  These are now the chief of their fathers , and this is the genealogy of them that went up with me from Babylon , in the reign of Artaxerxes the king .

  And of the last sons of Adonikam , whose names are these, Eliphelet , Jeiel , and Shemaiah , and with them threescore males .

  Of the sons also of Bigvai ; Uthai , and Zabbud , and with them seventy males .

 

15. 내가 무리를 아하와로 흐르는 강가에 모으고 거기서 삼 일 동안 장막에 유하며 백성과 제사장들을 살핀즉 그 중에 레위 자손이 하나도 없는지라

  And I gathered them together to the river that runneth to Ahava ; and there abode we in tents three days : and I viewed the people , and the priests , and found there none of the sons of Levi .

 

16. 이에 모든 족장 곧 엘리에셀과 아리엘과 스마야와 엘라단과 야립과 엘라단과 나단과 스가랴와 므술람을 부르고 또 명철한 사람 요야립과 엘라단을 불러

  Then sent I for Eliezer , for Ariel , for Shemaiah , and for Elnathan , and for Jarib , and for Elnathan , and for Nathan , and for Zechariah , and for Meshullam , chief men ; also for Joiarib , and for Elnathan , men of understanding .

 

17. 가시뱌 지방으로 보내어 그곳 족장 잇도에게 나아가게 하고 잇도와 그 형제 곧 가시뱌 지방에 거한 느디님 사람들에게 할 말을 일러주고 우리 하나님의 전을 위하여 수종들 자를 데리고 오라 하였더니

  And I sent them with commandment unto Iddo the chief at the place Casiphia , and I told them what they should say unto Iddo , and to his brethren the Nethinims , at the place Casiphia , that they should bring unto us ministers for the house of our God .

 

18. 우리 하나님의 선한 손의 도우심을 입고 저희가 이스라엘의 손자 레위의 아들 말리의 자손 중에서 한 명철한 사람을 데려오고 또 세레뱌와 그 아들들과 형제 십팔 명과

  And by the good hand of our God upon us they brought us a man of understanding , of the sons of Mahli , the son of Levi , the son of Israel ; and Sherebiah , with his sons and his brethren , eighteen ;

 

19. 하사뱌와 므라리 자손 중 여사야와 그 형제와 저의 아들들 이십 명을 데려오고

  And Hashabiah , and with him Jeshaiah of the sons of Merari , his brethren and their sons , twenty ;

 

20. 또 느디님 사람 곧 다윗과 방백들이 주어 레위 사람에게 수종들게 한 그 느디님 사람 중 이백이십 명을 데려왔으니 그 이름이 다 기록되었느니라

  Also of the Nethinims , whom David and the princes had appointed for the service of the Levites , two hundred and twenty Nethinims : all of them were expressed by name .

 

21. 때에 내가 아하와 강 가에서 금식을 선포하고 우리 하나님 앞에서 스스로 겸비하여 우리와 우리 어린 것과 모든 소유를 위하여 평탄한 길을 그에게 간구하였으니

  Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava , that we might afflict ourselves before our God , to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones , and for all our substance .

 

22. 이는 우리가 전에 왕에게 고하기를 우리 하나님의 손은 자기를 찾는 모든 자에게 선을 베푸시고 자기를 배반하는 모든 자에게는 권능과 진노를 베푸신다 하였으므로 길에서 적군을 막고 우리를 도울 보병과 마병을 왕에게 구하기를 부끄러워 하였음이라

  For I was ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way : because we had spoken unto the king , saying , The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him; but his power and his wrath is against all them that forsake him.

 

23. 그러므로 우리가 이를 위하여 금식하며 우리 하나님께 간구하였더니 그 응낙하심을 입었느니라

  So we fasted and besought our God for this: and he was intreated of us.

 

24. 그 때에 내가 제사장의 두목 중 십이 인 곧 세레뱌와 하사뱌와 그 형제 십 인을 따로 세우고

  Then I separated twelve of the chief of the priests , Sherebiah , Hashabiah , and ten of their brethren with them,

 

25. 저희에게 왕과 모사들과 방백들과 또 그곳에 있는 이스라엘 무리가 우리 하나님의 전을 위하여 드린 은과 금과 기명들을 달아서 주었으니

  And weighed unto them the silver , and the gold , and the vessels , even the offering of the house of our God , which the king , and his counsellors , and his lords , and all Israel there present , had offered :

 

26. 내가 달아서 저희 손에 준 것은 은이 육백오십 달란트요 은 기명이 일백 달란트요 금이 일백 달란트며

  I even weighed unto their hand six hundred and fifty talents of silver , and silver vessels an hundred talents , and of gold an hundred talents ;

 

27. 또 금잔이 이십 개라 중수는 일천 다릭이요 또 아름답고 빛나 금 같이 보배로운 놋그릇이 두 개라

  Also twenty basons of gold , of a thousand drams ; and two vessels of fine copper , precious as gold .

 

28. 내가 저희에게 이르되 너희는 여호와께 거룩한 자요 이 기명들도 거룩하고 그 은과 금은 너희 열조의 하나님 여호와께 즐거이 드린 예물이니

  And I said unto them, Ye are holy unto the Lord ; the vessels are holy also; and the silver and the gold are a freewill offering unto the Lord God of your fathers .

 

29. 너희는 예루살렘 여호와의 전 골방에 이르러 제사장의 두목들과 레위 사람의 두목들과 이스라엘 족장 앞에서 이 기명을 달기까지 삼가 지키라

  Watch ye, and keep them, until ye weigh them before the chief of the priests and the Levites , and chief of the fathers of Israel , at Jerusalem , in the chambers of the house of the Lord .

 

30. 이에 제사장들과 레위 사람들이 은과 금과 기명을 예루살렘 우리 하나님의 전으로 가져가려 하여 그 중수대로 받으니라

  So took the priests and the Levites the weight of the silver , and the gold , and the vessels , to bring them to Jerusalem unto the house of our God .

 

31. 정월 십이일에 우리가 아하와 강을 떠나 예루살렘으로 갈새 우리 하나님의 손이 우리를 도우사 대적과 길에 매복한 자의 손에서 건지신지라

  Then we departed from the river of Ahava on the twelfth day of the first month , to go unto Jerusalem : and the hand of our God was upon us, and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy , and of such as lay in wait by the way .

 

32. 이에 예루살렘에 이르러 거기서 삼 일을 유하고

  And we came to Jerusalem , and abode there three days .

 

33. 제사일에 우리 하나님의 전에서 은과 금과 기명을 달아서 제사장 우리아의 아들 므레못의 손에 붙이니 비느하스의 아들 엘르아살과 레위 사람 예수아의 아들 요사밧과 빈누이의 아들 노아댜가 함께 있어

  Now on the fourth day was the silver and the gold and the vessels weighed in the house of our God by the hand of Meremoth the son of Uriah the priest ; and with him was Eleazar the son of Phinehas ; and with them was Jozabad the son of Jeshua , and Noadiah the son of Binnui , Levites ;

 

34. 모든 것을 다 계수하고 달아보고 그 중수를 당장에 책에 기록하였느니라

  By number and by weight of every one: and all the weight was written at that time .

 

35. 사로잡혔던 자의 자손 곧 이방에서 돌아온 자들이 이스라엘 하나님께 번제를 드렸는데 이스라엘 전체를 위한 수송아지가 열둘이요 또 수양이 아흔여섯이요 어린 양이 일흔일곱이요 또 속죄제의 수염소가 열둘이니 모두 여호와께 드린 번제물이라

  Also the children of those that had been carried away , which were come out of the captivity , offered burnt offerings unto the God of Israel , twelve bullocks for all Israel , ninety and six rams , seventy and seven lambs , twelve he goats for a sin offering : all this was a burnt offering unto the Lord .

 

36. 무리가 또 왕의 조서를 왕의 관원과 강 서편 총독들에게 부치매 저희가 백성과 하나님의 전을 도왔느니라

  And they delivered the king’s commissions unto the king’s lieutenants , and to the governors on this side the river : and they furthered the people , and the house of God .

【스8:1 JFB】스8:1-14. Ezra's Companions from Babylon.
1. this is the genealogy of them that went up with me from Babylon—The number given here amounts to 1754. But this is the register of adult males only, and as there were women and children also (스8:21), the whole caravan may be considered as comprising between six thousand and seven thousand.

 

【스8:1 CWC】[EZRA AND HIS REFORMS]
1. The Commission and Its Execution, cc. 7, 8.
The first of these chapters tells who Ezra was (vv. 1-6), the date and object of his journey to Jerusalem (vv. 7-10), the nature and extent of his commission from the king (vv. 11-26), and his feelings in the premises (vv. 27, 28). The second, gives the number and genealogic record of the Jews who accompanied him (vv. 1-20), the spirit in which they entered upon the pilgrimage (vv. 21-23), the arrangements for guarding and delivering the treasurer in their keeping (vv. 24-30), their arrival and the fulfillment of their commission (vv. 31-36).
To consider chapter seven in detail, the Artaxerxes of verse one is considered as identical with the Ahasuerus of Esther's time, and Anstey regards him as identical also with the Darius Hystaspes named above. Ezra was a priest as well as a scribe (vv. 1-5). The "Seraiah" whose son (great grandson perhaps) he was, was the high priest slain by Nebuchadnezzar (왕하25:18). Jeshua, with whom we got acquainted in the last lesson, was also his grandson, but probably in another branch of the family. "Scribe" is the same as doctor, teacher, or rabbi, one learned in the law of Moses and Jewish traditions and customs (v. 10).
How this Persian king came to be so interested is not known, unless, as some think, Esther had already become his queen, which would explain it. Others believe that after the death of the leaders of the earlier company, Zerubbabel and his associates, matters became so disordered in the province that leading Jews in Persia pleaded with the king to appoint this reform commission.
Observe the power granted Ezra to study conditions, as we now say (v. 14), to collect funds (vv. 15, 16), levy tribute (vv. 21, 22), appoint magistrates and judges (v. 25), and execute penalties (v. 26).
As to chapter 8, the number of male adults accompanying Ezra was but 1,754, but there should be added women, children and servants, making perhaps three or four times that number. Attention is called to verses 21 and 23. The danger of such caravans from the marauding Arabs was so great as to make a military escort necessary. But Ezra's sensitive regard for God's honor before the heathen would not permit his asking for one. It was a strong test of faith to which he and his companions were equal, and which God honored. May the principle of its lesson not to be lost upon the reader.
2. Internal Conditions and How They Were Changed, cc. 9, 10.
This moral corruption (9:1, 2) is not inconceivable to those who know their own hearts and the nature of sin, but its effect on Ezra was what might have been expected under the circumstances (v. 3). His outward signs of grief were oriental. There is contagion in such grief which communicates itself to others animated by a like spirit (v. 4). It is thus a revival spreads. One soul is awakened, and he awakens another. And if he be a pastor or leader of the Lord's hosts, like Ezra, the people gather round him, and results follow (9:4; 10:1-44.)
Study the prayer carefully (vv. 5-15). The suppliant's attitude (v. 5), his sense of shame (v. 6), his unqualified confession (v. 7), his gratitude (vv. 8, 9), his deep conviction of sin (vv. 10-14), and his dependency only on divine mercy (v. 15).
Observe how God answered the prayer by graciously working on the people's hearts, the leaders first, and then the people generally. Shecanaiah (10:2), was a brave man in the attitude he took, for while his name does not appear in the subsequent list of offenders, yet those of his near relatives do (v. 26). Note the phrase (v. 2): "There is hope in Israel concerning this thing." Hope only, however, along the line of thorough repentance. Here is a text and subject-matter for a revival sermon.
Note the radical step taken by the leaders (v. 6-8), and its prompt result (v. 9). Also the judicious method of procedure as necessitated by the circumstances (vv. 10-17). This justifies the belief that provision was made for the unlawful wives and children that were put away.

【스8:15 JFB】스8:15-20. He Sends to Iddo for Ministers for the Temple Service.
15. I gathered them together to the river that runneth to Ahava—This river has not been ascertained. It is probable that the Ahava was one of the streams or numerous canals of Mesopotamia communicating with the Euphrates [Cyclopædia of Biblical Literature]. But it was certainly in Babylonia on the banks of that stream; and perhaps the place appointed for general rendezvous was in the neighborhood of a town of the same name. The emigrants encamped there for three days, according to Oriental custom, while the preparations for the departure were being completed and Ezra was arranging the order of the caravan.
I … found there none of the sons of Levi—that is, the ordinary Levites. Notwithstanding the privilege of exemption from all taxes granted to persons engaged in the temple service, none of the Levitical tribes were induced to join the settlement in Jerusalem; and it was even not without difficulty Ezra persuaded some of the priestly families to accompany him.

 

【스8:16 JFB】16-20. then sent I for Eliezer … with commandment unto Iddo the chief—Ezra sent this deputation, either by virtue of authority which by his priestly character he had over the Levites, or of the royal commission with which he was invested. The deputation was despatched to Iddo, who was a prince or chief of the Nethinims—for the Persian government allowed the Hebrews during their exile to retain their ecclesiastical government by their own chiefs, as well as to enjoy the privilege of free worship. Iddo's influence procured and brought to the camp at Ahava thirty-eight Levites, and two hundred twenty Nethinims, the descendants of the Gibeonites, who performed the servile duties of the temple.

21. Then I proclaimed a fast there—The dangers to travelling caravans from the Bedouin Arabs that prowl through the desert were in ancient times as great as they still are; and it seems that travellers usually sought the protection of a military escort. But Ezra had spoken so much to the king of the sufficiency of the divine care of His people that he would have blushed to apply for a guard of soldiers. Therefore he resolved that his followers should, by a solemn act of fasting and prayer, commit themselves to the Keeper of Israel. Their faith, considering the many and constant perils of a journey across the Bedouin regions, must have been great, and it was rewarded by the enjoyment of perfect safety during the whole way.

 

【스8:21 MHCC】Ezra procured Levites to go with him; but what will that avail, unless he have God with him? Those who seek God, are safe under the shadow of his wings, even in their greatest dangers; but those who forsake him, are always exposed. When entering upon any new state of life, our care should be, to bring none of the guilt of the sins of our former condition into it. When we are in any peril, let us be at peace with God, and then nothing can do us any real hurt. All our concerns about ourselves, our families, and our estates, it is our wisdom and duty, by prayer to commit to God, and to leave the care of them with him. And, on some occasions, we should decline advantages which are within our reach, lest we should cause others to stumble, and so our God be dishonoured. Let us ask wisdom of God, that we may know how to use or to refuse lawful things. We shall be no losers by venturing, suffering, or giving up for the Lord's sake. Their prayers were answered, and the event declared it. Never have any that sought God in earnest, found that they sought him in vain. In times of difficulty and danger, to set a season apart for secret or for social prayer, is the best method for relief we can take.

The treasures in silver and gold, according to the value of the Babylonian talent, amounted to about £515,000 sterling.

This alloy, much esteemed among the Jews, was composed of gold and other metals, which took on a high polish and was not subject to tarnish [Noyes].

Their health and security were marvellous during so long a journey. The pilgrim-caravans of the present day perform long journeys through the wildest deserts of the East under the protection of a firman from the Porte, and an escort of soldiers. But for a large body, composed as that of Ezra—of some thousands of men, women, and children, unaccustomed to travel, undisciplined to order, and without military strength, and with so large an amount of treasure tempting the cupidity of the marauding, plundering tribes of the desert—to accomplish a journey so long and so arduous in perfect safety, is one of the most astonishing events recorded in history. Nothing but the vigilant care of a superintending Providence could have brought them securely to their destination.

 

【스8:31 MHCC】Enemies laid wait for the Jews, but God protected them. Even the common perils of journeys, call us to go out with prayer, and to return with praise and thanksgiving. But what shall we render when the Lord has led us safely through the pilgrimage of life, through the gloomy vale of death, out of the reach of all our enemies, into everlasting happiness! Among their sacrifices they had a sin-offering. The atonement sweetens and secures every mercy to us, which will not be truly comfortable, unless sin be taken away, and our peace made with God. Then had the church rest. The expressions here used, direct us to the deliverance of sinners from spiritual bondage, and their pilgrimage to the heavenly Jerusalem, under the care and protection of their God and Saviour.

Now on the fourth day was the silver … weighed in the house of our God—The first three days after their arrival in Jerusalem were undoubtedly given to repose; on the next, the treasures were weighed and handed over to the custody of the officiating priests of the temple. The returned exiles offered burnt offerings, and Ezra delivered the royal commission to the satraps and inferior magistrates; while the Levitical portion of them lent all the assistance they could in performing the additional work which the arrival of so many new worshippers occasioned.
