【시105:1 JFB】시105:1-45. After an exhortation to praise God, addressed especially to the chosen people, the writer presents the special reason for praise, in a summary of their history from the calling of Abraham to their settlement in Canaan, and reminds them that their obedience was the end of all God's gracious dealings.
1. call … name—(시79:6; 롬10:13). Call on Him, according to His historically manifested glory. After the example of Abraham, who, as often as God acquired for Himself a name in guiding him, called in solemn worship upon the name of the Lord (창12:8; 13:4).
among the people—or, "peoples" (시18:49).
deeds—or, "wonders" (시103:7).
【시105:1 CWC】The first Psalm in this lesson suggests Psalm 74 on which we did not dwell, but both of which depict the desolations of Judah by the Babylonians (cf. 렘52:12-24), On this supposition their date would be that of the captivity, and their author a later Asaph than the Asaph mentioned in David's time.
Psalm 80.
Has captivity features also, and some would say it relates to the ten tribes, as the preceding Psalm does to Judah, The next several Psalms are much alike in this respect and may easily be interpreted from that point of view.
Psalm 86.
Attributed to David, constitutes a break in the series, and is a prayer which we pause to analyze. Observe the touching picture in verse 1, a child with his arms round his father's neck. Observe the five requests for: preservation, joy, instruction, strength and encouragement, in verses 2, 4, 11, 16 and 17 respectively. Observe the grounds from the human side on which an answer is expected, his need, importunity (margin), trust, relationship to God (margin), verses 1, 3, 4 and 2. From the divine side he expected it because of God's goodness, greatness and grace, verses, 5, 10, 13.
Of the authors of Psalms 88 and 89 we know nothing save that their names are among David's singers (대상6:18,33; 15:17). There is little to show the occasion when they were written, but the last-named has been assigned to Absalom's rebellion. From that point of view it may be a contrast between the promised prosperity of David's throne (2 Sam. 7), and what now threatens its downfall; but in any event it is full of helpfulness in spiritual application.
Psalms 90 and 91 (especially the latter).
Rank with 37, 51 and 103 in popular favor, being quoted almost as frequently. The first is a contrast between man's frailty and God's eternity, and the second, an outburst, of confidence in the presence of physical peril. Many a foreign missionary has found this last "a very present help in time of trouble"! The two Psalms are also capable of a dispensational application, the first referring to Israel's day of sorrow and repentance, and the second to her deliverance and protection from the tribulation to come. Satan's use of 91:11, 12, in the temptation of our Lord, will not be forgotten (마4:6).
Psalms 93-100.
Were applied by the Jews to the times of the Messiah, who had in mind His first advent only; but we in the light of subsequent events see their application to His second advent. In Psalm 93 He is entering on His reign; in 94 He is appealed to for judgment on the evil-doers; in 95 Israel is exhorted to praise Him, and warned against unbelief. The substance of the next four is found in 1 Chronicles 16, which was used by David's direction at the dedication of the tabernacle on Mt. Zion, which typified the dispensation of the Messiah.
A break appears at Psalm 101, where David is once more named, and is making a vow of consecration corresponding to Psalm 15. In Psalm 102 he is pouring out a deep complaint, prophetic of Israel's hour of tribulation and her deliverance therefrom (vv. 13-22). Observe that when the kingdoms of the earth are serving the Lord, men will be declaring His name in Zion and praising Him in Jerusalem. As we have seen earlier, that sacred city will be the centre of things in the millennial age.
Psalms 103-108.
Are all of praise. In the first, David rises from a thankful acknowledgment of personal blessings (vv. 1-5) to a celebration of God's attributes. In the next God is praised for His works of creation and providence. In the next Israel's special reasons for praise are enumerated, the thought being carried forward into the two succeeding Psalms, although the second of the two broadens out again into a celebration of God's mercy to all men in their various emergencies. It is one of the most beautiful of the Psalms and its structure affords another good opportunity to illustrate Hebrew poetry.
【시105:1 MHCC】Our devotion is here stirred up, that we may stir up ourselves to praise God. Seek his strength; that is, his grace; the strength of his Spirit to work in us that which is good, which we cannot do but by strength derived from him, for which he will be sought. Seek to have his favour to eternity, therefore continue seeking it while living in this world; for he will not only be found, but he will reward those that diligently seek him.
【시105:3 JFB】3, 4. Seeking God's favor is the only true mode of getting true happiness, and His strength [시105:4] is the only true source of protection (compare 시32:11; 40:16).
Glory … name—boast in His perfections. The world glories in its horses and chariots against the Church of God lying in the dust; but our hope is in the name, that is, the power and love of God to His people, manifested in past deliverances.
【시105:5 JFB】5, 6. judgments … mouth—His judicial decisions for the good and against the wicked.
【시105:6 JFB】6. chosen—rather qualifies "children" than "Jacob," as a plural.
【시105:7 JFB】7. Rather, "He, Jehovah, is our God." His title, "Jehovah," implies that He, the unchangeable, self-existing Being, makes things to be, that is, fulfils His promises, and therefore will not forsake His people. Though specially of His people, He is God over all.
【시105:8 JFB】8-11. The covenant was often ratified.
word—answering to "covenant" [시105:9] in the parallel clause, namely, the word of promise, which, according to 시105:10, He set forth for an inviolable law.
commanded—or, "ordained" (시68:28).
to a thousand generations—perpetually. A verbal allusion to 신7:9 (compare 출20:6).
【시105:8 MHCC】Let us remember the Redeemer's marvellous works, his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth. Though true Christians are few number, strangers and pilgrims upon earth, yet a far better inheritance than Canaan is made sure to them by the covenant of God; and if we have the anointing of the Holy Spirit, none can do us any harm. Afflictions are among our mercies. They prove our faith and love, they humble our pride, they wean us from the world, and quicken our prayers. Bread is the staff which supports life; when that staff is broken, the body fails and sinks to the earth. The word of God is the staff of spiritual life, the food and support of the soul: the sorest judgment is a famine of hearing the word of the Lord. Such a famine was sore in all lands when Christ appeared in the flesh; whose coming, and the blessed effect of it, are shadowed forth in the history of Joseph. At the appointed time Christ was exalted as Mediator; all the treasures of grace and salvation are at his disposal, perishing sinners come to him, and are relieved by him.
【시105:9 JFB】9. Which covenant—or, "Word" (시105:8).
【시105:10 JFB】10, 11. Alluding to God's promise to Jacob (창28:13). Out of the whole storehouse of the promises of God, only one is prominently brought forward, namely, that concerning the possession of Canaan [시105:11]. Everything revolves around this. The wonders and judgments have all for their ultimate design the fulfilment of this promise.
【시105:12 JFB】12-15. few … in number—alluding to Jacob's words (창34:30), "I being few in number."
yea, very few—literally, "as a few," that is, like fewness itself (compare 사1:9).
strangers—sojourners in the land of their future inheritance, as in a strange country (히11:9).
【시105:13 JFB】13. from one nation to another—and so from danger to danger; now in Egypt, now in the wilderness, and lastly in Canaan. Though a few strangers, wandering among various nations, God protected them.
【시105:14 JFB】14. reproved kings—Pharaoh of Egypt and Abimelech of Gerar (창12:17; 20:3).
【시105:15 JFB】15. Touch not—referring to 창26:11, where Abimelech says of Isaac, "He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death."
mine anointed—as specially consecrated to Me (시2:2). The patriarch was the prophet, priest, and king of his family.
my prophets—in a similar sense, compare 창20:7. The "anointed" are those vessels of God, consecrated to His service, "in whom (as Pharaoh said of Joseph, 창41:38) the Spirit of God is" [Hengstenberg].
【시105:16 JFB】16. God ordered the famine. God
called for a famine—as if it were a servant, ready to come at God's bidding. Compare the centurion's words, as to disease being God's servant (마8:8, 9).
upon the land—namely, Canaan (창41:54).
staff of bread—what supports life (레26:26; 시104:15; 사3:1).
【시105:17 JFB】17-21. Joseph was sent of God (창45:5).
【시105:18 JFB】18. hurt with fetters—(창40:3).
was laid in iron—literally, "his soul" (see on 시16:10), or, "he came into iron," or, he was bound to his grief (compare 시3:2; 11:1). The "soul" is put for the whole person, because the soul of the captive suffers still more than the body. Joseph is referred to as being an appropriate type of those "bound in affliction and iron" (시107:10).
【시105:19 JFB】19. his word came—His prophecy (창41:11-20) to the officers came to pass, or was fulfilled (유13:12, 17; 삼상9:6, explain the form of speech).
the word of the Lord—or, "saying," or "decree of the Lord."
tried him—or, "proved him," by the afflictions it appointed him to endure before his elevation (compare 창41:40-43).
【시105:22 JFB】22. To bind—Not literally bind; but exercise over them absolute control, as the parallel in the second clause shows; also 창41:40, 44, in which not literal fettering, but commanding obedience, is spoken of. It refers to 시105:18. The soul that was once bound itself now binds others, even princes. The same moral binding is assigned to the saints (시149:8).
teach … senators wisdom—the ground of his exaltation by Pharaoh was his wisdom (창41:39); namely, in state policy, and ordering well a kingdom.
【시105:23 JFB】23-25. Israel … and Jacob—that is, Jacob himself is meant, as 시105:24 speaks of "his people." Still, he came with his whole house (창46:6, 7).
sojourned—(창47:4).
land of Ham—or, Egypt (시78:51).
【시105:24 MHCC】As the believer commonly thrives best in his soul when under the cross; so the church also flourishes most in true holiness, and increases in number, while under persecution. Yet instruments shall be raised up for their deliverance, and plagues may be expected by persecutors. And see the special care God took of his people in the wilderness. All the benefits bestowed on Israel as a nation, were shadows of spiritual blessings with which we are blessed in Christ Jesus. Having redeemed us with his blood, restored our souls to holiness, and set us at liberty from Satan's bondage, he guides and guards us all the way. He satisfies our souls with the bread of heaven, and the water of life from the Rock of salvation, and will bring us safely to heaven. He redeems his servants from all iniquity, and purifies them unto himself, to be a peculiar people, zealous of good works.
【시105:25 JFB】25. turned their heart—God controls men's free acts (compare 삼상10:9). "When Saul had turned his back to go from (God's prophet) Samuel, God turned (Margin) him another heart" (see 출1:8, &c.). Whatever evil the wicked man plots against God's people, God holds bound even his heart, so as not to lay a single plan except what God permits. Thus Isaiah (사43:17) says it was God who brought forth the army of Pharaoh to pursue Israel to their own destruction (출4:21; 7:3).
【시105:26 JFB】26. Moses … chosen—both what they were by divine choice (시78:70).
【시105:27 JFB】27. signs—literally, "words of signs," or rather, as "words" in Hebrew means "things," "things of His signs," that is, His marvellous tokens of power (시145:5, Margin). Compare the same Hebraism (시65:3, Margin).
【시105:28 JFB】28-36. The ninth plague is made prominent as peculiarly wonderful.
they rebelled not—Moses and Aaron promptly obeyed God (히11:27); (compare 출7:1-11:10 and 시78:44-51, with which this summary substantially agrees). Or, rather, the "darkness" here is figurative (렘13:16), the literal plague of darkness (출10:22, 23) being only alluded to as the symbol of God's wrath which overhung Egypt as a dark cloud during all the plagues. Hence, it is placed first, out of the historical order. Thus, "They rebelled not (that is, no longer) against His word," refers to the Egyptians. Whenever God sent a plague on them, they were ready to let Israel go, though refusing when the plague ceased.
his word—His command to let Israel go [Hengstenberg]. Of the ten plagues, only eight are mentioned, the fifth, the murrain of beasts, and the sixth, the boils, being omitted.
【시105:29 JFB】29-31. He deprived them of their favorite "fish," and gave them instead, [시105:30] out of the water, loathsome "frogs," and (시105:31) upon their land tormenting "flies" (the dog-fly, according to Maurer) and "lice" (gnats, according to Hengstenberg).
【시105:32 JFB】32. gave them—referring to 레26:4, "I give you rain in due season." His "gift" to Israel's foes is one of a very different kind from that bestowed on His people.
hail for rain—instead of fertilizing showers, hail destructive to trees. This forms the transition to the vegetable kingdom. The locusts in 시105:34 similarly are destructive to plants.
【시105:33 JFB】33. their coasts—all their land (시78:54).
【시105:34 JFB】34. caterpillars—literally, "the lickers up," devouring insects; probably the hairy-winged locust.
【시105:36 JFB】36. the chief—literally, "the firstlings." The ascending climax passes from the food of man to man himself. The language here is quoted from 시78:51.
【시105:37 JFB】37. with silver and gold—presented them by the Egyptians, as an acknowledgment due for their labors in their bondage (compare 출12:35).
one feeble person—or, "stumbler," unfit for the line of march. Compare "harnessed," that is, accoutred and marshalled as an army on march (출13:18; 사5:27).
【시105:38 JFB】38. (Compare 출12:33; 신11:25).
【시105:39 JFB】39. covering—in sense of protection (compare 출13:21; 민10:34). In the burning sands of the desert the cloud protected the congregation from the heat of the sun; an emblem of God's protecting favor of His people, as interpreted by Isaiah (사4:5, 6; compare 민9:16).
【시105:42 JFB】42-45. The reasons for these dealings: (1) God's faithfulness to His covenant, "His holy promise" of Canaan, is the fountain whence flowed so many acts of marvellous kindness to His people (compare 시105:8, 11). 출2:24 is the fundamental passage [Hengstenberg]. (2) That they might be obedient. The observance of God's commands by Abraham was the object of the covenant with him (창18:19), as it was also the object of the covenant with Israel, that they might observe God's statutes.
remembered … and Abraham—or, "remembered His holy word (that is, covenant confirmed) with Abraham."
【시105:44 JFB】44. inherited the labour—that is, the fruits of their labor; their corn and vineyards (수21:43-45).
