This Ezra went up from Babylon ; and he was a ready scribe in the law of Moses , which the Lord God of Israel had given : and the king granted him all his request , according to the hand of the Lord his God upon him.

And there went up some of the children of Israel , and of the priests , and the Levites , and the singers , and the porters , and the Nethinims , unto Jerusalem , in the seventh year of Artaxerxes the king .

And he came to Jerusalem in the fifth month , which was in the seventh year of the king .
9. 정월 초하루에 바벨론에서 길을 떠났고 하나님의 선한 손의 도우심을 입어 오월 초하루에 예루살렘에 이르니라
For upon the first day of the first month began he to go up from Babylon , and on the first day of the fifth month came he to Jerusalem , according to the good hand of his God upon him.
10. 에스라가 여호와의 율법을 연구하여 준행하며 율례와 규례를 이스라엘에게 가르치기로 결심하였었더라
For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the Lord , and to do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and judgments .

11. 여호와의 계명의 말씀과 이스라엘에게 주신 율례의 학사인 학사겸 제사장 에스라에게 아닥사스다 왕이 내린 조서 초본은 아래와 같으니라
Now this is the copy of the letter that the king Artaxerxes gave unto Ezra the priest , the scribe , even a scribe of the words of the commandments of the Lord , and of his statutes to Israel .
12. 모든 왕의 왕 아닥사스다는 하늘의 하나님의 율법에 완전한 학사 겸 제사장 에스라에게
Artaxerxes , king of kings , unto Ezra the priest , a scribe of the law of the God of heaven , perfect peace, and at such a time .
13. 조서하노니 우리 나라에 있는 이스라엘 백성과 저희 제사장들과 레위 사람들 중에 예루살렘으로 올라갈 뜻이 있는 자는 누구든지 너와 함께 갈지어다
I make a decree , that all they of the people of Israel , and of his priests and Levites , in my realm , which are minded of their own freewill to go up to Jerusalem , go with thee .
14. 너는 네 손에 있는 네 하나님의 율법을 좇아 유다와 예루살렘의 정형을 살피기 위하여 왕과 일곱 모사의 보냄을 받았으니
Forasmuch as thou art sent of the king , and of his seven counsellors , to enquire concerning Judah and Jerusalem , according to the law of thy God which is in thine hand ;
15. 왕과 모사들이 예루살렘에 거하신 이스라엘 하나님께 성심으로 드리는 은금을 가져가고
And to carry the silver and gold , which the king and his counsellors have freely offered unto the God of Israel , whose habitation is in Jerusalem ,
16. 또 네가 바벨론 온 도에서 얻을 모든 은금과 및 백성과 제사장들이 예루살렘 그 하나님의 전을 위하여 즐거이 드릴 예물을 가져다가
And all the silver and gold that thou canst find in all the province of Babylon , with the freewill offering of the people , and of the priests , offering willingly for the house of their God which is in Jerusalem :
17. 그 돈으로 수송아지와 수양과 어린 양과 그 소제와 그 전제의 물품을 신속히 사서 예루살렘 네 하나님의 전 단 위에 드리고
That thou mayest buy speedily with this money bullocks , rams , lambs , with their meat offerings and their drink offerings , and offer them upon the altar of the house of your God which is in Jerusalem .
18. 그 나머지 은금은 너와 너의 형제가 선히 여기는 일에 너희 하나님의 뜻을 좇아 쓸지며
And whatsoever shall seem good to thee, and to thy brethren , to do with the rest of the silver and the gold , that do after the will of your God .
19. 네 하나님의 전에서 섬기는 일을 위하여 네게 준 기명은 예루살렘 하나님 앞에 드리고
The vessels also that are given thee for the service of the house of thy God , those deliver thou before the God of Jerusalem .
20. 그 외에도 네 하나님의 전에 쓰일 것이 있어서 네가 드리고자 하거든 무엇이든지 왕의 내탕고에서 취하여 드릴지니라
And whatsoever more shall be needful for the house of thy God , which thou shalt have occasion to bestow , bestow it out of the king’s treasure house .
21. 나 곧 나 아닥사스다 왕이 강 서편 모든 고지기에게 조서를 내려 이르기를 하늘의 하나님의 율법의 학사 겸 제사장 에스라가 무릇 너희에게 구하는 것은 신속히 시행하되
And I , even I Artaxerxes the king , do make a decree to all the treasurers which are beyond the river , that whatsoever Ezra the priest , the scribe of the law of the God of heaven , shall require of you, it be done speedily ,
22. 은은 일백 달란트까지, 밀은 일백 고르까지, 포도주는 일백 밧까지, 기름도 일백 밧까지 하고 소금은 정수없이 하라
Unto an hundred talents of silver , and to an hundred measures of wheat , and to an hundred baths of wine , and to an hundred baths of oil , and salt without prescribing how much.
23. 무릇 하늘의 하나님의 전을 위하여 하늘의 하나님의 명하신 것은 삼가 행하라 어찌하여 진노가 왕과 왕자의 나라에 임하게 하랴
Whatsoever is commanded by the God of heaven , let it be diligently done for the house of the God of heaven : for why should there be wrath against the realm of the king and his sons ?
24. 내가 너희에게 이르노니 제사장들이나 레위 사람들이나 노래하는 자들이나 문지기들이나 느디님 사람들이나 혹 하나님의 전에서 일하는 자들에게 조공과 잡세와 부세를 받는 것이 불가하니라 하였노라
Also we certify you, that touching any of the priests and Levites , singers , porters , Nethinims , or ministers of this house of God , it shall not be lawful to impose toll , tribute , or custom , upon them.
25. 에스라여 너는 네 손에 있는 네 하나님의 지혜를 따라 네 하나님의 율법을 아는 자로 유사와 재판관을 삼아 강 서편 모든 백성을 재판하게 하고 그 알지 못하는 자는 너희가 가르치라
And thou , Ezra , after the wisdom of thy God , that is in thine hand , set magistrates and judges , which may judge all the people that are beyond the river , all such as know the laws of thy God ; and teach ye them that know them not .
26. 무릇 네 하나님의 명령과 왕의 명령을 준행치 아니하는 자는 속히 그 죄를 정하여 혹 죽이거나 정배하거나 가산을 적몰하거나 옥에 가둘지니라 하였더라
And whosoever will not do the law of thy God , and the law of the king , let judgment be executed speedily upon him , whether it be unto death , or to banishment , or to confiscation of goods , or to imprisonment .
27. 우리 열조의 하나님 여호와를 송축할지로다 그가 왕의 마음에 예루살렘 여호와의 전을 아름답게 할 뜻을 두시고
Blessed be the Lord God of our fathers , which hath put such a thing as this in the king’s heart , to beautify the house of the Lord which is in Jerusalem :
28. 또 나로 왕과 그 모사들의 앞과 왕의 권세 있는 모든 방백의 앞에서 은혜를 얻게 하셨도다 나의 하나님 여호와의 손이 나의 위에 있으므로 내가 힘을 얻어 이스라엘 중에 두목을 모아 나와 함께 올라오게 하였노라
And hath extended mercy unto me before the king , and his counsellors , and before all the king’s mighty princes . And I was strengthened as the hand of the Lord my God was upon me, and I gathered together out of Israel chief men to go up with me.

【스7:1 JFB】스7:1-10. Ezra Goes Up to Jerusalem.
1, 2. in the reign of Artaxerxes—the Ahasuerus of Esther.
Ezra the son of Seraiah—that is, grandson or great-grandson. Seraiah was the high priest put to death by Nebuchadnezzar at Riblah (왕하25:18). A period of one hundred thirty years had elapsed between that catastrophe and the journey of Ezra to Jerusalem. As a grandson of Seraiah, namely, Jeshua, who held the office of high priest, had accompanied Zerubbabel in the first caravan of returning exiles, Ezra must have been in all probability a grandson, descended, too, from a younger son, the older branch being in possession of the pontificate.

1. The Commission and Its Execution, cc. 7, 8.
The first of these chapters tells who Ezra was (vv. 1-6), the date and object of his journey to Jerusalem (vv. 7-10), the nature and extent of his commission from the king (vv. 11-26), and his feelings in the premises (vv. 27, 28). The second, gives the number and genealogic record of the Jews who accompanied him (vv. 1-20), the spirit in which they entered upon the pilgrimage (vv. 21-23), the arrangements for guarding and delivering the treasurer in their keeping (vv. 24-30), their arrival and the fulfillment of their commission (vv. 31-36).
To consider chapter seven in detail, the Artaxerxes of verse one is considered as identical with the Ahasuerus of Esther's time, and Anstey regards him as identical also with the Darius Hystaspes named above. Ezra was a priest as well as a scribe (vv. 1-5). The "Seraiah" whose son (great grandson perhaps) he was, was the high priest slain by Nebuchadnezzar (왕하25:18). Jeshua, with whom we got acquainted in the last lesson, was also his grandson, but probably in another branch of the family. "Scribe" is the same as doctor, teacher, or rabbi, one learned in the law of Moses and Jewish traditions and customs (v. 10).
How this Persian king came to be so interested is not known, unless, as some think, Esther had already become his queen, which would explain it. Others believe that after the death of the leaders of the earlier company, Zerubbabel and his associates, matters became so disordered in the province that leading Jews in Persia pleaded with the king to appoint this reform commission.
Observe the power granted Ezra to study conditions, as we now say (v. 14), to collect funds (vv. 15, 16), levy tribute (vv. 21, 22), appoint magistrates and judges (v. 25), and execute penalties (v. 26).
As to chapter 8, the number of male adults accompanying Ezra was but 1,754, but there should be added women, children and servants, making perhaps three or four times that number. Attention is called to verses 21 and 23. The danger of such caravans from the marauding Arabs was so great as to make a military escort necessary. But Ezra's sensitive regard for God's honor before the heathen would not permit his asking for one. It was a strong test of faith to which he and his companions were equal, and which God honored. May the principle of its lesson not to be lost upon the reader.
2. Internal Conditions and How They Were Changed, cc. 9, 10.
This moral corruption (9:1, 2) is not inconceivable to those who know their own hearts and the nature of sin, but its effect on Ezra was what might have been expected under the circumstances (v. 3). His outward signs of grief were oriental. There is contagion in such grief which communicates itself to others animated by a like spirit (v. 4). It is thus a revival spreads. One soul is awakened, and he awakens another. And if he be a pastor or leader of the Lord's hosts, like Ezra, the people gather round him, and results follow (9:4; 10:1-44.)
Study the prayer carefully (vv. 5-15). The suppliant's attitude (v. 5), his sense of shame (v. 6), his unqualified confession (v. 7), his gratitude (vv. 8, 9), his deep conviction of sin (vv. 10-14), and his dependency only on divine mercy (v. 15).
Observe how God answered the prayer by graciously working on the people's hearts, the leaders first, and then the people generally. Shecanaiah (10:2), was a brave man in the attitude he took, for while his name does not appear in the subsequent list of offenders, yet those of his near relatives do (v. 26). Note the phrase (v. 2): "There is hope in Israel concerning this thing." Hope only, however, along the line of thorough repentance. Here is a text and subject-matter for a revival sermon.
Note the radical step taken by the leaders (v. 6-8), and its prompt result (v. 9). Also the judicious method of procedure as necessitated by the circumstances (vv. 10-17). This justifies the belief that provision was made for the unlawful wives and children that were put away.

When he went, many went with him; he obtained favour from his king, by the Divine favour. Every creature is that to us, which God makes it to be. We must see the hand of God in the events that befal us, and acknowledge him with thankfulness.

This Ezra … was a ready scribe in the law of Moses—The term "scribe" does not mean merely a penman, nor even an attorney well versed in forms of law and skilled in the method of preparing public or private deeds. He was a rabbi, or doctor, learned in the Mosaic law, and in all that related to the civil and ecclesiastical polity and customs of the Hebrew people. Scribes of this description possessed great authority and influence (compare 마23:25; 막12:28).
the king granted him all his request—left Babylon entrusted with an important commission to be executed in Jerusalem. The manner in which he obtained this office is minutely related in a subsequent passage. Here it is noticed, but with a pious acknowledgment of the divine grace and goodness which disposed the royal mind in favor of Ezra's patriotic objects. The Levites, &c., did not go at that time, but are mentioned here by anticipation.

As he left Babylon on the Jewish New Year's Day (스7:9), the journey must have occupied not less than four months (a long period), but it was necessary to move at a slow pace and by short, easy stages, as he had to conduct a large caravan of poor people, including women, children, and all their household gear (see on 스8:24).

11. this is the copy of the letter that the king Artaxerxes gave—The measure which this document authorized, and the remarkable interest in the Jews displayed in it, were most probably owing to the influence of Esther, who is thought to have been raised to the high position of queen a few months previous to the departure of Ezra [Hales]. According to others, who adopt a different chronology, it was more probably pressed upon the attention of the Persian court by Ezra, who, like Daniel, showed the prophecies to the king; or by some leading Jews on his accession, who, seeing the unsettled and disordered state of the colony after the deaths of Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Haggai, and Zechariah, recommended the appointment of a commission to reform abuses, suppress disorder, and enforce the observance of the law.
【스7:11 MHCC】The liberality of heathen kings to support the worship of God, reproached the conduct of many kings of Judah, and will rise up in judgment against the covetousness of wealthy professed Christians, who will not promote the cause of God. But the weapons of Christian ministers are not carnal. Faithful preaching, holy lives, fervent prayers, and patient suffering when called to it, are the means to bring men into obedience to Christ.

Artaxerxes, king of kings—That title might have been assumed as, with literal truth, applicable to him, since many of the tributary princes of his empire still retained the name and authority of kings. But it was a probably a mere Orientalism, denoting a great and powerful prince, as the heaven of heavens signified the highest heaven, and vanity of vanities, the greatest vanity. This vainglorious title was assumed by the kings of Assyria, from whom it passed to the sovereigns of Persia.
unto Ezra the priest, a scribe of the law of the God of heaven—The appointment of Ezra to this influential mission was of the highest importance to the Hebrew people, as a large proportion of them were become, in a great measure, strangers both to the language and the institutions of their forefathers.

The document describes, with great clearness and precision, the nature of Ezra's commission and the extent of power and prerogatives with which he was invested. It gave him authority, in the first place, to organize the colony in Judea and institute a regular government, according to the laws of the Hebrew people, and by magistrates and rulers of their own nation (스7:25, 26), with power to punish offenders by fines, imprisonment, exile, or death, according to the degree of their criminality. Secondly, he was empowered to carry a large donation in money, partly from the royal treasury and partly raised by voluntary contributions among his countrymen, to create a fund out of which to make suitable provision for maintaining the regular worship of God in Jerusalem (스7:16, 17). Thirdly, the Persian officers in Syria were commanded to afford him every assistance by gifts of money within a certain specified limit, in carrying out the objects of his patriotic mission (스7:21).

Fourthly, Artaxerxes gave his royal sanction in the establishment of the divine law, which exempted priests and Levites from taxation or tribute and confirmed to them the exclusive right to officiate in the sacred services of the sanctuary. And, finally, in the expression of the king's desire for the divine blessing upon the king and his government (스7:23), we see the strong persuasion which pervaded the Persian court, and had been produced by the captivity of the Hebrew people, as to the being and directing providence of the God they worshipped. It will be observed, however, that the commission related exclusively to the rebuilding of the temple—not of the walls. The Samaritans (스4:20-22) had succeeded in alarming the Persian court by their representations of the danger to the empire of fortifying a city notorious for the turbulent character of its inhabitants and the prowess of its kings.

27. Blessed be the Lord God of our fathers—This devout thanksgiving is in unison with the whole character of Ezra, who discerns the hand of God in every event, and is always ready to express a pious acknowledgment for the divine goodness.
【스7:27 MHCC】Two things Ezra blessed God for: 1. For his commission. If any good appear in our hearts, or in the hearts of others, we must own that God put it there, and bless him; it is he that worketh in us, both to will and to do that which is good. 2. For his encouragement: God has extended mercy to me. Ezra was a man of courage, yet he ascribed this not to his own heart, but to God's hand. If God give us his hand, we are bold and cheerful; if he withdraw it, we are weak as water. Whatever we are enabled to do for God and those around us, God must have all the glory.
