■ 룻기 2장
1. 나오미의 남편 엘리멜렉의 친족 중 유력한 자가 있으니 이름은 보아스더라
And Naomi had a kinsman of her husband’s , a mighty man of wealth , of the family of Elimelech ; and his name was Boaz .
2. 모압 여인 룻이 나오미에게 이르되 나로 밭에 가게 하소서 내가 뉘게 은혜를 입으면 그를 따라서 이삭을 줍겠나이다 나오미가 그에게 이르되 내 딸아 갈지어다 하매
And Ruth the Moabitess said unto Naomi , Let me now go to the field , and glean ears of corn after him in whose sight I shall find grace . And she said unto her, Go , my daughter .
3. 룻이 가서 베는 자를 따라 밭에서 이삭을 줍는데 우연히 엘리멜렉의 친족 보아스에게 속한 밭에 이르렀더라
And she went , and came , and gleaned in the field after the reapers : and her hap was to light on a part of the field belonging unto Boaz , who was of the kindred of Elimelech .
4. 마침 보아스가 베들레헴에서부터 와서 베는 자들에게 이르되 여호와께서 너희가 함께 하시기를 원하노라 그들이 대답하되 여호와께서 당신에게 복 주시기를 원하나이다
And, behold, Boaz came from Beth–lehem , and said unto the reapers , The Lord be with you. And they answered him, The Lord bless thee.
5. 보아스가 베는 자들을 거느린 사환에게 이르되 이는 뉘 소녀냐
Then said Boaz unto his servant that was set over the reapers , Whose damsel is this?
6. 베는 자를 거느린 사환이 대답하여 가로되 이는 나오미와 함께 모압 지방에서 돌아온 모압 소녀인데
And the servant that was set over the reapers answered and said , It is the Moabitish damsel that came back with Naomi out of the country of Moab :
7. 그의 말이 나로 베는 자를 따라 단 사이에서 이삭을 줍게 하소서 하였고 아침부터 와서는 잠시 집에서 쉰 외에 지금까지 계속하는 중이니이다
And she said , I pray you, let me glean and gather after the reapers among the sheaves : so she came , and hath continued even from the morning until now, that she tarried a little in the house .
8. 보아스가 룻에게 이르되 내 딸아 들으라 이삭을 주우러 다른 밭으로 가지 말며 여기서 떠나지 말고 나의 소녀들과 함께 있으라
Then said Boaz unto Ruth , Hearest thou not, my daughter ? Go not to glean in another field , neither go from hence, but abide here fast by my maidens :
9. 그들의 베는 밭을 보고 그들을 따르라 내가 그 소년들에게 명하여 너를 건드리지 말라 하였느니라 목이 마르거든 그릇에 가서 소년들의 길어 온 것을 마실지니라
Let thine eyes be on the field that they do reap , and go thou after them: have I not charged the young men that they shall not touch thee? and when thou art athirst , go unto the vessels , and drink of that which the young men have drawn .
10. 룻이 땅에 엎드려 절하며 그에게 이르되 나는 이방 여인이어늘 당신이 어찌하여 내게 은혜를 베푸시며 나를 돌아보시나이까
Then she fell on her face , and bowed herself to the ground , and said unto him, Why have I found grace in thine eyes , that thou shouldest take knowledge of me, seeing I am a stranger ?
11. 보아스가 그에게 대답하여 가로되 네 남편이 죽은 후로 네가 시모에게 행한 모든 것과 네 부모와 고국을 떠나 전에 알지 못하던 백성에게로 온 일이 내게 분명히 들렸느니라
And Boaz answered and said unto her, It hath fully been shewed me, all that thou hast done unto thy mother in law since the death of thine husband : and how thou hast left thy father and thy mother , and the land of thy nativity , and art come unto a people which thou knewest not heretofore .
12. 여호와께서 네 행한 일을 보응하시기를 원하며 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와께서 그 날개 아래 보호를 받으러 온 네게 온전한 상 주시기를 원하노라
The Lord recompense thy work , and a full reward be given thee of the Lord God of Israel , under whose wings thou art come to trust .
13. 룻이 가로되 내 주여 내가 당신께 은혜 입기를 원하나이다 나는 당신의 시녀의 하나와 같지 못하오나 당신이 이 시녀를 위로하시고 마음을 기쁘게 하는 말씀을 하셨나이다
Then she said , Let me find favour in thy sight , my lord ; for that thou hast comforted me, and for that thou hast spoken friendly unto thine handmaid , though I be not like unto one of thine handmaidens .
14. 식사할 때에 보아스가 룻에게 이르되 이리로 와서 떡을 먹으며 네 떡 조각을 초에 찍으라 룻이 곡식 베는 자 곁에 앉으니 그가 볶은 곡식을 주매 룻이 배불리 먹고 남았더라
And Boaz said unto her, At mealtime come thou hither , and eat of the bread , and dip thy morsel in the vinegar . And she sat beside the reapers : and he reached her parched corn, and she did eat , and was sufficed , and left .
15. 롯이 이삭을 주우러 일어날 때에 보아스가 자기 소년들에게 명하여 가로되 그로 곡식 단 사이에서 줍게 하고 책망하지 말며
And when she was risen up to glean , Boaz commanded his young men , saying , Let her glean even among the sheaves , and reproach her not:
16. 또 그를 위하여 줌에서 조금씩 뽑아 버려서 그로 줍게 하고 꾸짖지 말라 하니라
And let fall also some of the handfuls of purpose for her, and leave them, that she may glean them, and rebuke her not.
17. 룻이 밭에서 저녁까지 줍고 그 주운 것을 떠니 보리가 한 에바쯤 되는지라
So she gleaned in the field until even , and beat out that she had gleaned : and it was about an ephah of barley .
18. 그것을 가지고 성읍에 들어가서 시모에게 그 주운 것을 보이고 그 배불리 먹고 남긴 것을 내어 시모에게 드리매
And she took it up , and went into the city : and her mother in law saw what she had gleaned : and she brought forth , and gave to her that she had reserved after she was sufficed .
19. 시모가 그에게 이르되 오늘 어디서 주웠느냐 어디서 일을 하였느냐 너를 돌아본 자에게 복이 있기를 원하노라 룻이 누구에게서 일한 것을 시모에게 알게 하여 가로되 오늘 일하게 한 사람의 이름은 보아스니이다
And her mother in law said unto her, Where hast thou gleaned to day ? and where wroughtest thou? blessed be he that did take knowledge of thee. And she shewed her mother in law with whom she had wrought , and said , The man’s name with whom I wrought to day is Boaz .
20. 나오미가 자부에게 이르되 여호와의 복이 그에게 있기를 원하노라 그가 생존한 자와 사망한 자에게 은혜 베풀기를 그치지 아니하도다 나오미가 또 그에게 이르되 그 사람은 우리의 근족이니 우리 기업을 무를 자 중 하나이니라
And Naomi said unto her daughter in law , Blessed be he of the Lord , who hath not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead . And Naomi said unto her, The man is near of kin unto us, one of our next kinsmen .
21. 모압 여인 룻이 가로되 그가 내게 또 이르기를 내 추수를 다 마치기까지 너는 내 소년들에게 가까이 있으라 하더이다
And Ruth the Moabitess said , He said unto me also, Thou shalt keep fast by my young men , until they have ended all my harvest .
22. 나오미가 자부 룻에게 이르되 내 딸아 너는 그 소녀들과 함께 나가고 다른 밭에서 사람을 만나지 아니하는 것이 좋으니라
And Naomi said unto Ruth her daughter in law , It is good , my daughter , that thou go out with his maidens , that they meet thee not in any other field .
23. 이에 룻이 보아스의 소녀들에게 가까이 있어서 보리 추수와 밀 추수를 마치기까지 이삭을 주우며 그 시모와 함께 거하니라
So she kept fast by the maidens of Boaz to glean unto the end of barley harvest and of wheat harvest ; and dwelt with her mother in law .

【룻2:1 JFB】룻2:1-3. Ruth Gleans in the Field of Boaz.

Chapter 1.
This beautiful story is an event occurring during the Judges (c. 1:1), but separated from the former to give prominence to the genealogical record with which it concludes (c. 4:18-22), showing Ruth an ancestress of David, and hence of Jesus Christ.
The story is so simply told as to render necessary but the briefest comments.
Elimelech and his family are called "Ephrathites of Bethlehem-judah" (c. 1:2) for the reason that Ephrath was originally the name of Bethlehem (창35:19; 48:7; 미5:2), and also because there was a Bethlehem in Zebulun as well as Judah (수19:15).
The marrying of Moabitish women by the sons of Elimelech was contrary to the Mosaic law (신7:3; 23:3), but such disobedience was common in those times, as we have seen.
Why Naomi should not have encouraged her daughters-in-law to return with her (v. 8) is explained by the thought that they would fare better in material things in their own land and among their own people. Her piety was not of the depth to make her feel that the spiritual benefits of Israel would offset these advantages.
The utterances of Naomi in verses 11-13 are explained by the ancient custom (창38:11), sanctioned by the law of Moses. (신25:5), requiring a younger son to marry the widow of a deceased brother.
Naomi seems not to have been a cheerful person (vv. 13, 20, 21), but were we in her circumstances perhaps we would not have felt differently. And then she may have had reason to believe her affliction a divine chastisement upon her household.
Chapter 2:1-17.
Verse 2 reminds us of 레19:9, 10, and 신24:19-21, giving the right to the poor and to strangers to glean after the reapers; but we are not to suppose that Ruth purposely selected the field of Boaz, or that she had knowledge at this time of her relationship to him.
Reaping was done by women (v. 8), but the gathering and threshing was the work of men. How beautifully Boaz' character shows in these verses! His greeting to the reapers, his interest in his relatives, his attention and generosity toward them, and his confidence in Jehovah. What poetry of faith in the expression, "The Lord God of Israel, under whose wings thou are come to trust!" (v. 12.)
Verses 18-23.
Naomi recognizes the relationship of Boaz, and the phrase, "one of our next kinsmen," might be rendered, "one of them that hath the right to redeem for us." (레25:25.) This "right to redeem" carried with it the duty to protect them, to purchase their tribal lands, and in this case to marry Ruth and maintain the family name. Naomi's advice to Ruth, therefore, can readily be understood and appreciated (v. 22).
【룻2:1 MHCC】Observe Ruth's humility. When Providence had made her poor, she cheerfully stoops to her lot. High spirits will rather starve than stoop; not so Ruth. Nay, it is her own proposal. She speaks humbly in her expectation of leave to glean. We may not demand kindness as a debt, but ask, and take it as a favour, though in a small matter. Ruth also was an example of industry. She loved not to eat the bread of idleness. This is an example to young people. Diligence promises well, both for this world and the other. We must not be shy of any honest employment. No labour is a reproach. Sin is a thing below us, but we must not think any thing else so, to which Providence call us. She was an example of regard to her mother, and of trust in Providence. God wisely orders what seem to us small events; and those that appear altogether uncertain, still are directed to serve his own glory, and the good of his people.
【룻2:2 JFB】2. Ruth … said unto Naomi, Let me now go to the field, and glean—The right of gleaning was conferred by a positive law on the widow, the poor, and the stranger (see on 레19:9 and 신24:19). But liberty to glean behind the reapers [룻2:3] was not a right that could be claimed; it was a privilege granted or refused according to the good will or favor of the owner.
【룻2:3 JFB】3. her hap was to light on a part of the field belonging unto Boaz—Fields in Palestine being unenclosed, the phrase signifies that portion of the open ground which lay within the landmarks of Boaz.
【룻2:4 JFB】룻2:4-23. He Takes Knowledge of Her, and Shows Her Favor.
4. Boaz came from Beth-lehem, and said unto the reapers, The Lord be with you—This pious salutation between the master and his laborers strongly indicates the state of religious feeling among the rural population of Israel at that time, as well as the artless, happy, and unsuspecting simplicity which characterized the manners of the people. The same patriarchal style of speaking is still preserved in the East.
【룻2:4 MHCC】The pious and kind language between Boaz and his reapers shows that there were godly persons in Israel. Such language as this is seldom heard in our field; too often, on the contrary, what is immoral and corrupt. A stranger would form a very different opinion of our land, from that which Ruth would form of Israel from the converse and conduct of Boaz and his reapers. But true religion will teach a man to behave aright in all states and conditions; it will form kind masters and faithful servants, and cause harmony in families. True religion will cause mutual love and kindness among persons of different ranks. It had these effects on Boaz and his men. When he came to them he prayed for them. They did not, as soon as he was out of hearing curse him, as some ill-natured servants that hate their master's eye, but they returned his courtesy. Things are likely to go on well where there is such good-will as this between masters and servants. They expressed their kindness to each other by praying one for another. Boaz inquired concerning the stranger he saw, and ordered her to be well treated. Masters must take care, not only that they do no hurt themselves, but that they suffer not their servants and those under them to do wrong. Ruth humbly owned herself unworthy of favours, seeing she was born and brought up a heathen. It well becomes us all to think humbly of ourselves, esteeming others better than ourselves. And let us, in the kindness of Boaz to Ruth, note the kindness of the Lord Jesus Christ to poor sinners.
【룻2:5 JFB】5. his servant that was set over the reapers—an overseer whose special duty was to superintend the operations in the field, to supply provision to the reapers, and pay them for their labor in the evening.
【룻2:7 JFB】7. she said … Let me glean and gather after the reapers among the sheaves—Various modes of reaping are practised in the East. Where the crop is thin and short, it is plucked up by the roots. Sometimes it is cut with the sickle. Whether reaped in the one way or the other, the grain is cast into sheaves loosely thrown together, to be subjected to the process of threshing, which takes place, for the most part, immediately after the reaping. Field labors were begun early in the morning—before the day became oppressively hot.
she tarried a little in the house—that is, the field tent, erected for the occasional rest and refreshment of the laborers.
【룻2:8 JFB】8, 9. said Boaz unto Ruth, … bide here fast by my maidens—The reaping was performed by women while the assortment of sheaves was the duty of men-servants. The same division of harvest labor obtains in Syria still. Boaz not only granted to Ruth the full privilege of gleaning after his reapers, but provided for her personal comfort.
【룻2:9 JFB】9. go unto the vessels, and drink of that which the young men have drawn—Gleaners were sometimes allowed, by kind and charitable masters, to partake of the refreshments provided for the reapers. The vessels alluded to were skin bottles, filled with water—and the bread was soaked in vinegar (룻2:14); a kind of poor, weak wine, sometimes mingled with a little olive oil—very cooling, as would be required in harvest-time. This grateful refection is still used in the harvest-field.
【룻2:14 JFB】14. he reached her parched corn, and she did eat, and was sufficed, and left—some of the new grain, roasted on the spot, and fit for use after being rubbed in the hands—a favorite viand in the East. He gave her so much, that after satisfying her own wants, she had some (룻2:18) in reserve for her mother-in-law.
【룻2:16 JFB】16. let fall also some of the handfuls of purpose for her—The gleaners in the East glean with much success; for a great quantity of corn is scattered in the reaping, as well as in their manner of carrying it. One may judge, then, of the large quantity which Ruth would gather in consequence of the liberal orders given to the servants. These extraordinary marks of favor were not only given from a kindly disposition, but from regard to her good character and devoted attachment to her venerable relative.

【룻2:17 MHCC】It encourages industry, that in all labour, even that of gleaning, there is profit. Ruth was pleased with what she gained by her own industry, and was careful to secure it. Let us thus take care that we lose not those things which we have wrought, which we have gained for our souls' good, 요이1:8. Parents should examine their children, as Naomi did, not to frighten or discourage them, so as to make them hate home, or tempt them to tell a lie; but to commend them if they have done well, and with mildness to reprove and caution them if they have done otherwise. It is a good question for us to ask ourselves every night, Where have I gleaned to-day? What improvement have I made in knowledge and grace? What have I done that will turn to a good account? When the Lord deals bountifully with us, let us not be found in any other field, nor seeking for happiness and satisfaction in the creature. We lose Divine favours, if we slight them. Ruth dutifully observed her mother's directions. And when the harvest was ended, she kept her aged mother company at home. Dinah went out to see the daughters of the land; her vanity ended in disgrace, Ge 34. Ruth kept at home, and helped to maintain her mother, and went out on no other errand than to get provision for her; her humility and industry ended in preferment.
【룻2:20 JFB】20. the man is … one of our next kinsmen—Hebrew, "one of our redeemers," on whom it devolves to protect us, to purchase our lands, and marry you, the widow of his next kinsman. She said, "one of them," not that there were many in the same close relationship, but that he was a very near kinsman, one other individual only having the precedence.

Naomi said unto Ruth … It is good … that thou go out with his maidens—a prudent recommendation to Ruth to accept the generous invitation of Boaz, lest, if she were seen straying into other fields, she might not only run the risk of rude treatment, but displease him by seeming indifferent to his kind liberality. Moreover, the observant mind of the old matron had already discerned, in all Boaz' attentions to Ruth, the germs of a stronger affection, which she wished to increase.
