■ 예레미야 40장
1. 시위대장 느부사라단이 예루살렘과 유다 포로를 바벨론으로 옮기는 중에 예레미야도 잡혀 사슬로 결박되어 가다가 라마에서 해방된 후에 말씀이 여호와께로서 예레미야에게 임하니라
The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord , after that Nebuzar–adan the captain of the guard had let him go from Ramah , when he had taken him being bound in chains among all that were carried away captive of Jerusalem and Judah , which were carried away captive unto Babylon .
2. 시위대장이 예레미야를 불러다가 이르되 네 하나님 여호와께서 이곳에 재앙을 선포하시더니
And the captain of the guard took Jeremiah , and said unto him, The Lord thy God hath pronounced this evil upon this place .
3. 여호와께서 그 말씀하신 대로 행하셨으니 이는 너희가 여호와께 범죄하고 그 목소리를 청종치 아니하였으므로 이 일이 너희에게 임한 것이니라
Now the Lord hath brought it, and done according as he hath said : because ye have sinned against the Lord , and have not obeyed his voice , therefore this thing is come upon you.
4. 보라 내가 오늘 네 손의 사슬을 풀어 너를 해방하노니 만일 네가 나와 함께 바벨론으로 가는 것을 선히 여기거든 오라 내가 너를 선대하리라 만일 나와 함께 바벨론으로 가는 것을 좋지 않게 여기거든 그만 두라 보라 온 땅이 네 앞에 있나니 네가 선히 여기는 대로 가하게 여기는 곳으로 갈지니라
And now, behold, I loose thee this day from the chains which were upon thine hand . If it seem good unto thee to come with me into Babylon , come ; and I will look well unto thee: but if it seem ill unto thee to come with me into Babylon , forbear : behold , all the land is before thee: whither it seemeth good and convenient for thee to go , thither go .
5. 예레미야가 아직 돌이키기 전에 그가 다시 이르되 너는 바벨론 왕이 유다 성읍들의 총독으로 세우신 사반의 손자 아히감의 아들 그다랴에게로 돌아가서 그와 함께 백성 중에 거하거나 너의 가하게 여기는 곳으로 가거나 할지니라 하고 그 시위대장이 그에게 양식과 선물을 주어 보내매
Now while he was not yet gone back , he said, Go back also to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan , whom the king of Babylon hath made governor over the cities of Judah , and dwell with him among the people : or go wheresoever it seemeth convenient unto thee to go . So the captain of the guard gave him victuals and a reward , and let him go .
6. 예레미야가 미스바로 가서 아히감의 아들 그다랴에게로 나아가서 그 땅에 남아 있는 백성 중에서 그와 함께 거하니라
Then went Jeremiah unto Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah ; and dwelt with him among the people that were left in the land .
7. 들에 있는 군대장관들과 그들의 사람들이 바벨론 왕이 아히감의 아들 그다랴를 이 땅 총독으로 세우고 남녀와 유아와 바벨론으로 옮기지 아니한 빈민을 그에게 위임하였다 함을 듣고
Now when all the captains of the forces which were in the fields , even they and their men , heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah the son of Ahikam governor in the land , and had committed unto him men , and women , and children , and of the poor of the land , of them that were not carried away captive to Babylon ;
8. 그들 곧 느다냐의 아들 이스마엘과 가레아의 두 아들 요하난과 요나단과 단후멧의 아들 스라야와 느도바 사람 에배의 아들들과 마아가 사람의 아들 여사냐와 그들의 사람들이 미스바로 가서 그다랴에게 이르니
Then they came to Gedaliah to Mizpah , even Ishmael the son of Nethaniah , and Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah , and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth , and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite , and Jezaniah the son of a Maachathite , they and their men .
9. 사반의 손자 아히감의 아들 그다랴가 그들과 그들의 사람들에게 맹세하며 가로되 너희는 갈대아인 섬기기를 두려워하지 말고 이 땅에 거하여 바벨론 왕을 섬기라 그리하면 너희에게 유익하리라
And Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan sware unto them and to their men , saying , Fear not to serve the Chaldeans : dwell in the land , and serve the king of Babylon , and it shall be well with you.
10. 나는 미스바에 거하여 우리에게로 오는 갈대아인을 섬기리니 너희는 포도주와 여름 실과와 기름을 모아 그릇에 저축하고 너희의 얻은 성읍들에 거하라 하니라
As for me, behold, I will dwell at Mizpah to serve the Chaldeans , which will come unto us: but ye, gather ye wine , and summer fruits , and oil , and put them in your vessels , and dwell in your cities that ye have taken .
11. 모압과 암몬 자손 중과 에돔과 모든 지방에 있는 유다인도 바벨론 왕이 유다에 사람을 남겨 둔 것과 사반의 손자 아히감의 아들 그다랴를 그들의 위에 세웠다 함을 듣고
Likewise when all the Jews that were in Moab , and among the Ammonites , and in Edom , and that were in all the countries , heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant of Judah , and that he had set over them Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan ;
12. 그 모든 유다인이 쫓겨났던 각처에서 돌아와 유다 땅 미스바 그다랴에게 이르러 포도주와 여름 실과를 심히 많이 모으니라
Even all the Jews returned out of all places whither they were driven , and came to the land of Judah , to Gedaliah , unto Mizpah , and gathered wine and summer fruits very much .
13. 가레아의 아들 요하난과 들에 있던 군대장관들이 미스바 그다랴에게 이르러
Moreover Johanan the son of Kareah , and all the captains of the forces that were in the fields , came to Gedaliah to Mizpah ,
14. 그에게 이르되 암몬 자손의 왕 바알리스가 네 생명을 취하려 하여 느다냐의 아들 이스마엘을 보낸 줄 네가 아느냐 하되 아히감의 아들 그다랴가 믿지 아니한지라
And said unto him, Dost thou certainly know that Baalis the king of the Ammonites hath sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to slay thee? But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam believed them not.
15. 가레아의 아들 요하난이 미스바에서 그다랴에게 비밀히 말하여 가로되 청하노니 나로 가서 사람이 모르게 느다냐의 아들 이스마엘을 죽이게 하라 어찌하여 그로 네 생명을 취케 하여 네게 모인 모든 유다인으로 흩어지며 유다의 남은 자로 멸망을 당케 하랴
Then Johanan the son of Kareah spake to Gedaliah in Mizpah secretly , saying , Let me go , I pray thee, and I will slay Ishmael the son of Nethaniah , and no man shall know it: wherefore should he slay thee, that all the Jews which are gathered unto thee should be scattered , and the remnant in Judah perish ?
16. 그러나 아히감의 아들 그다랴가 가레아의 아들 요하난에게 이르되 네가 이 일을 행치 말 것이니라 너의 이스마엘에 대한 말은 진정이 아니니라 하니라
But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said unto Johanan the son of Kareah , Thou shalt not do this thing : for thou speakest falsely of Ishmael .

【렘40:1 JFB】렘40:1-16. Jeremiah Is Set Free at Ramah, and Goes to Gedaliah, to Whom the Remnant of Jews Repair. Johanan Warns Gedaliah of Ishmael's Conspiracy inVain.
1. word that came—the heading of a new part of the book (the forty-first through forty-fourth chapters), namely, the prophecies to the Jews in Judea and Egypt after the taking of the city, blended with history. The prophecy does not begin till 렘42:7, and the previous history is introductory to it.
bound in chains—Though released from the court of the prison (see on 렘39:14), in the confusion at the burning of the city he seems to have been led away in chains with the other captives, and not till he reached Ramah to have gained full liberty. Nebuzara-dan had his quarters at Ramah, in Benjamin; and there he collected the captives previous to their removal to Babylon (렘31:15). He in releasing Jeremiah obeyed the king's commands (렘39:11). Jeremiah's "chains" for a time were due to the negligence of those to whom he had been committed; or else to Nebuzara-dan's wish to upbraid the people with their perverse ingratitude in imprisoning Jeremiah [Calvin]; hence he addresses the people (ye … you) as much as Jeremiah (렘40:2, 3).
【렘40:1 CWC】Chapter 40 opens with an account of Nebuchadnezzar's kindness to Jeremiah, inspired by what he had known of the latter's advice to his countrymen (vv. 1-4). Jeremiah had been the friend of Babylon, but not necessarily the enemy of his own nation. His patriotism was unquestioned, but the highest expression of his patriotism was his counsel to Judah to obey the will of God and submit to Babylon.
Jeremiah's choice of action is in verses five and six. The new governor is loyal and things promise well (vv. 7-12). But the Ammonites see an opportunity to get even with their old enemy and obtain control of their land through the treachery of an apostate Jew (vv. 13-16).
Chapter 41 narrates how the plot is carried out (vv. 1-10), and the resultant fear on the part of the people (vv. 11-18). This fear leads them to plan an exodus from Judah into Egypt.
Chapter 42 shows them consulting with the prophet before carrying out this plan, albeit they are determined to do it.
Chapter 43 is a prophecy of Egypt's conquest by Babylon (vv. 8-13) delivered after Jeremiah's arrival there (vv. 4-7). Today the place indicated in verse nine is marked by a ruined column.
Jeremiah's Last Message.
The contents of chapter 44 may be regarded as the continuation of the preceding, though how long after the entrance into Egypt the prophecy was uttered is impossible to say. Some have surmised twenty-five years. Certainly the Jews had spread themselves considerably (v. 1). The prophecy opens with a retrospect (vv. 2-6); but present conditions are no improvement over the past (vv. 7-10); only doom can await them (vv. 11-14). Opposition is aroused as of old (vv. 15-19), showing the former infatuation (v. 17). They had forgotten that God gave them these good things even when they were rebelling against him (Hosea Chap. 11). So men still trace misfortune to everything but the true cause, which is sin. Notice the prominence of women here, on whose regeneration that of society still depends. The prophecy concludes with the prediction of an awful judgment, the truth of which will be established by an appeal to history (vv. 20-30).
Baruch Counselled.
Chapter 45 is a word to Baruch, the prophet's amanuensis and friend, spoken doubtless at an earlier period than its position indicates, and some would say just after the events of chapter 36. Weighed down by responsibility and dismayed at the aspect of things, he is seeking better things for himself -- an easier lot dare we say? At all events he is warned of his moral danger at the same time that he is promised physical deliverance at least, in the dire hour coming on the land (v. 5). He accompanied Jeremiah into Egypt, and to his labors doubtless, we trace the copies of these prophecies which have circulated in that country, and given rise to a Greek version of them (the Septuagint so-called).

렘40:1-6 The captain of the guard seems to glory that he had been God's instrument to fulfil, what Jeremiah had been God's messenger to foretell. Many can see God's justice and truth with regard to others, who are heedless and blind as to themselves and their own sins. But, sooner or later, all men shall be made sensible that their sin is the cause of all their miseries. Jeremiah has leave to dispose of himself; but is advised to go to Gedaliah, governor of the land under the king of Babylon. It is doubtful whether Jeremiah acted right in this decision. But those who desire the salvation of sinners, and the good of the church, are apt to expect better times from slight appearances, and they will prefer the hope of being useful, to the most secure situations without it.
렘40:7-16 Jeremiah had never in his prophecies spoken of any good days for the Jews, to come immediately after the captivity; yet Providence seemed to encourage such an expectation. But how soon is this hopeful prospect blighted! When God begins a judgment, he will complete it. While pride, ambition, or revenge, bears rule in the heart, men will form new projects, and be restless in mischief, which commonly ends in their own ruin. Who would have thought, that after the destruction of Jerusalem, rebellion would so soon have sprung up? There can be no thorough change but what grace makes. And if the miserable, who are kept in everlasting chains for the judgment of the great day, were again permitted to come on earth, the sin and evil of their nature would be unchanged. Lord, give us new hearts, and that new mind in which the new birth consists, since thou hast said we cannot without it see thy heavenly kingdom.
【렘40:2 JFB】2. The Babylonians were in some measure aware, through Jeremiah's prophecies (렘39:11), that they were the instruments of God's wrath on His people.
【렘40:3 JFB】3. ye—(See on 렘40:1). His address is directed to the Jews as well as to Jeremiah. God makes the very heathen testify for Him against them (신29:24, 25).
【렘40:4 JFB】4. look well unto thee—the very words of Nebuchadnezzar's charge (렘39:12).
all the land is before thee … seemeth good—(창20:15, Margin). Jeremiah alone had the option given him of staying where he pleased, when all the rest were either carried off or forced to remain there.
【렘40:5 JFB】5. while he was not yet gone back—parenthetical. When Jeremiah hesitated whether it would be best for him to go, Nebuzara-dan proceeded to say, "Go, then, to Gedaliah," (not as English Version, "Go back, also"), if thou preferrest (as Nebuzara-dan inferred from Jeremiah's hesitancy) to stop here rather than go with me.
victuals—(사33:16).
reward—rather, "a present." This must have been a seasonable relief to the prophet, who probably lost his all in the siege.
【렘40:6 JFB】6. Mizpah—in Benjamin, northwest of Jerusalem (렘41:5, 6, 9). Not the Mizpah in Gilead, beyond Jordan (유10:17). Jeremiah showed his patriotism and piety in remaining in his country amidst afflictions and notwithstanding the ingratitude of the Jews, rather than go to enjoy honors and pleasures in a heathen court (히11:24-26). This vindicates his purity of motive in his withdrawal (렘37:12-14).
【렘40:7 JFB】7. captains … in the fields—The leaders of the Jewish army had been "scattered" throughout the country on the capture of Zedekiah (렘52:8), in order to escape the notice of the Chaldeans.

Maachathite—from Maachathi, at the foot of Mount Hermon (신3:14).
【렘40:9 JFB】9. Fear not—They were afraid that they should not obtain pardon from the Chaldeans for their acts. He therefore assured them of safety by an oath.
serve—literally, "to stand before" (렘40:10; 렘52:12), that is, to be at hand ready to execute the commands of the king of Babylon.
【렘40:10 JFB】10. Mizpah—lying on the way between Babylon and Judah, and so convenient for transacting business between the two countries.
As for me … but ye—He artfully, in order to conciliate them, represents the burden of the service to the Chaldeans as falling on him, while they may freely gather their wine, fruits, and oil. He does not now add that these very fruits were to constitute the chief part of the tribute to be paid to Babylon: which, though fruitful in corn, was less productive of grapes, figs, and olives [Herodotus, 1.193]. The grant of "vineyards" to the "poor" (렘39:10) would give hope to the discontended of enjoying the best fruits (렘40:12).

believed … not—generous, but unwise unsuspiciousness (전9:16).
