■ 예레미야 5장
1. 너희는 예루살렘 거리로 빨리 왕래하며 그 넓은 거리에서 찾아보고 알라 너희가 만일 공의를 행하며 진리를 구하는 자를 한 사람이라도 찾으면 내가 이 성을 사하리라
Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem , and see now, and know , and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man , if there be any that executeth judgment , that seeketh the truth ; and I will pardon it.
2. 그들이 여호와의 사심으로 맹세할지라도 실상은 거짓 맹세니라
And though they say , The Lord liveth ; surely they swear falsely .
3. 여호와여 주의 눈이 성실을 돌아보지 아니하시나이까 주께서 그들을 치셨을지라도 그들이 아픈 줄을 알지 못하며 그들을 거의 멸하셨을지라도 그들이 징계를 받지 아니하고 그 얼굴을 반석보다 굳게 하여 돌아오기를 싫어하므로
O Lord , are not thine eyes upon the truth ? thou hast stricken them, but they have not grieved ; thou hast consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction : they have made their faces harder than a rock ; they have refused to return .
4. 내가 말하기를 이 무리는 비천하고 우준한 것뿐이라 여호와의 길, 자기 하나님의 법을 알지 못하니
Therefore I said , Surely these are poor ; they are foolish : for they know not the way of the Lord , nor the judgment of their God .
5. 내가 귀인들에게 가서 그들에게 말하리라 그들은 여호와의 길, 자기 하나님의 법을 안다 하였더니 그들도 일제히 그 멍에를 꺾고 결박을 끊은지라
I will get me unto the great men , and will speak unto them; for they have known the way of the Lord , and the judgment of their God : but these have altogether broken the yoke , and burst the bonds .
6. 그러므로 수풀에서 나오는 사자가 그들을 죽이며 사막의 이리가 그들을 멸하며 표범이 성읍들을 엿보온즉 그리로 나오는 자마다 찢기오리니 이는 그들의 허물이 많고 패역이 심함이니이다
Wherefore a lion out of the forest shall slay them, and a wolf of the evenings shall spoil them, a leopard shall watch over their cities : every one that goeth out thence shall be torn in pieces : because their transgressions are many , and their backslidings are increased .
7. 내가 어찌 너를 사하겠느냐 네 자녀가 나를 버리고 신이 아닌 것들로 맹세하였으며 내가 그들을 배불리 먹인즉 그들이 행음하며 창기의 집에 허다히 모이며
How shall I pardon thee for this ? thy children have forsaken me, and sworn by them that are no gods : when I had fed them to the full , they then committed adultery , and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots’ houses .

They were as fed horses in the morning : every one neighed after his neighbour’s wife .
9. 나 여호와가 이르노라 내가 어찌 이 일들을 인하여 벌하지 아니하겠으며 내 마음이 이런 나라에 보수하지 않겠느냐
Shall I not visit for these things? saith the Lord : and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?
10. 너희는 그 성벽에 올라가 훼파하되 다 훼파하지 말고 그 가지만 꺾어버리라 여호와의 것이 아님이니라
Go ye up upon her walls , and destroy ; but make not a full end : take away her battlements ; for they are not the Lord’s .
11. 나 여호와가 말하노라 이스라엘 족속과 유다 족속이 내게 심히 패역하였느니라
For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me, saith the Lord .
12. 그들이 여호와를 인정치 아니하며 말하기를 여호와는 계신 것이 아닌즉 재앙이 우리에게 임하지 않을 것이요 우리가 칼과 기근을 보지 아니할 것이며
They have belied the Lord , and said , It is not he; neither shall evil come upon us; neither shall we see sword nor famine :
13. 선지자들은 바람이라 말씀이 그들의 속에 있지 아니한즉 그같이 그들이 당하리라 하느니라
And the prophets shall become wind , and the word is not in them: thus shall it be done unto them.
14. 그러므로 만군의 하나님 여호와가 이같이 말하노라 그들이 이 말을 하였은즉 볼지어다 내가 네 입에 있는 나의 말로 불이 되게 하고 이 백성으로 나무가 되게 하리니 그 불이 그들을 사르리라
Wherefore thus saith the Lord God of hosts , Because ye speak this word , behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire , and this people wood , and it shall devour them.
15. 나 여호와가 말하노라 이스라엘 족속아 보라 내가 한 나라를 원방에서 너희에게로 오게 하리니 곧 강하고 오랜 나라이라 그 방언을 네가 알지 못하며 그 말을 네가 깨닫지 못하느니라
Lo, I will bring a nation upon you from far , O house of Israel , saith the Lord : it is a mighty nation , it is an ancient nation , a nation whose language thou knowest not, neither understandest what they say .
16. 그 전통은 열린 묘실이요 그 사람들은 다 용사라
Their quiver is as an open sepulchre , they are all mighty men .
17. 그들이 네 자녀들의 먹을 추수 곡물과 양식을 먹으며 네 양떼와 소떼를 먹으며 네 포도나무와 무화과나무 열매를 먹으며 네가 의뢰하는 견고한 성들을 칼로 파멸하리라
And they shall eat up thine harvest , and thy bread , which thy sons and thy daughters should eat : they shall eat up thy flocks and thine herds : they shall eat up thy vines and thy fig trees : they shall impoverish thy fenced cities , wherein thou trustedst , with the sword .
18. 나 여호와가 말하노라 그 때에도 내가 너희를 진멸치는 아니하리라
Nevertheless in those days , saith the Lord , I will not make a full end with you.
19. 그들이 만일 이르기를 우리 하나님 여호와께서 어찌하여 이 모든 일을 우리에게 행하셨느뇨 하거든 너는 그들에게 이르기를 너희가 여호와를 버리고 너희 땅에서 이방 신들을 섬겼은즉 이와 같이 너희 것이 아닌 땅에서 이방인들을 섬기리라 하라
And it shall come to pass, when ye shall say , Wherefore doeth the Lord our God all these things unto us? then shalt thou answer them, Like as ye have forsaken me, and served strange gods in your land , so shall ye serve strangers in a land that is not yours.

Declare this in the house of Jacob , and publish it in Judah , saying ,
21. 우준하여 지각이 없으며 눈이 있어도 보지 못하며 귀가 있어도 듣지 못하는 백성이여 이를 들을지어다
Hear now this, O foolish people , and without understanding ; which have eyes , and see not; which have ears , and hear not:
22. 여호와께서 말씀하시되 너희가 나를 두려워 아니하느냐 내 앞에서 떨지 아니하겠느냐 내가 모래를 두어 바다의 계한을 삼되 그것으로 영원한 계한을 삼고 지나치지 못하게 하였으므로 파도가 흉용하나 그것을 이기지 못하며 뛰노나 그것을 넘지 못하느니라
Fear ye not me? saith the Lord : will ye not tremble at my presence , which have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree , that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail ; though they roar , yet can they not pass over it?
23. 그러나 너희 백성은 배반하며 패역하는 마음이 있어서 이미 배반하고 갔으며
But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart ; they are revolted and gone .
24. 또 너희 마음으로 우리에게 이른 비와 늦은 비를 때를 따라 주시며 우리를 위하여 추수 기한을 정하시는 우리 하나님 여호와를 경외하자 말하지도 아니하니
Neither say they in their heart , Let us now fear the Lord our God , that giveth rain , both the former and the latter , in his season : he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest .
25. 너희 허물이 이러한 일들을 물리쳤고 너희 죄가 너희에게 오는 좋은 것을 막았느니라
Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden good things from you.
26. 내 백성 너희 중에 악인이 있어서 새 사냥꾼의 매복함 같이 지키며 덫을 놓아 사람을 잡으며
For among my people are found wicked men: they lay wait , as he that setteth snares ; they set a trap , they catch men .
27. 조롱에 새들이 가득함 같이 너희 집들에 속임이 가득하도다 그러므로 너희가 창대하고 거부가 되어
As a cage is full of birds , so are their houses full of deceit : therefore they are become great , and waxen rich .
28. 살찌고 윤택하며 또 행위가 심히 악하여 자기 이익을 얻으려고 송사 곧 고아의 송사를 공정히 하지 아니하며 빈민의 송사를 공평히 판결치 아니하니
They are waxen fat , they shine : yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked : they judge not the cause , the cause of the fatherless , yet they prosper ; and the right of the needy do they not judge .
29. 내가 이 일들을 인하여 벌하지 아니하겠으며 내 마음이 이같은 나라에 보수하지 않겠느냐 여호와의 말이니라
Shall I not visit for these things? saith the Lord : shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?
30. 이 땅에 기괴하고 놀라운 일이 있도다
A wonderful and horrible thing is committed in the land ;
31. 선지자들은 거짓을 예언하며 제사장들은 자기 권력으로 다스리며 내 백성은 그것을 좋게 여기니 그 결국에는 너희가 어찌 하려느냐
The prophets prophesy falsely , and the priests bear rule by their means ; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?

【렘5:1 JFB】렘5:1-31. The Cause of the Judgments to Be Inflicted Is the Universal Corruption of the People.
1. a man—As the pious Josiah, Baruch, and Zephaniah lived in Jerusalem at that time, Jeremiah must here mean the mass of the people, the king, his counsellors, the false prophets, and the priests, as distinguished from the faithful few, whom God had openly separated from the reprobate people; among the latter not even one just person was to be found (사9:16) [Calvin]; the godly, moreover, were forbidden to intercede for them (렘7:16; compare 창18:23, &c.; 시12:1; 겔22:30).
see … know—look … ascertain.
judgment—justice, righteousness.
pardon it—rather, her.
【렘5:1 CWC】[PERSECUTED IN HIS HOME TOWN]
The length of this lesson may alarm, but preparation for it only requires the reading of the chapters two or three times. One who has gone through Isaiah will soon catch the drift of the Spirit's teaching and be able to break up the chapters into separate discourses and the discourses into their various themes. The main object of the lesson is to dwell on the prophet's personal experience in his home town which is reached in the closing chapters.
It is thought that the discourses in this section were delivered prior to the finding of the law-book in 2 Kings, which explains their more moderate tone as compared with the later ones, but this is a feature not relevant to this work.
Note in chapter 2 the divine expostulation (vv. 1-13); the reminder of the divine goodness (vv. 14-22); the vain excuses made by the nation (vv. 23-28); and the lamentation of the Lord over its condition (v. 29-3:5).
In chapter 3, beginning afresh at verse 6, we have God's complaint against Judah for learning nothing from "her treacherous sister," i. e., from Israel's experience (vv. 6-11); this is followed by a plea to that same Israel (now scattered through the north country by Assyria), to return if she would, and mercy would be shown her. In this connection the promise for the future is set before her (vv. 12-17); Judah and Israel will be re-united then, and so on to chapter 4:1-2.
Chapter 4 and the following, indicate that a mere outward reformation is not sufficient to bring divine blessing. Judgment is coming from the north! "A lion out of his thicket!" "A stormwind!" The prophet laments.
In chapter 7 there is a call to repentance and a spiritual religion. In chapters 8 and 9 coming judgment is again announced.
The Treachery of Friends.
Coming to chapter 11:18, we see the beginnings of the persecution that farther on became so bitter against the prophet as to make him a striking type of the suffering Saviour. It takes its rise among his neighbors and kinfolk in Anathoth. At first he is unsuspicious, but God reveals the plot to him. They would kill him, destroying the tree to be rid of the fruit. He appeals to God, whose answer is in the closing verses of the chapter. Anathoth was to suffer, but not immediately.
In chapter 12 the prophet expresses his surprise at this in the spirit of Job, and that of Psalms 37 and 73. The divine comfort he receives is to be told that worse things will follow. His friend Josiah is now on the throne, but wait till he is gone and Jehoiakim and Zedekiah reign! Tie is now like a man running a race with men, but then it will be like running a race with horses! He is dwelling in a land of comparative peace now, but then he will be in "the swellings of Jordan."
To understand this keep the politics of the period in mind. Judah is turning to Egypt for help against Babylon, the Gentile nation now in great power. But the divine purpose is that she shall submit herself to the yoke of Babylon. The prophet is proclaiming this against a strong party in the nation that will not have it so. They consider him a pessimist, a traitor to his country who must be silenced. And silenced he would have been if it were not for God.

렘5:1-9 None could be found who behaved as upright and godly men. But the Lord saw the true character of the people through all their disguises. The poor were ignorant, and therefore they were wicked. What can be expected but works of darkness, from people that know nothing of God and religion? There are God's poor, who, notwithstanding poverty, know the way of the Lord, walk in it, and do their duty; but these were willingly ignorant, and their ignorance would not be their excuse. The rich were insolent and haughty, and the abuse of God's favours made their sin worse.
렘5:10-18 Multitudes are ruined by believing that God will not be so strict as his word says he will; by this artifice Satan undid mankind. Sinners are not willing to own any thing to be God's word, that tends to part them from, or to disquiet them in, their sins. Mocking and misusing the Lord's messengers, filled the measure of their iniquity. God can bring trouble upon us from places and causes very remote. He has mercy in store for his people, therefore will set bounds to this desolating judgment. Let us not overlook the 'nevertheless,' 렘5:18. This is the Lord's covenant with Israel. He thereby proclaims his holiness, and his utter displeasure against sin while sparing the sinner, 시89:30-35.
렘5:19-31 Unhumbled hearts are ready to charge God with being unjust in their afflictions. But they may read their sin in their punishment. If men will inquire wherefore the Lord doeth hard things unto them, let them think of their sins. The restless waves obeyed the Divine decree, that they should not pass the sandy shores, which were as much a restraint as lofty mountains; but they burst all restraints of God's law, and were wholly gone into wickedness. Neither did they consider their interest. While the Lord, year after year, reserves to us the appointed weeks of harvest, men live on his bounty; yet they transgress against him. Sin deprives us of God's blessings; it makes the heaven as brass, and the earth as iron. Certainly the things of this world are not the best things; and we are not to think, that, because evil men prosper, God allows their practices. Though sentence against evil works is not executed speedily, it will be executed. Shall I not visit for these things? This speaks the certainty and the necessity of God's judgments. Let those who walk in bad ways consider that an end will come, and there will be bitterness in the latter end.

swear falsely—not a judicial oath; but their profession of the worship of Jehovah is insincere (렘5:7; 렘4:2). The reformation under Josiah was merely superficial in the case of the majority.
【렘5:3 JFB】3. eyes upon the truth—(신32:4; 대하16:9). "Truth" is in contrast with "swear falsely" (렘5:2). The false-professing Jews could expect nothing but judgments from the God of truth.
stricken … not grieved—(렘2:30; 사1:5; 9:13).

【렘5:4 JFB】4. poor—rather, "the poor." He supposes for the moment that this utter depravity is confined to the uninstructed poor, and that he would find a different state of things in the higher ranks: but there he finds unbridled profligacy.

but these—I found the very reverse to be the case.
burst … bonds—set God's law at defiance (시2:3).
【렘5:6 JFB】6. lion … wolf … leopard—the strongest, the most ravenous, and the swiftest, respectively, of beasts: illustrating the formidable character of the Babylonians.
of the evenings—Others not so well translate, of the deserts. The plural means that it goes forth every evening to seek its prey (시104:20; 합1:8; 습3:3).
leopard … watch … cities—(호13:7). It shall lie in wait about their cities.
【렘5:7 JFB】7. It would not be consistent with God's holiness to let such wickedness pass unpunished.
sworn by—(렘5:2; 렘4:2); that is, worshipped.
no gods—(신32:21).
fed … to the full—so the Keri (Hebrew Margin) reads. God's bountifulness is contrasted with their apostasy (신32:15). Prosperity, the gift of God, designed to lead men to Him, often produces the opposite effect. The Hebrew Chetib (text) reads: "I bound them (to Me) by oath," namely, in the marriage covenant, sealed at Sinai between God and Israel; in contrast to which stands their "adultery"; the antithesis favors this.
adultery … harlots' houses—spiritually: idolatry in temples of idols; but literal prostitution is also included, being frequently part of idol-worship: for example, in the worship of the Babylonian Mylitta.
【렘5:8 JFB】8. in the morning—(사5:11). "Rising early in the morning" is a phrase for unceasing eagerness in any pursuit; such was the Jews' avidity after idol-worship. Maurer translates from a different Hebrew root, "continually wander to and fro," inflamed with lust (렘2:23). But English Version is simpler (compare 렘13:27; 겔22:11).

It is not he—rather, "(Jehovah) is not He," that is, the true and only God (렘14:22; 신32:39; 사43:10, 13). By their idolatry they virtually denied Him. Or, referring to what follows, and to 렘5:9, "(Jehovah) is not," namely, about to be the punisher of our sins (렘14:13; 사28:15).

fire … wood—Thy denunciations of judgments shall be fulfilled and shall consume them as fire does wood. In 렘23:29 it is the penetrating energy of fire which is the point of comparison.

Israel—that is, Judah.
mighty—from an Arabic root, "enduring." The fourfold repetition of "nation" heightens the force.
ancient—The Chaldeans came originally from the Carduchian and Armenian mountains north of Mesopotamia, whence they immigrated into Babylonia; like all mountaineers, they were brave and hardy (see on 사23:13).
language … knowest not—사36:11 shows that Aramaic was not understood by the "multitude," but only by the educated classes [Maurer]. Henderson refers it to the original language of the Babylonians, which, he thinks, they brought with them from their native hills, akin to the Persic, not to the Aramaic, or any other Semitic tongue, the parent of the modern Kurd.

【렘5:24 JFB】24. rain … former … latter—The "former" falls from the middle of October to the beginning of December. The "latter," or spring rain in Palestine, falls before harvest in March and April, and is essential for ripening the crops (신11:14; Joe 2:23).
weeks of … harvest—the seven weeks between passover and pentecost, beginning on the sixteenth of Nisan (신16:9). By God's special providence no rain fell in Palestine during the harvest weeks, so that harvest work went on without interruption (see 창8:22).
