■ 예레미야 16장

1. 여호와의 말씀이 또 내게 임하니라 가라사대

  The word of the Lord came also unto me, saying ,

 

2. 너는 이 땅에서 아내를 취하지 말며 자녀를 두지 말지니라

  Thou shalt not take thee a wife , neither shalt thou have sons or daughters in this place .

 

3. 이곳에서 생산한 자녀와 이 땅에서 그들을 해산한 어미와 그들을 낳은 아비에 대하여 나 여호와가 이같이 말하노라

  For thus saith the Lord concerning the sons and concerning the daughters that are born in this place , and concerning their mothers that bare them, and concerning their fathers that begat them in this land ;

 

4. 그들은 독한 병으로 죽고 슬퍼함을 입지 못하며 매장함을 얻지 못하여 지면의 분토와 같을 것이며 칼과 기근에 망하고 그 시체는 공중의 새와 땅 짐승의 밥이 되리라

  They shall die of grievous deaths ; they shall not be lamented ; neither shall they be buried ; but they shall be as dung upon the face of the earth : and they shall be consumed by the sword , and by famine ; and their carcases shall be meat for the fowls of heaven , and for the beasts of the earth .

 

5. 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하시되 상가에 들어가지 말라 가서 통곡하지 말며 그들을 위하여 애곡하지 말라 내가 이 백성에게서 나의 평강을 빼앗으며 인자와 긍휼을 제함이니라 여호와의 말이니라

  For thus saith the Lord , Enter not into the house of mourning , neither go to lament nor bemoan them: for I have taken away my peace from this people , saith the Lord , even lovingkindness and mercies .

 

6. 큰 자든지 작은 자든지 이 땅에서 죽으리니 그들이 매장되지 못할 것이며 그들을 위하여 애곡하는 자도 없겠고 자기 몸을 베거나 대머리 되게 하는 자도 없을 것이며

  Both the great and the small shall die in this land : they shall not be buried , neither shall men lament for them, nor cut themselves, nor make themselves bald for them:

 

7. 슬플 때에 떡을 떼며 그 죽은 자를 인하여 그들을 위로하는 자가 없을 것이며 그들의 아비나 어미의 상사를 위하여 위로의 잔을 그들에게 마시울 자가 없으리라

  Neither shall men tear themselves for them in mourning , to comfort them for the dead ; neither shall men give them the cup of consolation to drink for their father or for their mother .

 

8. 너는 잔치집에 들어가서 그들과 함께 앉아 먹거나 마시지 말라

  Thou shalt not also go into the house of feasting , to sit with them to eat and to drink .

 

9. 만군의 여호와 이스라엘의 하나님이 이같이 말하노라 보라 기뻐하는 소리와 즐거워하는 소리와 신랑의 소리와 신부의 소리를 내가 네 목전, 네 시대에 이곳에서 끊어지게 하리라

  For thus saith the Lord of hosts , the God of Israel ; Behold, I will cause to cease out of this place in your eyes , and in your days , the voice of mirth , and the voice of gladness , the voice of the bridegroom , and the voice of the bride .

 

10. 네가 이 모든 말로 백성에게 고할 때에 그들이 네게 묻기를 여호와께서 우리에게 이 모든 큰 재앙을 광포하심은 어찜이며 우리의 죄악은 무엇이며 우리가 우리 하나님 여호와께 범한 죄는 무엇이뇨 하거든

  And it shall come to pass, when thou shalt shew this people all these words , and they shall say unto thee, Wherefore hath the Lord pronounced all this great evil against us? or what is our iniquity ? or what is our sin that we have committed against the Lord our God ?

 

11. 너는 그들에게 대답하기를 여호와께서 말씀하시되 너희 열조가 나를 버리고 다른 신들을 좇아서 그들을 섬기며 그들에게 절하고 나를 버려 내 법을 지키지 아니하였음이라

  Then shalt thou say unto them, Because your fathers have forsaken me, saith the Lord , and have walked after other gods , and have served them, and have worshipped them, and have forsaken me, and have not kept my law ;

 

12. 너희가 너희 열조보다 더욱 악을 행하였도다 보라 너희가 각기 악한 마음의 강퍅함을 따라 행하고 나를 청종치 아니하였으므로

  And ye have done worse than your fathers ; for, behold , ye walk every one after the imagination of his evil heart , that they may not hearken unto me:

 

13. 내가 너희를 이 땅에서 쫓아 내어 너희와 너희 열조의 알지 못하던 땅에 이르게 할 것이라 너희가 거기서 주야로 다른 신들을 섬기리니 이는 내가 너희에게 은혜를 베풀지 아니함이라 하셨다 하라

  Therefore will I cast you out of this land into a land that ye know not, neither ye nor your fathers ; and there shall ye serve other gods day and night ; where I will not shew you favour .

 

14. 여호와께서 가라사대 그러나 보라 날이 이르리니 다시는 이스라엘 자손을 애굽 땅에서 인도하여 내신 여호와의 사심으로 맹세하지 아니하고

  Therefore, behold, the days come , saith the Lord , that it shall no more be said , The Lord liveth , that brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt ;

 

15. 이스라엘 자손을 북방 땅과 그 모든 쫓겨났던 나라에서 인도하여 내신 여호와의 사심으로 맹세하리라 내가 그들을 그 열조에게 준 그들의 땅으로 인도하여 들이리라

  But, The Lord liveth , that brought up the children of Israel from the land of the north , and from all the lands whither he had driven them: and I will bring them again into their land that I gave unto their fathers .

 

16. 여호와께서 가라사대 보라 내가 많은 어부를 불러다가 그들을 낚게 하며 그 후에 많은 포수를 불러다가 그들을 모든 산과 모든 작은 산과 암혈에서 사냥하게 하리니

  Behold, I will send for many fishers , saith the Lord , and they shall fish them; and after will I send for many hunters , and they shall hunt them from every mountain , and from every hill , and out of the holes of the rocks .

 

17. 내 눈이 그들의 행위를 감찰하므로 그들이 내 얼굴 앞에서 숨김을 얻지 못하며 그들의 죄악이 내 목전에서 은폐되지 못함이라

  For mine eyes are upon all their ways : they are not hid from my face , neither is their iniquity hid from mine eyes .

 

18. 내가 위선 그들의 악과 죄를 배나 갚을 것은 그들이 그 미운 물건의 시체로 내 땅을 더럽히며 그들의 가증한 것으로 내 산업에 가득하게 하였음이니라

  And first I will recompense their iniquity and their sin double ; because they have defiled my land , they have filled mine inheritance with the carcases of their detestable and abominable things .

 

19. 여호와 나의 힘, 나의 보장, 환난날의 피난처시여 열방이 땅 끝에서 주께 이르러 말하기를 우리 열조의 계승한 바는 허무하고 망탄하고 무익한 것뿐이라

  O Lord , my strength , and my fortress , and my refuge in the day of affliction , the Gentiles shall come unto thee from the ends of the earth , and shall say , Surely our fathers have inherited lies , vanity , and things wherein there is no profit .

 

20. 인생이 어찌 신 아닌 것을 자기의 신으로 삼겠나이까 하리이다

  Shall a man make gods unto himself, and they are no gods ?

 

21. 여호와께서 가라사대 보라 이번에 그들에게 내 손과 내 능을 알려서 그들로 내 이름이 여호와인 줄 알게 하리라

  Therefore, behold, I will this once cause them to know , I will cause them to know mine hand and my might ; and they shall know that my name is The Lord .

【렘16:1 JFB】렘16:1-21. Continuation of the Previous Prophecy.

 

【렘16:1 CWC】["IN THE SWELLING OF JORDAN"]
God told the prophet worse was to come. "The Swelling of Jordan" would be experienced later, and in the present lesson, especially towards the close, we have an illustration of it.
There are things of interest to look at in the meantime, for example an illustration of that symbolic teaching mentioned earlier.
1. In chapter 13 we have what two symbols? See verses 1-11 for the first and 12-14 for the second. The prophet acted these out before the people just as he was told. The significance of the first is apparent, the second means that the destruction of Jerusalem would be brought about by her own conduct. The evils in her would cause her to be filled with a rebellious spirit as with drunkenness. "Mutual self-seeking and distrust would produce a condition where God could not pity."
2. Look at the prophet from the point of view of intercessor (cc. 14, 15), nothing more affecting in the same line being found anywhere in the Bible. Note the occasion (14:1-6); the first supplication (vv. 7-9); the divine reply (vv. 10-12); the renewal of the prayer and the excuse for Judah that is pleaded (v. 13); God's answer (vv. 14-19); the prophet's pleading and confession (vv 19-22); his final rejection (15:1-9). See the personal lament and inquiry that follow (vv. 10-18), and God's comfort and instruction to him (vv. 19-20).
3. Chapter 16 has a peculiar interest as carrying out 고전7:32, 33. The prophet's life must be an independent and separated one. He must be a celibate, and shun all social amusements (vv. 1-9). His attitude in these matters would be symbolic and give him further opportunity to instruct and warn the people (v. 17, and the following).
4. Another symbol in chapters 18 and 19, and a lesson about the divine sovereignty. Judah was a vessel marred in the making, not through want of skill on the potter's part, but because of resisting elements in the clay. It is to be broken that a better vessel may be made.
5. It is the use the prophet makes of this earthen vessel that brings on him the suffering recorded in the next chapter. Read chapters 19 and 20 together. He is in the swelling of Jordan now (20:1-2 -- compare 눅20:2). See how he meets his enemy and God's in the next verses (vv. 3-6), remembering as he does, the divine warning not to be "dismayed at their faces" (c. 1). But when the crisis is past and he is in his own chamber, how discouraged he appears (vv. 7-10). He complains that God had coerced him into this ministry. He would turn his back upon it if he could, but God will not permit him. He is between two fires, persecution without and the Holy Ghost within, and the latter being the hotter fire of the two he is compelled to the work again.
In other words God gains the victory in him (vv. 11-13), and he is at length able to sing praises to His holy name.

렘16:1-9 The prophet must conduct himself as one who expected to see his country ruined very shortly. In the prospect of sad times, he is to abstain from marriage, mourning for the dead, and pleasure. Those who would convince others of the truths of God, must make it appear by their self-denial, that they believe it themselves. Peace, inward and outward, family and public, is wholly the work of God, and from his loving-kindness and mercy. When He takes his peace from any people, distress must follow. There may be times when it is proper to avoid things otherwise our duty; and we should always sit loose to the pleasures and concerns of this life.
 
렘16:10-13 Here seems to be the language of those who quarrel at the word of God, and instead of humbling and condemning themselves, justify themselves, as though God did them wrong. A plain and full answer is given. They were more obstinate in sin than their fathers, walking every one after the devices of his heart. Since they will not hearken, they shall be hurried away into a far country, a land they know not. If they had God's favour, that would make even the land of their captivity pleasant.
 
렘16:14-21 The restoration from the Babylonish captivity would be remembered in place of the deliverance from Egypt; it also typified spiritual redemption, and the future deliverance of the church from antichristian oppression. But none of the sins of sinners can be hidden from God, or shall be overlooked by him. He will find out and raise up instruments of his wrath, that shall destroy the Jews, by fraud like fishers, by force like hunters. The prophet, rejoicing at the hope of mercy to come, addressed the Lord as his strength and refuge. The deliverance out of captivity shall be a figure of the great salvation to be wrought by the Messiah. The nations have often known the power of Jehovah in his wrath; but they shall know him as the strength of his people, and their refuge in time of trouble.

 

【렘16:2 JFB】2. in this place—in Judea. The direction to remain single was (whether literally obeyed, or only in prophetic vision) to symbolize the coming calamities of the Jews (겔24:15-27) as so severe that the single state would be then (contrary to the ordinary course of things) preferable to the married (compare 고전7:8, 26, 29; 마24:19; Lu 23:29).

 

【렘16:4 JFB】4. grievous deaths—rather, "deadly diseases" (렘15:2).
not … lamented—so many shall be the slain (렘22:18).
dung—(시83:10).

 

【렘16:5 JFB】5. (겔24:17, 22, 23).
house of mourning—(막5:38). Margin, "mourning-feast"; such feasts were usual at funerals. The Hebrew means, in 암6:7, the cry of joy at a banquet; here, and 애2:19, the cry of sorrow.

 

【렘16:6 JFB】6. cut themselves—indicating extravagant grief (렘41:5; 47:5), prohibited by the law (레19:28).
bald—(렘7:29; 사22:12).

 

【렘16:7 JFB】7. tear themselves—rather, "break bread," namely, that eaten at the funeral-feast (신26:14; 욥42:11; 겔24:17; 호9:4). "Bread" is to be supplied, as in 애4:4; compare "take" (food) (창42:33).
give … cup of consolation … for … father—It was the Oriental custom for friends to send viands and wine (the "cup of consolation") to console relatives in mourning-feasts, for example, to children upon the death of a "father" or "mother."

 

【렘16:8 JFB】8. house of feasting—joyous: as distinguished from mourning-feasts. Have no more to do with this people whether in mourning or joyous feasts.

imagination—rather, "stubborn perversity."
that they may not hearken—rather, connected with "ye"; "ye have walked … so as not to hearken to Me."

 

【렘16:13 JFB】13. serve other gods—That which was their sin in their own land was their punishment in exile. Retribution in kind. They voluntarily forsook God for idols at home; they were not allowed to serve God, if they wished it, in captivity (단3:12; 6:7).
day and night—irony. You may there serve idols, which ye are so mad after, even to satiety, and without intermission.

 

【렘16:14 JFB】14. Therefore—So severe shall be the Jews' bondage that their deliverance from it shall be a greater benefit than that out of Egypt. The consolation is incidental here; the prominent thought is the severity of their punishment, so great that their rescue from it will be greater than that from Egypt [Calvin]; so the context, 렘16:13, 17, 18, proves (렘23:7, 8; 사43:18).

 

【렘16:15 JFB】15. the north—Chaldea. But while the return from Babylon is primarily meant, the return hereafter is the full and final accomplishment contemplated, as "from all the lands" proves. "Israel" was not, save in a very limited sense, "gathered from all the lands" at the return from Babylon (see on 렘24:6; 렘30:3; 렘32:15).

 

【렘16:16 JFB】16. send for—translate, "I will send many"; "I will give the commission to many" (대하17:7).
fishers … hunters—successive invaders of Judea (암4:2; 합1:14, 15). So "net" (겔12:13). As to "hunters," see 창10:9; 미7:2. The Chaldees were famous in hunting, as the Egyptians, the other enemy of Judea, were in fishing. "Fishers" expresses the ease of their victory over the Jews as that of the angler over fishes; "hunters," the keenness of their pursuit of them into every cave and nook. It is remarkable, the same image is used in a good sense of the Jews' restoration, implying that just as their enemies were employed by God to take them in hand for destruction, so the same shall be employed for their restoration (겔47:9, 10). So spiritually, those once enemies by nature (fishermen many of them literally) were employed by God to be heralds of salvation, "catching men" for life (마4:19; Lu 5:10; 행2:41; 4:4); compare here 렘16:19, "the Gentiles shall come unto thee" (고후12:16).

 

【렘16:17 JFB】17. (렘32:19; 잠5:21; 15:3).
their iniquity—the cause of God's judgments on them.

 

【렘16:18 JFB】18. first … double—Horsley translates, "I will recompense … once and again"; literally, "the first time repeated": alluding to the two captivities—the Babylonian and the Roman. Maurer, "I will recompense their former iniquities (those long ago committed by their fathers) and their (own) repeated sins" (렘16:11, 12). English Version gives a good sense, "First (before 'I bring them again into their land'), I will doubly (that is, fully and amply,렘17:18; 사40:2) recompense."
carcasses—not sweet-smelling sacrifices acceptable to God, but "carcasses" offered to idols, an offensive odor to God: human victims (렘19:5; 겔16:20), and unclean animals (사65:4; 66:17). Maurer explains it, "the carcasses" of the idols: their images void of sense and life. Compare 렘16:19, 20. 레26:30 favors this.

 

【렘16:19 JFB】19, 20. The result of God's judgments on the Jews will be that both the Jews when restored, and the Gentiles who have witnessed those judgments, shall renounce idolatry for the worship of Jehovah. Fulfilled partly at the return from Babylon, after which the Jews entirely renounced idols, and many proselytes were gathered in from the Gentiles, but not to be realized in its fulness till the final restoration of Israel (사2:1-17).

 

【렘16:20 JFB】20. indignant protest of Jeremiah against idols.
and they (are) no gods—(렘2:11; 사37:19; 갈4:8). "They" refers to the idols. A man (a creature himself) making God is a contradiction in terms. Vulgate takes "they" thus: "Shall man make gods, though men themselves are not gods?"
