■ 예레미야 14장

1. 가뭄에 대하여 예레미야에게 임한 여호와의 말씀이라

  The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah concerning the dearth .

 

2. 유다가 슬퍼하며 성문의 무리가 곤비하여 땅에 앉아 애통하니 예루살렘의 부르짖음이 위에 오르도다

  Judah mourneth , and the gates thereof languish ; they are black unto the ground ; and the cry of Jerusalem is gone up .

 

3. 귀인들은 자기 사환들을 보내어 물을 길으라 하나 그들이 우물에 갔어도 물을 얻지 못하여 빈 그릇으로 돌아오니 부끄럽고 근심하여 그 머리를 가리우며

  And their nobles have sent their little ones to the waters : they came to the pits , and found no water ; they returned with their vessels empty ; they were ashamed and confounded , and covered their heads .

 

4. 땅에 비가 없어 지면이 갈라지니 밭가는 자가 부끄러워서 그 머리를 가리는도다

  Because the ground is chapt , for there was no rain in the earth , the plowmen were ashamed , they covered their heads .

 

5. 들의 암사슴은 새끼를 낳아도 풀이 없으므로 내어버리며

  Yea, the hind also calved in the field , and forsook it, because there was no grass .

 

6. 들나귀들은 자산 위에 서서 시랑 같이 헐떡이며 풀이 없으므로 눈이 아득하여 하는도다

  And the wild asses did stand in the high places , they snuffed up the wind like dragons ; their eyes did fail , because there was no grass .

 

7. 여호와여 우리의 죄악이 우리에게 대하여 증거할지라도 주는 주의 이름을 위하여 일하소서 우리의 타락함이 많으니이다 우리가 주께 범죄하였나이다

  O Lord , though our iniquities testify against us, do thou it for thy name’s sake: for our backslidings are many ; we have sinned against thee.

 

8. 이스라엘의 소망이시요 곤란한 때의 구원자시여 어찌하여 이 땅에서 거류하는 자 같이, 하룻밤을 유숙하는 행인 같이 하시나이까

  O the hope of Israel , the saviour thereof in time of trouble , why shouldest thou be as a stranger in the land , and as a wayfaring man that turneth aside to tarry for a night ?

 

9. 어찌하여 놀라 벙벙하는 자 같으시며 구원치 못하는 용사 같으시니이까 여호와여 주는 오히려 우리 중에 계시고 우리는 주의 이름으로 일컬음을 받는 자이오니 우리를 버리지 마옵소서

  Why shouldest thou be as a man astonied , as a mighty man that cannot save ? yet thou, O Lord , art in the midst of us, and we are called by thy name ; leave us not.

 

10. 여호와께서 이 백성에 대하여 말씀하시되 그들이 어그러진 길을 사랑하여 그 발을 금하지 아니하므로 나 여호와가 그들을 받지 아니하고 이제 그들의 죄를 기억하고 그 죄를 벌하리라 하시고

  Thus saith the Lord unto this people , Thus have they loved to wander , they have not refrained their feet , therefore the Lord doth not accept them; he will now remember their iniquity , and visit their sins .

 

11. 여호와께서 또 내게 이르시되 너는 이 백성을 위하여 복을 구하지 말라

  Then said the Lord unto me, Pray not for this people for their good .

 

12. 그들이 금식할지라도 내가 그 부르짖음을 듣지 아니하겠고 번제와 소제를 드릴지라도 내가 그것을 받지 아니할 뿐 아니라 칼과 기근과 염병으로 그들을 멸하리라

  When they fast , I will not hear their cry ; and when they offer burnt offering and an oblation , I will not accept them: but I will consume them by the sword , and by the famine , and by the pestilence .

 

13. 이에 내가 가로되 슬프도소이다 주 여호와여 보시옵소서 선지자들이 그들에게 이르기를 너희가 칼을 보지 아니하겠고 기근은 너희에게 이르지 아니할 것이라 여호와께서 이곳에서 너희에게 확실한 평강을 주시리라 하나이다

  Then said I, Ah , Lord God ! behold, the prophets say unto them, Ye shall not see the sword , neither shall ye have famine ; but I will give you assured peace in this place .

 

14. 여호와께서 내게 이르시되 선지자들이 내 이름으로 거짓 예언을 하도다 나는 그들을 보내지 아니하였고 그들에게 명하거나 이르지 아니하였거늘 그들이 거짓 계시와 복술과 허탄한 것과 자기 마음의 속임으로 너희에게 예언하도다

  Then the Lord said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name : I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination , and a thing of nought , and the deceit of their heart .

 

15. 그러므로 내가 보내지 아니하였어도 내 이름으로 예언하여 이르기를 칼과 기근이 이 땅에 이르지 아니하리라 하는 선지자들에 대하여 나 여호와가 이같이 이르노라 그 선지자들은 칼과 기근에 멸망할 것이요

  Therefore thus saith the Lord concerning the prophets that prophesy in my name , and I sent them not, yet they say , Sword and famine shall not be in this land ; By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed .

 

16. 그들의 예언을 받은 백성은 기근과 칼로 인하여 예루살렘 거리에 던짐을 입을 것인즉 그들을 장사할 자가 없을 것이요 그 아내와 그 아들과 그 딸도 그렇게 되리니 이는 내가 그들의 악을 그 위에 부음이니라

  And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword ; and they shall have none to bury them , them, their wives , nor their sons , nor their daughters : for I will pour their wickedness upon them.

 

17. 너는 이 말로 그들에게 이르라 내 눈이 밤낮으로 끊치지 아니하고 눈물을 흘리리니 이는 처녀 딸 내 백성이 큰 파멸, 중한 창상을 인하여 망함이라

  Therefore thou shalt say this word unto them; Let mine eyes run down with tears night and day , and let them not cease : for the virgin daughter of my people is broken with a great breach , with a very grievous blow .

 

18. 내가 들에 나간즉 칼에 죽은 자요 내가 성에 들어간즉 기근으로 병든 자며 선지자나 제사장이나 다 땅에 두루 다니며 어찌할 바를 알지 못하는도다

  If I go forth into the field , then behold the slain with the sword ! and if I enter into the city , then behold them that are sick with famine ! yea, both the prophet and the priest go about into a land that they know not.

 

19. 주께서 유다를 온전히 버리시나이까 주의 심령이 시온을 싫어하시나이까 어찌하여 우리를 치시고 치료하지 아니하시나이까 우리가 평강을 바라도 좋은 것이 없고 치료받기를 기다려도 놀람을 보나이다

  Hast thou utterly rejected Judah ? hath thy soul lothed Zion ? why hast thou smitten us, and there is no healing for us? we looked for peace , and there is no good ; and for the time of healing , and behold trouble !

 

20. 여호와여 우리가 우리의 악과 우리 조상의 죄악을 인정하나이다 우리가 주께 범죄하였나이다

  We acknowledge , O Lord , our wickedness , and the iniquity of our fathers : for we have sinned against thee.

 

21. 주의 이름을 위하여 우리를 미워하지 마옵소서 주의 영광의 위를 욕되게 마옵소서 우리와 세우신 주의 언약을 기억하시고 폐하지 마옵소서

  Do not abhor us, for thy name’s sake, do not disgrace the throne of thy glory : remember , break not thy covenant with us.

 

22. 열방의 허무한 것 중에 능히 비를 내리게 할 자가 있나이까 하늘이 능히 소나기를 내릴 수 있으리이까 우리 하나님 여호와여 그리하는 자가 주가 아니시니이까 그러므로 우리가 주를 앙망하옵는 것은 주께서 이 모든 것을 만드셨음이니이다

  Are there any among the vanities of the Gentiles that can cause rain ? or can the heavens give showers ? art not thou he, O Lord our God ? therefore we will wait upon thee: for thou hast made all these things.

【렘14:1 JFB】렘14:1-22. Prophecies on the Occasion of a Drought Sent in Judgment on Judea.
1. Literally, "That which was the word of Jehovah to Jeremiah concerning the dearth"
drought—literally, the "withholdings," namely, of rain (신11:17; 대하7:13). This word should be used especially of the withholding of rain because rain is in those regions of all things the one chiefly needed (렘17:8, Margin).

 

【렘14:1 CWC】["IN THE SWELLING OF JORDAN"]
God told the prophet worse was to come. "The Swelling of Jordan" would be experienced later, and in the present lesson, especially towards the close, we have an illustration of it.
There are things of interest to look at in the meantime, for example an illustration of that symbolic teaching mentioned earlier.
1. In chapter 13 we have what two symbols? See verses 1-11 for the first and 12-14 for the second. The prophet acted these out before the people just as he was told. The significance of the first is apparent, the second means that the destruction of Jerusalem would be brought about by her own conduct. The evils in her would cause her to be filled with a rebellious spirit as with drunkenness. "Mutual self-seeking and distrust would produce a condition where God could not pity."
2. Look at the prophet from the point of view of intercessor (cc. 14, 15), nothing more affecting in the same line being found anywhere in the Bible. Note the occasion (14:1-6); the first supplication (vv. 7-9); the divine reply (vv. 10-12); the renewal of the prayer and the excuse for Judah that is pleaded (v. 13); God's answer (vv. 14-19); the prophet's pleading and confession (vv 19-22); his final rejection (15:1-9). See the personal lament and inquiry that follow (vv. 10-18), and God's comfort and instruction to him (vv. 19-20).
3. Chapter 16 has a peculiar interest as carrying out 고전7:32, 33. The prophet's life must be an independent and separated one. He must be a celibate, and shun all social amusements (vv. 1-9). His attitude in these matters would be symbolic and give him further opportunity to instruct and warn the people (v. 17, and the following).
4. Another symbol in chapters 18 and 19, and a lesson about the divine sovereignty. Judah was a vessel marred in the making, not through want of skill on the potter's part, but because of resisting elements in the clay. It is to be broken that a better vessel may be made.
5. It is the use the prophet makes of this earthen vessel that brings on him the suffering recorded in the next chapter. Read chapters 19 and 20 together. He is in the swelling of Jordan now (20:1-2 -- compare 눅20:2). See how he meets his enemy and God's in the next verses (vv. 3-6), remembering as he does, the divine warning not to be "dismayed at their faces" (c. 1). But when the crisis is past and he is in his own chamber, how discouraged he appears (vv. 7-10). He complains that God had coerced him into this ministry. He would turn his back upon it if he could, but God will not permit him. He is between two fires, persecution without and the Holy Ghost within, and the latter being the hotter fire of the two he is compelled to the work again.
In other words God gains the victory in him (vv. 11-13), and he is at length able to sing praises to His holy name.

렘14:1-9 The people were in tears. But it was rather the cry of their trouble, and of their sin, than of their prayer. Let us be thankful for the mercy of water, that we may not be taught to value it by feeling the want of it. See what dependence husbandmen have upon the Divine providence. They cannot plough nor sow in hope, unless God water their furrows. The case even of the wild beasts was very pitiable. The people are not forward to pray, but the prophet prays for them. Sin is humbly confessed. Our sins not only accuse us, but answer against us. Our best pleas in prayer are those fetched from the glory of God's own name. We should dread God's departure, more than the removal of our creature-comforts. He has given Israel his word to hope in. It becomes us in prayer to show ourselves more concerned for God's glory than for our own comfort. And if we now return to the Lord, he will save us to the glory of his grace.
 
렘14:10-16 The Lord calls the Jews 'this people,' not 'his people.' They had forsaken his service, therefore he would punish them according to their sins. He forbade Jeremiah to plead for them. The false prophets were the most criminal. The Lord pronounces condemnation on them; but as the people loved to have it so, they were not to escape judgments. False teachers encourage men to expect peace and salvation, without repentance, faith, conversion, and holiness of life. But those who believe a lie must not plead if for an excuse. They shall feel what they say they will not fear.
 
렘14:17-22 Jeremiah acknowledged his own sins, and those of the people, but pleaded with the Lord to remember his covenant. In their distress none of the idols of the Gentiles could help them, nor could the heavens give rain of themselves. The Lord will always have a people to plead with him at his mercy-seat. He will heal every truly repenting sinner. Should he not see fit to hear our prayers on behalf of our guilty land, he will certainly bless with salvation all who confess their sins and seek his mercy.

 

【렘14:2 JFB】2. gates—The place of public concourse in each city looks sad, as being no longer frequented (사3:26; 24:4).
black—that is, they mourn (blackness being indicative of sorrow), (렘8:21).
unto the ground—bowing towards it.
cry—of distress (삼상5:12; 사24:11).

 

【렘14:3 JFB】3. little ones—rather, "their inferiors," that is, domestics.
pits—cisterns for collecting rain water, often met with in the East where there are no springs.
covered … heads—(삼하15:30). A sign of humiliation and mourning.

 

【렘14:5 JFB】5. The brute creation is reduced to the utmost extremity for the want of food. The "hind," famed for her affection to her young, abandons them.

 

【렘14:6 JFB】6. wild asses—They repair to "the high places" most exposed to the winds, which they "snuff in" to relieve their thirst.
dragons—jackals [Henderson].
eyes—which are usually most keen in detecting grass or water from the "heights," so much so that the traveller guesses from their presence that there must be herbage and water near; but now "their eyes fail." Rather the reference is to the great boas and python serpents which raise a large portion of their body up in a vertical column ten or twelve feet high, to survey the neighborhood above the surrounding bushes, while with open jaws they drink in the air. These giant serpents originated the widely spread notions which typified the deluge and all destructive agents under the form of a dragon or monster serpent; hence, the dragon temples always near water, in Asia, Africa, and Britain; for example, at Abury, in Wiltshire; a symbol of the ark is often associated with the dragon as the preserver from the waters [Kitto, Biblical Cyclopædia].

 

【렘14:7 JFB】7. do thou it—what we beg of Thee; interpose to remove the drought. Jeremiah pleads in the name of his nation (시109:21). So "work for us," absolutely used (삼상14:6).
for thy name's sake—"for our backslidings are so many" that we cannot urge Thee for the sake of our doings, but for the glory of Thy name; lest, if Thou give us not aid, it should be said it was owing to Thy want of power (수7:9; 시79:9; 106:8; 사48:9; 겔20:44). The same appeal to God's mercy, "for His name's sake," as our only hope, since our sin precludes trust in ourselves, occurs in 시25:11.

 

【렘14:8 JFB】8. The reference is, not to the faith of Israel which had almost ceased, but to the promise and everlasting covenant of God. None but the true Israel make God their "hope." (렘17:13).
turneth aside to tarry—The traveller cares little for the land he tarries but a night in; but Thou hast promised to dwell always in the midst of Thy people (대하33:7, 8). Maurer translates, "spreadeth," namely, his tent.

 

【렘14:9 JFB】9. astonied—like a "mighty man," at other times able to help (사59:1), but now stunned by a sudden calamity so as to disappoint the hopes drawn from him.

【렘14:18 JFB】18. go about—that is, shall have to migrate into a land of exile. Horsley translates, "go trafficking about the land (see 렘5:31, Margin;고후4:2; 벧후2:3), and take no knowledge" (that is, pay no regard to the miseries before their eyes) (사1:3; 58:3). If the literal sense of the Hebrew verb be retained, I would with English Version understand the words as referring to the exile to Babylon; thus, "the prophet and the priest shall have to go to a strange land to practise their religious traffic (사56:11; 겔34:2, 3; 미3:11).
