1. 만군의 여호와의 말씀이 임하여 이르시되
Again the word of the Lord of hosts came to me, saying ,
2. 만군의 여호와가 말하노라 내가 시온을 위하여 크게 질투하며 그를 위하여 크게 분노함으로 질투하노라
Thus saith the Lord of hosts ; I was jealous for Zion with great jealousy , and I was jealous for her with great fury .
3. 나 여호와가 말하노라 내가 시온에 돌아왔은즉 예루살렘 가운데 거하리니 예루살렘은 진리의 성읍이라 일컫겠고 만군의 여호와의 산은 성산이라 일컫게 되리라
Thus saith the Lord ; I am returned unto Zion , and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem : and Jerusalem shall be called a city of truth ; and the mountain of the Lord of hosts the holy mountain .

4. 만군의 여호와가 말하노라 예루살렘 길거리에 늙은 지아비와 늙은 지어미가 다시 앉을 것이라 다 나이 많으므로 각기 손에 지팡이를 잡을 것이요
Thus saith the Lord of hosts ; There shall yet old men and old women dwell in the streets of Jerusalem , and every man with his staff in his hand for very age .
5. 그 성읍 거리에 동남과 동녀가 가득하여 거기서 장난하리라
And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in the streets thereof.
6. 만군의 여호와가 말하노라 이 일이 그 날에 남은 백성의 눈에는 기이하려니와 내 눈에 어찌 기이하겠느냐 만군의 여호와의 말이니라
Thus saith the Lord of hosts ; If it be marvellous in the eyes of the remnant of this people in these days , should it also be marvellous in mine eyes ? saith the Lord of hosts .
7. 만군의 여호와가 말하노라 내가 내 백성을 동방에서부터, 서방에서부터 구원하여 내고
Thus saith the Lord of hosts ; Behold, I will save my people from the east country , and from the west country ;
8. 인도하여다가 예루살렘 가운데 거하게 하리니 그들은 내 백성이 되고 나는 성실과 정의로 그들의 하나님이 되리라
And I will bring them, and they shall dwell in the midst of Jerusalem : and they shall be my people , and I will be their God , in truth and in righteousness .
9. 만군의 여호와가 말하노라 만군의 여호와의 집 곧 전을 건축하려고 그 지대를 쌓던 날에 일어난 선지자들의 입의 말을 이 때에 듣는 너희는 손을 견고히 할지어다
Thus saith the Lord of hosts ; Let your hands be strong , ye that hear in these days these words by the mouth of the prophets , which were in the day that the foundation of the house of the Lord of hosts was laid , that the temple might be built .
10. 그 날 전에는 사람도 삯을 얻지 못하였고 짐승도 삯을 받지 못하였으며 사람이 대적을 인하여 출입에 평안치 못하였었나니 이는 내가 뭇 사람으로 서로 치게 하였음이어니와
For before these days there was no hire for man , nor any hire for beast ; neither was there any peace to him that went out or came in because of the affliction : for I set all men every one against his neighbour .
11. 만군의 여호와가 말하노니 이제는 내가 이 남은 백성을 대하기를 전일과 같이 아니할 것인즉
But now I will not be unto the residue of this people as in the former days , saith the Lord of hosts .
12. 곧 평안한 추수를 얻을 것이라 포도나무가 열매를 맺으며 땅이 산물을 내며 하늘은 이슬을 내리리니 내가 이 남은 백성으로 이 모든 것을 누리게 하리라
For the seed shall be prosperous ; the vine shall give her fruit , and the ground shall give her increase , and the heavens shall give their dew ; and I will cause the remnant of this people to possess all these things.
13. 유다 족속아 이스라엘 족속아 너희가 이방 가운데서 저주가 되었었으나 이제는 내가 너희를 구원하여 너희로 축복이 되게 하리니 두려워 말지니라 손을 견고히 할지니라
And it shall come to pass, that as ye were a curse among the heathen , O house of Judah , and house of Israel ; so will I save you, and ye shall be a blessing : fear not, but let your hands be strong .
14. 만군의 여호와가 말하노라 전에 너희 열조가 나의 노를 격발할 때에 내가 그들에게 재앙을 내리기로 뜻하고 뉘우치지 아니하였었으나
For thus saith the Lord of hosts ; As I thought to punish you, when your fathers provoked me to wrath , saith the Lord of hosts , and I repented not:
15. 이제 내가 예루살렘과 유다 족속에게 은혜를 베풀기로 뜻하였나니 너희는 두려워 말지니라
So again have I thought in these days to do well unto Jerusalem and to the house of Judah : fear ye not.
16. 너희가 행할 일은 이러하니라 너희는 각기 이웃으로 더불어 진실을 말하며 너희 성문에서 진실하고 화평한 재판을 베풀고
These are the things that ye shall do ; Speak ye every man the truth to his neighbour ; execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates :
17. 심중에 서로 해하기를 도모하지 말며 거짓 맹세를 좋아하지 말라 이 모든 일은 나의 미워하는 것임이니라 나 여호와의 말이니라
And let none of you imagine evil in your hearts against his neighbour ; and love no false oath : for all these are things that I hate , saith the Lord .
18. 만군의 여호와의 말씀이 내게 임하여 이르시되
And the word of the Lord of hosts came unto me, saying ,
19. 만군의 여호와가 말하노라 사월의 금식과 오월의 금식과 칠월의 금식이 변하여 유다 족속에게 기쁨과 즐거움과 희락의 절기가 되리니 오직 너희는 진실과 화평을 사랑할지니라
Thus saith the Lord of hosts ; The fast of the fourth month, and the fast of the fifth , and the fast of the seventh , and the fast of the tenth , shall be to the house of Judah joy and gladness , and cheerful feasts ; therefore love the truth and peace .
20. 만군의 여호와가 말하노라 그 후에 여러 백성과 많은 성읍의 거민이 올 것이라
Thus saith the Lord of hosts ; It shall yet come to pass, that there shall come people , and the inhabitants of many cities :
21. 이 성읍 거민이 저 성읍에 가서 이르기를 우리가 속히 가서 만군의 여호와를 찾고 여호와께 은혜를 구하자 할 것이면 나도 가겠노라 하겠으며
And the inhabitants of one city shall go to another , saying , Let us go speedily to pray before the Lord , and to seek the Lord of hosts : I will go also.
22. 많은 백성과 강대한 나라들이 예루살렘으로 와서 만군의 여호와를 찾고 여호와께 은혜를 구하리라
Yea, many people and strong nations shall come to seek the Lord of hosts in Jerusalem , and to pray before the Lord .
23. 만군의 여호와가 말하노라 그 날에는 방언이 다른 열국 백성 열 명이 유다 사람 하나의 옷자락을 잡을 것이라 곧 잡고 말하기를 하나님이 너희와 함께 하심을 들었나니 우리가 너희와 함께 가려 하노라 하리라 하시니라
Thus saith the Lord of hosts ; In those days it shall come to pass, that ten men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations , even shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew , saying , We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you.

【슥8:1 JFB】Z전8:1-23. Continuation of the Subject in the Seventh Chapter.After urging them to obedience by the fate of their fathers, he urges them to it by promises of coming prosperity.
【슥8:1 CWC】[THE PROPHET'S OWN TIME]
Zechariah, like Haggai, had a two-fold mission, to strengthen the hands of Israel for the rebuilding of the temple, and to quicken their hope as the earlier prophets had done, by painting in glowing colors the coming time of triumph over every foe.
This mission is set before us in a two-fold division of the book. Chapters 1-8 give us a series of prophetic visions bearing primarily, upon the prophet's own time, while chapters 9-14 deal chiefly with the events culminating at the end of the age and the opening of the millennium.
Part one, after the introduction, chapter 1:7-6:8; might be outlined thus:
1. The prophetic visions, 1-6.
The man among the myrtle trees.
The four horns.
The four smiths.
The measuring line.
The high priest in the temple.
The golden candlestick.
The flying roll.
The woman in the ephah.
The four chariots.
2. The symbolic crowning of the high priest, 6:8-15.
3. The instruction about fasting, 7-8.
The First Four Visions, 1-2.
To understand the first vision is the key to the rest. When was it received by the prophet? Chapter 1:7. Describe what he saw (8). Observe that two persons are referred to, the man upon the red horse, and the angel that talked with Zechariah, sometimes called "interpreting angel." The man on the horse seems afterward identified with "the angel of the Lord," verses 11, 12, one of the Old Testament names for Christ. It is presumable that the other horses had angelic riders also. Who are these described to be (10)? What report gave they of the earth (11)? Prosperity and peace seem to have been characteristic, of all the peoples, while Jerusalem was distressed, the temple unfinished, and the remnant of the Jews there persecuted by enemies. Who now intercedes on behalf of Jerusalem and Judah (12)? Is the answer of Jehovah encouraging or the opposite (13)? What was His answer in detail (14-17)? Was the peace and prosperity of the Gentile nations an evidence of the divine blessing upon them (15)? Jehovah had used them to discipline His people, but what shows their selfish and wicked intent in the premises ("same verse)? What does Jehovah promise shall be accomplished by the little remnant at this time (16)? What of the future (17)? This was fulfilled in the history of God's people at the time, in a measure at least. The temple was built, the cities restored, and Jerusalem and Judah comforted. And yet there is to be grander fulfillment in the days to come.
The two following visions, if we call them two -- the four horns and four smiths (Revised Version), are closely connected with the one just considered. The four horns are the four world-powers (Babylonian, Persian, Greek and Roman) who scatter Israel, but the four smiths are four corresponding powers of some sort, not necessarily nations, which shall overcome them at the last and bring deliverance. We are almost necessarily shut up to the conclusion that this prophecy extends to the latter days by its reference to the whole of the four powers.
The next vision, that of the measuring line, presents no serious difficulty. Its significance explained (chapter 2:4, 5), is the same practically as that of the man among the myrtles. However it may have had an approximate fulfillment in the prophet's own time, verses 10-13 indicate that it looks toward the future, what declaration in those verses seem to prove that?
The High Priest and Satan, 3.
To understand the meaning of the vision now reached, keep in mind that a cause of dejection of the Jews was their consciousness of past sin. They felt that God had forsaken them, and that their present calamities were the result. We see herein, a parallel to the spiritual condition of a true believer in our own day, whom Satan torments with the belief that he cannot be saved on account of his many sins. This is now set before us in symbol, only there is a nation in the case here, and not an individual, for Joshua the high priest represented Israel.
Where is the high priest seen to be (3:1)? It is thought that he was represented as in the holy place ministering at the altar. Who is seen with him, and for what malign purpose? We have here in symbol, Satan's temptation of the saint to doubt God's power to forgive and save. How is this goodness and power shown, in the next verse? On what ground is Jerusalem to be saved, on that of merit or of the divine choice? What does verse 3 teach as to the truth of Satan's insinuation against Israel as represented by the high priest? Does the imagery indicate the holiness or sinfulness of the people. Yet how is divine grace illustrated in the next command of Jehovah (4)? What did the removal of his filthy garments signify? What did the changed raiment signify? Compare 롬3:22. What next was done (5)? By this act the clothing of the high priest was completed and he was fitted for his official service. Who is represented as "standing by" all this time as if interceding for Joshua (and through him for the nation), and to see that these commands were carried out and these benefits conferred? With whom have we identified "the Angel of the Lord"? What charge is now laid upon Joshua, and what privilege is connected with it (7)?
【슥8:1 MHCC】The sins of Zion were her worst enemies. God will take away her sins, and then no other enemies shall hurt her. Those who profess religion must adorn their profession by godliness and honesty. When become a city of truth and a mountain of holiness, Jerusalem is peaceable and prosperous. Verses #(4, 5), beautifully describe a state of great outward peace, attended with plenty, temperance, and contentment. The scattered Israelites shall be brought together from all parts. God will never leave nor forsake them in a way of mercy, for this he has promised them; and they shall never leave nor forsake him in a way of duty, as they have promised him. These promises were partly fulfilled in the Jewish church, betwixt the captivity and the time of Christ's coming; and they had fuller accomplishment in the gospel church; but the full import must be as to the future times of the Christian church, or the future restoration of the Jews. With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible; so far are God's thoughts and ways above ours. In the present low state of vital godliness, we can hardly conceive that so complete a change can be made; but a change thus extensive and glorious, can be brought to pass by the almighty power of the new-creating Spirit, in less time than he was pleased to employ in creating the world. Let the hands of all who labour in the cause of the gospel be strong, serving the Lord in true holiness, assured that their labour shall not be in vain.

Jerusalem … city of truth—that is, faithful to her God, who is the God of truth (사1:21, 26; 요17:17). Never yet fully fulfilled, therefore still to be so.
the mountain of the Lord—(사2:2, 3).
holy mountain—(렘31:23).
【슥8:4 JFB】4. So tranquil and prosperous shall the nation be that wars shall no longer prematurely cut off the people: men and women shall reach advanced ages. The promise of long life was esteemed one of the greatest blessings in the Jewish theocracy with its temporal rewards of obedience (출20:12; 신4:40). Hence this is a leading feature in millennial blessedness (사65:20, 22).
for very age—literally, "for multitude of days."
【슥8:5 JFB】5. boys and girls playing—implying security and a numerous progeny, accounted a leading blessing among the Jews. Contrast 렘6:11; 9:21.
【슥8:6 JFB】6. However impossible these things just promised by Me seem to you, they are not so with God. The "remnant" that had returned from the captivity, beholding the city desolate and the walls and houses in ruins, could hardly believe what God promised. The expression "remnant" glances at their ingratitude in rating so low God's power, though they had experienced it so "marvellously" displayed in their restoration. A great source of unbelief is, men "limit" God's power by their own (시78:19, 20, 41).
these days—"of small things" (Z전4:10), when such great things promised seemed incredible. Maurer, after Jerome, translates, "in those days"; that is, if the thing which I promised to do in those days, seems "marvellous," &c.
【슥8:7 JFB】7. save my people from … east … west—that is, from every region (compare 시50:1; the "West" is literally, "the going down of the sun") to which they are scattered; they are now found especially in countries west of Jerusalem. The dispersion under Nebuchadnezzar was only to the east, namely, to Babylonia. The restoration, including a spiritual return to God (Z전8:8), here foretold, must therefore be still future (사11:11, 12; 43:5, 6; 겔37:21; 암9:14, 15; also Z전13:9; 렘30:22; 31:1, 33).
【슥8:8 JFB】8. in truth—in good faith, both on their side and Mine: God being faithful to His everlasting covenant and enabling them by His Spirit to be faithful to Him.
【슥8:9 JFB】9-13. All adversities formerly attended them when neglecting to build the temple: but now God promises all blessings, as an encouragement to energy in the work.
hands … strong—be of courageous mind (삼하16:21), not merely in building, but in general, as having such bright prospects (Z전8:13, &c.).
these days—the time that had elapsed between the prophet's having spoken "these words" and the time (Z전8:10; compare 학2:15-19) when they set about in earnest restoring the temple.
the prophets—Haggai and Zechariah himself (스5:1, 2). The same prophets who promised prosperity at the foundation of the temple, now promised still greater blessings hereafter.
【슥8:9 MHCC】Those only who lay their hands to the plough of duty, shall have them strengthened with the promises of mercy: those who avoid their fathers' faults have the curse turned into a blessing. Those who believed the promises, were to show their faith by their works, and to wait the fulfilment. When God is displeased, he can cause trade to decay, and set every man against his neighbour; but when he returns in mercy, all is happy and prosperous. Surely believers in Christ must not trifle with the exhortation to put away lying, and to speak every man peace with his neighbour, to hate what the Lord hates, and to love that wherein he delights.
【슥8:10 JFB】10. before these days—before the time in which ye again proceeded with the building of the temple (Z전8:9), namely, at the time that the temple lay neglected.
no hire for man … beast—that is, no produce of the field to repay the labor of man and beast on it (학1:6, 9, 10; 2:16).
neither … peace to him that went out or came in—(대하15:5). No one could in safety do his business at home or abroad, in the city or in the country, whether going or returning.
because of the affliction—so sorely pressed were they by the foe outside. Maurer translates, "Because of the foe" (스4:1).
every one against … neighbour—There was internal discord, as well as foes from without.
【슥8:11 JFB】11. "But now that the temple has been built, I will not do as I had formerly done to those who returned from Babylon" [Jerome]. Henceforth I will bless you.
【슥8:12 JFB】12. seed … prosperous—that is, shall not fair to yield abundantly (호2:21, 22; 학2:19). Contrast with this verse 학1:6, 9-11; 2:16.
dew—especially beneficial in hot countries where rain is rare.
【슥8:13 JFB】13. a curse—As the heathen have made you another name for "a curse," wishing to their foes as bad a lot as yours (렘24:9; 29:18); so your name shall be a formula of blessing, so that men shall say to their friend, May thy lot be as happy as that of Judah (창48:20). Including also the idea of the Jews being a source of blessing to the Gentile nations (미5:7; 습3:20). The distinct mention of "Judah" and "Israel" proves that the prophecy has not yet had its full accomplishment, as Israel (the ten tribes) has never yet been restored, though individuals of Israel returned with Judah.
【슥8:14 JFB】14. I thought—I determined.
you—that is, your fathers, with whom ye are one; the Jewish Church of all ages being regarded as an organic whole (compare 학2:5; 마23:31, 32).
repented not—I changed not My purpose, because they changed not their mind (대하36:16). With the froward God shows Himself froward (시18:26). If the threatened punishment has been so unchangeably inflicted, much more will God surely give the promised blessing, which is so much more consonant to His nature (렘31:28).
【슥8:16 JFB】16, 17. The promised blessings are connected with obedience. God's covenanted grace will lead those truly blessed by it to holiness, not licentiousness.
truth to … neighbour—not that the truth should not be spoken to foreigners too; but He makes it an aggravation of their sin, that they spared not even their brethren. Besides, and above all outward ordinances (Z전7:3), God requires truth and justice.
judgment of … peace—Equitable decisions tend to allay feuds and produce peace.
gates—the place where courts of judicature in the East were held.
【슥8:17 JFB】17. all these … I hate—therefore ye too ought to hate them. Religion consists in conformity to God's nature, that we should love what God loves and hate what God hates.
【슥8:18 JFB】18, 19. The prophet answers the query (Z전7:3) as to the fast in the fifth month, by a reply applying to all their fasts: these are to be turned into days of rejoicing. So Jesus replied to His disciples when similarly consulting Him as to why fasting was not imposed by Him, as it was by John the Baptist. When the Sun of righteousness shines, tears are dried up (마9:15). So hereafter (사35:10).
【슥8:18 MHCC】When God comes towards us in ways of mercy, we must meet him with joy and thankfulness. Therefore be faithful and honest in all your dealings; and let it be a pleasure to you to be so, though thereby you come short of the gains others get dishonestly; and, as much as in you lies, live peaceably with all men. Let the truths of God rule in your heads, and let the peace of God rule in your hearts. Thus the ancient servants of God drew the notice of heathen neighbours, whose prejudices were softened. A great increase to the church shall be made. Hitherto the Jews had been prone to learn the idolatries of other nations: what more unlikely than that they should teach religion to their conquerors, and to all the principal nations of the earth! Yet this is expressly foretold, and it came to pass. Hitherto the prophecy has been wonderfully fulfilled, and no doubt future events will explain it further. It is good to be with those who have God with them; if we take God for our God, we must take his people for our people, and be willing to take our lot with them. But let not any one think that mere zeal, either for Jews or Gentiles, will stand in the place of personal religion. Let us be living epistles of Christ, known and read of all men, so that others may wish to go with us, and to have their portion with us in the realms of bliss.
【슥8:19 JFB】19. fast of … fourth month—On the fourth month of the eleventh year of Zedekiah's reign, on the ninth day, Jerusalem was taken (렘39:2; 52:6, 7). It was therefore made a fast day.
fifth … seventh—(See on Z전7:3; Z전7:5).
tenth—On the tenth month and tenth day, in the ninth year of Zedekiah, the siege began (렘52:4).
therefore love the truth—or, "only love." English Version is better. God's blessing covenanted to Israel is not made to depend on Israel's goodness: but Israel's goodness should follow as the consequence of God's gracious promises (Z전8:16, 17; Z전7:9, 10). God will bless, but not those who harden themselves in sin.

Thus saith the Lord of hosts—a preface needed to assure the Jews, now disheartened by the perils surrounding them, and by the humble aspect of the temple. "Unlikely as what follows may seem to you, Jehovah of hosts, boundless in resources, saith it, therefore it shall be so." Just before Christ's coming, a feeling grew up among the heathen of the unsatisfactoriness of their systems of religion and philosophy; this disposed them favorably towards the religion of the Jew, so that proselytes embraced the worship of Jehovah from various parts of Asia; these again were predisposed to embrace Christianity when it was preached to them (행2:9-12, 41). But the full accomplishment of the conversion of the Gentiles foretold here is reserved till "Jerusalem" (Z전8:22) becomes the center of Christianized Jewry (롬11:12, 15).
【슥8:21 JFB】21. Let us … I—manifesting zeal and love: converted themselves, they seek the conversion of others (아1:4). To exhortation in general ("Let us go"), they add individual example ("I will go"). Or, the change from plural to singular implies that the general consent in religious earnestness leads each individual to decide for God.
go speedily—literally, "go, going"; implying intense earnestness.
pray—Hebrew, "entreat the face" (Z전7:2); entreat His favor and grace.
【슥8:22 JFB】22. many … strong nations … in Jerusalem—In contrast to the few and weak Jews now building the temple and city, then such shall be their influence that many and strong nations shall come to worship Jehovah their God in Jerusalem (사60:3; 66:23).
