  Thus saith the Lord , Go and get a potter’s earthen bottle , and take of the ancients of the people , and of the ancients of the priests ;

And go forth unto the valley of the son of Hinnom , which is by the entry of the east gate , and proclaim there the words that I shall tell thee,

And say , Hear ye the word of the Lord , O kings of Judah , and inhabitants of Jerusalem ; Thus saith the Lord of hosts , the God of Israel ; Behold, I will bring evil upon this place , the which whosoever heareth , his ears shall tingle .

  Because they have forsaken me, and have estranged this place , and have burned incense in it unto other gods , whom neither they nor their fathers have known , nor the kings of Judah , and have filled this place with the blood of innocents ;

They have built also the high places of Baal , to burn their sons with fire for burnt offerings unto Baal , which I commanded not, nor spake it, neither came it into my mind :

Therefore, behold, the days come , saith the Lord , that this place shall no more be called Tophet , nor The valley of the son of Hinnom , but The valley of slaughter .

And I will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place ; and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies , and by the hands of them that seek their lives : and their carcases will I give to be meat for the fowls of the heaven , and for the beasts of the earth .

And I will make this city desolate , and an hissing ; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished and hiss because of all the plagues thereof.

And I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters , and they shall eat every one the flesh of his friend in the siege and straitness , wherewith their enemies , and they that seek their lives , shall straiten them.

Then shalt thou break the bottle in the sight of the men that go with thee,

And shalt say unto them, Thus saith the Lord of hosts ; Even so will I break this people and this city , as one breaketh a potter’s vessel , that cannot be made whole again : and they shall bury them in Tophet , till there be no place to bury .

Thus will I do unto this place , saith the Lord , and to the inhabitants thereof, and even make this city as Tophet :

And the houses of Jerusalem , and the houses of the kings of Judah , shall be defiled as the place of Tophet , because of all the houses upon whose roofs they have burned incense unto all the host of heaven , and have poured out drink offerings unto other gods .

Then came Jeremiah from Tophet , whither the Lord had sent him to prophesy ; and he stood in the court of the Lord’s house ; and said to all the people ,

Thus saith the Lord of hosts , the God of Israel ; Behold, I will bring upon this city and upon all her towns all the evil that I have pronounced against it, because they have hardened their necks , that they might not hear my words .

【렘19:1 JFB】렘19:1-15. The Desolation of the Jews for Their Sins Foretold in the Valley of Hinnom; the Symbol of Breaking a Bottle.
Referred by Maurer, &c., to the beginning of Zedekiah's reign.
1. bottle—Hebrew, bakuk, so called from the gurgling sound which it makes when being emptied.
ancients—elders. As witnesses of the symbolic action (렘19:10; 사8:1, 2), that the Jews might not afterwards plead ignorance of the prophecy. The seventy-two elders, composing the Sanhedrim, or Great Council, were taken partly from "the priests," partly from the other tribes, that is, "the people," the former presiding over spiritual matters, the latter over civil; the seventy-two represented the whole people.

【렘19:1 CWC】["IN THE SWELLING OF JORDAN"]
God told the prophet worse was to come. "The Swelling of Jordan" would be experienced later, and in the present lesson, especially towards the close, we have an illustration of it.
There are things of interest to look at in the meantime, for example an illustration of that symbolic teaching mentioned earlier.
1. In chapter 13 we have what two symbols? See verses 1-11 for the first and 12-14 for the second. The prophet acted these out before the people just as he was told. The significance of the first is apparent, the second means that the destruction of Jerusalem would be brought about by her own conduct. The evils in her would cause her to be filled with a rebellious spirit as with drunkenness. "Mutual self-seeking and distrust would produce a condition where God could not pity."
2. Look at the prophet from the point of view of intercessor (cc. 14, 15), nothing more affecting in the same line being found anywhere in the Bible. Note the occasion (14:1-6); the first supplication (vv. 7-9); the divine reply (vv. 10-12); the renewal of the prayer and the excuse for Judah that is pleaded (v. 13); God's answer (vv. 14-19); the prophet's pleading and confession (vv 19-22); his final rejection (15:1-9). See the personal lament and inquiry that follow (vv. 10-18), and God's comfort and instruction to him (vv. 19-20).
3. Chapter 16 has a peculiar interest as carrying out 고전7:32, 33. The prophet's life must be an independent and separated one. He must be a celibate, and shun all social amusements (vv. 1-9). His attitude in these matters would be symbolic and give him further opportunity to instruct and warn the people (v. 17, and the following).
4. Another symbol in chapters 18 and 19, and a lesson about the divine sovereignty. Judah was a vessel marred in the making, not through want of skill on the potter's part, but because of resisting elements in the clay. It is to be broken that a better vessel may be made.
5. It is the use the prophet makes of this earthen vessel that brings on him the suffering recorded in the next chapter. Read chapters 19 and 20 together. He is in the swelling of Jordan now (20:1-2 -- compare 눅20:2). See how he meets his enemy and God's in the next verses (vv. 3-6), remembering as he does, the divine warning not to be "dismayed at their faces" (c. 1). But when the crisis is past and he is in his own chamber, how discouraged he appears (vv. 7-10). He complains that God had coerced him into this ministry. He would turn his back upon it if he could, but God will not permit him. He is between two fires, persecution without and the Holy Ghost within, and the latter being the hotter fire of the two he is compelled to the work again.
In other words God gains the victory in him (vv. 11-13), and he is at length able to sing praises to His holy name.

【렘19:1 MHCC】 By the type of breaking an earthen vessel, Jeremiah is to predict the destruction of Judah.

렘19:1-9 The prophet must give notice of ruin coming upon Judah and Jerusalem. Both rulers and ruled must attend to it. That place which holiness made the joy of the whole earth, sin made the reproach and shame of the whole earth. There is no fleeing from God's justice, but by fleeing to his mercy.

렘19:10-15 The potter's vessel, after it is hardened, can never be pieced again when it is broken. And as the bottle was broken, so shall Judah and Jerusalem be broken by the Chaldeans. No human hand can repair it; but if they return to the Lord he will heal. As they filled Tophet with the slain sacrificed to their idols, so will God fill the whole city with the slain that shall fall as sacrifices to his justice. Whatever men may think, God will appear as terrible against sin and sinners as the Scriptures state; nor shall the unbelief of men make his promise or his threatenings of no effect. The obstinacy of sinners in sinful ways, is their own fault; if they are deaf to the word of God, it is because they have stopped their ears. We have need to pray that God, by his grace, would deliver us from hardness of heart, and contempt of his word and commandments.

【렘19:2 JFB】2. valley of the son of Hinnom—or Tophet, south of Jerusalem, where human victims were offered, and children made to pass through the fire, in honor of Molech.
east gate—Margin, "sun gate," sunrise being in the east.Maurer translates, the "potter's gate." Through it lay the road to the valley of Hinnom (수15:8). The potters there formed vessels for the use of the temple, which was close by (compare 렘19:10, 14; 렘18:2; Z전11:13). The same as "the water gate toward the east" (느3:26; 12:37); so called from the brook Kedron. Calvin translates, as English Version and Margin. "It was monstrous perversity to tread the law under foot in so conspicuous a place, over which the sun daily rising reminded them of the light of God's law."

【렘19:3 JFB】3. The scene of their guilt is chosen as the scene of the denunciation against them.
kings—the king and queen (렘13:18); or including the king's counsellors and governors under him.
tingle—as if struck by a thunder peal (삼상3:11; 왕하21:12).

【렘19:4 JFB】4.
estranged this place—devoted it to the worship of strange gods: alienating a portion of the sacred city from God, the rightful Lord of the temple, city, and whole land.
nor their fathers—namely, the godly among them; their ungodly fathers God makes no account of.
blood of innocents—slain in honor of Molech (렘7:31; 시106:37).

【렘19:5 JFB】5. commanded not—nay, more, I commanded the opposite (레18:21; see 렘7:31, 32).

【렘19:6 JFB】6. no more … Tophet—from Hebrew, toph, "drum"; for in sacrificing children to Molech drums were beaten to drown their cries. Thus the name indicated the joy of the people at the fancied propitiation of the god by this sacrifice; in antithesis to its joyless name subsequently.
valley of slaughter—It should be the scene of slaughter, no longer of children, but of men; not of "innocents" (렘19:4), but of those who richly deserved their fate. The city could not be assailed without first occupying the valley of Hinnom, in which was the only fountain: hence arose the violent battle there.

【렘19:7 JFB】7. make void the counsel—defeat their plans for repelling the enemy (대하32:1-4; 사19:3; 22:9, 11). Or their schemes of getting help by having recourse to idols [Calvin].
in this place—The valley of Hinnom was to be the place of the Chaldean encampment; the very place where they looked for help from idols was to be the scene of their own slaughter.

【렘19:8 JFB】8. (See on 렘18:16).

【렘19:9 JFB】9.

【렘19:10 JFB】10. break … bottle—a symbolical action, explained in 렘19:11.
the men—the elders of the people and of the priests (렘19:1; compare 렘51:63, 64).

【렘19:11 JFB】11. as one breaketh a potter's vessel—expressing God's absolute sovereignty (렘18:6; 시2:9; 사30:14, Margin;애4:2; 롬9:20, 21).
cannot be made whole again—A broken potter's vessel cannot be restored, but a new one may be made of the same material. So God raised a new Jewish seed, not identical with the destroyed rebels, but by substituting another generation in their stead [Grotius].
no place to bury—(렘7:32).

【렘19:12 JFB】12. make this city as Tophet—that is, as defiled with dead bodies as Tophet.

【렘19:13 JFB】13. shall be defiled—with dead bodies (렘19:12; 왕하23:10).
because of all the houses—Rather, (explanatory of the previous "the houses … and … houses"), "even all the houses," &c. [Calvin].
roofs—being flat, they were used as high places for sacrifices to the sun and planets (렘32:29; 왕하23:11, 12; 습1:5). The Nabateans, south and east of the Dead Sea, a nation most friendly to the Jews, according to Strabo, had the same usage.

【렘19:14 JFB】14. court of the Lord's house—near Tophet; the largest court, under the open air, where was the greatest crowd (대하20:5).
