  A Song of degrees of David . If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, now may Israel say ;

If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, when men rose up against us:

Then they had swallowed us up quick , when their wrath was kindled against us:

Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul :

Then the proud waters had gone over our soul .

Blessed be the Lord , who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth .

Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers : the snare is broken , and we are escaped .

Our help is in the name of the Lord , who made heaven and earth .

【시124:1 JFB】시124:1-8. The writer, for the Church, praises God for past, and expresses trust for future, deliverance from foes.
1, 2. on our side—for us (시56:9).
now—or, "oh! let Israel"

【시124:1 CWC】This group is differentiated by the title attached to each, "A Song of Degrees," or "A Song of Ascents." The title seems derived from the going up of the people to Jerusalem at the great festivals which came three times a year. (Compare 신16:16; 왕상12:27, 28, etc.); the thought being that they chanted the psalms at different stages in their journey.
The pertinency of this application of these psalms is more apparent in some than others. For example. Psalm 121 represents the pilgrim looking towards the goal of his journey, and inspired by its contemplation to apply the thought of the strength of its hills to the care of God for His people, and especially His care for them on their journey, by night or day (vv. 3-6). The spiritual application is easily suggestive. Psalms 124, 126, 129 and 130, suggest the Babylonian captivity. Psalm 134 represents the companies arriving at the sanctuary and calling on the priests to unite in praising God on their behalf, to which the priests reply in the language of the Mosaic blessing which they only could pronounce (v. 3).
Of the whole group Psalm 132 is the most important in some respects. May Solomon have been its author? It opens with a declaration of his father David's zeal for the building of the temple (vv. 1-7). "Ephratah" (v. 6) is another name for Bethlehem (창48:7). "The fields of the wood" stands for "Jair" or "Kirjath-jearim" whence the ark was brought up by David to Jerusalem. The psalm next pleads with God for fulfillment of His promises to David concerning the temple (vv. 8-18). The Solomonic application is clear in verses 10-12, and yet, it has a typical reference to the Kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ.

【시124:1 MHCC】God suffers the enemies of his people sometimes to prevail very far against them, that his power may be seen the more in their deliverance. Happy the people whose God is Jehovah, a God all-sufficient. Besides applying this to any particular deliverance wrought in our days and the ancient times, we should have in our thoughts the great work of redemption by Jesus Christ, by which believers were rescued from Satan.

【시124:2 JFB】2. rose … against, &c.—(시3:1; 56:11).

【시124:3 JFB】3. Then—that is, the time of our danger.
quick—literally, "living" (민16:32, 33), description of ferocity.

【시124:4 JFB】4, 5. (Compare 시18:4, 16).

【시124:5 JFB】5. The epithet proud added to waters denotes insolent enemies.

【시124:6 JFB】6, 7. The figure is changed to that of a rapacious wild beast (시3:7), and then of a fowler (시91:3), and complete escape is denoted by breaking the net.

【시124:6 MHCC】God is the Author of all our deliverances, and he must have the glory. The enemies lay snares for God's people, to bring them into sin and trouble, and to hold them there. Sometimes they seem to prevail; but in the Lord let us put our trust, and we shall not be put to confusion. The believer will ascribe all the honour of his salvation, to the power, mercy, and truth of God, and look back with wonder and thanksgiving on the way in which the Lord has led him. Let us rejoice that our help for the time to come is in him who made heaven and earth.
