1. 사사들의 치리하던 때에 그 땅에 흉년이 드니라 유다 베들레헴에 한 사람이 그 아내와 두 아들을 데리고 모압 지방에 가서 우거하였는데

  Now it came to pass in the days when the judges ruled , that there was a famine in the land . And a certain man of Beth–lehem–judah went to sojourn in the country of Moab , he, and his wife , and his two sons .

 

2. 그 사람의 이름은 엘리멜렉이요 그 아내의 이름은 나오미요 그 두 아들의 이름은 말론과 기룐이니 유다 베들레헴 에브랏 사람들이더라 그들이 모압 지방에 들어가서 거기 유하더니

  And the name of the man was Elimelech , and the name of his wife Naomi , and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion , Ephrathites of Beth–lehem–judah . And they came into the country of Moab , and continued there.

 

3. 나오미의 남편 엘리멜렉이 죽고 나오미와 그 두 아들이 남았으며

  And Elimelech Naomi’s husband died ; and she was left , and her two sons .

 

4. 그들은 모압 여자 중에서 아내를 취하였는데 하나의 이름은 오르바요 하나의 이름은 룻이더라 거기 거한지 십 년 즈음에

  And they took them wives of the women of Moab ; the name of the one was Orpah , and the name of the other Ruth : and they dwelled there about ten years .

 

5. 말론과 기룐 두 사람이 다 죽고 그 여인은 두 아들과 남편의 뒤에 남았더라

  And Mahlon and Chilion died also both of them; and the woman was left of her two sons and her husband .

 

6. 그가 모압 지방에 있어서 여호와께서 자기 백성을 권고하사 그들에게 양식을 주셨다 함을 들었으므로 이에 두 자부와 함께 일어나 모압 지방에서 돌아오려 하여

  Then she arose with her daughters in law , that she might return from the country of Moab : for she had heard in the country of Moab how that the Lord had visited his people in giving them bread .

 

7. 있던 곳을 떠나고 두 자부도 그와 함께하여 유다 땅으로 돌아오려고 길을 행하다가

  Wherefore she went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters in law with her; and they went on the way to return unto the land of Judah .

 

8. 나오미가 두 자부에게 이르되 너희는 각각 어미의 집으로 돌아가라 너희가 죽은 자와 나를 선대한 것 같이 여호와께서 너희를 선대하시기를 원하며

  And Naomi said unto her two daughters in law , Go , return each to her mother’s house : the Lord deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead , and with me.

 

9. 여호와께서 너희로 각각 남편의 집에서 평안함을 얻게 하시기를 원하노라 하고 그들에게 입맞추매 그들이 소리를 높여 울며

  The Lord grant you that ye may find rest , each of you in the house of her husband . Then she kissed them; and they lifted up their voice , and wept .

 

10. 나오미에게 이르되 아니니이다 우리는 어머니와 함께 어머니의 백성에게로 돌아가겠나이다

  And they said unto her, Surely we will return with thee unto thy people .

 

11. 나오미가 가로되 내 딸들아 돌아가라 너희가 어찌 나와 함께 가려느냐 나의 태중에 너희 남편될 아들들이 오히려 있느냐

  And Naomi said , Turn again , my daughters : why will ye go with me? are there yet any more sons in my womb , that they may be your husbands ?

 

12. 내 딸들아 돌이켜 너희 길로 가라 나는 늙었으니 남편을 두지 못할지라 가령 내가 소망이 있다고 말한다든지 오늘 밤에 남편을 두어서 아들들을 생산한다 하자

  Turn again , my daughters , go your way; for I am too old to have an husband . If I should say , I have hope , if I should have an husband also to night , and should also bear sons ;

 

13. 너희가 어찌 그것을 인하여 그들의 자라기를 기다리겠느냐 어찌 그것을 인하여 남편두기를 멈추겠느냐 내 딸들아 그렇지 아니하니라 여호와의 손이 나를 치셨으므로 나는 너희로 인하여 더욱 마음이 아프도다

  Would ye tarry for them till they were grown ? would ye stay for them from having husbands ? nay, my daughters ; for it grieveth me much for your sakes that the hand of the Lord is gone out against me.

 

14. 그들이 소리를 높여 다시 울더니 오르바는 그 시모에게 입맞추되 룻은 그를 붙좇았더라

  And they lifted up their voice , and wept again : and Orpah kissed her mother in law ; but Ruth clave unto her.

 

15. 나오미가 또 가로되 보라 네 동서는 그 백성과 그 신에게로 돌아가나니 너도 동서를 따라 돌아가라

  And she said , Behold, thy sister in law is gone back unto her people , and unto her gods : return thou after thy sister in law .

 

16. 룻이 가로되 나로 어머니를 떠나며 어머니를 따르지 말고 돌아가라 강권하지 마옵소서 어머니께서 가시는 곳에 나도 가고 어머니께서 유숙하시는 곳에서 나도 유숙하겠나이다 어머니의 백성이 나의 백성이 되고 어머니의 하나님이 나의 하나님이 되시리니

  And Ruth said , Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest , I will go ; and where thou lodgest , I will lodge : thy people shall be my people , and thy God my God :

 

17. 어머니께서 죽으시는 곳에서 나도 죽어 거기 장사될 것이라 만일 내가 죽는 일 외에 어머니와 떠나면 여호와께서 내게 벌을 내리시고 더 내리시기를 원하나이다

  Where thou diest , will I die , and there will I be buried : the Lord do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.

 

18. 나오미가 룻의 자기와 함께 가기로 굳게 결심함을 보고 그에게 말하기를 그치니라

  When she saw that she was stedfastly minded to go with her, then she left speaking unto her.

 

19. 이에 그 두 사람이 행하여 베들레헴까지 이르니라 베들레헴에 이를 때에 온 성읍이 그들을 인하여 떠들며 이르기를 이가 나오미냐 하는지라

  So they two went until they came to Beth–lehem . And it came to pass, when they were come to Beth–lehem , that all the city was moved about them, and they said , Is this Naomi ?

 

20. 나오미가 그들에게 이르되 나를 나오미라 칭하지 말고 마라라 칭하라 이는 전능자가 나를 심히 괴롭게 하셨음이니라

  And she said unto them, Call me not Naomi , call me Mara : for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me.

 

21. 내가 풍족하게 나갔더니 여호와께서 나로 비어 돌아오게 하셨느니라 여호와께서 나를 징벌하셨고 전능자가 나를 괴롭게 하셨거늘 너희가 어찌 나를 나오미라 칭하느뇨 하니라

  I went out full , and the Lord hath brought me home again empty : why then call ye me Naomi , seeing the Lord hath testified against me, and the Almighty hath afflicted me?

 

22. 나오미가 모압 지방에서 그 자부 모압 여인 룻과 함께 돌아왔는데 그들이 보리 추수 시작할 때에 베들레헴에 이르렀더라

  So Naomi returned , and Ruth the Moabitess , her daughter in law , with her, which returned out of the country of Moab : and they came to Beth–lehem in the beginning of barley harvest .

【룻1:1 JFB】룻1:1-5. Elimelech, Driven by Famine into Moab, Dies There.
1. in the days when the judges ruled—The beautiful and interesting story which this book relates belongs to the early times of the judges. The precise date cannot be ascertained.

 

【룻1:1 CWC】[BACK TO THE HOMELAND]
Chapter 1.
This beautiful story is an event occurring during the Judges (c. 1:1), but separated from the former to give prominence to the genealogical record with which it concludes (c. 4:18-22), showing Ruth an ancestress of David, and hence of Jesus Christ.
The story is so simply told as to render necessary but the briefest comments.
Elimelech and his family are called "Ephrathites of Bethlehem-judah" (c. 1:2) for the reason that Ephrath was originally the name of Bethlehem (창35:19; 48:7; 미5:2), and also because there was a Bethlehem in Zebulun as well as Judah (수19:15).
The marrying of Moabitish women by the sons of Elimelech was contrary to the Mosaic law (신7:3; 23:3), but such disobedience was common in those times, as we have seen.
Why Naomi should not have encouraged her daughters-in-law to return with her (v. 8) is explained by the thought that they would fare better in material things in their own land and among their own people. Her piety was not of the depth to make her feel that the spiritual benefits of Israel would offset these advantages.
The utterances of Naomi in verses 11-13 are explained by the ancient custom (창38:11), sanctioned by the law of Moses. (신25:5), requiring a younger son to marry the widow of a deceased brother.
Naomi seems not to have been a cheerful person (vv. 13, 20, 21), but were we in her circumstances perhaps we would not have felt differently. And then she may have had reason to believe her affliction a divine chastisement upon her household.
Chapter 2:1-17.
Verse 2 reminds us of 레19:9, 10, and 신24:19-21, giving the right to the poor and to strangers to glean after the reapers; but we are not to suppose that Ruth purposely selected the field of Boaz, or that she had knowledge at this time of her relationship to him.
Reaping was done by women (v. 8), but the gathering and threshing was the work of men. How beautifully Boaz' character shows in these verses! His greeting to the reapers, his interest in his relatives, his attention and generosity toward them, and his confidence in Jehovah. What poetry of faith in the expression, "The Lord God of Israel, under whose wings thou are come to trust!" (v. 12.)
Verses 18-23.
Naomi recognizes the relationship of Boaz, and the phrase, "one of our next kinsmen," might be rendered, "one of them that hath the right to redeem for us." (레25:25.) This "right to redeem" carried with it the duty to protect them, to purchase their tribal lands, and in this case to marry Ruth and maintain the family name. Naomi's advice to Ruth, therefore, can readily be understood and appreciated (v. 22).

 

【룻1:1 MHCC】Elimelech's care to provide for his family, was not to be blamed; but his removal into the country of Moab could not be justified. And the removal ended in the wasting of his family. It is folly to think of escaping that cross, which, being laid in our way, we ought to take up. Changing our place seldom is mending it. Those who bring young people into bad acquaintance, and take them out of the way of public ordinances, thought they may think them well-principled, and armed against temptation, know not what will be the end. It does not appear that the women the sons of Elimelech married, were proselyted to the Jewish religion. Earthly trials or enjoyments are of short continuance. Death continually removes those of every age and situation, and mars all our outward comforts: we cannot too strongly prefer those advantages which shall last for ever.

 

【룻1:2 JFB】2. Elimelech—signifies "My God is king."
Naomi—"fair or pleasant"; and their two sons, Mahlon and Chilion, are supposed to be the same as Joash and Saraph (대상4:22).
Ephrathites—The ancient name of Beth-lehem was Ephrath (창35:19; 48:7), which was continued after the occupation of the land by the Hebrews, even down to the time of the prophet Micah (미5:2).
Beth-lehem-judah—so called to distinguish it from a town of the same name in Zebulun. The family, compelled to emigrate to Moab through pressure of a famine, settled for several years in that country. After the death of their father, the two sons married Moabite women. This was a violation of the Mosaic law (신7:3; 23:3; 스9:2; 느13:23); and Jewish writers say that the early deaths of both the young men were divine judgments inflicted on them for those unlawful connections.

 

【룻1:6 JFB】룻1:6-18. Naomi Returning Home, Ruth Accompanies Her.
6, 7. Then she arose with her daughters-in-law, that she might return from the country of Moab—The aged widow, longing to enjoy the privileges of Israel, resolved to return to her native land as soon as she was assured that the famine had ceased, and made the necessary arrangements with her daughters-in-law.

 

【룻1:6 MHCC】Naomi began to think of returning, after the death of her two sons. When death comes into a family, it ought to reform what is amiss there. Earth is made bitter to us, that heaven may be made dear. Naomi seems to have been a person of faith and piety. She dismissed her daughters-in-law with prayer. It is very proper for friends, when they part, to part with them thus part in love. Did Naomi do well, to discourage her daughters from going with her, when she might save them from the idolatry of Moab, and bring them to the faith and worship of the God of Israel? Naomi, no doubt, desired to do that; but if they went with her, she would not have them to go upon her account. Those that take upon them a profession of religion only to oblige their friends, or for the sake of company, will be converts of small value. If they did come with her, she would have them make it their deliberate choice, and sit down first and count the cost, as it concerns those to do who make a profession of religion. And more desire “rest in the house of a husband,” or some wordly settlement or earthly satisfaction, than the rest to which Christ invites our souls; therefore when tried they will depart from Christ, though perhaps with some sorrow.

 

【룻1:8 JFB】8. Naomi said unto her two daughters-in-law, Go, return each to her mother's house—In Eastern countries women occupy apartments separate from those of men, and daughters are most frequently in those of their mother.
the Lord deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead—that is, with my sons, your husbands, while they lived.

 

【룻1:9 JFB】9. The Lord grant you that ye may find rest—enjoy a life of tranquillity, undisturbed by the cares, incumbrances, and vexatious troubles to which a state of widowhood is peculiarly exposed.
Then she kissed them—the Oriental manner when friends are parting.

 

【룻1:11 JFB】11. are there yet any more sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?—This alludes to the ancient custom (창38:26) afterwards expressly sanctioned by the law of Moses (신25:5), which required a younger son to marry the widow of his deceased brother.

 

【룻1:12 JFB】12, 13. Turn again, my daughters, go your way—That Naomi should dissuade her daughters-in-law so strongly from accompanying her to the land of Israel may appear strange. But it was the wisest and most prudent course for her to adopt: first, because they might be influenced by hopes which could not be realized; second, because they might be led, under temporary excitement, to take a step they might afterwards regret; and, third, because the sincerity and strength of their conversion to the true religion, which she had taught them, would be thoroughly tested.

 

【룻1:13 JFB】13. the hand of the Lord is gone out against me—that is, I am not only not in a condition to provide you with other husbands, but so reduced in circumstances that I cannot think of your being subjected to privations with me. The arguments of Naomi prevailed with Orpah, who returned to her people and her gods. But Ruth clave unto her; and even in the pages of Sterne, that great master of pathos, there is nothing which so calls forth the sensibilities of the reader as the simple effusion he has borrowed from Scripture—of Ruth to her mother-in-law [Chalmers].

 

【룻1:15 MHCC】See Ruth's resolution, and her good affection to Naomi. Orpah was loth to part from her; yet she did not love her well enough to leave Moab for her sake. Thus, many have a value and affection for Christ, yet come short of salvation by him, because they will not forsake other things for him. They love him, yet leave him, because they do not love him enough, but love other things better. Ruth is an example of the grace of God, inclining the soul to choose the better part. Naomi could desire no more than the solemn declaration Ruth made. See the power of resolution; it silences temptation. Those that go in religious ways without a stedfast mind, stand like a door half open, which invites a thief; but resolution shuts and bolts the door, resists the devil and forces him to flee.

 

【룻1:19 JFB】룻1:19-22. They Come to Beth-lehem.
19-22. all the city was moved about them—The present condition of Naomi, a forlorn and desolate widow, presented so painful a contrast to the flourishing state of prosperity and domestic bliss in which she had been at her departure.

 

【룻1:19 MHCC】Naomi and Ruth came to Bethlehem. Afflictions will make great and surprising changes in a little time. May God, by his grace, fit us for all such changes, especially the great change!, Naomi signifies “pleasant,” or “amiable;” Mara, “bitter,” or “bitterness.” She was now a woman of a sorrowful spirit. She had come home empty, poor, a widow and childless. But there is a fulness for believers of which they never can be emptied; a good part which shall not be taken from those who have it. The cup of affliction is a “bitter” cup, but she owns that the affliction came from God. It well becomes us to have our hearts humbled under humbling providences. It is not affliction itself, but affliction rightly borne, that does us good.
