and enliven our affections by his grace, that we may give thanks and praise to his holy name, for his mercy endureth for ever. Let us trace up all the favours we receive to this true source, and offer praise continually.
【시136:24 JFB】24. And hath redeemed us—or, literally, "snatched us"—alluding to the sudden deliverance effected by the overthrow of Babylon.
【시136:25 JFB】25. To the special favors to His people is added the record of God's goodness to all His creatures (compare 마6:30).
