1. 여호수아가 아이를 취하여 진멸하되 여리고와 그 왕에게 행한 것 같이 아이와 그 왕에게 행한 것과 또 기브온 거민이 이스라엘과 화친하여 그 중에 있다함을 예루살렘 왕 아도니세덱이 듣고
Now it came to pass, when Adoni–zedek king of Jerusalem had heard how Joshua had taken Ai , and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to Jericho and her king , so he had done to Ai and her king ; and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel , and were among them;
2. 크게 두려워하였으니 이는 기브온은 왕도와 같은 큰 성임이요 아이보다 크고 그 사람들은 다 강함이라
That they feared greatly , because Gibeon was a great city , as one of the royal cities , and because it was greater than Ai , and all the men thereof were mighty .

Wherefore Adoni–zedek king of Jerusalem sent unto Hoham king of Hebron , and unto Piram king of Jarmuth , and unto Japhia king of Lachish , and unto Debir king of Eglon , saying ,
4. 내게로 올라와 나를 도우라 우리가 기브온을 치자 이는 기브온이 여호수아와 이스라엘 자손으로 더불어 화친하였음이니라 하매
Come up unto me, and help me, that we may smite Gibeon : for it hath made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel .
5. 이러므로 아모리 다섯 왕 곧 예루살렘 왕과 헤브론 왕과 야르뭇 왕과 라기스 왕과 에글론 왕이 함께 모여 자기들의 모든 군대를 거느리고 올라와서 기브온에 대진하고 싸우니라
Therefore the five kings of the Amorites , the king of Jerusalem , the king of Hebron , the king of Jarmuth , the king of Lachish , the king of Eglon , gathered themselves together , and went up , they and all their hosts , and encamped before Gibeon , and made war against it.
6. 기브온 사람들이 길갈 진에 보내어 여호수아에게 전언하되 당신의 종들 돕기를 더디게 마시고 속히 우리에게 올라와서 우리를 구조하소서 산지에 거하는 아모리 사람의 왕들이 다 모여 우리를 치나이다 하매
And the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal , saying , Slack not thy hand from thy servants ; come up to us quickly , and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered together against us.
7. 여호수아가 모든 군사와 용사로 더불어 길갈에서 올라가니라
So Joshua ascended from Gilgal , he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour .
8. 때에 여호와께서 여호수아에게 이르시되 그들을 두려워 말라 내가 그들을 네 손에 붙였으니 그들의 한 사람도 너를 당할 자 없으리라 하신지라
And the Lord said unto Joshua , Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand ; there shall not a man of them stand before thee.
9. 여호수아가 길갈에서 밤새도록 올라가서 그들에게 갑자기 이르니
Joshua therefore came unto them suddenly , and went up from Gilgal all night .
10. 여호와께서 그들을 이스라엘 앞에서 패하게 하시므로 여호수아가 그들을 기브온에서 크게 도륙하고 벧호론에 올라가는 비탈에서 추격하여 아세가와 막게다까지 이르니라
And the Lord discomfited them before Israel , and slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon , and chased them along the way that goeth up to Beth–horon , and smote them to Azekah , and unto Makkedah .

11. 그들이 이스라엘 앞에서 도망하여 벧호론의 비탈에서 내려갈 때에 여호와께서 하늘에서 큰 덩이 우박을 아세가에 이르기까지 내리우시매 그들이 죽었으니 이스라엘 자손의 칼에 죽은 자보다 우박에 죽은 자가 더욱 많았더라
And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel , and were in the going down to Beth–horon , that the Lord cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah , and they died : they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword .

Then spake Joshua to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel , and he said in the sight of Israel , Sun , stand thou still upon Gibeon ; and thou, Moon , in the valley of Ajalon .
13. 태양이 머물고 달이 그치기를 백성이 그 대적에게 원수를 갚도록 하였느니라 야살의 책에 기록되기를 태양이 중천에 머물러서 거의 종일토록 속히 내려가지 아니하였다 하지 아니하였느냐
And the sun stood still , and the moon stayed , until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies . Is not this written in the book of Jasher ? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven , and hasted not to go down about a whole day .
14. 여호와께서 사람의 목소리를 들으신 이 같은 날은 전에도 없었고 후에도 없었나니 이는 여호와께서 이스라엘을 위하여 싸우셨음이니라
And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the Lord hearkened unto the voice of a man : for the Lord fought for Israel .
15. 여호수아가 온 이스라엘로 더불어 길갈 진으로 돌아왔더라
And Joshua returned , and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal .
16. 그 다섯 왕이 도망하여 막게다의 굴에 숨었더니
But these five kings fled , and hid themselves in a cave at Makkedah .
17. 혹이 여호수아에게 고하여 가로되 막게다의 굴에 그 다섯 왕의 숨은 것을 발견하였나이다
And it was told Joshua , saying , The five kings are found hid in a cave at Makkedah .
18. 여호수아가 가로되 굴 어귀에 큰 돌을 굴려 막고 사람을 그 곁에 두어 그들을 지키게 하고
And Joshua said , Roll great stones upon the mouth of the cave , and set men by it for to keep them:
19. 너희는 지체 말고 너희 대적의 뒤를 따라가 그 후군을 쳐서 그들로 자기들의 성읍에 들어가지 못하게 하라 너희 하나님 여호와께서 그들을 너희 손에 붙이셨느니라 하고
And stay ye not, but pursue after your enemies , and smite the hindmost of them; suffer them not to enter into their cities : for the Lord your God hath delivered them into your hand .
20. 여호수아와 이스라엘 자손이 그들을 크게 도륙하여 거의 진멸시켰고 그 남은 몇 사람은 견고한 성으로 들어가므로
And it came to pass, when Joshua and the children of Israel had made an end of slaying them with a very great slaughter , till they were consumed , that the rest which remained of them entered into fenced cities .
21. 모든 백성이 평안히 막게다 진으로 돌아와 여호수아에게 이르렀으나 혀를 놀려 이스라엘 자손을 대적하는 자가 없었더라
And all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace : none moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel .
22. 때에 여호수아가 가로되 굴 어귀를 열고 그 굴에서 그 다섯 왕을 내게로 끌어내라 하매
Then said Joshua , Open the mouth of the cave , and bring out those five kings unto me out of the cave .
23. 그들이 그대로 하여 그 다섯 왕 곧 예루살렘 왕과 헤브론 왕과 야르뭇 왕과 라기스 왕과 에글론 왕을 굴에서 그에게로 끌어내니라
And they did so, and brought forth those five kings unto him out of the cave , the king of Jerusalem , the king of Hebron , the king of Jarmuth , the king of Lachish , and the king of Eglon .
24. 그 왕들을 여호수아에게로 끌어내매 여호수아가 이스라엘 모든 사람을 부르고 자기와 함께 갔던 군장들에게 이르되 가까이 와서 이 왕들의 목을 발로 밟으라 가까이 와서 그들의 목을 밟으매
And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua , that Joshua called for all the men of Israel , and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near , put your feet upon the necks of these kings . And they came near , and put their feet upon the necks of them.
25. 여호수아가 군장들에게 이르되 두려워 말며 놀라지 말고 마음을 강하게 하고 담대히 하라 너희가 더불어 싸우는 모든 대적에게 여호와께서 다 이와 같이 하시리라 하고
And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed , be strong and of good courage : for thus shall the Lord do to all your enemies against whom ye fight .
26. 그 후에 여호수아가 그 왕들을 쳐 죽여 다섯 나무에 매어 달고 석양까지 나무에 달린대로 두었다가
And afterward Joshua smote them, and slew them, and hanged them on five trees : and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening .
27. 해 질 때에 여호수아가 명하매 그 시체를 나무에서 내리어 그들의 숨었던 굴에 들여 던지고 굴 어귀를 큰 돌로 막았더니 오늘날까지 있더라
And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun , that Joshua commanded , and they took them down off the trees , and cast them into the cave wherein they had been hid , and laid great stones in the cave’s mouth , which remain until this very day .
28. 그 날에 여호수아가 막게다를 취하고 칼날로 그 성읍과 왕을 쳐서 그 성읍과 그 중에 있는 모든 사람을 진멸하여 한 사람도 남기지 아니하였으니 막게다 왕에게 행한 것이 여리고 왕에게 행한 것과 일반이었더라
And that day Joshua took Makkedah , and smote it with the edge of the sword , and the king thereof he utterly destroyed , them, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain : and he did to the king of Makkedah as he did unto the king of Jericho .
29. 여호수아가 온 이스라엘로 더불어 막게다에서 립나로 나아가서 립나와 싸우매
Then Joshua passed from Makkedah , and all Israel with him, unto Libnah , and fought against Libnah :
30. 여호와께서 또 그 성읍과 그 왕을 이스라엘의 손에 붙이신지라 칼날로 그 성읍과 그 중의 모든 사람을 쳐서 멸하여 한 사람도 남기지 아니하였으니 그 왕에게 행한 것이 여리고 왕에게 행한 것과 일반이었더라
And the Lord delivered it also, and the king thereof, into the hand of Israel ; and he smote it with the edge of the sword , and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain in it; but did unto the king thereof as he did unto the king of Jericho .
31. 여호수아가 또 온 이스라엘로 더불어 립나에서 라기스로 나아가서 대진하고 싸우더니
And Joshua passed from Libnah , and all Israel with him, unto Lachish , and encamped against it, and fought against it:
32. 여호와께서 라기스를 이스라엘의 손에 붙이신지라 이튿날에 그 성읍을 취하고 칼날로 그것과 그 중의 모든 사람을 쳐서 멸하였으니 립나에 행한 것과 일반이었더라
And the Lord delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel , which took it on the second day , and smote it with the edge of the sword , and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah .
33. 때에 게셀 왕 호람이 라기스를 도우려고 올라오므로 여호수아가 그와 그 백성을 쳐서 한 사람도 남기지 아니하였더라
Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish ; and Joshua smote him and his people , until he had left him none remaining .
34. 여호수아가 온 이스라엘로 더불어 라기스에서 에글론으로 나아가서 대진하고 싸워
And from Lachish Joshua passed unto Eglon , and all Israel with him; and they encamped against it, and fought against it:
35. 그 날에 그 성읍을 취하고 칼날로 그것을 쳐서 그 중에 있는 모든 사람을 당일에 진멸하였으니 라기스에 행한 것과 일반이었더라
And they took it on that day , and smote it with the edge of the sword , and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed that day , according to all that he had done to Lachish .
36. 여호수아가 또 온 이스라엘로 더불어 에글론에서 헤브론으로 올라가서 싸워
And Joshua went up from Eglon , and all Israel with him, unto Hebron ; and they fought against it:
37. 그 성읍을 취하고 그것과 그 왕과 그 속한 성읍들과 그 중의 모든 사람을 칼날로 쳐서 하나도 남기지 아니하였으니 그 성읍과 그 중의 모든 사람을 진멸한 것이 에글론에 행한 것과 일반이었더라
And they took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword , and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining , according to all that he had done to Eglon ; but destroyed it utterly, and all the souls that were therein.
38. 여호수아가 온 이스라엘로 더불어 돌아와서 드빌에 이르러 싸워
And Joshua returned , and all Israel with him, to Debir ; and fought against it:
39. 그 성읍과 그 왕과 그 속한 성읍들을 취하고 칼날로 그 성읍을 쳐서 그 중의 모든 사람을 진멸하고 하나도 남기지 아니하였으니 드빌과 그 왕에게 행한 것이 헤브론에 행한 것과 일반이요 립나와 그 왕에게 행한 것과 일반이었더라
And he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof; and they smote them with the edge of the sword , and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining : as he had done to Hebron , so he did to Debir , and to the king thereof; as he had done also to Libnah , and to her king .
40. 이와 같이 여호수아가 온 땅 곧 산지와 남방과 평지와 경사지와 그 모든 왕을 쳐서 하나도 남기지 아니하고 무릇 호흡이 있는 자는 진멸하였으니 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와의 명하신 것과 같았더라
So Joshua smote all the country of the hills , and of the south , and of the vale , and of the springs , and all their kings : he left none remaining , but utterly destroyed all that breathed , as the Lord God of Israel commanded .
41. 여호수아가 또 가데스 바네아에서 가사까지와 온 고센 땅을 기브온에 이르기까지 치매
And Joshua smote them from Kadesh–barnea even unto Gaza , and all the country of Goshen , even unto Gibeon .
42. 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와께서 이스라엘을 위하여 싸우신고로 여호수아가 이 모든 왕과 그 땅을 단번에 취하니라
And all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time , because the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel .
43. 여호수아가 온 이스라엘로 더불어 길갈 진으로 돌아왔더라
And Joshua returned , and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal .

【수10:1 JFB】수10:1-5. Five Kings War against Gibeon.
1. Adoni-zedek—"lord of righteousness"—nearly synonymous with Melchizedek, "king of righteousness." These names were common titles of the Jebusite kings.
Jerusalem—The original name, "Salem" (창14:18; 시76:2), was superseded by that here given, which signifies "a peaceful possession," or "a vision of peace," in allusion, as some think, to the strikingly symbolic scene (창22:14) represented on the mount whereon that city was afterwards built.
inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them—that is, the Israelites; had made an alliance with that people, and acknowledging their supremacy, were living on terms of friendly intercourse with them.
【수10:1 MHCC】When sinners leave the service of Satan and the friendship of the world, that they make peace with God and join Israel, they must not marvel if the world hate them, if their former friends become foes. By such methods Satan discourages many who are convinced of their danger, and almost persuaded to be Christians, but fear the cross. These things should quicken us to apply to God for protection, help, and deliverance.
【수10:2 JFB】2. they feared greatly—The dread inspired by the rapid conquests of the Israelites had been immensely increased by the fact of a state so populous and so strong as Gibeon having found it expedient to submit to the power and the terms of the invaders.
as one of the royal cities—Although itself a republic (수9:3), it was large and well-fortified, like those places in which the chiefs of the country usually established their residence.

Wherefore Adoni-zedek … sent, … saying, Come up unto me, and help me—A combined attack was meditated on Gibeon, with a view not only to punish its people for their desertion of the native cause, but by its overthrow to interpose a barrier to the farther inroads of the Israelites. This confederacy among the mountaineers of Southern Palestine was formed and headed by the king of Jerusalem, because his territory was most exposed to danger, Gibeon being only six miles distant, and because he evidently possessed some degree of pre-eminence over his royal neighbors.
【수10:5 JFB】5. the five kings of the Amorites—The settlement of this powerful and warlike tribe lay within the confines of Moab; but having also acquired extensive possessions on the southwest of the Jordan, their name, as the ruling power, seems to have been given to the region generally (삼하21:2), although Hebron was inhabited by Hittites or Hivites (수11:19), and Jerusalem by Jebusites (수15:63).

6-8. the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua—Their appeal was urgent and their claim to protection irresistible, on the ground, not only of kindness and sympathy, but of justice. In attacking the Canaanites, Joshua had received from God a general assurance of success (수1:5). But the intelligence of so formidable a combination among the native princes seems to have depressed his mind with the anxious and dispiriting idea that it was a chastisement for the hasty and inconsiderate alliance entered into with the Gibeonites. It was evidently to be a struggle of life and death, not only to Gibeon, but to the Israelites. And in this view the divine communication that was made to him was seasonable and animating. He seems to have asked the counsel of God and received an answer, before setting out on the expedition.
【수10:7 MHCC】The meanest and most feeble, who have just begun to trust the Lord, are as much entitled to be protected as those who have long and faithfully been his servants. It is our duty to defend the afflicted, who, like the Gibeonites, are brought into trouble on our account, or for the sake of the gospel. Joshua would not forsake his new vassals. How much less shall our true Joshua fail those who trust in Him! We may be wanting in our trust, but our trust never can want success. Yet God's promises are not to slacken and do away, but to quicken and encourage our endeavours. Notice the great faith of Joshua, and the power of God answering it by the miraculous staying of the sun, that the day of Israel's victories might be made longer. Joshua acted on this occasion by impulse on his mind from the Spirit of God. It was not necessary that Joshua should speak, or the miracle be recorded, according to the modern terms of astronomy. The sun appeared to the Israelites over Gibeon, and the moon over the valley of Ajalon, and there they appeared to be stopped on their course for one whole day. Is any thing too hard for the Lord? forms a sufficient answer to ten thousand difficulties, which objectors have in every age started against the truth of God as revealed in his written word. Proclamation was hereby made to the neighbouring nations, Behold the works of the Lord, and say, What nation is there so great as Israel, who has God so nigh unto them?

Joshua therefore came upon them suddenly—This is explained in the following clause, where he is described as having accomplished, by a forced march of picked men, in one night, a distance of twenty-six miles, which, according to the slow pace of Eastern armies and caravans, had formerly been a three days' journey (수9:17).

10, 11. the Lord discomfited them—Hebrew, "terrified," confounded the Amorite allies, probably by a fearful storm of lightning and thunder. So the word is usually employed (삼상7:10; 시18:13; 144:6).
and slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon—This refers to the attack of the Israelites upon the besiegers. It is evident that there had been much hard fighting around the heights of Gibeon, for the day was far spent before the enemy took to flight.
chased them along the way that goeth up to Beth-horon—that is, "the House of Caves," of which there are still traces existing. There were two contiguous villages of that name, upper and nether. Upper Beth-horon was nearest Gibeon—about ten miles distant, and approached by a gradual ascent through a long and precipitous ravine. This was the first stage of the flight. The fugitives had crossed the high ridge of Upper Beth-horon, and were in full flight down the descent to Beth-horon the Nether. The road between the two places is so rocky and rugged that there is a path made by means of steps cut in the rock [Robinson]. Down this pass Joshua continued his victorious rout. Here it was that the Lord interposed, assisting His people by means of a storm, which, having been probably gathering all day, burst with such irresistible fury, that "they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword." The Oriental hailstorm is a terrific agent; the hailstones are masses of ice, large as walnuts, and sometimes as two fists; their prodigious size, and the violence with which they fall, make them always very injurious to property, and often fatal to life. The miraculous feature of this tempest, which fell on the Amorite army, was the entire preservation of the Israelites from its destructive ravages.
【수10:12 JFB】수10:12-15. The Sun and Moon Stand Still at the Word of Joshua.
12-15. Then spake Joshua to the Lord … and … he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still … and thou, Moon—The inspired author here breaks off the thread of his history of this miraculous victory to introduce a quotation from an ancient poem, in which the mighty acts of that day were commemorated. The passage, which is parenthetical, contains a poetical description of the victory which was miraculously gained by the help of God, and forms an extract from "the book of Jasher," that is, "the upright"—an anthology, or collection of national songs, in honor of renowned and eminently pious heroes. The language of a poem is not to be literally interpreted; and therefore, when the sun and moon are personified, addressed as intelligent beings, and represented as standing still, the explanation is that the light of the sun and moon was supernaturally prolonged by the same laws of refraction and reflection that ordinarily cause the sun to appear above the horizon, when it is in reality below it [Keil, Bush]. Gibeon ("a hill") was now at the back of the Israelites, and the height would soon have intercepted the rays of the setting sun. The valley of Ajalon ("stags") was before them, and so near that it was sometimes called "the valley of Gibeon" (사28:21). It would seem, from 수10:14, that the command of Joshua was in reality a prayer to God for the performance of this miracle; and that, although the prayers of eminently good men like Moses often prevailed with God, never was there on any other occasion so astonishing a display of divine power made in behalf of His people, as in answer to the prayer of Joshua. 수10:15 is the end of the quotation from Jasher; and it is necessary to notice this, as the fact described in it is recorded in due course, and the same words, by the sacred historian (수10:43).
【수10:15 MHCC】None moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel. This shows their perfect safety. The kings were called to an account, as rebels against the Israel of God. Refuges of lies will but secure for God's judgment. God punished the abominable wickedness of these kings, the measure of whose iniquity was now full. And by this public act of justice, done upon these ringleaders of the Canaanites in sin, he would possess his people with the greater dread and detestation of the sins of the nations that God cast out from before them. Here is a type and figure of Christ's victories over the powers of darkness, and of believers' victories through him. In our spiritual conflicts we must not be satisfied with obtaining some important victory. We must pursue our scattered enemies, searching out the remains of sin as they rise up in our hearts, and thus pursue the conquest. In so doing, the Lord will afford light until the warfare be accomplished.

at Makkedah—The pursuit was continued, without interruption, to Makkedah at the foot of the western mountains, where Joshua seems to have halted with the main body of his troops while a detachment was sent forward to scour the country in pursuit of the remaining stragglers, a few of whom succeeded in reaching the neighboring cities. The last act, probably the next day, was the disposal of the prisoners, among whom the five kings were consigned to the infamous doom of being slain (신20:16, 17); and then their corpses were suspended on five trees till the evening.

28-42. that day Joshua took Makkedah—In this and the following verses is described the rapid succession of victory and extermination which swept the whole of southern Palestine into the hands of Israel. "All these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time, because the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel. And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal."
【수10:28 MHCC】Joshua made speed in taking these cities. See what a great deal of work may be done in a little time, if we will be diligent, and improve our opportunities. God here showed his hatred of the idolatries and other abominations of which the Canaanites had been guilty, and shows us how great the provocation was, by the greatness of the destruction brought upon them. Here also was typified the destruction of all the enemies of the Lord Jesus, who, having slighted the riches of his grace, must for ever feel the weight of his wrath. The Lord fought for Israel. They could not have gotten the victory, if God had not undertaken the battle. We conquer when God fights for us; if he be for us, who can be against us?
