Thus saith the Lord , Where is the bill of your mother’s divorcement , whom I have put away ? or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold you? Behold, for your iniquities have ye sold yourselves, and for your transgressions is your mother put away .
Wherefore, when I came , was there no man ? when I called , was there none to answer ? Is my hand shortened at all , that it cannot redeem ? or have I no power to deliver ? behold, at my rebuke I dry up the sea , I make the rivers a wilderness : their fish stinketh , because there is no water , and dieth for thirst .
I clothe the heavens with blackness , and I make sackcloth their covering .
The Lord God hath given me the tongue of the learned , that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary : he wakeneth morning by morning , he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned .
The Lord God hath opened mine ear , and I was not rebellious , neither turned away back .
I gave my back to the smiters , and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting .
For the Lord God will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded : therefore have I set my face like a flint , and I know that I shall not be ashamed .
He is near that justifieth me; who will contend with me? let us stand together : who is mine adversary ? let him come near to me.
Behold, the Lord God will help me; who is he that shall condemn me? lo, they all shall wax old as a garment ; the moth shall eat them up .
Who is among you that feareth the Lord , that obeyeth the voice of his servant , that walketh in darkness , and hath no light ? let him trust in the name of the Lord , and stay upon his God .
Behold, all ye that kindle a fire , that compass yourselves about with sparks : walk in the light of your fire , and in the sparks that ye have kindled . This shall ye have of mine hand ; ye shall lie down in sorrow .

【사50:1 JFB】사50:1-11. The Judgments on Israel Were Provoked by Their Crimes, yet They Are Not Finally Cast Off by God.
1. Where … mothers divorcement—Zion is "the mother"; the Jews are the children; and God the Husband and Father (사54:5; 62:5; 렘3:14). Gesenius thinks that God means by the question to deny that He had given "a bill of divorcement" to her, as was often done on slight pretexts by a husband (신24:1), or that He had "sold" His and her "children," as a poor parent sometimes did (출21:7; 왕하4:1; 느5:5) under pressure of his "creditors"; that it was they who sold themselves through their own sins. Maurer explains, "Show the bill of your mother's divorcement, whom … ; produce the creditors to whom ye have been sold; so it will be seen that it was not from any caprice of Mine, but through your own fault, your mother has been put away, and you sold" (사52:3). Horsley best explains (as the antithesis between "I" and "yourselves" shows, though Lowth translates, "Ye are sold") I have never given your mother a regular bill of divorcement; I have merely "put her away" for a time, and can, therefore, by right as her husband still take her back on her submission; I have not made you, the children, over to any "creditor" to satisfy a debt; I therefore still have the right of a father over you, and can take you back on repentance, though as rebellious children you have sold yourselves to sin and its penalty (왕상21:25).
bill … whom—rather, "the bill with which I have put her away" [Maurer].
【사50:1 CWC】[THE MESSIAH REVEALED]
The thirty-two chapters deal particularly with the Person and work of the Messiah. Isaiah has sometimes been called "the evangelical prophet" because of the large space he gives to that subject -- a circumstance the more notable because of the silence concerning it since Moses. The explanation of this silence is hinted at in the lesson on the introduction to the prophets.
In chapter 49, the Messiah speaks of Himself and the failure of His mission in His rejection by His nation (vv. 1-4). This rejection works blessing to the Gentiles (vv. 5, 6) compare Romans 11). Ultimately Israel shall be brought to Him and indeed the whole earth (see the remainder of the chapter). Zion, i. e., Israel, may doubt this (v. 14), but is made assured of it in what follows.
Chapter 50 is connected with the preceding verses 1-3 referring to Zion's restoration. But at verse 4 the Messiah bears witness to Himself again. His obedience, suffering and triumph down to the end of the chapter.
These verses furnish rich material for a Bible reading or expository discourse on "The Training of Jesus." (1). His Teacher: "The Lord God hath given me the tongue of the learned"; (2), the object of His teaching: "That I should know how to speak a word in season," &c.; (3), the method of its impartations: "He wakeneth morning by morning"; (4), the spirit of the pupil: "I was not rebellious," &c.; (5), the encouragement He receives: "The Lord God will help me"; (6), the counsel He offers to others: "Who is among you that feareth the Lord"? (7), the warning to the disobedient: "Behold all ye that kindle a fire."
In like manner 51 is linked to chapter 50, by the words of comfort to Zion which shall be brought to her through the Messiah's work on her behalf. Verses 9-11 are a prayer of faith of the faithful remnant which is answered in the remainder of that chapter and the following, down to and including verse 12.
Chapters 52:13-53:12 are a unit in their Messianic character. Christ's personal suffering and glorious triumph are depicted in the closing verses of chapter 52. His rejection by Israel in 53:1-6; His submission, deliverance and reward (vv. 7-12).
Chapter 54 exhibits the result of this in Israel's conversion, restoration and earthly glory in the millennium. Observe the divine oath that this shall be brought to pass (v. 9).
Chapter 55 is the offer of this salvation to Israel, and requires no comment.
Chapter 56 shows that when this offer is at last accepted and the salvation experienced by Israel, it will mean similar blessing to the whole earth (vv. 1-8).
The rest of this chapter, and nearly the whole of the following one, describe the sad condition of Israel at present, but especially at the end period under the Antichrist (57:9). The section concludes with the customary promises to the faithful (57:15-19).
【사50:1 MHCC】 The rejection of the Jews. (사50:1-3) The sufferings and exaltation of the Messiah. (사50:4-9) Consolation to the believer, and warning to the unbeliever.
사50:1-3 Those who have professed to be people of God, and seem to be dealt severely with, are apt to complain, as if God had been hard with them. Here is an answer for such murmurings; God never deprived any of their advantages, except for their sins. The Jews were sent into Babylon for their idolatry, a sin which broke the covenant; and they were at last rejected for crucifying the Lord of glory. God called on them to leave their sins, and prevent their own ruin. Last of all, the Son came to his own, but his own received him not. When God calls men to happiness, and they will not answer, they are justly left to be miserable. To silence doubts concerning his power, proofs of it are given. The wonders which attended his sufferings and death, proclaimed that he was the Son of God, 마27:54.
사50:4-9 As Jesus was God and man in one person, we find him sometimes speaking, or spoken of, as the Lord God; at other times, as man and the servant of Jehovah. He was to declare the truths which comfort the broken, contrite heart, those weary of sin, harassed with afflictions. And as the Holy Spirit was upon him, that he might speak as never man spake; so the same Divine influence daily wakened him to pray, to preach the gospel, and to receive and deliver the whole will of the Father. The Father justified the Son when he accepted the satisfaction he made for the sin of man. Christ speaks in the name of all believers. Who dares to be an enemy to those unto whom he is a Friend? or who will contend with those whom he is an Advocate? Thus St. Paul applies it, 롬8:33.
사50:10,11 A child of God is afraid of incurring his displeasure. This grace usually appears most in believers when in darkness, when other graces appear not. Those that truly fear God, obey the voice of Christ. A sincere servant of God may for a long time be without views of eternal happiness. What is likely to be an effectual cure in this sad case? Let him trust in the name of the Lord; and let him stay himself upon the promises of the covenant, and build his hopes on them. Let him trust in Christ, trust in that name of his, The Lord our Righteousness; stay himself upon God as his God, in and through a Mediator. Presuming sinners are warned not to trust in themselves. Their own merit and sufficiency are light and heat to them. Creature-comforts are as sparks, short-lived, and soon gone; yet the children of this world, while they last, seek to warm themselves by them, and walk with pride and pleasure in the light of them. Those that make the world their comfort, and their own righteousness their confidence, will certainly meet with bitterness in the end. A godly man's way may be dark, but his end shall be peace and everlasting light. A wicked man's way may be pleasant, but his end and abode for ever will be utter darkness.
【사50:2 JFB】2. I—Messiah.
no man—willing to believe in and obey Me (사52:1, 3). The same Divine Person had "come" by His prophets in the Old Testament (appealing to them, but in vain, 렘7:25, 26), who was about to come under the New Testament.
hand shortened—the Oriental emblem of weakness, as the long stretched-out hand is of power (사59:1). Notwithstanding your sins, I can still "redeem" you from your bondage and dispersion.
dry up … sea—(출14:21). The second exodus shall exceed, while it resembles in wonders, the first (사11:11, 15; 51:15).
make … rivers … wilderness—turn the prosperity of Israel's foes into adversity.
fish stinketh—the very judgment inflicted on their Egyptian enemies at the first exodus (출7:18, 21).
【사50:3 JFB】3. heavens … blackness—another of the judgments on Egypt to be repeated hereafter on the last enemy of God's people (출10:21).
sackcloth—(계6:12).
【사50:4 JFB】4. Messiah, as "the servant of Jehovah" (사42:1), declares that the office has been assigned to Him of encouraging the "weary" exiles of Israel by "words in season" suited to their case; and that, whatever suffering it is to cost Himself, He does not shrink from it (사50:5, 6), for that He knows His cause will triumph at last (사50:7, 8).
learned—not in mere human learning, but in divinely taught modes of instruction and eloquence (사49:2; 출4:11; 마7:28, 29; 13:54).
speak a word in season—(잠15:23; 25:11). Literally, "to succor by words," namely, in their season of need, the "weary" dispersed ones of Israel (신28:65-67). Also, the spiritual "weary" (사42:3; 마11:28).
wakeneth morning by morning, &c.—Compare "daily rising up early" (렘7:25; 막1:35). The image is drawn from a master wakening his pupils early for instruction.
wakeneth … ear—prepares me for receiving His divine instructions.
as the learned—as one taught by Him. He "learned obedience," experimentally, "by the things which He suffered"; thus gaining that practical learning which adapted Him for "speaking a word in season" to suffering men (히5:8).
【사50:5 JFB】5. opened … ear—(See on 사42:20; 사48:8); that is, hath made me obediently attentive (but Maurer, "hath informed me of my duty"), as a servant to his master (compare 시40:6-8, with 빌2:7; 사42:1; 49:3, 6; 52:13; 53:11; 마20:28; Lu 22:27).
not rebellious—but, on the contrary, most willing to do the Father's will in proclaiming and procuring salvation for man, at the cost of His own sufferings (히10:5-10).
【사50:6 JFB】6. smiters—with scourges and with the open hand (사52:14; 막14:65). Literally fulfilled (마27:26; 26:27; Lu 18:33). To "pluck the hair" is the highest insult that can be offered an Oriental (삼하10:4; 애3:30). "I gave" implies the voluntary nature of His sufferings; His example corresponds to His precept (마5:39).
spitting—To spit in another's presence is an insult in the East, much more on one; most of all in the face (욥30:10; 마27:30; Lu 18:32).
【사50:7 JFB】7. Sample of His not being "discouraged" (사42:4; 49:5).
set … face like … flint—set Myself resolutely, not to be daunted from My work of love by shame or suffering (겔3:8, 9).
【사50:8 JFB】8. The believer, by virtue of his oneness with Christ, uses the same language (시138:8; 롬8:32-34). But "justify" in His case, is God's judicial acceptance and vindication of Him on the ground of His own righteousness (Lu 23:44-47; 롬1:4; 딤전3:16, with which compare 벧전3:18); in their case, on the ground of His righteousness and meritorious death imputed to them (롬5:19).
stand together—in judgment, to try the issue.
adversary—literally, "master of my cause," that is, who has real ground of accusation against me, so that he can demand judgment to be given in his favor (compare Z전3:1, &c.
【사50:9 JFB】9. (Compare "deal," or "proper," 사52:13, Margin;사53:10; 시118:6; 렘23:5).
as a garment—(사51:6, 8; 시102:26). A leading constituent of wealth in the East is change of raiment, which is always liable to the inroads of the moth; hence the frequency of the image in Scripture.
【사50:10 JFB】10. Messiah exhorts the godly after His example (사49:4, 5; 42:4) when in circumstances of trial ("darkness," 사47:5), to trust in the arm of Jehovah alone.
Who is, &c.—that is, Whosoever (유7:3).
obeyeth … servant—namely, Messiah. The godly "honor the Son, even as they honor the Father" (요5:23).
darkness—(미7:8, 9). God never had a son who was not sometimes in the dark. For even Christ, His only Son, cried out, "My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?"
light—rather, "splendor"; bright sunshine; for the servant of God is never wholly without "light" [Vitringa]. A godly man's way may be dark, but his end shall be peace and light. A wicked man's way may be bright, but his end shall be utter darkness (시112:4; 97:11; 37:24).
let him trust in the name of the Lord—as Messiah did (사50:8, 9).
