■ 예레미야 37장
1. 요시야의 아들 시드기야가 여호야김의 아들 고니야를 대신하여 왕이 되었으니 이는 바벨론 왕 느부갓네살이 그로 유다 땅의 왕을 삼음이었더라
And king Zedekiah the son of Josiah reigned instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim , whom Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah .
2. 그와 그 신하와 그 땅 백성이 여호와께서 선지자 예레미야로 하신 말씀을 듣지 아니하니라
But neither he, nor his servants , nor the people of the land , did hearken unto the words of the Lord , which he spake by the prophet Jeremiah .
3. 시드기야 왕이 셀레먀의 아들 여후갈과 마아세야의 아들 제사장 스바냐를 선지자 예레미야에게 보내어 청하되 너는 우리를 위하여 우리 하나님 여호와께 기도하라 하였으니
And Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest to the prophet Jeremiah , saying , Pray now unto the Lord our God for us.
4. 때에 예레미야가 갇히지 아니하였으므로 백성 가운데 출입하는 중이었더라
Now Jeremiah came in and went out among the people : for they had not put him into prison .
5. 바로의 군대가 애굽에서 나오매 예루살렘을 에워쌌던 갈대아인이 그 소문을 듣고 예루살렘에서 떠났더라
Then Pharaoh’s army was come forth out of Egypt : and when the Chaldeans that besieged Jerusalem heard tidings of them, they departed from Jerusalem .
6. 여호와의 말씀이 선지자 예레미야에게 임하여 가라사대
Then came the word of the Lord unto the prophet Jeremiah , saying ,
7. 이스라엘의 하나님 나 여호와가 이같이 말하노라 너희를 보내어 내게 구하게 한 유다 왕에게 이르라 너희를 도우려고 나왔던 바로의 군대는 자기 땅 애굽으로 돌아가겠고
Thus saith the Lord , the God of Israel ; Thus shall ye say to the king of Judah , that sent you unto me to enquire of me; Behold, Pharaoh’s army , which is come forth to help you, shall return to Egypt into their own land .
8. 갈대아인이 다시 와서 이 성을 쳐서 취하여 불사르리라
And the Chaldeans shall come again , and fight against this city , and take it, and burn it with fire .
9. 나 여호와가 이같이 말하노라 너희는 스스로 속여 말하기를 갈대아인이 반드시 우리를 떠나리라 하지 말라 그들이 떠나지 아니하리라
Thus saith the Lord ; Deceive not yourselves , saying , The Chaldeans shall surely depart from us: for they shall not depart .
10. 가령 너희가 너희를 치는 갈대아인의 온 군대를 쳐서 그 중에 부상자만 남긴다 할지라도 그들이 각기 장막에서 일어나 이 성을 불사르리라
For though ye had smitten the whole army of the Chaldeans that fight against you, and there remained but wounded men among them, yet should they rise up every man in his tent , and burn this city with fire .
11. 갈대아인의 군대가 바로의 군대를 두려워하여 예루살렘에서 떠나매
And it came to pass, that when the army of the Chaldeans was broken up from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh’s army ,
12. 예레미야가 베냐민 땅에서 백성 중 분깃을 받으려고 예루살렘을 떠나 그리로 가려하여
Then Jeremiah went forth out of Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin , to separate himself thence in the midst of the people .
13. 베냐민 문에 이른즉 하나냐의 손자요 셀레먀의 아들인 이리야라 이름하는 문지기의 두목이 선지자 예레미야를 붙잡아 가로되 네가 갈대아인에게 항복하려 하는도다
And when he was in the gate of Benjamin , a captain of the ward was there, whose name was Irijah , the son of Shelemiah , the son of Hananiah ; and he took Jeremiah the prophet , saying , Thou fallest away to the Chaldeans .
14. 예레미야가 가로되 망령되다 나는 갈대아인에게 항복하려 하지 아니하노라 이리야가 듣지 아니하고 예레미야를 잡아 방백들에게로 끌어가매
Then said Jeremiah , It is false ; I fall not away to the Chaldeans . But he hearkened not to him: so Irijah took Jeremiah , and brought him to the princes .
15. 방백들이 노하여 예레미야를 때려서 서기관 요나단의 집에 가두었으니 이는 그들이 이 집으로 옥을 삼았음이더라
Wherefore the princes were wroth with Jeremiah , and smote him, and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe : for they had made that the prison .
16. 예레미야가 토굴 옥 음실에 들어간지 여러 날 만에
When Jeremiah was entered into the dungeon , and into the cabins , and Jeremiah had remained there many days ;
17. 시드기야 왕이 보내어 그를 이끌어 내고 왕궁에서 그에게 비밀히 물어 가로되 여호와께로서 받은 말씀이 있느뇨 예레미야가 대답하되 있나이다 또 가로되 왕이 바벨론 왕의 손에 붙임을 입으리이다
Then Zedekiah the king sent , and took him out : and the king asked him secretly in his house , and said , Is there any word from the Lord ? And Jeremiah said , There is : for, said he, thou shalt be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon .
18. 예레미야가 다시 시드기야 왕에게 이르되 내가 왕에게나 왕의 신하에게나 이 백성에게 무슨 죄를 범하였관대 나를 옥에 가두었나이까
Moreover Jeremiah said unto king Zedekiah , What have I offended against thee, or against thy servants , or against this people , that ye have put me in prison ?
19. 바벨론 왕이 와서 왕과 이 땅을 치지 아니하리라고 예언한 왕의 선지자들이 이제 어디 있나이까
Where are now your prophets which prophesied unto you, saying , The king of Babylon shall not come against you, nor against this land ?
20. 내 주 왕이여 이제 청컨대 나를 들으시며 나의 탄원을 받으사 나를 서기관 요나단의 집으로 돌려 보내지 마옵소서 내가 거기서 죽을까 두려워하나이다
Therefore hear now, I pray thee, O my lord the king : let my supplication , I pray thee, be accepted before thee; that thou cause me not to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe , lest I die there.
21. 이에 시드기야 왕이 명하여 예레미야를 시위대 뜰에 두고 떡 만드는 자의 거리에서 매일 떡 한덩이씩 그에게 주게 하매 성중에 떡이 다할 때까지 이르니라 예레미야가 시위대 뜰에 머무니라
Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah into the court of the prison , and that they should give him daily a piece of bread out of the bakers’ street , until all the bread in the city were spent . Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison .

Zedekiah Sends to Jeremiah to Pray toGod in Behalf of the Jews: in Vain, Jeremiah Tries to Escape to His Native Place, but Is Arrested. Zedekiah Abates the Rigor of HisImprisonment.

whom—referring to Zedekiah, not to Coniah (왕하24:17).
【렘37:1 CWC】[CLOSING EVENTS OF THE SIEGE]
We are again in Zedekiah's reign (v. 1), and the same disobedience as before marks the period (v. 2). We are astonished at the effrontery accompanying it, (v. 3). Note the occasion when this prayer is solicited (vv. 4, 5). Egypt has come up to help, and the Babylonians in consequence, have raised the siege in order to meet the approaching army. Is it not an indication that God has changed His mind about Judah after all? The answer is found in verses six to ten.
Verses 11-15 tell their own sad story. Notice the vacillation of the king (vv. 16, 17). Why does this man thus play hot and cold, and fast and loose with heaven? If God is the Lord, why not serve Him, and if not, why be interested to inquire of Him? Has this type of man yet vanished from the earth? How does he now lighten the prophet's suffering (vv. 18-21) ? How does the last verse indicate the straitness of the siege?
In chapter 38, what illustration have we of the political weakness and the moral meanness of Zedekiah (w. 1-6)? Whom does God now raise up to befriend His servant (vv. 7-13)? What further counsel of the king follows (vv. 14-23)? Is any change of the divine policy evident in this?
Although the king urges on the prophet a subterfuge (vv. 24, 35), there is no reason to feel that the prophet employed it. He probably did not tell the princes all that transpired, nor was there obligation on him to do so, but that he deliberately lied, even to save his life, is beyond belief (vv. 26-28).
In chapter 39 the end is reached. Compare verses 5, 6 with 32:4 and 겔12:13.
Note that a remnant is left in Jerusalem though the bulk of the people are deported (v. 10). Note the deference paid the prophet by the besieging army (vv. 11-14), and the manner in which God promised kindness to Ebed-Melech (vv. 15-18).
THE REMNANT AND THE PROPHET'S LAST MESSAGE

렘37:1-10 Numbers witness the fatal effects of other men's sins, yet heedlessly step into their places, and follow the same destructive course. When in distress, we ought to desire the prayers of ministers and Christian friends. And it is common for those to desire to be prayed for, who will not be advised; yet sinners are often hardened by a pause in judgments. But if God help us not, no creature can. Whatever instruments God has determined to use, they shall do the work, though they seem unlikely.
렘37:11-21 There are times when it is the wisdom of good men to retire, to enter into their chambers, and to shut the doors, 사26:20. Jeremiah was seized as a deserter, and committed to prison. But it is no new thing for the best friends of the church to be belied, as in the interests of her worst enemies. When thus falsely accused, we may deny the charge, and commit our cause to Him who judges righteously. Jeremiah obtained mercy of the Lord to be faithful, and would not, to obtain mercy of man, be unfaithful to God or to his prince; he tells the king the whole truth. When Jeremiah delivered God's message, he spake with boldness; but when he made his own request, he spake submissively. A lion in God's cause must be a lamb in his own. And God gave Jeremiah favour in the eyes of the king. The Lord God can make even the cells of a prison become pastures to his people, and will raise up friends to provide for them, so that in the days of famine they shall be satisfied.

【렘37:3 JFB】3. Zedekiah … sent—fearing lest, in the event of the Chaldeans overcoming Pharaoh-hophra, they should return to besiege Jerusalem. See on 렘21:1; that chapter chronologically comes in between the thirty-seventh and thirty-eighth chapter. The message of the king to Jeremiah here in the thirty-seventh chapter is, however, somewhat earlier than that in the twenty-first chapter; here it is while the issue between the Chaldeans and Pharaoh was undecided; there it is when, after the repulse of Pharaoh, the Chaldeans were again advancing against Jerusalem; hence, while Zephaniah is named in both embassies, Jehucal accompanies him here, Pashur there. But, as Pashur and Jehucal are both mentioned in 렘38:1, 2, as hearing Jeremiah's reply, which is identical with that in 렘21:9, it is probable the two messages followed one another at a short interval; that in this 렘37:3, and the answer, 렘37:7-10, being the earlier of the two.
Zephaniah—an abettor of rebellion against God (렘29:25), though less virulent than many (렘29:29), punished accordingly (렘52:24-27).
【렘37:4 JFB】4. Jeremiah … not put … into prison—He was no longer in the prison court, as he had been (렘32:2; 33:1), which passages refer to the beginning of the siege, not to the time when the Chaldeans renewed the siege, after having withdrawn for a time to meet Pharaoh.
【렘37:5 JFB】5. After this temporary diversion, caused by Pharaoh in favor of Jerusalem, the Egyptians returned no more to its help (왕하24:7). Judea had the misfortune to lie between the two great contending powers, Babylon and Egypt, and so was exposed to the alternate inroads of the one or the other. Josiah, taking side with Assyria, fell in battle with Pharaoh-necho at Megiddo (왕하23:29). Zedekiah, seeking the Egyptian alliance in violation of his oath, was now about to be taken by Nebuchadnezzar (대하36:13; 겔17:15, 17).

to separate himself—Margin translates, "to slip away," from a Hebrew root, "to be smooth," so, to slip away as a slippery thing that cannot be held. But it is not likely the prophet of God would flee in a dishonorable way; and "in the midst of the people" rather implies open departure along with others, than clandestine slipping away by mixing with the crowd of departing people. Rather, it means, to separate himself, or to divide his place of residence, so as to live partly here, partly there, without fixed habitation, going to and fro among the people [Ludovicus De Dieu]. Maurer translates, "to take his portion thence," to realize the produce of his property in Anathoth [Henderson], or to take possession of the land which he bought from Hanameel [Maurer].
【렘37:13 JFB】13. ward—that is, the "guard," or "watch."
Hananiah—whose death Jeremiah predicted (렘28:16). The grandson in revenge takes Jeremiah into custody on the charge of deserting ("thou fallest away," 렘38:19; 52:15; 삼상29:3) to the enemy. His prophecies gave color to the charge (렘21:9; 38:4).

lest I die there—in the subterranean dungeon (렘37:16), from want of proper sustenance (렘37:21). The prophet naturally shrank from death, which makes his spiritual firmness the more remarkable; he was ready to die rather than swerve from his duty [Calvin].
