■ 예레미야 13장

1. 여호와께서 이같이 내게 이르시되 너는 가서 베띠를 사서 네 허리에 띠고 물에 두지 말라 하시기로

  Thus saith the Lord unto me, Go and get thee a linen girdle , and put it upon thy loins , and put it not in water .

 

2. 내가 여호와의 말씀대로 띠를 사서 내 허리에 띠니라

  So I got a girdle according to the word of the Lord , and put it on my loins .

4. 너는 사서 네 허리에 띤 띠를 가지고 일어나 유브라데로 가서 거기서 그것을 바위 틈에 감추라 하시기로

  Take the girdle that thou hast got , which is upon thy loins , and arise , go to Euphrates , and hide it there in a hole of the rock .

 

5. 내가 여호와께서 내게 명하신 대로 가서 그것을 유브라데 물 가에 감추니라

  So I went , and hid it by Euphrates , as the Lord commanded me.

 

6. 여러 날 후에 여호와께서 내게 이르시되 일어나 유브라데로 가서 내가 네게 명하여 거기 감추게 한 띠를 취하라 하시기로

  And it came to pass after many days , that the Lord said unto me, Arise , go to Euphrates , and take the girdle from thence, which I commanded thee to hide there.

 

7. 내가 유브라데로 가서 그 감추었던 곳을 파고 띠를 취하니 띠가 썩어서 쓸데 없이 되었더라

  Then I went to Euphrates , and digged , and took the girdle from the place where I had hid it: and, behold, the girdle was marred , it was profitable for nothing.

 

8. 여호와의 말씀이 내게 임하니라 가라사대

  Then the word of the Lord came unto me, saying ,

 

9. 나 여호와가 말하노라 내가 유다의 교만과 예루살렘의 큰 교만을 이같이 썩게 하리라

  Thus saith the Lord , After this manner will I mar the pride of Judah , and the great pride of Jerusalem .

 

10. 이 악한 백성이 내 말 듣기를 거절하고 그 마음의 강퍅한 대로 행하며 다른 신들을 좇아 그를 섬기며 그에게 절하니 그들이 이 띠의 쓸데 없음 같이 되리라

  This evil people , which refuse to hear my words , which walk in the imagination of their heart , and walk after other gods , to serve them, and to worship them, shall even be as this girdle , which is good for nothing.

 

11. 나 여호와가 말하노라 띠가 사람의 허리에 속함 같이 내가 이스라엘 온 집과 유다 온 집으로 내게 속하게 하여 그들로 내 백성이 되게 하며 내 이름과 칭예와 영광이 되게 하려 하였으나 그들이 듣지 아니하였느니라

  For as the girdle cleaveth to the loins of a man , so have I caused to cleave unto me the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah , saith the Lord ; that they might be unto me for a people , and for a name , and for a praise , and for a glory : but they would not hear .

 

12. 그러므로 너는 이 말로 그들에게 이르기를 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와의 말씀에 모든 병이 포도주로 차리라 하셨다 하라 그리하면 그들이 네게 이르기를 모든 병이 포도주로 찰줄을 우리가 어찌 알지 못하리요 하리니

  Therefore thou shalt speak unto them this word ; Thus saith the Lord God of Israel , Every bottle shall be filled with wine : and they shall say unto thee, Do we not certainly know that every bottle shall be filled with wine ?

 

13. 너는 다시 그들에게 이르기를 여호와의 말씀에 보라 내가 이 땅의 모든 거민과 다윗의 위에 앉은 왕들과 제사장들과 선지자들과 예루살렘 모든 거민으로 잔뜩 취하게 하고

  Then shalt thou say unto them, Thus saith the Lord , Behold, I will fill all the inhabitants of this land , even the kings that sit upon David’s throne , and the priests , and the prophets , and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem , with drunkenness .

 

14. 또 그들로 피차 충돌하여 상하게 하되 부자간에도 그러하게 할 것이라 내가 그들을 불쌍히 여기지 아니하며 관용치 아니하며 아끼지 아니하고 멸하리라 하셨다 하라 여호와의 말이니라

  And I will dash them one against another , even the fathers and the sons together , saith the Lord : I will not pity , nor spare , nor have mercy , but destroy them.

 

15. 너희는 들을지어다, 귀를 기울일지어다, 교만하지 말지어다, 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하시느니라

  Hear ye, and give ear ; be not proud : for the Lord hath spoken .

 

16. 그가 흑암을 일으키시기전, 너희 발이 흑암한 산에 거치기전, 너희 바라는 빛이 사망의 그늘로 변하여 침침한 흑암이 되게 하시기 전에 너희 하나님 여호와께 영광을 돌리라

  Give glory to the Lord your God , before he cause darkness , and before your feet stumble upon the dark mountains , and, while ye look for light , he turn it into the shadow of death , and make it gross darkness .

 

17. 너희가 이를 듣지 아니하면 나의 심령이 너희 교만을 인하여 은근히 곡할 것이며 여호와의 양무리가 사로잡힘을 인하여 눈물을 흘려 통곡하리라

  But if ye will not hear it, my soul shall weep in secret places for your pride ; and mine eye shall weep sore , and run down with tears , because the Lord’s flock is carried away captive .

 

18. 너는 왕과 왕후에게 고하기를 스스로 낮추어 앉으라 관 곧 영광의 면류관이 내려졌다 하라

  Say unto the king and to the queen , Humble yourselves, sit down : for your principalities shall come down , even the crown of your glory .

 

19. 남방의 성읍들이 봉쇄되고 열 자가 없고 유다가 다 잡혀가되 온전히 잡혀가도다

  The cities of the south shall be shut up , and none shall open them: Judah shall be carried away captive all of it, it shall be wholly carried away captive .

 

20. 너는 눈을 들어 북방에서 오는 자들을 보라 네가 받았던 떼, 네 아름다운 양떼는 어디 있느뇨

  Lift up your eyes , and behold them that come from the north : where is the flock that was given thee, thy beautiful flock ?

 

21. 너의 친구 삼았던 자를 그가 네 위에 수령으로 세우실 때에 네가 무슨 말을 하겠느냐 너의 고통에 잡힘이 구로하는 여인 같지 않겠느냐

  What wilt thou say when he shall punish thee? for thou hast taught them to be captains , and as chief over thee: shall not sorrows take thee, as a woman in travail ?

 

22. 네가 심중에 이르기를 어찌하여 이런 일이 내게 임하였는고 하겠으나 네 죄악이 크므로 네 치마가 들리고 네 발뒤꿈치가 상함이니라

  And if thou say in thine heart , Wherefore come these things upon me? For the greatness of thine iniquity are thy skirts discovered , and thy heels made bare .

 

23. 구스인이 그 피부를, 표범이 그 반점을 변할 수 있느뇨 할 수 있을진대 악에 익숙한 너희도 선을 행할 수 있으리라

  Can the Ethiopian change his skin , or the leopard his spots ? then may ye also do good , that are accustomed to do evil .

 

24. 그러므로 내가 그들을 사막 바람에 불려가는 초개 같이 흩으리로다

  Therefore will I scatter them as the stubble that passeth away by the wind of the wilderness .

 

25. 여호와께서 가라사대 이는 네 응득이요 내가 헤아려 정하여 네게 준 분깃이니 네가 나를 잊어버리고 거짓을 신뢰하는 연고라

  This is thy lot , the portion of thy measures from me, saith the Lord ; because thou hast forgotten me, and trusted in falsehood .

 

26. 그러므로 내가 네 치마를 네 얼굴에까지 들춰서 네 수치를 드러내리라

  Therefore will I discover thy skirts upon thy face , that thy shame may appear .

 

27. 내가 너의 간음과 사특한 소리와 들의 작은 산 위에서 행한 네 음행의 비루하고 가증한 것을 보았노라 화 있을진저 예루살렘이여 네가 얼마나 오랜 후에야 정결하게 되겠느뇨

  I have seen thine adulteries , and thy neighings , the lewdness of thy whoredom , and thine abominations on the hills in the fields . Woe unto thee, O Jerusalem ! wilt thou not be made clean ? when shall it once be?

【렘13:1 JFB】렘13:1-27. Symbolical Prophecy (렘13:1-7).
Many of these figurative acts being either not possible, or not probable, or decorous, seem to have existed only in the mind of the prophet as part of his inward vision. [So Calvin]. The world he moved in was not the sensible, but the spiritual, world. Inward acts were, however, when it was possible and proper, materialized by outward performance, but not always, and necessarily so. The internal act made a naked statement more impressive and presented the subject when extending over long portions of space and time more concentrated. The interruption of Jeremiah's official duty by a journey of more than two hundred miles twice is not likely to have literally taken place.
1. put it upon thy loins, &c.—expressing the close intimacy wherewith Jehovah had joined Israel and Judah to Him (렘13:11).
linen—implying it was the inner garment next the skin, not the outer one.
put it not in water—signifying the moral filth of His people, like the literal filth of a garment worn constantly next the skin, without being washed (렘13:10). Grotius understands a garment not bleached, but left in its native roughness, just as Judah had no beauty, but was adopted by the sole grace of God (겔16:4-6). "Neither wast thou washed in water," &c.

 

【렘13:1 CWC】["IN THE SWELLING OF JORDAN"]
God told the prophet worse was to come. "The Swelling of Jordan" would be experienced later, and in the present lesson, especially towards the close, we have an illustration of it.
There are things of interest to look at in the meantime, for example an illustration of that symbolic teaching mentioned earlier.
1. In chapter 13 we have what two symbols? See verses 1-11 for the first and 12-14 for the second. The prophet acted these out before the people just as he was told. The significance of the first is apparent, the second means that the destruction of Jerusalem would be brought about by her own conduct. The evils in her would cause her to be filled with a rebellious spirit as with drunkenness. "Mutual self-seeking and distrust would produce a condition where God could not pity."
2. Look at the prophet from the point of view of intercessor (cc. 14, 15), nothing more affecting in the same line being found anywhere in the Bible. Note the occasion (14:1-6); the first supplication (vv. 7-9); the divine reply (vv. 10-12); the renewal of the prayer and the excuse for Judah that is pleaded (v. 13); God's answer (vv. 14-19); the prophet's pleading and confession (vv 19-22); his final rejection (15:1-9). See the personal lament and inquiry that follow (vv. 10-18), and God's comfort and instruction to him (vv. 19-20).
3. Chapter 16 has a peculiar interest as carrying out 고전7:32, 33. The prophet's life must be an independent and separated one. He must be a celibate, and shun all social amusements (vv. 1-9). His attitude in these matters would be symbolic and give him further opportunity to instruct and warn the people (v. 17, and the following).
4. Another symbol in chapters 18 and 19, and a lesson about the divine sovereignty. Judah was a vessel marred in the making, not through want of skill on the potter's part, but because of resisting elements in the clay. It is to be broken that a better vessel may be made.
5. It is the use the prophet makes of this earthen vessel that brings on him the suffering recorded in the next chapter. Read chapters 19 and 20 together. He is in the swelling of Jordan now (20:1-2 -- compare 눅20:2). See how he meets his enemy and God's in the next verses (vv. 3-6), remembering as he does, the divine warning not to be "dismayed at their faces" (c. 1). But when the crisis is past and he is in his own chamber, how discouraged he appears (vv. 7-10). He complains that God had coerced him into this ministry. He would turn his back upon it if he could, but God will not permit him. He is between two fires, persecution without and the Holy Ghost within, and the latter being the hotter fire of the two he is compelled to the work again.
In other words God gains the victory in him (vv. 11-13), and he is at length able to sing praises to His holy name.

렘13:1-11 It was usual with the prophets to teach by signs. And we have the explanation, 렘13:9-11. The people of Israel had been to God as this girdle. He caused them to cleave to him by the law he gave them, the prophets he sent among them, and the favours he showed them. They had by their idolatries and sins buried themselves in foreign earth, mingled among the nations, and were so corrupted that they were good for nothing. If we are proud of learning, power, and outward privileges, it is just with God to wither them. The minds of men should be awakened to a sense of their guilt and danger; yet nothing will be effectual without the influences of the Spirit.
 
렘13:12-17 As the bottle was fitted to hold the wine, so the sins of the people made them vessels of wrath, fitted for the judgments of God; with which they should be filled till they caused each other's destruction. The prophet exhorts them to give glory to God, by confessing their sins, humbling themselves in repentance, and returning to his service. Otherwise they would be carried into other countries in all the darkness of idolatry and wickedness. All misery, witnessed or foreseen, will affect a feeling mind, but the pious heart must mourn most over the afflictions of the Lord's flock.
 
렘13:18-27 Here is a message sent to king Jehoiakim, and his queen. Their sorrows would be great indeed. Do they ask, Wherefore come these things upon us? Let them know, it is for their obstinacy in sin. We cannot alter the natural colour of the skin; and so is it morally impossible to reclaim and reform these people. Sin is the blackness of the soul; it is the discolouring of it; we were shapen in it, so that we cannot get clear of it by any power of our own. But Almighty grace is able to change the Ethiopian's skin. Neither natural depravity, nor strong habits of sin, form an obstacle to the working of God, the new-creating Spirit. The Lord asks of Jerusalem, whether she is determined not be made clean. If any poor slave of sin feels that he could as soon change his nature as master his headstrong lusts, let him not despair; for things impossible to men are possible with God. Let us then seek help from Him who is mighty to save.

 

【렘13:4 JFB】4. Euphrates—In order to support the view that Jeremiah's act was outward, Henderson considers that the Hebrew Phrath here is Ephratha, the original name of Beth-lehem, six miles south of Jerusalem, a journey easy to be made by Jeremiah. The non-addition of the word "river," which usually precedes Phrath, when meaning Euphrates, favors this view. But I prefer English Version. The Euphrates is specified as being near Babylon, the Jews future place of exile.
hole—typical of the prisons in which the Jews were to be confined.
the rock—some well-known rock. A sterile region, such as was that to which the Jews were led away (compare 사7:19) [Grotius].

 

【렘13:6 JFB】6. after many days—Time enough was given for the girdle to become unfit for use. So, in course of time, the Jews became corrupted by the heathen idolatries around, so as to cease to be witnesses of Jehovah; they must, therefore, be cast away as a "marred" or spoiled girdle.

Do we not … know … wine—The "bottles" are those used in the East, made of skins; our word "hogshead," originally "oxhide," alludes to the same custom. As they were used to hold water, milk, and other liquids, what the prophet said (namely, that they should be all filled with wine) was not, as the Jews' taunting reply implied, a truism even literally. The figurative sense which is what Jeremiah chiefly meant, they affected not to understand. As wine intoxicates, so God's wrath and judgments shall reduce them to that state of helpless distraction that they shall rush on to their own ruin (렘25:15; 49:12; 사51:17, 21, 22; 63:6).

stumble—image from travellers stumbling into a fatal abyss when overtaken by nightfall (사5:30; 59:9, 10; 암8:9).
dark mountains—literally, "mountains of twilight" or "gloom," which cast such a gloomy shadow that the traveller stumbles against an opposing rock before he sees it (요11:10; 12:35).
shadow of death—the densest gloom; death shade (시44:19). Light and darkness are images of prosperity and adversity.

your principalities—rather, "your head ornament."

shut up—that is, deserted (사24:10); so that none shall be left to open the gates to travellers and merchants again [Henderson]. Rather, shut up so closely by Nebuchadnezzar's forces, sent on before (왕하24:10, 11), that none shall be allowed by the enemy to get out (compare 렘13:20).
wholly—literally, "fully"; completely.

sorrows—pains, throes.
